December, 2012 Outreach Program - Micah 6.8 InitiativeHe has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love

kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Purpose: To enrich the discipleship of our church membership by encouraging and empowering parishioners to reach out to the people in their lives with works of justice, mercy, kindness, and humility and to inspire the church to listen to the Lord and reach out as he leads them to!

Goals: • Empower church members with church funds for their use in direct outreach with people in

their realms of influence. • Encourage church members increase their awareness of the needs of people in their lives and to

take action. • Give parents in the church an opportunity to lead their children in outreach with people they

know. • Offer parishioners an opportunity to give!• Inform our thinking and discernment towards the mission of our church through the direction

of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the church.

Details: 1) Each household in the church will be reimbursed for up to $300 for works of justice, mercy,

kindness, and humility in the lives of people that God has brought them into relationship with.

2) Households can offer one person one gift/service or use the money for multiple smaller initiatives in multiple households whose needs the Lord leads you to meet!

3) Participating households will:• Pray together as you decide how to use the money. Hold a ‘household meeting (where

applicable) to pray and discuss who might benefit by being the recipient of an act of justice, mercy, kindness, or to help them walk humbly with the Lord in the name of Christ.

• Please do not simply donate to an organization. Use this money in the life of someone God has placed in your life. This can be a stranger that God had brought into your life also.

and pay for it, contact the business and pay for the item or service in their name, purchase online and have it shipped to them. All of these options will generate a receipt. If you purchase goods to offer a creative outreach please also keep these receipts and detail the use of the money on the form.

5) Participating households could combine their monies with other households and team up to reach out and increase the impact of what you are doing! Get creative! Households may also combine these monies to be used through an existing community group to fund an outreach initiative that meets the needs of people in their lives.

6) Please plan on offering a testimony to the church for how the Lord led you to use this money. In January we will have a time as a congregation to hear about how the Lord led us to use these monies for these works.

7) What are works of justice, mercy, kindness, and humility that we should be thinking of? Consider some of all three or focus in on one!“...what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk

humbly with your God?”

Justice - ‘do justice’ - Serve the Poor. • ‘For when the Spirit enables us to understand what Christ has done for us,’ Keller writes in his

introduction, ‘the result is a life poured out in deeds of justice and compassion for the poor’ The Christian’s response to grace offered in the cross of Jesus Christ is one of justice, both in thought and deed. (Tim Keller Generous Justice, p. xiii).

• For a Christian a life poured out in doing justice for the poor ‘is the inevitable sign of any real gospel faith’ (Tim Keller Generous Justice, p. 189).

Mercy & Kindness - ‘love mercy/kindness’ - Bless someone with something they didn’t earn - an act of mercy and kindness out of love for them. • We want this to broad as you can imagine. Know somebody who just had unexpected car

problems? What about a $300 gift card towards their repairs? Have a friend that needs to get home for christmas but can’t afford a $300 plane ticket! Be kind and buy them one! Could someone use a gift card to a local pharmacy to cover a few months on prescriptions? Is there a a co-worker you know who needs a few more dollars to buy gifts for their kids? What about gift card for this? Is there a person you know who is working so very hard and struggling to have space and time to rest? What about a trip to the SPA for them and babysitting costs covered? What about a friend who could really appreciate a house cleaning service to come in and do the whole house? Call a service and have them tell the person that an anonymous person paid for them to provide full service? What kind of kindness of mercy has the Lord put on your heart or your kids’ hearts?

Humility - ‘walking humbly with our God’ - Do something to encourage a person in their relationship with Jesus. • Do you know someone who could use some spiritual resources (a new bible, a book or

commentary on an issue their struggling with, a challenging study that would help them mature). You could even offer to read a book with a friend and use the funds to purchase the books. How could you encourage someone to walk humbly with the Lord? What could you do to help another person in their relationship with the Lord?

Here’s why...

In the bible, there is a verse in the book of Micah that says this:

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly

with your God? Micah 6:8

Because I am so thankful for how good God has been to me, I’m extending this same goodness to you. I thank God for you and I give

Him the credit for leading me to do this! His love for me has changed and saved me and I am praying that you will know today just

how much He loves you too!
