When the angels had left themthe

shepherds said to one another, Let us gonowand see this thing that has taken

    place. Luke 2:15

During my pastorate in Indiana it was

my practice to ask parishioners how they

came to be members of the congregation. Tina told me that she had

been invited to Christmas Eve service at St. John the Evangelist by her

neighbors Jane and Charlie. Tina said that she hadnt gone to church

in years, but liked the idea of being at a worship service on Christmas

Eve. And she felt comfortable going with Jane and Charlie, since she

wouldnt be walking into an unknown church alone.

Tina was swept away by the service that night. The prayers,

the decorations, the smell of the incense, the music, the dimming of the

lights as Silent Night was sung through all these things Tina felt

surrounded and embraced by beauty. Tina was a pillar of St. John the

Evangelist by the time I arrived. She served on the vestry, she was a

member of the Altar Guild, she volunteered at the parishs Food Pan-

try. She found her way to Christs church through a simple invitation,

to come and be with her neighbors as they worshipped and celebratedthe birth of Jesus.

We are a blessed people: We have the good news of Gods un-

conditional and eternal love through Jesus Christ. We have one an-

other, this beloved community of St. Francis Church. Lets not keep

this to ourselves. Lets invite others to share it with us. Christmas Eve

and Christmas Day at St. Francis are times of great beauty and pro-

    ~Pastor Sally

    A father was approached

by his small son who told him

proudly, "I know what the Bible

    means!"

His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean,

you 'know' what the Bible means? The son replied, "I

do know!" "Okay," said his father. "What doesthe Bible mean?"

"That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied

excitedly," It stands for 'Basic Information Before

    Leaving Earth.'

Quotes and sayings about giving(authors unknown).

At this season when we are all concerned

abut what gifts to give, perhaps we should remember

    these timeless quotes.

One thing we can give and still keep is our

    word.

Remember we may give without loving, but we

    cant love without giving.

Kindness is a hard thing to give awayit usually

    comes back to us.

Go, Tell It on the Mountain!

Sunday, December 30th is the fifth Sunday of

the month. That means that St. Francis is servinghot lunch at Trinity Church in the Central West End.

Sunday, December 30th, is the day before New

Years Eve and St. Francis is serving an especially

    festive lunch at Trinity.

Doesnt every festive meal need a little mu-

sic? Trinitys Deacon, Harry Leip, has suggested

that we offer a selection of Christmas songs for our

guests while they eat. There is a piano there and

Pastor Sally will bring our songbooks. This is your last opportunity of the season to

belt out those old favorites. You will have practiced

many of those songs the same morning in church.

Please plan to come to Trinity from 1:30

3:00 on that day to sing and to serve. Invite friends

and family members to come with you. Carpooling

and caravans from the Lodge are an easy way to

share rides and not get lost.

Christmas Yummies!Frosted stars and frosted poodles

    Lemon bars and snickerdoodles

    Fudgy brownies, nutty fudge

Eat them all, no one will judge!

You need a plateful for your host,

Carry it or send by post.

You need a plateful for your table,

Save for guestsif you are able!

    Chocolate chip and plain oatmeal,

Buckeyes, rum balls, such a deal!

    Gourmet treats of every kind,

Eat with mocha, tea or wine.

Pick them up at Coffee Hour,

Plate on plate, treats in a tower.

Payment. Five buck, ten bucks, twenty?

Or just $1 will be plenty.

All the money in the cookie jar

Will help to spread the cheer soooo far

The money goes (now cant you guess?)

    To Pastor Sallys VDF

Translation for those who like sentences:

Crafternooners have made delicious holiday treats

and plated them up with cellophane and bows. They

will be available on Sunday, December 9th and Sun-

day, December 16th during coffee hour. No price is

set. Please give what you would like to the cookie

jar. All funds received will go to the Vicars Discre-tionary Fund to be used by those in extreme need.

    January Fun Save the Date!

Rosie Benecke and Sue Schmidt have been

hard at work planning a January day trip that will be

fun for all. January is the time when the beautiful

eagles fly down here to feed for a few weeks when

the northern rivers are frozen over.

If fun and freezing cold dont go together

for you, dont worry. We will be watching the ea-

gles soar from an indoor gallery right on the river at

Clarksville. Rosie and Sue have planned lunch at a

very special restaurant for us first at the nearby Vil-

lage of the Blue Rose. We can carpool and caravan

from Eureka. More details will be available in the

January Chalice. Meanwhile, get out your calendar

(print or electronic) and pencil in a great day for

    yourself and your family:

The St. Francis Book Group is open to eve-

ryone and is held at the Parish house the second

Thursday, every other month from 6:30-8:00 pm.

    The next book on our

reading list will be The Wa-

    ter is Wideby Pat Conroy.

    This autobiographical novel

tells the story of a young and

    idealistic teacher in 1970 and

    his experiences on Yamacraw

    Island.

The island is nearlydeserted, haunting, beautiful.

Across a slip of ocean lies

    South Carolina. But for the

handful of families on Yamacraw island, Amer-

ica is a world away. For years the people here

lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters

are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their

very existenceunless, somehow, they can learn

a new life. But they will learn nothing without

someone to teach them, and their school has no

teacher. Here is Pat Conroys extraordinary

drama based on his own experiencethe true

story of a man who gave a year of his life to an

island and the new life its people gave

    him. (Book Description, www.Amazon.com)

This book has a lot to offer with themes of

    environmentalism, prejudice, religion, education,

family, isolation and maturation and will make for a

    great read and lively discussion.

The St. Francis Book Group will meet on

January 10th to discuss this book. If you have any

questions, need more information about the book, the

    RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Twice-Baked CauliflowerMakes 6-8 servings; recipe adapted slightly from The

    Low Carb Gourmet.

    Ingredients: 1 large head cauliflower

4 oz. low fat cream cheese (do not use fat free)

1/2 cup low fat sour cream (do not use fat free)

    1/4 cup minced green onions

1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese (If you

only have finely grated Parmesan, use a bit less)

6 slices bacon, cooked until very crisp, fat blotted

with paper towel and then crumbled 1 cup reduced fat sharp cheddar cheese

(I used Kraft 2% milk sharp cheddar)

    Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350F/180C. Cut out stem and core

from cauliflower, and cut into small pieces. Cook in

large pot of boiling salted water until cauliflower is

tender, but not overly soft. Drain well and mash with

potato masher, leaving some chunks. Mix in light

cream cheese, light sour cream, green onion, Parme-san, and 3/4 of the crumbled bacon.

Spread evenly in a medium-sized glass casserole

dish. Sprinkle with low-fat cheddar cheese and re-

served bacon. Bake 30-35 minutes, or until hot and

    bubbly.

    Consider this:

In the bleak midwinter, frosty winds made moan

Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone.

Snow had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow.

In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

    Christina G. Rossetti, 1830-1894

The opening verse of this sweet

Christmas hymn always makes me feel

cold and rather sad, too: perhaps be-

cause bleak provokes for me all thecold, dark, sadness of winter.

    It has always seemed reason-

able to me that the season of Advent,

the season of waiting for the Son of God,

marks the beginning of a season where we await also

Gods sun. Its often chilly, gray and lonesome as

we wait. We yearn for the light of understanding

that is the Light of Christ. We yearn as well for

longer days of sunlight. It can be sad, it is often coldand gray. But its never hopeless. We know that we

will see the Light of Christ. We know that the sun

    will shine again.

It helps me to remember that gray is a color

on our spectrum and without it we might miss some

of what is quiet and gentle. Cold is part of the natural

seasonal changes where we live. Leafless isnt the

exciting, brightly colored way we usually see the

trees, but as we wait for them to flower and leaf-out

again, we can admire their sculpted lines, brown

against the gray skies or even better, black against a

    pink sunrise.

Others in Gods creation take care of them-

selves as they need to in the winter. Many plants die

back after going to seed, but holly and winterberry

trees grow beautiful red berries to feed the birds and

to feed our beauty-hungered souls. Some birds fly to

warmer climates to feed and overwinter. Ours is the

warmer climate for eagles who fly here from frozen

Iowa to feed in the river. Many animals hibernate or

otherwise make themselves dormant to conserve en-

ergy in a period when food is not so easy to find.

We might take a lesson from other createdbeings, taking care of ourselves as we need to

through the winter: visiting friends, bundling up for a

walk, sleeping in a little more, praying a little more,

keeping a nature journal to help us really see this

very special time of year. And wed do well to help

out our fellow creatures in this cold, hard season as

well: remembering the food pantry, feeding birds,

donating coats that are no longer worn.

Waiting for the Son seems a long, slow, re-flective period, but we know Hes coming. Waiting

for the sun seems even slower, longer, colder, grayer.

But this gift of Gods will comes to us, too, in its

    own season.

    Strategic Planning Goals

During the spring we engaged in 6 weeks of

congregational strategic planning during Adult Fo-

rums. All of the data generated during those meet-

ings was condensed into strategic planning goals by

the Bishops Committee. At their November meet-

ing the Bishops Committee finalized and adopted

the following strategic goals for St. Francis.

Growing in Service Grow an existing ministry or add a new min-

istry focused directly on the needs of the

    community in/surrounding Eureka

    Growing in Faith

Increase average Sunday attendance by 15%

    per year

Make 500 door-to-door calls each year as part

    of our invitational ministry

Increase the use of the Community Room by

    outside groups

    Become a self-sustaining congregation by

    2019

    Growing in Christ

By 2016, achieve an average Sunday atten-

dance which will require adding an additional

    weekend worship service

Add one opportunity per year for deepeningour connection with God (examples: Lenten

program, an evening Bible study, a spiritual

    retreat).

    Consecration Sunday Results

    On November 11 we celebrated

Consecration Sunday with a guest preacher, a

brunch, and the ingathering of Estimate of Giving

cards. It was a joyful gathering and delicious meal,

as evidenced by the photos in this issue.

It was also a successful campaign from a fi-

nancial stewardship perspective. We have $93,000

dollars pledged for 2013. A total of 36 pledging

units (households) turned in Estimate of Giving

cards. We have 6 new pledges for 2013. All of this

represents a 3% increase over pledged giving in

2012. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

    Diocesan Convention 2012

On November 16-17, Sue Schmidt, Kevin

Selle, and Pastor Sally attended and voted on behalf

of St. Francis Church at the Diocesan Convention in

Columbia, MO. All 47 Episcopal churches in the

Diocese of Missouri (the eastern half of the state) are

represented at this annual convention. Each church

sends delegates; ours were Sue and Kevin this year.

On Friday evening two women were ordained

to the diaconate by Bishop Smith. Michael Booker

sang the litany at that service of worship. On Satur-

day, Michael Booker (who attended convention as an

observer) was appointed by Bishop Smith to serve on

    the Commission on Ministry.

What were the other highlights of conven-

tion? The Rev. Jon Stratton showed a video of and

spoke about his work in Old North St. Louis at the

newly formed Deaconess Anne House. The guest

speaker was the Bishop of West Missouri, the Rt.

Rev. Martin Field. We viewed the video about St.

Johns Arsenal which was made by the national

Episcopal Church, honoring this congregation as one

that has come back from the brink of extinction to

become a growing, thriving parish. And we adopted

a balanced budget for the Diocese for 2013 that in-

cludes $15,000 for the mission and ministry of St.

Francis Eureka. If youre interested in learning

more about what happened at convention, just ask

Sue Schmidt, Kevin Selle, Michael Booker, or Pastor

    Sally.

Booker has been named to the Diocesan Commis-

sion on Ministry. Nominating Committee will meet on Novem-

ber 19th to propose a slate of candidates for four

open positions on the Bishops Committee at De-

cembers Bishops Committee meeting. If ap-

proved, these nominations will be offered to the

    congregation at the Annual Meeting.

    Discussions were held regarding modifications

to the annual Pet Blessing event.

    Strategic Planning

The committee studied and approved wholeheart-

edly the goals proposed to fill out the Strategic

Plan begun by the congregation earlier this year.

The goals have remained the same since the last

draft, but the organizing principle was changed to

directly fit with our mission statement. The goals

approved are listed in this issue in the article

    Strategic Planning Goals.

The committee held discussion to clarify

and affirm our support of these goals. We have

agreed that these goals are what we want to strive

to do for the next few years in order to support our

united desire for growth in our parish. Although

both the congregation and the Bishops Committee

have expressed mixed emotions about the effects,

positive and more challenging, of growth, we are

united in our desire to share with others the life we

share in Christ. We believe that these goals will

    move us toward that end.

Suzanne Jones will give a short workshop

at next Bishops Committee retreat on working

    with conflict.

    Consecration Sunday

Consecration Sunday provided the St. Francis family another opportu-

nity for fellowship and enjoyment of good food, as well as sharing the bounty of

    Gods grace through stewardship.

    Shopping with St. Nick

    On Saturday, November 24, St.

Francis members participated in the an-

nual Eureka Christmas tree lighting and

caroling. Children in the congregationand community had the opportunity to

visit with St. Nicholas (aka Ed Kindley!)

    and do a little shopping.

All year the Crafternoon group has

been working on a wonderful quilt to be

raffled. The drawing was held at the St.

Nick event and the winner is: The Selle

    Family.

    Diocesan Convention

On November 16 and 17, the Diocesan

Convention was held in Columbia, with Pas-

tor Sally, and Delegates Kevin Selle and Sue

Schmidt representing St. Francis. A sum-

mary of convention activities by Pastor Sally

    Prayer for St. Francis

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living

God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Je-

sus Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our

words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe

harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.
