sion of the Episcopal Diocese of

Pastors CornerWe all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities,

like the wind, take us awayYet, O Lord,

you are our Father; we are the clay, and

your are our potter; we are all the work

    of your hand.Isaiah 64:6b, 8 - Reading

    for 1stSunday in Advent (Nov 30, 2014)

Ferguson continues to be very much on our minds and

hearts. Anxiety mounts as the Grand Jury decision is expected by

mid-November. Clergy are being sent notices from various groups

about how and when to prepare. Newcasters and political pundits

warn that rioting is inevitable. What are we to do?

We are to remember that we are Gods all of us, every

human being. God our potter molds us. As Isaiah says, we are all

the work of Gods hand. We are all precious and equally beloved

in Gods sight. There is no us and them, theres only we,

    the people of God.

Perhaps violence will erupt. What can we do? We can re-

fuse to rush to judging and condemning. We can pray for all those

affected by the events in Ferguson. We can pray for a system of

justice that is truly blind to race, gender, and nationality. We can

pray for ears to listen and a heart to understand. We can pray for

    peace.

Whenever the Grand Jury decision is made, St. Francis will

be open for prayer. Depending upon the day of the week, we may

gather either at the parish house (210 S. Central Ave.) or at the

Lodge (616 Stockell Dr). An e-mail will be sent, alerting everyone

    of the plan.

Fear is a natural human emotion. But ultimately, our faith

quashes it. Because we believe in the power of love, as shown in

Jesus Christ, to transform hopelessness into new possibilities. We

will pray in longing and in love.

We will meet at the parish house on November 13 at 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Peace Like a Riverby Leif Enger

Enger tells the story of eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who

has reason to believe in miracles. Along with his sister and father,

Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw

older brother who has been controversially charged with murder.

Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strang-

ers, and its remarkable conclusion show how family, love, and faith

can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of

    fates. (excerpt from www.amazon.com)

    Media Exchange Discontinued

In the past we have housed books, magazines, and DVDs at the Lodge for

people to peruse and borrow. We do not have the space for this. Please do not drop

off media on Sundays. If you know a fellow parishioner would love to read that

book, give it to her or him. But please, do not leave it at the Lodge.

    Nominating Committee Formed

The outgoing Bishops Committee members comprise the nominating com-

mittee for the slate of people who will be voted on to the Bishops Committee at St.

Francis annual meeting on Sunday, January 18, 2015. Our nominating committee

    is:Judy Cody

    Bob Champlin

    Jack Lauless

If you are interested in serving as a member of the Bishops Committee or as a

Diocesan delegate, talk to Pastor Sally. And if youre asked to serve, please say yes.

Its a great way to see the breadth and depth of Gods work at St. Francis and to

    form deeper relationships with members.

Welcome to Our Deacon - Rebecca Barger

Many of you met Rebecca Barger, who visited St. Francis for 10:15 a.m.

worship on Sunday, Oct 26. Rebecca is being ordained to the diaconate at Diocesan

Convention on Nov 21. Bishop Smith is assigning Rebecca to St. Francis, to bewith our community as our Deacon. We dont yet know when Rebecca will begin

here. Please welcome her when she arrives. And watch for an article about Rebecca

    in next months Chalice.

    Tweeting the Diocese

Beth Felice, the Director of Communications for the Diocese of Missouri, has

asked Pastor Sally to be the voice of @OurEpiscopalMO from Mon., Nov 24

through Sun., Nov 30. What does that mean? It means Sally will be on Twitter,

tweeting the Diocese a handful of times each day.

Beth has asked that the tweets be an intersection of your faith and your day-

to-day life. Since Pastor Sally is not Twitter-savvy, this should prove interesting. Its a safe bet that prayer is going to figure prominently as Sally ventures into the

    world of Twitter.

    Eureka Food

    Pantry Needs

Because of your generosity, thered wagon for the local FoodPantry continues to be full-to-overflowing. Many of ourneighbors continue to need assis-tance getting through each monthwith enough food for their fami-lies. Items that are filling andnourishing along with fresh foodsthat our abundant St. Francis gar-

den could provide in the summerare primary needs.

However, with the holiday sea-son upon us and our thoughts turnto traditional foods, special good-ies, "comfort foods" in the coldmonths......lets also consider

some of the following: cannedpumpkin for

pies, cookiemixes, choco-lates, packagedcookies, cakemixes, colorfulholiday candies, etc. And to go with these...... hotchocolate packages, coffee, teas. These may be items just not pos-

sible to enjoy while on a tightbudget.

As always, all non-perishablefoods are welcomed and distrib-uted - from one small can to large

packages. Paper items (tissues,TP, etc.) and toiletries (soaps, shampoos, sanitary supplies) areso helpful as food stamps do not

apply to these. Thank you foryour continued kindness and car-

    ing to our community.

Pastoral Care CommitteeWeve overheard the most wonderful complaints recently! During coffee hour at

St. Francis, we have complained that the sign-up sheet to help a beloved parish-ioner has been filled up before we can get to it. What a great problem to have!! Its

reflective of the generosity, kindness and loving care we show to one another.

When a member of St. Francis becomes ill or injured, Pastor Sally

is the first point of contact for St. Francis. She visits and addsthem to our prayers during the Prayers of the People, and during

our weekly prayer group, as well as in individual daily prayers. Then Sally contacts Paddy Wrob, chair of the Pastoral Care Com-mittee. They help to coordinate meals, transportation, errand-running, doctor visits, etc. Paddy can share information about how

often a person might have visitors, whether the patient has ac-cess to e-mail and cell-phone, etc. Working through Paddy helpsus to give the patient all the help needed without having all of uscall with the same question, but still giving our friend the help

    he/she needs.

You can participate whenever you see a sign-up sheet that thePastoral Care Committee puts out. If youd like to help this committee organize the

help needed, see Paddy Wrob. OH! And you can always pray.Kathleen McDonald

    Taiz Prayer

From October 2014 through June 2015, Taiz Prayer at the Cathedral will beoffered on the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Cathedrals Bofinger

Chapel. For information, contact the Cathedral at 314-231-3454 or Br. Franklin Kline OP,

    314-374-3290 or email: [email protected].

Veterans Day PrayerGod of all nations, you are our strength and shield. We give you thanks today for

the devotion and courage of all those who have offered military service for this

country. We ask today that you would lift up by your Spirit those who are now atwar; encourage and heal those in hospitals or mending their wounds at home; guard

those in any need or trouble; hold safely in your hands all military families and bring

the returning troops to joyful reunion and tranquil life at home. Give to us, your

people, grateful hearts and a united will to honor these men and women and hold

them always in our love and our prayers until your world is perfected in peace and

all wars cease. Through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Wi-Fi Coming to Tutor@ The Lodge

Good News! Good News! St. Francis grant proposal to the diocesan projectNew

Ventures in Community Ministrieshas been approved! The grant will be awarded at

the Diocesan Convention later this month, but we got a sneak preview from grantauthor Jackie Selle and from Pastor Sally in late October. Theres a lot of parish and

community energy around this ministry. {Ed. Note: We rock!} The awarding of this

grant is a wonderful affirmation from the diocese that our tutoring ministry is an im-

    portant community service.

Equally important to the tutors and students serv-

ing in the program is that the grant will provide for Wi

-Fi to be installed at the Lodge. Access to the Internet

opens wonderful pathways to learning and teaching.Currently, any online assistance with schoolwork

comes through the tutors personal hotspot (if any)

and thats expensive for the volunteer tutor. Other

electronic supports have been built into the grant as

well as some essential supplies. Wi-Fi access will allow us to pursue a dream of of-

fering ACT prep support for our students. A school-sponsored ACT prep class costs

a family hundreds of dollars; private classes cost even more. With online capability,

a strong group of tutors, and collaboration with high school counselors, we should

be able to offer a similar service free to students in our area. One St. Francis parent

can hardly wait: Sign my kid up!

    Consider This

This season, St. Francis gardeners, working in the Wildwood West Com-

munity Garden with other Y gardeners, produced hundreds of pounds of

fresh produce for the use of the clients of the Eureka Food Pantry and the

Circle of Concern Pantry in Valley Park. Weekly offerings of beets, to-

matoes, cabbage, chard, kale, okra, beans, more tomatoes, radishes, spinach, lettuce

(two crops!) turnips, zucchini, summer squash, parsnips, potatoes, and more toma-

toes were a gift from God to the hungry people of Eureka and Valley Park, and we

got to help produce and share it. What a wonderful shared mission with our local

YMCA! We both are concerned with helping to feed the hungry in our community.

We both want to feed them some of the fresh fruits and vegetables we feed ourselves

in season. We both are grateful for this years sun and rain, which came in near-

perfect amounts for our well-planned crops.

Ive long had dreams of shared ministries between Eureka and St. Francis. In my

dreams they were this beautiful, this God-centered, this healthy, productive and giv-

ing. But you know what? In my dreams they were a lot more fun. What Ive learned

from the reality of shared ministry, Ive learned from the realities of ministry at St.

Francis. I know that when we exercise the fruit of the Spirit* in our work, we are

effective in our labors AND we are joyful in our work, even if it means rainy days,

compost (literal or figurative) and menial work. Next season, I hope to employ the

fruit of the Spirit along with fresh dirt, organic plants and pest remedies that are safe

and non-toxic. That way, I believe, well be growing better food for the hungry and

a smoother path to the Kingdom of God.

*Galatians 5:22 love joy peace patience kindness generosity

    faithfulness gentleness and self-control.

    St. Francis Episcopal Church

    Bishops Committee Minutes

    Oct. 19, 2014

Members Present: Sally Weaver, vicar; Joe OReilly; Suzanne Jones, treas-urer; Bob Champlin; Jack Lauless; Dan Card; Jim Eckhart; Jackie Selle, clerk.

    Opening Business:

    Opening prayer,

    Joys and concerns; temperature check

Joe OReilly moved and Jim Eckhart seconded that we accept the minutes of

the September 2014 meeting. The motion passed.

    Treasurers Report:

Plate income is somewhat down but not a real concern. With Aundreas raise we

owed her some pay. Bob Champlin moved that we accept the August and Sep-

tember financials pending audit approval. Jack Lauless seconded. The motion

    passed.

    Vicars Report:

Jim Bowlin and Sally Weaver met with the leadership of the lodge to discuss

capital improvements such as new carpet. The Masons were receptive to mak-ing some improvements, although they are planning to replace the roof and

not for carpet at this time. However, they are amenable to negotiating shared

costs of new flooring. Jim also mentioned that they have agreed to a right of

first refusal so that if the organization ever decided to sell that we would be

given the opportunity to purchase the property at the same terms.

Annette Carr will present a report about Test Drive Sunday at the next meeting.

Our request for a diocesan grant to fund our tutoring program was approved for

$9000. The formal presentation will be made at the convention in November.Senior Wardens Report:

The wardens had nothing to report.

    Stewardship:

The Rev. Dr. Peter Van Horn shared ideas and approaches about stewardship.

We worked through a process of personal self-reflection about our approaches to

stewardship and beginning to plan for how to move forward with our giving. He

suggested an approach centering around a shared meal with a short speaker and con-cluding with table hosts sharing what we do and why we do it and then inviting

everyone at the table to join in.

Next meeting: Our next meeting is November 16. Bob Champlin will providelunch and Sue Schmidt will bring dessert.

    Jackie Selle, Clerk

    Treasurers Commentary September 2014

Our actual plate income is far below budgeted, but our YTD balance is still abovewhere we planned. Our September and annual expense for Staff and Benefits is sig-

nificantly below where we projected due to an accounting mistake that was made fornursery salaries. However, this issue has been corrected during early October and

will be reflected on the October financials at the next BC meeting.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Suzanne
