Annual Meeting An Annual Meeting is held each year at the end of Janu- ary at which new Bishop’s Committee and Convention Delegates are elected. St. Francis’ Episcopal Church is a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Mis- souri. The Chalice is the newslet- ter of St. Francis’ Episcopal Church, Eureka, and is pub- lished at least 10 times per year. Submissions for The Chal- ice are due approximately the 20th of each month and may be e-mailed to the Of- fice . The Chalice St. Francis Episcopal Church Eureka MO December2010 In his book The First Christmas, au- thor Marcus Borg recalls singing ―Joy to the World‖ as a child of 6 or 7. He sang, ―Joy t o the world, the Lord has come.‖ His mother corrected him, letting him know that the words are not ―the Lord has come‖ but ―the Lord is come.‖ Borg’s mother knew the importance of that semantic difference. We worship a God  born not only in a long ago, far away time and place. We worship a God born every year in our hearts and lives at Christmas. Advent is the season of longing, yearning, and waiting in hope- ful expectation. Just as the ancient I sraelites longed for t heir savior, we long for ours each Advent. Just as the ancient I sraelites did, we live in  perilous times. Just like those people of old, we feel helpless, as power- ful economic and political forces affect our livelihoods and our way of life. This Advent many of us are grappling with fear; our future feels so fragile and uncertain. Each Christmas we bring that past event in Bethlehem into our  present moment. We long for a savior and he is born. We yearn f or the assurance that God is w ith us, and God is incar nate. Our times may still  be perilous. The forces of the w orld may still swirl around us and wound us. But our future is no longer uncertain. Our timid hope is  boldly realized through the bir th of Jesus. God fills our faint hearts with the power of his t ransforming love. We are anchored in the mirac le of Christmas: God is flesh and dwells among us. Christ is  born today.
