The following pages are full of ministry and mission opportunities that will carry you through the Christmas season and into 2014. But before we leave the fall of 2013 behind, it would be helpful and encouraging to remember some of the amazing ways God has moved at Taylors over the last few months. While there are many, I'll pick highlights from two major areas: growing and going.

First, this fall saw men and women connecting through relationships based on the study of the Word of God. Our deacons and other men gathered in groups around a book by Gene Getz called Measure of a Man, a biblical look at the godly attributes of men. Our women, meanwhile, walked through Ezer, a study about biblical womanhood. It was a thrill to hear regularly how men and women were changing and growing through their time spent with one another and with the Word of God. Second, our Mission emphasis Sunday in November ("One Day") brought worship and mission together in a powerful way. The day painted a picture of the people and places, both near and far, of God asking Taylors to REACH. We also witnessed the people of Taylors commit to REACH them, some during short-term trips, others with their lives.

This pattern of looking behind in order to move us ahead is more than just an end of the year exercise to move us toward greater spiritual growth and mission in 2014. This pattern will be the course we'll take in the months ahead as we celebrate a significant birthday in the life of Taylors: 150 years next fall! We'll hear voices from the past that will carry us through the year, remembering the ways God has moved through Taylors to accomplish His work. And we'll also hear voices that will challenge us, reminding us that God's work continues, reaching people and the generations to come.

As we look back at the fall of 2013 in order to prepare for the new year, get ready for an exciting and unique year of doing the same with the history and future of Taylors in its 150th year. If the fall is any indication, we pray God is already stirring among us, and at the start of 2014 we will urge Him to move us to greater levels of gathering, growing and going, all for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom.

May your Christmas season be full of His grace and your new year full of His hope.

ADVENTNew Sermon Series Beginning December 1Come celebrate the season of ADVENT at Taylors. The ADVENT message series begins Sunday, December 1, and culminates December 24 with our Christmas Eve services at 3 and 5 pm.

ADVENT is a season of waiting, expecting, and hoping. The word “advent” comes from the Latin word adventus which means “arrival” or “coming.” Beginning four Sundays prior to Christmas and ending on Christmas Eve, ADVENT helps us prepare for the coming, or “advent” of the Christ child at Christmas.

For hundreds of years, Christians have used an ADVENT wreath to inspire their hopes for the coming of Christ. By lighting candles and reading Bible verses, we are reminded about the meaning of Christ’s birth and become more excited about His coming in the past, in the future, and in our own lives.

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering Since 1888 Southern Baptists have been collecting funds for Lottie Moon Christmas Offering so that the entire world might know Christ. Every cent given goes to support missionaries as they serve overseas. The theme for the 2013 Season of Prayer is Totally His Heart, Hands, Voice. The national goal is $175 million. More than half of the world’s seven billion people live among people groups that are considered unreached. By giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, you can participate in being Totally His Heart, Hands, Voice, around the world.

Join us beginning January 8 as we help children go M.A.D. for missions. Over these eight weeks children will learn how they can serve children their own age and people in our community through hands-on projects. They will watch as their own peers, such as the Bodolosky children or Jeremiah Kerns, “Make a Difference” in other's lives, and learn more about how they can share the name of Jesus with those around them. The New Year is a great time to commit to assisting your child in becoming a more equipped Christ-follower.

Designed to help children increase their knowledge of the Bible, participating in Taylors Bible Drill will also develop skills to effectively use the Bible, learn how to apply the Bible to their lives, and foster poise and self-confidence. Third graders and first time Bible drillers, you are welcome to attend Books of the Bible Practice each Wednesday, 5:45-6:15 pm, starting January 15. Next year you will be eligible for competitions.

Taylors Ministry HousesTaylors provides three ministry houses for use by full-time IMB Missionaries who have served at least two years in overseas ministry and need housing for their families’ stateside assignment. Missionaries can stay up to twelve months, though most are here four to six months. Currently we have reservatiosn into 2015 and 2016. This time is important for renewal - helping family members, bringing children for college, etc. They continue to have responsibilities for their overseas assignments.

The Ministry House Committee consists of eight members, led by Dot Williams, with Jeremy Thompson as staff liaison. Our maintenance staff helps significantly with painting, renovations, etc. Many Taylors FBC members give important furnishings, which minimizes cost to Taylors.

The Missionaries are very thankful and appreciative of having such nice facilities, and enjoy the relationship with Life Groups, staff and “worship in a very friendly church.” They are amazed that Taylors has three houses just to serve them. Many serve in closed countries, so we cannot publicize their service. Take time to get to know them and their children, whether it is asking them to join you in Life Group, speak at a gathering, or socialize in your home. Fortaleza, Brazilin the Northeast of Brazil, is still known as the number one area in the Americas for child prostitution, and the UN has ranked Brazil in the top five in the world. Child abuse, neglect and abandonment are rampant due to drug trafficking, and it is very difficult to get into a safe environment. Add to this the lack of government consistency in caring for the children of Brazil, and you have a hopeless situation for many children and families. No programs are in place to help restore families in order to care for kids taken from their homes. And children who have found shelter and safety are often returned to homes and unsafe situations at the request of relatives who simply want to receive government assistance.

Praise the Lord for the Davis Lar Orphanage. The Davis Lar received their first child in June of 2001. Today the Lar cares for sixty-two children and adolescents from ages three through nineteen with a capacity to house 120. The Davis Lar Orphanage provides a home for abandoned and abused children in Brazil seeking to restore physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual health. And, they know this endeavor is impossible without Christ. Therefore, through Christ-centered care and teaching and a Christian team focused on building confidence, competence, character, and compassion, children are prepared to discover their future, both temporally and eternally. Currently 95% of the young ladies and 70% of the young men have declared Christ as their King. This statistic will exponentially further God’s Kingdom as each is prepared to enter into the world, living as a witness for Christ – as college graduates, cooks, mechanics, and nurses. We can only hope for more.

May the Lord continue to bless the Davis Lar Orphanage and continue to use the Lar as a blessing to Fortaleza and the many families of Brazil. Pray for how God may want to use you to be a part of the ministry through the Davis Lar Orphanage.

In obedience to God’s call on our lives, Take Heart Taylors was launched to reflect more fully the “partnering” capacity that He has given us in conjunction with our capacities to invite and nurture. “I’m satisfied with two kids.A boy and a girl, that’s what I’ve always wanted…” But there are 150 million orphans worldwide.

“I don’t have $20,000+ sitting around…” When God calls you to something, He will provide.

For almost two years, we have attended Mission 1:27. We have lived vicariously through families who have fostered and adopted. What a great celebration to see families walking in obedience and making a difference in a child’s life. During this time Miriam and I began to feel God calling us to adopt. After all, adoption is the perfect example of how God has worked in the lives of Christ followers.

Galatians 4:4-7 says “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’ So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has made you also an heir.”

In the spring of 2012, without finances, but with desire, we began the journey toward adoption with Bethany Christian Services. After completing the approval process, we waited… and waited… A few times we were close to being chosen by a birth mom, but disappointed when she chose someone else. In February, after nine months, we realized we could have had our own biological child. Although discouraged that we had not yet been chosen, we trusted God to be with us as we waited.

Likewise, God was providing financially. Through fundraisers and donations from fellow Taylors members, scholarships through various organizations, and our own financial sacrifice, God allowed us to have the finances to pay for the adoption in full.

In March, we received a call from Bethany that we had been picked, but still had to meet with the birth mother. Driving down to Columbia was like a blind date; she knew about us, but we didn’t know anything about her. Nervously introducing ourselves, she sat down and said, “I want you to adopt my baby!” What do you say after that? Within weeks, Miriam had gone with the birth

mother to an ultrasound appointment. We saw this time as an opportunity to not only minister to a child, but the mother as well.

Our baby, Charlotte, was due in April. While driving to a conference in Jacksonville, however, we received a call that her birth mother had gone into labor. After detouring to Columbia, Charlotte was born in the middle of the night. Because of some minor health issues, she spent three days in the NICU. We were able to minister to her birth mother during those few days and get to know her better.

Arriving home on April 19, we began our journey as a family of five. Our two older children, Talley and Elliot, have fallen in love with their baby sister and are ready to adopt again. Our families and friends have loved us so well. And our church family, who gave and prayed so generously, has embraced our baby girl. We celebrated the finalization of our adoption of Charlotte Brooks on August 14.

There are 150 million orphans, and I can’t help them all. But I can focus on the one; I can make a difference for the one!

Fall Retreat UpdateThis fall the college ministry enjoyed getting away to Camp Rockmont, North Carolina. We enjoyed the fall weather and retreating from the “busyness” of school. Besides the fellowship, flag football, and jumping in the freezing lake, all thirty-five of us focused on what it really means to be a disciple of Christ.

have some exciting news for you! In addition to the Life Group that meets on Wednesday evenings, we are starting another new Life Group just for you!

Come to learn about how you can get plugged in to one of our many groups.

Watchcare MembershipOver the years Taylors has been blessed to have many college students participate in the life of our church family; very few, however, actually move their membership to Taylors since they only live in our area for part of the year and often for a limited time. College students, therefore, are unable to serve in various capacities at Taylors since membership is required. To open the door for these young students to serve, we have decided to offer them the option to join our church as a Watchcare member.

Watchcare membership allows students to remain a member at their home church AND come under the spiritual leadership of Taylors FBC while in college. In addition to participating with us in corporate worship, discipleship, and fellowship, students who are Watchcare members will have the opportunity to use their gifts and their time also to serve the church while in school.

JFK, Graham & Irrecoverable MomentsBy Douglas W. Mize

It has been 50 years since that tragic day in Dallas when bullets from an assassin ended the life of our nation’s 35th President John F. Kennedy. His death remains one of the darkest moments in our nation’s history.

All who were old enough at the time still remember where they were when they heard the news in 1963. But as we pass the 50-year mark of this tragedy, we also recognize another famous figure of the 20th century. This month Billy Graham celebrated his 95th birthday. You already know these two men among the biggest historical figures of recent times, but what you may not know is their close association and a certain “irrecoverable moment” they shared before Kennedy’s death.

In the early ’60s most of our country had a fondness for JFK. He still remains one of the most popular

presidents ever. He averaged a 70 percent approval rating during his time in office. These were the days of “Camelot,” and despite some pressing world issues that included the beginning of the conflict in Vietnam, the early ’60s were viewed as a grand age.

This all changed on November 22, 1963. In fact, this horrific day served as a marker of a much more depressing age in our country with more terrible assassinations to come, escalating violence in Vietnam, the crime rate doubling and the drug age around the corner.

Billy Graham had known JFK before he won the presidency in 1960. After Kennedy’s victory, Graham made it clear that he would do anything to help the new president unify the nation under his leadership. Only a few days before the inauguration, Graham was invited to play golf with the president-elect. The two men enjoyed a conversation about world events and politics, but Graham was most passionate about their discussion of Jesus Christ and His pending return to earth for those who follow Him.

Kennedy was so intrigued with their discussion that he requested to meet again with Graham concerning Christ.

They continued to stay in touch through Kennedy’s presidency and were together in February 1963 at the National Day of Prayer Breakfast. In Billy Graham’s autobiography, “Just As I Am,” he shares his memory of the morning’s events.

After the gathering, Kennedy and Graham walked out together toward the presidential motorcade on this particularly cold and snowy day. Suddenly the president stopped in his tracks, turned and invited Graham back to the White House so he could discuss something with him. But Graham was battling the flu. Fearing he’d make the president sick, he declined and asked if they could meet another time.

The president agreed it could wait for a more convenient occasion. But that moment never came. For Graham, this moment will forever stay with him. In his book he wrote, “His hesitation at the car door, and his request, haunt me still. What was on his mind? Should I have gone with him? It was an irrecoverable moment.”

Today, Billy Graham is still making his life count for the Gospel of King Jesus. Earlier this month on the occasion of his 95th birthday he released maybe his final message for the world, titled, “The Cross.”

It is the central part of his campaign called “My Hope America with Billy Graham.” This month thousands, and possibly millions, of people will see his final message on televisions, computers and handheld devices. Billy Graham knows the value of taking advantage of every single moment. It is remarkable that a man so well loved, who dedicated his entire life to spreading the Gospel, still remembers this one missed opportunity to discuss Christ.

Fifty years ago the assassination of JFK reminded our nation that evil never takes a sabbatical and time is fleeting. The apostle Paul believed in “making the most of the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16 HCSB). What a challenge this is for all of us. As followers of Christ we dare not be satisfied until we take every opportunity to share the love of Christ. So who are the family members, friends or acquaintances in each of our lives who seem open to discuss Christ? For indeed today is an irrecoverable moment for all of us.

EZER Bible Study Impact

Great things are happening for Taylors Women! We have just concluded our church-wide study of Ezer. More than four hundred women came together to learn what God's Word says about His special design for women and His calling on our lives.

Men of TaylorsThank you for faithfully attending the Measure of a Man study this fall! We have seen small groups meeting regularly, and many of you attended our Wednesday night video series.

As we finish the study, may we all have our eyes focused on Christ. May our lives reflect the twenty characteristics of a mature Christian man as the Apostle Paul instructed in Timothy and Titus. We pray you will stay connected to other men for mentoring, growth, support, accountability, and adventure.

The Holy Spirit is performing a continual restoration work within each of us. May each family be blessed with an exceptional spiritual leader.
