Pictured above are HR Manager, Tammy Smyth, and Area 9 Opera ons Manager, Rick Wright. They a ended a job fair in October at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. With over 700 job seekers walking through the door, organizers said this was the most successful hiring fair their company had ever hosted. There was also a valuable connec on made with a Regional Employment Placement Specialist.

Roseanna Nielsen and her husband, Warren,

moved to Merri in November, 2013. Roseanna comes to us from Pen cton, where she worked at a dental office. She has 2 grown up children and loves to gold pan and collect old bo les.

We are pleased that Roseanna has joined our team!

New Faces

Joe Nardi joined the Corporate Office in Merri on

October 28, 2013 in the Accoun ng Department. He was born and raised in Vancouver and graduated from BCIT with his Bachelor of Technology in the Accoun ng Degree Program. Joe previously worked as Manager of Finance for the Government of Nunavut on a two year term assignment. Joe and his wife Sandy have 3 children, aged 12, 10 and 5. Joe likes to golf and play ball hockey.

Congratula ons to Seth Edwards of the Grand Forks Bridge Crew for acquiring his Class 3 License.

On Monday November 4, 2013 Sarah Stride and Damian Girard got engaged. He proposed to her on one knee at the beach. They fish, hunt, adventure, and share many of the same interests. Their wedding date is August 1, 2015 and the venue is at the VIU's New Deep Bay Marine Center. They are both very excited. Damian looks forward to introducing her to everyone and having her as his companion at the rest of our conferences!

Amanda was the guest speaker. As the co-host of CBC TV’s Lang and O’Leary Exchange, Amanda Lang has a front-row seat to the world’s daily top stories in business, poli cs, and economics. Lang is also senior business correspondent for CBC’s The Na-onal. She was part of the team that launched BNN in

1999 and, shortly therea er, moved to CNN as a report-er and anchor. She returned to Canada in 2002 to rejoin BNN and CTV, before moving to the CBC.

Lang is author of the bestseller, The Power of Why: Sim-ple Ques ons That Lead to Success, a book that shows readers how to reignite curiosity at any age to become more innova ve and produc ve.

Tis the Season to Give

Pictured above are some of the Corporate Office staff with a dona on of $500.00 to the local Food Bank for a family in need. Money was collected from various sales at the Corporate Yard. The staff has also donated money and presents to sponsor a second Family Christmas Hamper and will be delivering the food and presents before Christmas.

Base repair/ repave on Highway 4 this past summer.

On October 23, between 8:30 am and 4 pm, a third annual roadside check was held on Highway 19 north of Parksville. About 8 RCMP officers, a drug sniffing dog, 2 CVSE officers, 2 Natural Resource officers, ICBC, Chemainus Arrowboard and Emcon representa ves Barry Dales and Oliver Watson joined together for the day to both perform roadside checks and remind drivers about driving safely. Over 500 vehicles entered our “work site” where they all received a free re tread depth inspec on, a vehicle walk around and licence check. The efforts were well received and it was a great opportunity to remind the commuters who regularly use the freeway that the weather is changing and to ensure that their vehicles were properly equipped, including good re tread. Le and Below — Two old ro en 1200mm pipes were replaced in Rough Bay on Mal-colm Island with a 15m x 2400mm x 1600mm arch pipe. The pipe was also aluminized to help minimize corrosion of the pipe as it was located in a dal area. The crews worked with our environmental monitor (River Bank Resources) and our contractor (Art's Landscaping) to execute the job. It took 2 long days to install the pipe. Ron Hart, RF1 and Damian Girard were the two Emcon employee's onsite. The road affected is one of he main connecter roads on Malcolm Island. The locals are very happy that the old pipes are gone as they may have collapsed over the next couple of winters. The new patch paved over the pipe is also the newest sec on of pavement the island has. It went from a distor on in the road to the smoothest sec on of road-way on the island.

Above — In the Northern part of the Island an extensive paving program was done this year. It consisted of 4 days of grader overlays and 8 days of grind and pave. Sev-eral employees from Cumberland came up to help (Jeff Smith, Keith Langhorn, and Dean Phillips). They maximized truck use by bringing trucks up from Cumberland as well. The grinder and trucks worked ahead of the paver and prepared the sites for the pavers. The grader overlay crew was all in house, and again the Cumberland gen-tlemen also came up to help. All and all, the north island highway has been greatly improved as well as Holberg Rd and various side roads that provide access to fishing resorts (Alder Bay Rd).

Area 9 Bridge Inspection Training

Bridge Inspec on Training was provided by the Area 9 Bridge Crew— There was a back up system training day on the Paulson Bridge in October. They were approximately 90 meters above the creek which is about 300 feet. The three fellows above, who were accompanied by both the Grand Forks Bridge Crew as well as the Birchbank Bridge Crew, were of great assistance in making the training session a success.

On November 2 and 3, 2013, the old house at our Port Hardy yard was used as a fire training session for the local Fire Department. In turn they did a controlled burn to remove the house from our yard. The s ll remaining founda on of the house will be a founda on for a new covered stage area for sign supplies and possibly brine sand.

In August, Cumberland Roads and bridge crew did a joint project with some MotI funding and quan fied plan to up-

grade and install a large concrete box culvert on Coleman road in the Courtenay area. Bridge crews and Road crews worked together on mul plate pipe replacement.

Road Weather Forecasts

The Road Weather Forecast service will start again for the season on Friday November 1. The site

specific Road Weather Forecasts will once again be provided by Northwest WeatherNet, backed

by a state of the art forecast system developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

There are two forecasts issued per day: morning forecasts will be available at 5 A.M. Pacific time,

afternoon forecasts at 3 P.M. (6 A.M. and 4 P.M. Mountain time.) Amendments will be issued as

required by changing conditions, so be sure to check the web site regularly.

The forecast service includes consultations on the site specific Road Weather Forecasts: to speak

with a forecaster, call WeatherNet’s toll free number: 1-800-937-8676 extension 0, and be sure to

let them know where you’re calling from. Please note that this service is only available concern-

ing the forecasts for the stations in MoT’s network, but is available to all Ministry and Mainte-

nance Contractor personnel.
