President’s Message —by Chris Burns

With the leaves

almost gone and

the Christmas lights

coming out, it must be

the time of year for our

Club to start hopping

with Christmas parties

and gatherings. Hopefully, you have

booked your spot for this season!

With the new year upon us, your board

is actively working to come up with new

ideas on drawing more participation from

our Membership and more utilization

of many Club services. Stay tuned

throughout the first part of the year, as we

evaluate and communicate the best ideas

for implementation. Also, congratulate

Anthony when you see him for completing

the last sessions that he needed to achieve

his Certified Chief Executive (CCE)

designation by the Club Managers

Association of America. This is a very

prestigious designation achieved by only

4% of club managers in America. He has

completed over 700 hours of continuing

education class time in addition to tactical

and strategic classes at Cornell University

and UNLV. Congratulations Anthony!

Lastly, if you want to participate in the

voluntary employee Christmas fund, don’t

forget to complete the envelope and send it

back to the Club office. From my family to

yours, I hope your holiday season is filled

with much joy, friendship and peace!

Managers Message —by Anthony Chelena

Happy holidays!

The Clubhouses are

beautifully decorated

again this year and I

encourage you to join

us for some holiday

cheer. But if you plan

to visit the Main Clubhouse for lunch

in December, I suggest that you make a

reservation and get here early. Over the

past decade many, many Christmas parties

have migrated from dinner to lunch and

the lunch service in the Main Clubhouse

draws a big crowd. With such demand for

non-Member lunch parties, we bulk up the

Main Clubhouse lunch buffet and raise the

price a few dollars. The grill is unaffected

by the holiday parties and the dinner meal

at the both the Main Clubhouse and Grill

are in regular order. Also, keep in mind that

after the New Year, the Main Clubhouse

closes in the first part of January and

reopens Tuesday, January 20.

Thank you to all the Members who

contributed to the Employee Christmas

Fund. The fund will be distributed to

employees on December 19 (in time for

them to do some shopping). The fund is

distributed to every employee (except me,

of course) using a formula that has been

in place for many decades. Call me if you

have any questions on how the fund is

distributed.

On December 5 we will be emailing a

survey to all Members regarding the

food & beverage programs at the Main

Clubhouse and the Pro Shop Grill. We’ve

done this survey several times over the

last ten years, and the information we get

is very valuable. Look for the email on

December 5 and please participate.

Look for new bridge construction on

hole #5 in early December. Craig’s staff

will complete the demolition of the old

bridge and Creative Bridge Design from

Claxton, GA won the bid for building the

replacement. Construction should take a

couple weeks. Please be careful around the

construction area.

Last month I challenged our Department

Head staff to come up with at least 1

idea each for an event at Hendersonville

Country Club that we would NEVER do. It

had to be zany and it had to be something

we would never try - before 2015. They

suggested several GREAT events we will

NEVER do. But they also came up with

some real doozies that we ARE going to

roll out in 2015. Try these on for size- a

woman’s wardrobe workshop in February-

part disco cocktail party and part fashion

show/workshop, a speed dating mixer for

single seniors in March (must be single and

on social security), a corn hole tournament

in April with a live band, and a 3 hole, 6

wine, walking wine tasting on the golf

course in May. We have other crazy ideas in

the works like mountain biking, children’s

bridge lessons and hiking groups and we

are anxious to hear your ideas too. Strap

your seatbelts on. I can’t wait to get 2015

started.

We are looking for 10 women who aren’t

now, but want to be, future tennis stars- at

least players. In 2015 we are going to invest

in YOU! We will be offering 12 weeks of

FREE tennis lessons if you commit to

play on our USTA Ladies 2.5 tennis team.

What is the commitment? Commit to

taking the free lessons, joining the team

(there is a USTA fee), and playing in most

of the scheduled matches. Who is eligible?

Current HCC Members who qualify to

play in a 2.5 league. The USTA defines

2.5 player: “You lack court experience

and your strokes need developing. You

are familiar with the basic positions for

singles and doubles play. You are learning

to judge where the ball is going, although

your court coverage is limited.” Clinics will

begin in March and matches will begin in

April. Get a friend and contact Pam at the

Tennis Shop.

While many ladies attend our bi-annual

Ladies Fashion Shows in the Fall and

Spring, you may not be aware that Patsy

Jones has been organizing and planning

these fashion shows for 14 straight years.

With an average of over 100 attendees at

each show, this represents a great deal of

entertainment for our Membership. So,

thank you Mrs. Jones for your hard work.

At the time of this writing, the Club is

midway through the fiscal year so it’s an

appropriate time to look at the 6-month

financial results. The Club has a mid-

year profit of $668,764, which is $28,170

better than at this point last year. The

favorable variance comes from higher

membership counts in the “B” and “C”

categories (unfortunately lower “A”), lower

depreciation expense, and from lower

health insurance costs (a portion of our

group health plan is self-insured). One

department of particular financial success

this year is the Pro-Shop Grill, which is

enjoying tremendous revenue growth and

good cost control. Congratulations Harry

Barnjum!

New Year’s Noisy Family Celebration

Please note that reservations are required and the regular Grill menu will not be available this

evening in order to accommodate the largest amount of Members, large tables cannot be pulled

together. This is your chance to cut loose, sing, and ring in the New Year with your family.

Golf Tips —by Jay King

During the winter

months it is still

very important to

continue to play

and practice. It’s a

great time to take lessons and work on

adjustments or changes to your game.

Time management during your practice

session is critical since it will be colder

and you may not want to spend as much

time outside.

Last week I watched some players

practice putting. It seemed like they all

were putting 3 balls from a distance of

about 30 feet. After putting the third

ball they would collect the balls and putt

towards another target 30 feet away.

While it is true that this type of practice

is good for distance control, practicing

only like this is not good for your

putting confidence and being confident

is the key to being a good putter.

It’s kind of like a basketball player who

has missed a bunch of shots early in

the game, the best way for him to get

his shot back is to get fouled so he can

try for some free throws. After making

those, he feels more confident with

his shooting and plays better for the

remainder of the game. The same is

true with putting; to be confident you

have to be able to make putts. So spend

some time on the practice green making

short distance putts. The more you see

and hear the ball go in the cup, the more

comfortable you will be.

Putting Drill: Find a straight putt and place tees in the ground every foot from 1-5 feet. Make 3 consecutive putts from each distance before you go to the next tee. When you get to the fourth tee you have made nine consecutive putts! This will help build your confidence in your putting and utilize your practice time more efficiently.

Grounds —by Craig DeJong

We are quickly

moving into winter

and the holiday

season. It is also a

time to reflect on

the past year. I am

very thankful to our

staff and the hard

work and long hours they put in this

season to make this another successful

year.

During the off-season our staff

refocuses their attention to projects.

A lot of our winter work consists of

landscape cleaning, tree trimming, and

general course cleanup. The Board of

Directors has given us the go ahead on

a few larger projects that should begin

soon. Both involve shade related issues

and the inability to grow desirable

turfgrass. The first is the removal of the

Hemlocks and scrub trees guarding the

south side of the lower putting green.

This wall of tree growth reduces turf

growth almost yearlong. The removal

of these trees will not only aid in better

turf conditions, but provide beautiful

views of the lake from the putting

green, Clubhouse, and numerous other

areas. A second area of shade related

work will involve the landing area on

#14. A number of large trees, along

the left hand side, are preventing us

from growing desirable turf. This area

will be cleaned up allowing a better

turf environment and additional shot

selection into the green.

I personally want to thank all the

Members for their support for our

department. It is great to have a

Membership who appreciates the work

we do.

Golf News—by Ben Balentine

With the

tournament season

behind us and our

winter schedule

now in effect, we

now desperately need to pay attention

to the pace of play on the golf course.

Most mornings we will have some delay

in opening due to frost, which means

that play will be concentrated when we

do open. Some days it may be necessary

to start play on both nines, which makes

it imperative that we maintain the

proper pace of play. We have a goal of

2 hours per nine holes or 4 hours per

18 holes. Please maintain an awareness

of your position on the course and how

long it is taking you to play. Remember

to stay behind the group in front of you,

not in front of the group behind you.

During the month of December, all

in-stock golf clubs will be on sale at

30% off retail prices, with the exception

of Ping, which is an additional 10% off

our normal prices. This month will

be the perfect time to purchase that

special Christmas gift at a great price.

REMEMBER PRIZE CERTIFICATES

MUST BE REDEEMED BY APRIL 30,

2015.

The 2015 Schedule of Golf Events is prepared and being reviewed by the Golf Committee at this time which will enable us to present it in the January Score.

The closing luncheon was held on

Tuesday, November 4. The first

part of the meeting covered several

business topics including the election

of a new Board of Directors. We

would like to take this opportunity

to thank Elaine Harris for her two

years serving as President and to

welcome Barbara Clay as our new

President for the next two years.

The second part of the meeting

announced all of the various

winners from throughout the season

with eagle and birdie awards and

ringer prizes. And, in keeping with

tradition, there was the award for

“Most Improved Golfer” which went

to Luann Ham.

For a listing of all of the prize

winners as well as the information

about the new Board of Directors

and Committee Chairs, please log on

to our web site www.wgahcc.com for

all of the details.

Remember, even though the days

are shorter and the temperatures

are a bit cooler, there are plenty of

opportunities for golf. Please refer to

TENNIS —by Pam Cloer

We have had a wonderful 2014 Tennis Season here at Hendersonville Country Club. Thanks to all the adults and juniors who have played and participated in events and leagues. Look in the January score for a tentative 2015 Tennis schedule of Events

The tennis courts are open year round (weather permitting). With freezing temperatures at night, please remember that being flexible with your playing times will allow you and your group a better chance of getting your “Tennis” in. If you play later in the day, it is to your advantage for winter play (especially on clay).

The online court reservation sheets and phone message will be updated as often as possible. We will try and keep everyone informed of court conditions

Congratulations to Celia Donaldson, Hamrick Perry, McCollough Perry, Gabe Williams and Ellie Jull for winning the USTA Western NC Jr League this fall. These kids played matches against other teams in the area every Sunday for 5 weeks. Keep up the good work!

The online court sheets have been updated. All names of players must now be listed on the court reservations (guests included). As a reminder, guests are only allowed the privilege of playing here at HCC 2 times per month.
