From The Principal School Review Feedback The School Improvement Unit conducted our four year review this year and I quote from the report: “The school has established high standards for a quality education and enjoys an optimistic and positive climate.” I will share more feedback in next year’s newsletter.

School Leaders and Annual Award Recipients Congratulations to our 2018 School Leaders who were inducted at our Annual Awards Presentation last Wednesday. Congratulations also to our annual award recipients who were acknowledged.

School Captains - Eva Whitehead, Toby Moore, Skye Sinclair, Mason Hamill and Jackie Grist Mitchell House Captains - Noah Selwyn-Smith, Dustin Wilson Sturt House Captains - Xaydan Kerss, Ava Morrow Senior Leaders - Imogen Crossley, Aeden Davies, Asher Kennedy, Hudson Payne and Samaya Williams Thank you to our 2017 School Leaders for leading assemblies, helping around the school, representing our school, and showing other students how to do the right thing - Stephanie Aitchison, Henry Cook, Jesse Hinds, Ethan Ingledew, Zander Browne, Tyla Peasley, Jache Campbell, Wyatt Swift, Aquinnah Evans, Majenta Massey, Noel Wiseman, Ciara Conroy, Ella Smith, Charlotte Murphy, Madison Flanagan and Hamish Jacobson.

Acknowledging our Achievements As the year draws to a close, it is important to recognise some of our many achievements, big and small:

Student artwork selected for the 2018 Healthy Active School Travel calendar

Overall winners of the school section of the Ipswich Show for our handwriting and art

Junior Boys won the inter-school soccer competition under coach Miss Tether

Jache Campbell won the Book Links Writing Competition following her extension writing work with Mr Jones and Miss Horstman

Our Art Exhibition showcased the beautiful work you have been doing with Mrs White

Collins Sensei successfully won a $25,000 DET Languages Innovation Grant, and most importantly helped students prepare delicious Japanese food for you every fortnight

Students were given sporting opportunities through the Sporting Schools Grants secured by Mrs Weber

Uniform and resource vouchers supported parents/carers thanks to Barnardos grants organised by Miss Carlotta and Mrs Weber

Our P&C Association had the most participation and activity I have seen since being here

Band and Choir were awarded Bronze in the Jacaranda Festival with the help of Miss Smithers, Ms Murphy and Mr Bignell

Our Kitchen-Garden Program under the leadership of Mrs Barry and Mrs Jacobson won the Ipswich City Council Awards for Excellence in the Student and Environment categories and overall, and received significant contributions from outside organisations

Our school was commended by Metropolitan Region for Excellence in the Early and Primary Years for our literacy work

Students will go to their new classroom and meet their new teacher tomorrow, Tuesday, 5 December.

We farewell Mr Wilson who is heading to Mount Marrow State School. Mr Wilson has taught at Ipswich West State School since 2008

and is relocating to be closer to home and for his professional experience. He will be greatly missed as a class teacher and contributor to

our school community. Mr Wilson led our debating teams in the Ipswich Schools Debating competition since we began participating two

years ago, has written and directed the Options and staff plays, and been a leader in grammar instruction in our school. Thank you, Mr

Wilson, for your contribution to the students, families and staff of Ipswich West State School for the last ten years.

TUCKSHOP NEWS Tuckshop day will be on Thursdays in 2018 and will resume on Thursday 8 February 2018 (week 3 of Term 1).

2018 BUS PASSES Student bus passes for 2018 will be forwarded to our school at the beginning of Term 1 and available for collection by the students. Any student that has held a 2017 pass will automatically roll over into the new year unless they have moved schools or have moved residential address. Students will be able to use their 2017 passes until they receive their 2018 passes. Any students who have not held a 2017 bus pass and would like to see if they are eligible for a 2018 bus pass can contact Westside Bus Company on 3288 1333 or via email to [email protected].

OFFICE OPENING HOURS (2018 SCHOOL HOLIDAYS) The admin office will be open from Monday 15 to Friday 19 January 2018. The P&C Uniform Shop will also be trading during this time (please see P&C section for detailed times). Classrooms will be open on Friday 19 January, between 2.00-3.00pm to anyone who would like to drop off school books.

FREE FURNITURE GIVEAWAY! We are having a cleanout! Furniture and school supplies will be on display in the junior playground every afternoon from Monday 4 to Friday 8 December from 2.30pm.

SECOND HAND UNIFORMS Second hand uniforms in good condition may be donated to the school for others to borrow or buy.

JAPANESE COOKING The nineteenth Japanese food offering for the Year of the Rooster will be on Wednesday 6 December. Miss Collins, our Japanese language teacher, along with the help of some year 6 students, will be making green tea ice cream. This has been a popular treat in the past and will be available at second break for $1 each. Special Offer: The first student to tell Miss Collins who the best Japanese language teacher is at Ipswich West will win a free serve!

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL (FREE DRESS DAY) A fun day is being planned for Friday 8 December, starting with a FREE P&C Disco followed by a Pizza Fundraiser! Fun activities will occur in the classrooms for the rest of the day.

P&C NEWS End of Year Concert: Thursday 7 December. P&C will be providing complimentary tea, coffee and scones for parents and carers. End of Year Raffle: Last chance to get your raffle tickets back to school. Raffle will be drawn on Thursday 7 December at the End of Year Concert. End of Year Disco: FREE! For all students that attend the last day of term!! Friday 8 December (9am-10am for Prep to Year 2 and 10am-11am for Years 3-6)—FREE DRESS DAY! Pizza Fundraiser: There will be a Pizza fundraiser lunch on the last day of term. Volunteers to help on the day are needed! Please return your orders to the office by 9.00am on Tuesday 5 December. Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser: Saturday 9 December, 7.45am to 3.30pm, at Bunnings West Ipswich (corner Brisbane & Clay Streets). Come along and buy a sausage in bread and drink on the day to help us raise funds for our wonderful school. School Banking: There is no school banking on the last day of school (Friday 8 December). School Banking Competition prizes will be drawn this week with the students. ANGIE'S BARISTA KOFFEE The coffee van will be parked on the Junior School oval from 8.00am to 9.30am on the first day of school (Monday 22 January 2018). It is a great opportunity for parents/carers to buy a drink, catch your breath and meet other parents. Don't forget to bring some change!

SCHOOL WATCH Parents and students can help take care of our school by reporting any suspicious after-hours activity to School Watch on 13 17 88. By keeping an eye out we can work together to create a safer school community and help to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in our school. If you see something suspicious, please don’t intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter.
