2014 DATES TO
REMEMBER: Term 1: 29 Jan—4 April Term 2: 22 April—27 June Term 3: 14 July-19 Sept Term 4: 7 Oct—5 Dec
Dear Parents/ Caregivers, The highlight of a busy week at school this week will be the Dance Cart performances this Friday evening in Mercy Hall. The performances begin at 6.30 pm and should run until approximately 8.00 pm. Children will need to be here by 6pm to get ready. Teachers have passed on instructions to their classes. It’s sure to be a great night’s entertainment and all children are involved. I look forward to seeing you here. Lent There has been wonderful support for our Lenten initiatives—a time for prayer, supporting Project Compassion and changing ourselves to be more like Jesus. We continue that journey this week. Check out the Wall of Hearts near the office door! Vietnamese food will be on sale again tomorrow for the final time. I pass on my sincere thanks to the wonderful parents who have worked so hard for this cause. Monster Easter Raffle Donations and sold tickets have started to roll in but we are nowhere near “monster” proportions yet. Please support this traditional P and F raffle with a flood of donations and tickets this week. Some of the prizes are on display in the office. Prizes will be drawn next Wednesday. Remember, you have to be in it to win it! Mothers’ Day Gifts Thanks to all who placed orders for Mothers’ Day gifts. No more orders are being accepted now that the due date has passed. Book Fair Here is a great way to encourage reading and to get some great holiday reading material. Book Fair is open throughout the week so take advantage of some wonderful bargains. See inside, and around the school, for further details. Prep Dates for 2015 My apology for the incorrect dates that were published last week. Enrolment applications are now being
taken for Prep in 2015, those children born between 1st July, 2009 and 30th June, 2010. Simply come to the office to collect the form. Date Claimer We are very keen to have parents in a position to make an informed decision on Catholic secondary schools. St. Mark’s is organizing an “EXPO” where many of the local Catholic Colleges and those that meet particular student needs will be here to give information and answer your questions. Mercy Hall, 7th May 6.30—8.00 pm Also, school photos are scheduled to be taken on 9th May. En-velopes will go home after the Easter holidays. Year 4 Instrumental Music Thanks for your support. All Year 4 students will take instrumental music lessons from Term 2 this year. Adjust-ments in the levy amount for Year 4 will appear from next term. We look for-ward to the wonderful benefits that will come from this programme which will run each Monday. Prep Playground It’s here .. And they love it! Check out the new playground. Student re-ports/ NAPLAN results These are important documents and are needed for high school interviews so keep them safe for your reference.

A year with Pope Francis This last week marks the first full
year since Pope Francis, our new
Pope, stepped onto the balcony to
greet the world. Since then, this
amazing man has captured the
attention, not just of Catholics, but of
the whole world. His message is the
very same one that Jesus gave us
some 2000 years ago: love God and
love each other. In Pope Francis’ recent writings, he reminds us that being a
disciple of Jesus is a life filled with JOY, in the midst of all life’s ups and
downs, we are loved by God and sharing this love with others is what it’s all
about! In his own words… “I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very
moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an
openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly
each day. No one should think that this
invitation is not meant for him or her, since
no one is excluded from the joy brought by
the Lord. The Lord does not disappoint
those who take this risk; whenever we take
a step towards Jesus, we come to realize
that he is already there, waiting for us with
open arms.” Evangelii Gaudium
During Week Three of Project
Compassion we are introduced to
Archie. Archie’s family lived on a
steep river bank in a one roomed home
beside the Plaridel River in the prov-
ince of Bulacan, the Philippines.
Whenever strong rains or typhoons hit,
the river rose and people were evacuat-
ed. Typhoons wreaked serious damage.
“Our roof had holes in it. So when it
rained, it was like we were having a
shower,” he said as he explained that
whenever strong rains hit, the houses
had to be evacuated for higher ground.
Now 19, Archie experienced severe
flooding three times, including
September 2009’s Super Typhoon
Ondoy. “After this typhoon, our house
looked like it had been torn apart by a
wild beast. Mud covered every wall
and corner, the plywood walls were
dismantled, the roof was gone and the
posts were bent.”
In August 2012, an emergency
resettlement program supported by
Caritas Australia helped Archie and his
family resettle into permanent and
secure housing away from the flood
prone river. “We are now confident
and secure in the knowledge that we
will not be devastated again by natural
disaster,” said Archie. “We are so much
happier.” Archie and his family are just
a few of the people we are helping
through our support of Project
Compassion. Every little bit helps!
Project
Compassion continues...
What Determination?
Determination is focusing your energy and efforts on a particular task and then
sticking with what you are doing until the task is done. Determination is using your
will power to do something even when it is really hard. You try and try, you work
and work, until you get it done.
You are practising Determination when you …
• Believe what you are doing is important.
• Resist being distracted
• Keep going even if it gets difficult.
Let’s practise Determination by trying hard even when things are hard!
