Pope Francis’ Message “Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Christmas! Today

the Church once again experiences the wonder of the

Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and the shepherds

of Bethlehem, as they contemplate the newborn Child

laid in a manger: Jesus, the Savior. On this day full of

light, the prophetic proclamation resounds: “For to us a child is born, To us a son is given. And the govern-

ment will be upon his shoulder; and his name will be

called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting

Father, Prince of Peace.” (Is 9:6) The power of this

Child, Son of God and Son of Mary, is not the power of

this world, based on might and wealth; it is the power

of love. It is the power which created the heavens and

the earth, which gives life to all creation: to minerals,

plants and animals; it is the force which attracts man

and woman, and makes them one flesh, one single

existence; it is the power which gives new birth, par-

dons faults, reconciles enemies, and transforms evil

into good. It is the power of God. This power of love led

Jesus Christ to strip himself of his glory and become man; it led him to give his life on the cross and to rise

from the dead. It is the power of

service, which inaugurates in our

world the Kingdom of God, a king-

dom of justice and peace. For this

reason, the birth of Jesus was

accompanied by the angels’ song

as they proclaimed: “Glory to God

in the highest, And on earth

peace among men with whom he

is pleased!” (Lk 2:14).

God Chooses the Humbles to do Great Things Luke, in the first chapter of his Gospel (26-38), told us that

the angel Gabriel was sent to Nazareth to announce to

Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph of the house of David,

that she, by the power of the Holy Spirit, would bear a son

and be named Jesus, who would be great and would be

called Son of the Most High. Angel Gabriel also informed

Mary that her barren cousin, Elizabeth, conceived a son in

her old age…. In today’s Gospel passage (Lk 1:39-45) we

learned that Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to visit and to render help to her cousin. The conver-

sations between these two holy and humble women reveal

that God had come to them and they responded with joyful

recognition of His Presence. In a few days we will celebrate

Christmas again. May we realize that throughout the history

of salvation, God has always chosen the small and humble

to do great things!

Because Mary accepted the Word and gave herself com-

pletely in joyful and humble submission, the Son of God en-

tered the world as a helpless infant, an impoverished King,

an unwelcome Savior. He was born amidst extreme poverty,

with a life of labor and persecution; to die on the Cross

eventually for the salvation of mankind. Here’s the profound Christmas mystery: Man’s Creator has become man, born of

the Virgin. We have been made in the divinity of Christ who

humbled himself to share our humanity.

Paragraph 526 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church re-

minds us that to become a child in relation to God is the

condition for entering the kingdom. For this, we must hum-

ble ourselves and become little… Only when Christ is formed

in us will the mystery of Christmas be fulfilled in us. Through

Baptism, we are called to accept the Word in our hearts and

allow the Word to become incarnate in all our events and

experiences of life. In baby Jesus’ simple stable, may we

recognize our nothingness, allow the Word to dwell in us, to

make us truly small and humble.

Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord,

your grace into our hearts,

that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son

was made known by the message of an Angel,

may by his Passion and Cross

be brought to the glory of his Resurrection.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spir-it, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDER-STANDING OF SCRIPTURE 4th Sunday of Advent Here we are, mere days from Christmas, and we hear a

Gospel anticipating the birth of another child. Mary has

received word that her cousin Elizabeth is with child.

Pregnant as she is, Mary "set out and traveled to the hill

country in haste." She has recently received the greatest news of her life - that she is to be mother to the Messiah

by the power of the Holy Spirit - but her concern is for her

cousin in need. Through God's grace, Elizabeth turns it

into an opportunity to honor the coming Christ. "Blessed

are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your

womb." Yet Mary's example of selflessness should inspire

us.

As Christmas draws near, there is plenty of goodness to

anticipate for many of us. We'll reunite with family and

friends, uphold time-honored traditions, swap stories old

and new, exchange gifts, and welcome Jesus at the

Christmas liturgy. These are wonderful things! Of course,

they probably all come with their own to-do list. Shop for

last-minute gifts, pick up recipe ingredients, ready the guest room, or pack your own bags. Mary probably had

things to do as well. She had a lot to consider, for one

thing. How do you plan to tell your parents you're preg-

nant, but no man was involved? When Joseph finds out,

who will care for the practical needs of you and your

child? Into what may have been a chaos of questions,

Mary receives news that someone is in need. She goes

immediately.

In these final days before Christmas, stay watchful and

awake! You never know when God might invite you to

welcome, hospitality, and compassion. It might be tempt-

ing to reject the opportunity for your own needs. Follow

the example of Mary! If God is providing you an oppor-

tunity to love, He will provide the means to accomplish all

your other tasks. This Christmas season, may you too hear, "Blessed are you who believed that what was spo-

ken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

Rachel’s Corner “I said her name out loud for the very first time. I

have not been to confession in 10 years and I thought I was fine. What a gift I have

been given going to confession now. I am so happy now. I am at peace and more

importantly, now I know my child is at peace. I am empty of all pain. Now I can

begin to forgive myself.” - Testimonial from retreat

Do you know what it would feel like to feel peace again? Your Rachel’s Vineyard™

team understands that yearning and invites you to join them on the next retreat. The

gift of His mercy and peace is awaiting you. Healing after Abortion Ministry

Me he vaciado del dolor. Ahora puedo empezar a perdonarme yo misma.”
