PERFECT ATTENDANCE FOR FIRST TRIMESTER Perfect Attendance recognition is awarded to students who achieved zero absences and three or fewer tardies during each trimester. When a student is signed out and misses more than thirty instructional minutes of school in the course of a school day (not including lunch or recess), it is coded as a tardy in the attendance system. Once a student accumulates four tardies, they are no longer eligible for perfect attendance recognition. Congratulations to the following students! Toys for Tots Our school is working hand in hand with the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots foundation to collect toys to be donated to less fortunate children in our community. Donated toys will be given to children ranging in age from 0 to 12 years old. New, unwrapped toys can be donated to your child's classroom. Each classroom is keeping a tally of the total toys donated. The class that is able to collect the greatest number of toys will receive a prize of extra recess. The last day to donate toys is Wednesday December 14th. For more information about Toys for Tots you can visit their website at www.toysfortots.org/.

Choir Turnstone students in 5th and 6th grade are invited to participate in this year’s Rocklin Academy Choir for the second half of the year, beginning in January. Students will learn proper vocal technique and sing a variety of quality elementary vocal music. We will have several opportunities to perform during the school year including winter and spring concerts and a possible music festival in the spring.

Our first rehearsal for the new year will resume Tuesday, January 10th! Rehearsal times are Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:15 - 4:00pm in Mrs. Klein’s 5th grade classroom. Consistent attendance is required so your student can learn their music and be an active member of the group.

If you would like to commit your student to being in the choir, please have your student ask me for a form during music class and return the form to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday, December 16th! Your child will not be able to attend the first rehearsal without a permission slip turned in. If you have any further questions, please contact me through email at [email protected].

Choir’s Winter Performance will be held on December 13th at 6:30pm in the multipurpose room.

Thank you!

By, Keri Reno We live in a world where news is instantly at your fingertips. No longer do we need to wait for the nightly news to know what is supposedly going on in our town, state, and world. You can find the latest news all over social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. But, is the information accurate? In this day where anyone can post facts, it becomes important to teach our children how to sift through the details to find the truth. A recent Common Sense Media article provides some great tips to help spot inaccurate information. They say to “look at the article for low-quality grammar, URL’s that end in lo or com.co, and checking the About You page to see who supports the site." Additionally, it is important to always consider who wrote the article, who paid for it, who might benefit from the information, and who if anyone was left out. To read the entire article visit Common Sense Media's Website.

Casting Call Western Sierra is looking to fill two roles in our spring musical "The Sound of Music". We will hold auditions on Dec. 16 beginning at 4pm at Western Sierra in room 156 (in the gym area). We are looking to fill the roles of Marta and Gretl with 4th-6th grade girls. Please email Angel Call for more information about auditioning and schedule. [email protected] Thank you, Mrs. Call Western Sierra Collegiate Academy Cheer Coach

Planned Absences / Independent Study

As the holidays approach, some families plan for their children to miss school due to travel. When an absence is planned, the teacher and the attendance line must be notified and an ISP requested at least 5 days in advance. ISP requests can be made in person in the main office, or via email: [email protected]. Absences of 3 or more days require a parent meeting with the principal to approve the long term ISP request prior to the

absence. Independent Study Packets for unexcused absences (ie: Travel) are due the first day the student returns back to school. Accumulated unexcused absences without completed ISPs will be classified as truancies. Rocklin Academy prefers that families plan their travel during the 32 days of scheduled school breaks during the school year or during the two months of scheduled summer vacation. For more details on Independent Study and attendance, please reference the 2016-17 Parent / Student Handbook.

Reporting an Absence

If your student will be absent or will be arriving late to school, please notify the school in one of the following ways by 8:30 AM:

Via the FREE App: Search “Rocklin Academy Turnstone” in App Store or Google Play Download the app > click More > Report Absence.

Via Email: [email protected] Via the Attendance Line: 916-632-6580, option 1

Thank you!

Company MatchingCompany Matching Did you know there are over 300 companies that match employee non profit donations? HP, Oracle, and Kaiser are just a few of the many local employers that offer these programs to help your pledge go further.

We have compiled a list of companies that have extended this benefit to their employees:giving.turnstonepsp.org/matching.pdf

Please join the nearly 80 Turnstone parents, family, and friends that have contributed towards the valuable programs we support like teacher supplies, enrichment programs, and technology in the classroom.

The goal of the Campaign is to raise just $100 per child in order to fully fund our program for the year.

This is our only fund-raiser of the year.

Since we are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization your contribution is tax deductible and frequently eligible for corporate matching programs.

Volunteer Hour Tracking can be submitted online at http://www.turnstonepsp.org. Please login or register on the left and after logging in you will see “Track Volunteer Hours” on the top. From there you can select a month and enter all your volunteer hours.

We continue to work on making tracking hours easier. One option is to utilize SignUp.com (formally named VolunteerSpot) for online signup forms. This works just like SignupGenius and others, but we are able to automatically credit all the hours you sign up for on

SignUp.com toward your yearly total. If you are a Room Parent or PSP Room

Parent please email [email protected] for the Turnstone SignUp.com School License Code. (This is what ensures your volunteers automatically get credit for their hours.) If you just need to record your hours please visit turnstonepsp.org.

The online application period for the 2017-18 school year will open on January 17, 2017 and close on March 1, 2017. You must have a SchoolMint account to submit an application (one account per family). Applications submitted during the lottery application period will be part of a school lottery. Applicants who apply after the lottery application period ends will not be part of the lottery; instead they will be added to the waiting list(s) using their application submission date and time. The lottery date will be posted on the website once all applications have been reviewed. Admission offer notifications will be made in SchoolMint around March 30th. Once the first admission offers have been made, you can login to your family’s SchoolMint account to view your student’s offer status or waiting list status. Students Currently Attending Our Schools

If your student attends Grades K-5 at Meyers or Turnstone, Grades T-K/K-7 at Gateway or Grades 7-11 at Western Sierra, please do NOT submit a new application.

In early February 2017, the primary contact in your family’s SchoolMint account will receive a notification (and access code) to complete the Student Intent to Return.

If your student will not be returning next academic school year, you will complete a Student Withdrawal Notification and upload it with the Student Intent to Return.

Western Sierra will hold a meeting for families of current Turnstone or Meyers Grade 6 or Gateway Grade 8 students who are interested in continuing next year at Western Sierra for Grade 7 or Grade 9, respectively. There will also be an opportunity for your current student to shadow a Western Sierra student. Admission to Western Sierra Grades 7 and 9 will be offered to any continuing student from Meyers or Turnstone Grade 6 or Gateway Grade 8 first, followed by all other applicants ranked in the school’s 2017-18 lottery.

Strategic Review Questionnaire Dear RAFOS Community, As you may know, Rocklin Academy Family of Schools is embarking on a six-month strategic planning process to solidify our vision and shared priorities for the future. Feedback from our community is critical to our planning. Before the Thanksgiving break, we held a Town Hall meeting where over 75 parents and community members shared their experiences, concerns, and outstanding questions for the future of the organization. We are eager to gather your input on these questions, which provide an opportunity to share your experiences, insights, and ideas. We appreciate your response to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/rafos by Friday, December 9th. Your feedback will help us continue to improve in order to prepare all students for their greatest academic and personal success. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thank you!

Rocklin Academy Family of Charter Schools Strategic Planning

October 2016 — March 2017

Rocklin Academy Family of Charter Schools is engaging in a six-month strategic planning process in order to support continuous improvement of our existing schools and ensure organizational growth. Our strategic planning process, facilitated by Third Plateau, a Northern California-based social impact strategy firm, emphasizes community feedback and stakeholder engagement throughout. We want to hear from each and every one of you who play a critical role in the success of our schools. Your voice will ensure a strategic plan that is ambitious, meaningful, and actionable. Below is a summary of how and when you may be asked to provide input over the course of the next six months: Strategic Planning Committee (October – March): The Strategic Planning Committee is the central hub for all strategic planning activity and communication. This group of approximately 10 individuals is comprised of diverse organizational perspectives (leadership, board members, teachers, staff, etc.). The Strategic Planning Committee will convene for a kick-off meeting, two committee retreats, and a final meeting at the close of the process. Throughout the process, these individuals will be your “go-to” for all strategic planning-related questions. Stakeholder Interview (October-November): Third Plateau will interview 20-25 representatives from internal and external stakeholder groups to get a 360° understanding of our priorities, needs, and opportunities. Interviewees will include school leadership, board members, teachers, staff, parents, students, community partners, district representatives, and issue experts. These conversations enable our community to share their unique perspectives and experiences with Rocklin Academies. Staff Meetings & Community Town Hall (November): Third Plateau will facilitate 1.5-hour staff meetings at each school site to gauge feedback from our team on areas of improvement and ideas for the future. Third Plateau will also

facilitate a two-hour Community Town Hall to engage parents, families, and community members in planning. Sub-Committee Planning (January-February): Later in the planning process, Third Plateau will convene sub-committees to work through specific components of the strategic plan, such as key performance indicators and metrics, and tactics and implementation. These small groups will include Strategic Planning Committee members and other stakeholders (staff, teachers, parents, board, or community partners). General Feedback (January – March): We will keep lines of communication open with our staff, board, and parent community throughout this process, circulating draft documents and providing periodic planning updates. We will continue to welcome feedback, ideas, questions, and concerns throughout the planning process. Thank you in advance for your willingness to engage with our planning process! We look forward to the conversations ahead. RAFOS Administration
