Past Commodore Johnny Atherton’s Bout Time won first; Past Commodore Wayne Tisdale’s Alligator won second; and Captain John Heath’s Loophole won third place. How about that for a clean sweep!! In addition, several GYC vessels also represented the club. THE LOG SHEET

Compiled By Past Commodore Wayne Tisdale The folks at the Madisonville Wooden Boat Show always look forward to the GYC fleet arriving each year as we bring the largest contingent of classic wooden vessels as one group attending the show. 2010 is the third year we have “officially” attended as an official GYC event under the guidance of the powerboat committee serving as our fall rendezvous. Some of the boats have previously attended individually in the past but this event has come to be one of the biggest events of the boating year at GYC. GYC has arguably the most significant fleet of wooden vessels on the Mississippi Sound and probably beyond. There are 9 classic vessels docked at GYC and one other that resides in Ocean Springs. This year GYC presented 7 wooden classics to compete in the annual show in Madisonville, Louisiana, and won the top three places in the lugger

class at the show. Past Commodore Johnny Atherton’s Bout Time won first; Past Commodore Wayne Tisdale’s Alligator won second; and Captain John Heath’s Loophole won third place. How about that for a clean sweep!! In addition, several GYC vessels also represented the club. They were Rufnek II, captained and crewed

by Commodore Elect Teal Salloum, Past Commodore Michael Hage, Quartermaster Lawrence Hage and the able leadership of Sherman Muths III as Director of Parties aboard this fine wooden vessel. Captain George Boddie and the Madame II presented a fine showing as always as did the historic Van AlburtLee captained by Past Commodores Tommy and Harry Hewes and crewed by the Hewes extended family. The Freedom captained by Billy Hewes III and Craig Bounds came over from Ocean Springs and completed our group. The GYC Plastic Boat Society accompanied the gathering of wooden classics with the participation of the Miss Audrey captained by Woody Bailey; Meaux Better captained by Past Commodore Chris and First Mate Tina Creighton; Double Shot, skippered by Jason Smith and Drew Allen; the GlassSea by Dickie and Nancy Dunaway; SeaQuestered by Captain Steve Simpson, and a recent addition to the GYC fleet was Greg Smith skippering his Big Blue Boat to Madisonville to join in the fun. lagged a little behind with a mechanical problem but quickly made the repair and caught up in short order. The fleet followed a course of the Intercoastal Waterway to the Rigolets. After passing through this beautiful waterway the fleet entered Lake Pontchartrain at approximately noon. The weather was beautiful and the voyage was very pleasant. The run across the lake was every bit as nice with the exception of a bit of engine trouble on the Bout Time

as we neared the Pontchartrain Causeway. The Freedom towed Bout Time a short distance under the causeway to the Tchefuncte River where she docked under her own power. The needed part was waiting and within a few hours Bout Time was ready for adventure once again. The GYC fleet arrived in Madisonville at approximately 4 pm which made the trip a little less than 9 hours. The first evening of the GYC Madisonville Rendezvous is always celebrated with a party sponsored by the Powerboat Committee featuring good food, and music provided by Bout Time. All attending had a great time visiting, eating and enjoying the spirits that abounded from all vessels. It was rumored that the “midnight run on the Tchefuncte” occurred once again from a location near or aboard the Rufnek II, but that has not been confirmed. Although the weary condition of the crew of Rufnek on the next day is very suspicious. This year a Madisonville Rendezvous T‐Shirt was created and very quickly became a much sought after item. There were people attending the show that picked up on the navy blue shirts with the GYC fleet pictured on the back and requests for purchase were

many. All were sold, mostly to GYC members, within a very short time. Next year we will try to produce the shirt earlier so other GYC members will have an opportunity to purchase. Friday was a day to rest, recover and prepare for the activities of the wooden boat show on Saturday. Friday evening the Captain’s Party was held at the Lake Pontchatrain Basin Museum and as always provided more food than you could eat, all the spirits you would care to drink, and as much music and dancing you could stand. Saturday and Sunday the Madisonville Wooden Boat Show went off without a hitch. The weather was beautiful, the crowds were large and everything in general was just a really fun time for everyone. There were lots of boats and lots of people. Most of the boats left around daybreak Monday for the return run back to GYC which was also a nice ride. It was a little windy between the Rigolets and Cat Island but not at all uncomfortable. The fleet ran together again on the return trip with the first boat arriving at GYC around 3 PM. We are already looking ahead to next year when we hope to increase the number of boats attending both classic wooden vessels and our friends in the plastic boat society. Rumor has it the plastic boat guys are going to organize and elect Woody Bailey as their leader who will be called the Plastadore.

As we end this year and welcome in 2011, make sure and ring in the New Year at the Club! This will be my last Commodore Report. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Commodore and I thank you for the opportunity. I also want to thank this year’s Governing Board, committee chairs and committee members for all of their hard work in serving the Club. Of course, we also have an extremely dedicated staff and manager that keeps the Club operating on a daily basis. Please take the opportunity when you see all of these persons to thank them for their service. This year has seen a number of accomplishments at the Club and I would like to highlight a few: ‐ the establishment of our high school sailing program, which has been a huge success (many thanks to Sam Vasquez and Sam Hopkins for spearheading this effort); ‐ the establishment of our tax‐exempt sailing foundation, which will be beneficial in supporting our sailing activities such as the high school sailing (the two Sams took the lead on this as well, along with Vice Commodore Salloum chairing the committee); ‐ the revision to the Junior Resident membership category in the By Laws, which will make the Club

more affordable and accessible to younger members and will be instrumental in the growth of the Club; ‐ the hiring of our new manager, Steve Chatelain, who brings extensive club management experience and fresh ideas to the Club. Steve has already overhauled the kitchen and has brought a new energy to the operation of the Club. We are excited that he and his family are here. Finally, I want to thank you, the members, for your continued support of the Club. Please support incoming Commodore Salloum and the new Governing Board as they chart our course for the coming year. If any of you would like to chair or serve on a committee in the upcoming year, please let me, Commodore Salloum or a board member know – we can always use more member involvement! See you at the Club, Marty Warren, Commodore

COMMODORE’S REPORT

The House Committee, working with the wisdom of our new manager, have agreed on a few changes that are necessary for a sound and fiscally responsible approach to running the GYC house. Please review the following important changes: • A new breakfast menu, hours 8 am to 11 am with a great kid’s menu. To be served on Saturday only.

• Improved daily a la carte menu with a daily blue plate special for members Monday thru Saturday.

Due to low utilization, lunch buffet will be eliminated Tuesday thru Thursday. The kitchen is now prepared with food prep production protocols to deliver great food in a timely manner.

• Our traditional, but expanded, Friday Seafood Buffet will remain, and at a REDUCED PRICE. Mondays’ Red Beans & Rice will remain.

• Soup & salad bar will still be available Monday thru Friday and Sunday Brunch.

• Having run their full year, the monthly birthday and anniversary have now ended. Additionally, the poorly utilized Friday night babysitting service will be discontinued for now.

If you have any questions, please contact House Committee Chairman Michael Seicshnaydre or Steve Chatelain, our new General Manager. Sincerely, Michael Seicshnaydre, House Committee Chairman

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

December, 2010 It has been an exciting November at the Club. Our team of professional staff is geared up and ready to serve the membership for the Christmas Holiday Season. Hopefully as you visit the Club you will feel the excitement of what we believe will be a very successful December. You may see a few new faces or experience some changes, but don’t be alarmed. We all have the same targeted goal in our sights and will work very hard to achieve them. We have an awesome new a‐la‐carte lunch menu coming out on Tuesday, December 07, 2010. The menu will be served on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On these days we will no longer offer a hot buffet. Instead, an a‐la‐carte menu, the Soup and Salad Bar and a Daily Hot Lunch Special will be offered. The a‐la‐carte menu will be offered on Saturdays as well. Our plan for the new menu is to upgrade member selections and serve consistent hot food in a timely manner. The menu will be revised every six months with new, fresh market items offered. Please, your comments and suggestions are welcome on ideas you may have for our next menu that will be implemented in June, 2011.

After a very busy Christmas filled with parties and celebratory dinners, we are approaching our New Years Eve Party on December 31st. We hope that this evening will mark the beginning of a year of peace and prosperity for our Members and our Country. As promised each month I will ask a trivia question and the member who brings me the correct answer in PERSON when dining at the club on a Friday will receive a FREE meal that night for Dinner. Trivia Question for December: This well known Restaurateur, Chef, Writer and Cookbook Author from Mississippi for the past 18 years has been serving over 3.5 million meals in the Hattiesburg, Meridian areas. He is the CEO, President and Executive Chef of the Purple Parrot Café, the Crescent City Grill and the Mahogany Bar. Who is it? Lastly the GYC Staff and I would like to wish all members a safe and wonderful Holiday! Steve Chatelain General Manager GYC

Six schools sailed in the Inaugural Mississippi High School Sailing Championships held at Gulfport Yacht Club on

November 6‐7, 2010. Gulfport, St. Patrick, St. Stanislaus, Long Beach, Brother Martin, and Sacred Heart battled it out in all conditions for the title. Each team consisted of three boats in three different classes (420‐A, 420‐B, & Laser Radial). On Saturday, 10 races (10‐20 mins) were sailed in a 10‐15kt northerly which lead to some back and forth racing. Brother Martin ended the day in the lead of two classes with a nice margin with 44 points. Next was St. Stanislaus with 95 points and St. Patrick Catholic was 3rd with only one point behind at 96 points. Sunday the wind started as a nice east breeze at 8‐10 and swung around to the south, lighting up to 5‐8 kts. Since Brother Martin is a New Orleans school, the race on Sunday was really between the two top Mississippi Teams— St. Stanislaus and St. Patrick Catholic. St. Patrickʹs skippers Hugh Hawkins, Grant Kalil and Sam Hopkins showed great composure and stayed consistent, and minimizing risk to come out of the day 3 points ahead of St. Stanislaus, and became the first ever Mississippi High School sailing champions. It was a great achievement for the team as it was their first ever High School Regatta. The weekend could have not been pulled off without the help of Principle Race Officer Sam Hopkins and crew of Shannon Weatherly, Christie Yoste, Danielle Hopkins, & Skip Kalil. Jordan Brown was Johnny‐On‐The spot moving the three marks

around in the big green flat boat. The GYC Grill’Men Club of Mike Schantz, Harry Yoste, and Ali Bass kept the sailors full after the races with warm food. The monster burgers hit the spot! The land crew of Jennifer Kalil, Julie Christian, and Lisa Ladner kept the t‐shirts flowing and sailors happy.

Sandi, Alex, and Steve, thanks for your support and patience when dealing with the sailors. We know we are babies when we get off the water. Thank you all!

Assistance Needed On a different subject, I need some help getting the floating docks up to par. We have the lumber thanks to the old decking from the double‐wide. I really could use a hand in making them safe and secured properly to the bulkhead. It is task that can be knocked out cheap with a good plan and a days work. With the boats being used daily and the type of racing where they are used as boat swaps, they really need to dressed up. Let me know of any ideas that can help as I am not a carpenter.
