For organisations of any size, job evaluation can
be a complex task. Decision Tree is a module of
the Hay Group Job Evaluation ManagerSM Portal
(JEM), which builds Hay Group’s class-leading
methodology into a powerful online solution.
It makes the process efficient, time-effective
and thorough, sustaining the return on your
investment in job evaluation.
A database created with inherent guidelines and
built-in controls, guides the evaluator. This user-
friendly system has configurable access rights, so
only the appropriate resources can view and, if
permissible, create or modify data.
By using standardised questions, Decision Tree generates an electronic database of results that provides the company with the ability to rank jobs, do grade and factor comparisons, and produces a visual, defensible audit trace to validate the process.
“Using Hay Group Decision Tree is a seamless and transparent process. The Web-based technology enables all facilitators to access the same system no matter their location.”
Decision Tree will add value and simplify your job evaluation process
Auditing & Governance
The system generates a database of jobs with an evaluation
trace for each job. Automated tables correlate job levels
that correspond to Hay Group Guide Chart points and/or
your company’s preferred grading system. Built-in audit
procedures ensure sound grading and reward governance in
all parts of the organisation, and a basis for consistent and fair
compensations across the entire organisation.
What do we look at ?Decision Tree evaluates jobs
across a range of factors which
are similar in nature to those
used within the Hay Group
Guide Charts. These factors can
be catagorised into a business
process model that reflects the
importance of the individual
factors of each job.
User-friendly & ParticipativeMakes the process easier as it is a participative and inclusive
job evaluation process with line managers and employees.
The branching format of questions and answers generates a
score for the specific job under review. This process simplifies
and standardises job evaluation through its transparency and
user-friendliness. As a result, DT is used extensively in union-
intensive industries.
AccessibilityA time-saving job evaluation process is provided for
organisations of all sizes and across all industries. With
definitive records stored in a single location, the web-based
system enables secure access to data from anywhere in the
world, which enhances consistency, saves time and avoids
duplication.

Robust Process Ensures a rigorous review and approval process. For large or
diverse organisations that have difficulties ensuring standards
across units, the question-answer approach of the system
allows less subjectivity and interpretation. Language and
phrasing can be customised to suit an organisation’s specific
terminology and the cultures in which it operates.
ProblemSolving
Business Case: FMCGThe challengeThis rapidly expanding beverage company had no means of explaining seniority of roles and promotions and therefore required a system that better communicated and explained the various levels of work and differences between jobs.
The solutionKorn Ferry Hay Group implemented Decision Tree which that enabled job grading in a rigorous and robustmanner. The system could address the six factors relevant to the efficient and effective functioning of an organisation and, because the system is so transparent, trust and credibility were built amongst employees, while management was now able to address employee’s questions and concerns more confidently.
The result A significant improvement in rating the complexity of roles. The client can broadband more confidently, thereby matching
jobs more specifically and accurately. Senior staff support the system because of the transparency
of the system, generating more trust from HR.
Business Case: Multinational TelecomsThe challengeAs a large telecoms organisation dispersed across 21 countries, there was no central repository in terms of a grading system. Therefore, there was no way to ascertain whether grades across branches in various countries were aligned.
The solutionDecision Tree (DT) was recommended as a progression of data management. Once the database had been set up, a technical training exercise familiarised the client with the on-line system.
The result The outcomes of this project doubled the number of users. All evaluations and results regionally and globally are tracked,
in one secure, central location. Registered users can access the system from any computer,
without further software installations or IT firewall difficulties.
“The system is very thorough,
robust, rigorous and flexible,
thereby allowing one to
grade roles very confidently
throughout organisation. I
would absolutly recommend
this system to corporates.”

“Web-based Decision
Tree has allowed us to not
only keep abreast with
technology, but has also
allowed us to easily view
all positions that are being
evaluated by our regional
job evaluation facilitators.
This has greatly assisted us
in keeping our validation
requirements up to date.”

Getting Started Training on how to use Decision Tree is a critical component to ensure a robust grading process and
enables consistent and fair compensation across the entire organisation.
Business arrangements cover the setup and annual subscription fees determined by the number of
employees in your organisation. The setup fee occurs in the first year only; the subscription fee is
charged in year one and annually thereafter. License agreements, conditions and warranty terms will
be set out in the subscriber agreement.
Business Case: Financial SectorThe challengeFor this large bank that utilised broadbanding, it became difficult to market price positions consistently and accurately. In effect, a proper grading system was needed to ensure that market pricing could be conducted more effectively.
The solutionA user-friendly and transparent grading system was implemented by Korn Ferry hay Group. In comparison to other systems, Decision Tree was affordable and through its use of an extensive database of questions, it was detailed and did not place a large factor-weighting on the financial component of jobs. The client felt that this would not influence the evaluation, but rather accurately pitch the position in terms of overall complexity.
The result All needs of the client were met by Decision Tree. Because of the transparency of the system, it received the
approval and acceptance of the unions.
Business Case: Oil and GasThe challengePreviously, one individual had been tasked with completing all job evaluations within the organisation. Crises hit when this person left the company and the client was unable to conduct any job evaluations on current or new roles. Further, the organisation is spread across different regions, which was problematic as there was no consistent approach to arriving at job evaluation results.
The solutionThe web-based version of Decision Tree enabled a consistency of evaluations across the organisation. In addition, it was an appropriate solution for the large number of junior positions, as it is user friendly and applicable to jobs below 800 Hay units.
The result A greater consistency and speed in terms of the evaluations
has been experienced. Those in the various regions can log onto one database. It has assisted with organisational structure and design in
terms of succession planning and career progression. Appropriate pay levels for individuals are now determined.
“I am very comfortable with
the system, as it measures
a number of factors, and
the end result is much more
believable and transparent.”
Reward Specialist
“We are extremely happy with
the system. What we like is
the speed of the evaluation
and the consistency of the
system.”
