From President Carol: I just returned from a wonderful two week vacation to China with my family.  Our first stop was Beijing and surrounds followed by a five day cruise on the Yangtze River.  We ended the trip with a two day stay in Shanghai.  We visited thousand-year old sites, museums, gardens, opera / dinner shows and toured the

old and new parts of several cities.  We had demonstrations of Chinese arts and crafts and lectures on Chinese culture.  We were monitored on the trip although not intrusively. After speaking with Chinese citizens, I am so thankful I live in the USA.  China was a great place to visit, but--(fill in the cliche)!  I'm putting together a video record of the trip that I will share at a future Pilot meeting.

Pi l o t S c h o l a rs h i p Houses are home to 17 to 23 female students who live together under the same roof while attending college. Management of the house is by the students themselves. In this cooperative living arrangement, residents take

turns planning meals, shopping, cooking and cleaning up after the nightly group dinners. Household duties are assigned and performed by the students weekly. The budgeted cost of food and utilities for the semester is shared among the residents, with an average house services bill per student of less than $1,000. This rent-free housing saves each student close to $12,000 each year. Each house is supervised by a House Manager who is an upperclassman selected by the Southern Scholarship Foundation.

The Pilot Scholarship House Foundation (PSHF) is able to make a difference thanks to a unique partnership with the Southern Scholarship Foundation, the organization responsible for the process ing of scholarship applications and maintaining the Pilot Scholarship Houses and other scholarship houses located on select Florida college campuses. The PSHF currently assists 61 young women each semester toward their goal of a college education.

What is the Pilot International Founders Fund (PIFF)

Congratulations to the PI 2014-2015 Executive Committee! Our International Officers are:

Sherry Johnson - PresidentShannon Clegg - President ElectGwen Yarbrough - Vice PresidentFaith Stamps - SecretaryKaren Cupit - TreasurerAndrea Babb - DirectorBarbara McKenzie - DirectorConnie Moore - DirectorPatricia Whatley - DirectorConnie Moore is the Florida District’s Executive Committee Representative (ECR)

The Pilot International Founders Fund was established to support the community-based work of Pilot Clubs by helping to underwrite Club efforts to serve in the areas of Youth Development & Leadership, Brain Safety & Fitness and Caring for Families in Times of Need. Through the Pilot International Founders Fund, Pilot International and its local Pilot Clubs are able to improve the lives of others through education,

volunteerism, financial support and research.  The Founders Fund also funds brain-related research, BrainMinder programs and materials, and administrative/operational costs.

Since its inception in 1977, the Pilot International Founders Fund has assisted local clubs in their efforts to serve and meet the need of others through an extensive grants program that has disbursed over $1,100,000.The Pilot International Founders Fund also provides scholarships that support graduate and undergraduate students working in fields that relate to Pilot International’s main areas of service focus.  These scholarships are:  Pilot International Scholarships, Becky Burrows Memorial Scholarship, Maria Newton Sepia Memorial Scholarship,  Ruby Newhall Memorial Scholarship and Bob King Memorial Scholarship. Some reminders:Ø  September is Founders Month! A Founder’s Day Luau will be held in Panama City on September 27, 2014. Ø  We select our Club’s Sweetheart at the September meeting, and honor them in December at our Holiday gathering.  A minimum $25 contribution to Pilot International must be postmarked by September 30 for inclusion of the club's sweetheart in the Pilot Log. Sweetheart forms and certificate will be in the August/September PI Club Mailing.Pilot International Sweethearts are Pilots who exemplify the qualities outlined in Pearl Sparks' Code of Ethics. By nominating a club member for this distinction, clubs support the Pilot International Founders Fund and honor their club Sweetheart for his or her dedication and devotion to Pilot International.Ø  Grants should be postmarked by October 1 and sent to the District PIFF Rep in order to meet the Grant deadline of October 15. Look in the August/September Club mailing for the Grant and Scholarship Applications.Ø  Thanks to the efforts of Pilots everywhere, the second week in November has been named INTERNATIONAL CARE & KINDNESS WEEK! International Care and Kindness Week was created to bring awareness to how simple acts can change a day, a life or the world by simply showing someone you care.  Take Time to Care and Be Kind!

Parliamentary Procedure Tip of the Month from Charlotte: Do you have something you want our club to consider?  Simply make a motion for all to discuss and vote on.  It's not too complicated and any voting member can do it.  To bring a motion before a group such as the Pilot Club, a member needs to rise (not necessary in smaller groups like our club), obtain the floor from the chair by saying "Madam President" or "Madam Chair" and upon recognition from the chair, make a motion.  The proper terminology is to say "I move to..." or "I move that..."  Saying "I make a motion to..." is incorrect.  Be sure to include all the necessary facts in your motion.  For instance, if you want to have the club donate money to an organization be sure to state which organization, how much money and if there is specific intended use for the donation.  For example, "I move the club donate $500.00 to Southern Scholarship Foundation to be used for purchase of a new stove for the Pilot House at FSU."  You can do it!

Remember when? Seems like only yesterday but it was four years ago that we celebrated our 75th anniversary of being a Pilot Club. That means, June 10, 2015 will be our 80th year. Not too soon to start planning a celebration!
