Keflico A/S - Specialists in hardwood and panels for more than 60 years
The environment in focus- sustainably sourced wood
The environment is one of the three core values of Keflico.
- Naturally the environment is important to us all, and that is why the demand for environmentally certified wood continues to increase. As one of the leading hardwood and oanel distributors in Denmark, Keflico wants to contribute to this positive trend, by offering you a wide range of FSC® and PEFCTM certified products - for example decking and cladding in hardwood.
You can find the FSC and PEFC-logo in this brochure on products which are available in FSC or PEFC. Keflico also offer other kinds of certified products - both a wide range of hardwood and wooden panel products.
The FSC-label stands for sustainability. In a FSC-certified forest they do not cut down more wood than the forest can reproduce. FSC is your guarantee, that animals and plants are protected, and that those who work in the forest are ensured education, safety-equipment and proper remuneration. This is why we support the FSC-label.

Jatoba decking
Jatoba is a beautiful and extremely hard type of wood from South America. The colour varies from red to brown with very fine grain/structure. Jatoba has a huge appeal and presents itself attractively with its smooth profile. It is recommended that you treat Jatoba with oil specifically made for hardwood at least once a year, so the natural glow from the wood is brought out and maintained. If you choose not to treat jatoba with hardwood oil, it will patinate with a beautiful silver-grey colour (please see page 19).

Teak decking
Teak is a very elegant and exclusive type of wood with many benefits, which makes it well qualified for decking. Nice golden colour and structure. If you do not maintain Teak with oil, the decking patinates with a beautiful silver-grey colour. If you choose to treat the decking with hardwood oil once a year the natural glow is brought out and maintained longer.

Bangkirai Premium decking
Bangkirai has a nice golden brown colour. The decking boards can be installed with a smooth or grooved front. If you maintain this type of decking with oil twice a year, the natural glow in the wood is maintained. Bangkirai patinates with a light silver-grey colour.
Please note that pin holes can occur to a limited extent in this type of wood. Keflico’s decking in Bangkirai is of premium quality - a higher quality than ”standard and better”, because it has significantly fewer pinholes than usual.

Oak Rustic decking
Beautiful and particularly strong type of wood from Europe. The colour is a pallet of light brown nuances. European Oak has a varying structure in the grain; this provides the decking with a fascinating and rustic surface. European oak patinates with a beautiful grey colour if it is not treated with oil. If you want the decking to maintain its natural light colour and glow as much as possible, you can treat the wood with hardwood oil. Rustic quality with unlimited knots is permitted in this type of wood. In oak, there is also a relatively high level of tannin, which may leach out.

Accoya® decking
Accoya decking is Radiata Pine that has been through an acetylation, which is a modification of the wood the whole way into the core with natural acid. This modification causes the wood to be stable and resistance to rot and fungus/dry-rot is increased. Accoya is light coloured, stable and easy to process. The wood is marked with a type 1 in durability because of the given warranty on 50 years above earth and 25 years in the ground. At the same time Accoya is CO2 neutral and 100 % recycle friendly, because it comes from sustainable sources. It is recommended that you treat the wood with fungicide-oil minimum once a year to maintain the natural colour of the wood. Accoya is FSC or PEFC and Cradle to Cradle Gold certified and it is also swan labelled.
Dimensions: By agreement - example 20 x 145 mm / 25 x 190 mmProfile: By agreement - example smooth / smooth or small grooved
Because of the exceptional stability of Accoya, Accoya decking, opposite to other wood species, can be installed with smaller space between the boards, in wide dimensions up to 190 mm, without the boards curving.

DeckingThermo Pine decking
Heat treated / thermo Pine wood has a thoroughly beatiful brown glow, which can be compared to exotic wood species.
The thermo treatment happens at high temperatures and the furnace chamber becomes, through this process, saturated with water vapor to avoid the wood burning. It is during this ”simple” process, that Thermo Pine is made.
During the treatment turpentine and formaldehyde, among other resins, disappears from the timber. No chemical additives is added during the isothermal treatment. This heat treatment / thermo-process provides the unique properties of the Thermo Pine - including a long natural life and a unique dimensional stability.
Dimensions: 26 × 117 mm. Profile: Small grooved / smooth
Lists, sidings and other special productions can be produced to order.
Since there are other demands to Thermo Pine decking, than other wood species / decking types, it must be installed according to the following installation guide.
DECKING of Thermo Pine installation guide
PreparationsMark the area, in which you wish to install your decking, with sticks and white or coloured string. Make sure that the ground is even and levelled.
Cover the ground with a membran to prevent grass and various plants growing up between the boards.
Laying the joists / wooden frameThe frame for the decking is made of beams / joists. Make a distance bet-ween the joists of maximum 45 cm.
All joists must be parallel, otherwise it will be visible on the line of screws or plugs.
Installation of deckingCut the boards in the lenght, you have chosen. We recommend cutting both edges of each board.
The first boards are placed against a solid edge with 5 x 60 mm A4 acid-proof screws with a flat, sublowered screw head. You may use a cord to ensure, that the boards are correcty placed.
Use 2 screws per joist to achieve optimal mounting.
Always install the screw minimum 25 mm from the edge of the board through pre-drilled holes, otherwise you risk the board splitting or the screw breaking.
Roofing felt: It is recommended that you use roofing felt between board and screw to lead rainwater away and counteract rot.
Spacers: Make a gap of minimum 3 mm between the boards for drainage.
The first board is placed against a solid edge with a distance of 7-10 mm. Use a string to en-sure it is placed properly.
Next board is installed pa-rallel to the previous board, and so on. Please note that Thermo Pine boards are reversible, which gives you free choice between the small-grooved and smooth surface.
MaintenanceWe recommend that you maintain your decking with oil at least once a year. Use oil with pigment/colour to for bedst muligt at bevare træets naturlige lød. Uden behandling vil træet patinere med en grålig farve.
AccessoriesKeflico distributes various accessories for your decking; hardwood joists, oil, screws, plugs and more. See the next page.

Joists
Angelim Pedra: 45 × 68 mm
Joists in extremely durable Angelim Pedra wood. This type of wood is resis-tant to insect attacks and very durable in water.
Keflico recommend hardwood joists. If you use another, softer type of wood, the risks of the decking working loose will increase.
Accessories
Screws, plugs,plug drill and oil
The decking has to be installed with stainless steel screws inserted into pre-drilled holes.
Keflico supply 5 x 60 mm screws for 20-21 mm decking and 5 x 70 mm screws for 25 mm decking plus a 15 mm special plug drill for pre-drilling of holes for wood plugs.
When the smooth side of the decking is used as the front side, wooden plugs provide the decking with a perfect finish by covering the visible screw heads. The wooden plugs are available in all of the types of wood in our assortment. They come in bags of 500 items/units.
If you want the natural colour and glow to be maintained in the wood, we recommend our 2,5 liter colour pigmen- ted oil. 1 liter is enough to cover 10-13 square metres.
In addition, we also recommend Hydrowax for smearing on the ends on freshly sawn wood. This helps prevent the ends from drying out. Keflico also sells Hydrowax.

Western Red Cedar
Sidings in Canadian WRC with a warm red-brown colour. This type of wood has a high content of “thuja implimer” and “fungicides” which prevents it from rotting and resists fungus; this is why you can use the wood untreated. But if you want the wood to maintain it’s naturally warm glow, we recommend that you treat the wood with hardwood oil at least once a year. Keflico produces only WRC cladding in quality # 2-clears-only - Really good quality, which is free of knots.

Facade
Laths have to be installed with a maximum distance of 60 cm.
When attaching the mahogany cladding, stainless steel nails and screws must be used. Nails 1,6 x 50 mm and screws 4 x 50 mm.
The screw or the nail have to be installed about 30 mm from above the bottom of the cladding in the thick end, without causing it to be nailed to the underlying board. The cladding has to be installed with a distance of 3 mm so the board can move according to temperature fluctua-tions and humidity.
MaintenanceIf you wish to maintain the natural colour and glow of the wood, we suggest, that you maintain it with an oil, intended for hardwood used outdoors. The frequency depends on how exposed facade lies to the elements. Keflico dealer special products that are suitable for the purpose.

Attachment with visible screws
Installation guide decking
1. Tiles as support
It is recommended to use joists made out of hardwood. - All joists have to be parallel otherwise it will be visible on the row of screws and plugs.
1. Timber frame as backing
Hold a distance between the joists of maximum: 70 cm by 25 mm thickness, 60 cm by 21 mm thickness and 50 cm by 20 mm thickness.
Joists made from hardwood of 45 x 68 mm should be a maximum span of 100 cm.
2. Double joists
If necessary use double joists at joints.
If the decking is installed against a wall, you can with advantage make a slight drop so rainwater will be led away from the wall.
3. Roofing felt
It is recommended that you use roofing felt between board and screw to lead rainwater away and counteract rot.
4. Spacers
Make a gap of 7-10 mm between the boards so the wood can move around where there is a change in temperature and humidity.
The first board is installed against a solid edge with a gap of 7-10 mm. if necessary use a string to make sure that it lays the right way.
5. Clamp
Since few decking boards are completely straight, you may want to make use of clamps to force the board into the right position during attachment.
Installation of joists
Installation of decking
1
6. Pre-drilling of holes
Pre-drill the holes with a sub-lowering drill. In this way, the screw is levelled with the surface after fitting. Screw holes have to be at least 25 mm from the edge.
7. Attachment
The decking has to be installed with acidproof A4 steel. The screws should always be installed from above and it should be at minimum 5 x 60 mm t0 20-21 mm decking and and to 25 mm boards you should use 5 x 70 mm screws. 2/3 of the screw should be attached to the underlying wood construction.

6. Pre-drill of holes
Pre-drill the holes with a 15 mm plug drill.
Screw holes have to be at least 25 mm from the edge.
7. Gluing
The manufactured plugs are installed with waterproof glue. Put the plugs in so the grain from the wood plugs fits with the grain on the decking.
Pound in the plug but let some of the plug stick up. Wipe extra glue off immediately.
8. Ungluing of plug
The rest of the plug can be removed with a sharp wood chisel or you can belt sand the whole decking. In spite of which method you have used it is recommended that you sand the decking. If you have used a smooth profile decking, you should always sand down afterwards.
Installation guide decking
Information about washout and colouring
Some wood species can give colour after being installed, until washout due to wind and weather. This is natural. It is also recommended to sweep sawdust from drilling and cutting away immediately, as this can give a reddish color.
Also, do not lay tools in raw iron on the patio boards as this may cause discoloration. Metal splinters from cutting can also cause discoloration.
IMPORTANT:
Do not use hidden brackets because they do not provide the same solid installation as visible screws or plugs provide.
Always 25 mm from edge
Avoid the wood splitting by installing it min. 25 mm from the edge of the board.
Always pre-drill
Remember to pre-drill or the screw will break.
Always countersink
Remember to countersink to provide a smooth surface to walk on.
Attachment with plugs
Typical mistakes that should be avoided
STORAGE
6 87
Storage and installation of hardwood decking should take place outdoors.
Storage should be under a roof to avoid direct sunlight and preferably in a place withgood ventilation. The boards must be on a level surface; otherwise they may change in shape.
The products are only for outdoor use.

Once you have decided to invest in a patio or facade in hardwood, there are some fundamental properties of wood, which you should be aware of.
Wood is a beautiful and vibrant material throughout its working life. This means that the wood’s appearance and colour changes throughout its entire lifetime due to weather influences from the weather such as sun, wind and rain. Most untreated hardwood species patinate with a silver-grey color - As an example see Jatoba on the next page.
If you want to preserve the wood’s beautiful glow, it will require, that you maintain the decking by cleaning and oiling it once a year. This will protect the wood against weather conditions.
You do not necessarily have to invest many hours in your new patio or facade made of hardwood, you just simply have to understand, that its life has only just begun, when it has been installed.
Cleaning the patio and facade
Over time rain and moisture will make your wooden decking / cladding dirty, this appears in the form of green algae, dirt and other coatings. Therefore you should clean your patio if needed.
To clean your patio, rinse it with water, apply thepatio-cleaner with a brush and then scrub the surface lengthwise. Afterwards the decking should be rinsed thoroughly. The treatment can be repeated as needed.
Are you planning to oil your patio subsequently, you must let the wood dry for a day or so, before you start the oil treatment.
Oiling patio and facade
A new patio or facade of hardwood should be treated with hardwood oil even before it is used. We recommend that you maintain your wooden deck / facade with oil at least once a year.
Use hardwood oil with colour pigments and fungicides. The oil should be UV-resistant and of a non-curing type. In the first season we recommend, that you let the wood be filled by oiling it 2-3 times. The wood patinates, if it does not get oil.
The oil protects the wood, because it helps the surface to become more resistant to weather influences. Risks of cracking are reduced by oiling / waxing and it also works as a ”breath of fresh air” to your decking, while it highlights the wood grain. Remember to give the end of the boards some wax.
Frequency of oiling depends on how exposed the patio or facade is to wind and weathering. If the wood is not treated often enough, it will patinate and become greyish.
How to:
1. Before you begin oiling, you should clean yourpatio or facade thoroughly.
2. Then check that the patio or facade is completely clean and dry. Oiling shall take place in only dry weather, so the oil gets the best conditions to soak into the wood.
3. The oil should be stirred thoroughly before use.
4. The oil is applied with a brush or other painting tools. Always start with the ends of the boards.
5. After maximum 20 minutes remove excess oil from patio/ facade with a clean and dry cloth.
Repeat the above, if the wood does not seem saturated.
6. Do you want to make the surface extra durable; we recommend you to polish your patio/facade with a polishing machine.
7. Depending on the weather, including temperature on the day you treat the decking or cladding with oil, it will take between 24 to 48 hours, before the oil is fully cured. The wood, during this period, just like when you treat it with oil, must NOT be exposed to water.
Keflico A/S also supply special oil-products and wax, which are specially made for decking and cladding made of hardwood. Keflico also offers different kinds of fixtures (see at page 10). The products are not suitable for use indoors.
