Decision support methods for achieving sustainability targets have a long tradition in product development research. Nevertheless, one of the remaining challenges in the research area is a proper integration of product information to the early design phases for supporting analysis of sustainability impact and synthesis of suitable solution concepts. Knowledge templates (e.g. for CAD models) are well established means for storing relevant information in libraries or other form of repositories to increase efficiency of the design process by eliminating recurring tasks. This workshop shall evaluate how templates can be utilized for increasing the availability of sustainability-relevant information in early design phases. The session will be split into two parts. A first thematic input presentation will summarize the idea of sustainability templates and a first solution approach for PDM systems. The second part will be an interactive ideation session focusing on the definition of relevant information, available knowledge sources and finally ways for utilizing templates for decision support.

Sustainable Manufacturing Performance Evaluation: Integrating Product and Process Metrics for Systems Level Assessment (ID: 146) Aihua Huang, Fazleena Badurdeen

Advanced production technologies and innovative systems are needed to enable rapid and resource-efficient manufacturing of customisable products at a specific location at a specific time. Mini-modular community factories in shipping containers allows for new business models to create value in the base of the pyramid (BoP). These integrated mini-modular containers modules allow an easy exchange in process modules and are inherently intelligent. In order to ensure sustainable manufacturing systems each system consists of an energy, water, process and waste management module. Possible Community Factory projects will create significant impact by enabling manufacturers to respond to rapidly changing market dynamics with high value-added products whilst reducing time-to-market, cost, environmental footprint and set-up time. This workshop will provide key insights and developments in Community Factories as foundation to identify and define future projects and; the event will create the opportunity to identify more collaboration possibilities.

Comparison and Evaluation of Concepts for Future Recycling Processes Regarding Attrited Lead Anodes Used in the Electrowinning Process of Non-Ferrous Metals (ID: 64) Christoph Rosebrock, Stefan Bracke

Considering that sustainable development entails meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs - this concept has become a real innovation driver to grow the formal economy. Having a strong manufacturing supplier base is important to any society or community, because it stimulates all the other sectors of the economy. Developing local suppliers deserves a strong and continuous endeavour of all actors in a modern society to ensure prosperity, better life and sustainable development. The objective of this workshop is to develop and align projects to assist and manage the development of local titanium and tooling suppliers within South Africa. This workshop will provide insights and developments in key projects as foundation to identify and define future projects and; the event will create the opportunity to identify more collaboration possibilities.
