Nahant Council on Aging

Our Mission “The mission of the Nahant Council on Aging is to provide physical, emotional, and mental stimulation

enabling those sixty and over to achieve engaged and fulfilling lives in a safe environment.”

From the Director,

In December, Christians celebrate Christmas, African Americans cel-ebrate Kwanzaa, and the Jewish religion celebrates Hanukkah. Whatever you celebrate in December let’s understand why we cele-brate these events.

Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. The word Christ-mas is derived from the Old English word “Cristes maesse” which literally translates to Christ's Mass. Nobody knows the actual day of Christ birth so the date chosen was related to the Roman Saturnalia festival that lasted from the 17th -21st of December. The 25th was chosen somewhere during the 4th century AD by the heads of the church. The date became widely accepted by most branches of Christianity.

Kwanzaa was created in 1965 as the first specifically African-American holiday to give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and to celebrate themselves and their history. In the early years of Kwanzaa it was meant to be an oppositional alternative to Christ-mas. As it evolved and became mainstream, Kwanzaa supporters, in an effort to not alienate practicing Christians changed their position and stated that Kwanzaa was not created to give people an alterna-tive to their own religion or religious holiday. Today many African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa do so in addition to observing Christmas.

Hanukkah is known as the Festival of Lights or Feast of Dedication, it is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days and occurs at any time from late November to late December. The festival is observed by lighting the menorah which is a nine branch candelabra. On each night of Hanukkah one of the candles is lite, progressing to eight on the final night. Whatever you celebrate, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Linda Peterson Executive Director

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

GLSS OFFERS FREE WORKSHOP FOR ALL ADULT CANCER SURVIVORS

Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) is offering a free, evidence-based workshop for cancer survivors and their caregivers called Cancer: Thriving and Surviving. The workshop will be held at GLSS’ offices located at 8 Silsbee Street on Wednesdays from January 7 through February 11 from 10:00 a.m. –12:30 p.m. For more

information or to register please contact Kelsey Spotts, 781-586-8530.

In just 6 weekly meetings, this workshop is proven to help Cancer survivors live more active, fulfilling lives. The classes are small and supportive which helps encourage new friendships with people who under-stand how you feel. The environment allows for participants to share what they know and learn from others who are living with similar challenges.

Did you know that according to the National Institute of Senior Health one of the healthy things you can do for yourself is exercise? There are 4 major categories that we need to focus on as we age. Strength, Flexibil-ity, Balance and Endurance.

Strength - Exercises like lifting weights and using resistance bands can increase muscle strength. Lower-body strength exercises also will improve your balance. Increased muscle strength can maintain your ability to climb stairs, carry groceries, open jars, and more.

Flexibility - Stretching exercises can improve your flexibility but will not improve your endurance or strength. Improving your flexibility makes it easier for you to look over your shoulder to see what's behind you as you back the car out of the driveway, make the bed, bend over to tie your shoes, reach for a food item on a kitchen shelf, pull a sweater on over your head and .wing a golf club.

Balance - Exercises like tai chi can improve your ability to control and maintain your body's position, whether you are moving or still. Good balance is important to help prevent falls and avoid the disability that may re-sult from falling. Improving your balance can help you prevent falls, stand on tiptoe to reach something on the top shelf, walk up and down the stairs and walk on an uneven sidewalk without falling.

Endurance, or aerobic, activities like brisk walking or swimming increase your breathing and heart rate and improve the health of your heart, lungs and circulatory system. They can make it easier for you to push your grandchildren on the swings, vacuum, work in the garden, rake leaves and more.
