THE ECHO OF INDIA
Rangat girdled by woes, one on top of anotherV SENTHIL KUMAR
RANGAT, DEC 12 /--/ The residentsof Rangat are facing manifold prob-lems these days. Firstly it is the mobilephone connectivity which is literallymaking them scamper from pillar topost. The big fat government-runBSNL works at its own whim and fan-cies, its tower display switching onand off frequently. Distraught, peopletried to add Airtel SIM cards to theirphones, but the problems persist.Vodafone and Reliance do have theirtowers, but are of absolutely no use.Rumour mongers, as always are ac-tive in Middle Andaman. Rumoursare floating, that illegal activity likesmuggling of contraband is the rea-son for such satellite blips, as they arecoordinated by criminals, so they cango on with their dark deeds withoutanybody able to call the cops. Peoplehave taken to the roads through dem-onstrations, demands and complains, but to no avail. Rangat residents de-mand a tower each at all PanchayatBhawans, but who is listening? Next is
the LPG cylinder conundrum. Al-though Rangat is one of the promi-nent regions in the North and MiddleAndaman region, the basic LPG cylin-der problem seems to have become asold as its history, with no systematic ortime bound supply of the householdnecessity. People here are so much injitters about the erratic supply ofLPG, that once news of cylinder sup-ply at places like Rampur, Bakultalaor Sabri is heard, they leave all workand rush by any means they can availto get hold of a cylinder for their nextmeal. Members of families can beseen waiting outside their homes be-side their empty cylinders, day in andday out hoping to hear the elusiverumble of the LPG truck. It seemsPrime Minister’s Clean Fuel initia-tive is not applicable here. People ofRangat are demanding timely distri-bution of cylinders to save them fromrunning to other areas for collection. This menace is also spreading to otherareas of North and Middle Andaman, even when the CCS assures of amplestock of the precious LPG cylinders
all the time. But why are they notreaching the poor Rangat residents?
“Lack of basic facilities like reli-able telecom services, timely supplyof LPG refills etc has been taking atoll on residents of Rangat and adjoin-ing areas for the past few months.Consumers have been long complain-ing about recurring shortage of LPGrefills as supply has never been con-sistent at various places here. Despitea dedicated vehicle for distributionof LPG refills launched by the CCS,consistency has remained far from en-sured here. Even BSNL services hastaken a hit. This region has a goodnumber of telecom subscriptions, butunlike other parts of this territorythat blessed with constant telecomconnectivity, residents here are leftbereft of the modern day facility. Con-sumers avail almost all the servicesof BSNL from Landlines toBroadband, Cellular connections etc. However the premier service pro-vider has not been living upto the ex-pectations of scores of consumers inthis region,” said residents of Rangat.
