DEHN protects.
The powerful natural phenomenon of lightning has
fascinated mankind since the beginning of time. In
Greek mythology Zeus, the Father of Gods, is seen as
the ruler of Heavens and his power is often depicted
as a lightning bolt. The Romans attributed this same
power to Jupiter, the continental Germanic tribes to
Donar, and the North Germans to Thor. For a long
time, the enormous force of a thunderstorm was
associated with a supernatural power and humans
felt at the mercy of this power. Since the Age of
Enlightenment and the advancement of science, this
heavenly spectacle has been regarded in a more sober
light. In 1752, the kite experiment by the inventor and
statesman Benjamin Franklin demonstrated that the
phenomenon of lightning is in fact the equalisation
of an electric charge.
Lightning: Fascinating, but dangerous
2
Although nowadays we understand what is behind
this natural phenomenon, it is fascinating to watch,
and extremely dangerous. Every year, lightning kills
people and animals and destroys material assets. Most
of these deadly consequences can be prevented by
taking appropriate protection measures.
Thunderstorms in times of climate change
Increasing weather extremes: Meteorological data
say that thunderstorms are on the rise even in the
moderate European climate. In Germany alone, more
than two million lightning events are recorded every
year and the tendency is rising. Violent thunderstorms
threaten lives and cause severe damage: Hail destroys
roofs or cars, lightning strikes cause fire or surge dam-
age to electrical or electronic devices and systems and
may completely destroy them. Lightning strikes have
particularly fatal consequences in the industrial, power
generation or infrastructure sector: System failures and
production downtimes result in substantial financial
loss, and failure of fire alarm systems or emergency
centres put lives at risk.
Lightning and surge protection from DEHN
In 1910, the electrician and precision engineer Hans
Dehn set up an electrical installation company in
Nuremberg. As Hans Dehn had successfully completed
his training as a state-registered installer of lightning
rods, the installation of lightning protection systems
became an integral part of the young company
right from the start. Fascinated by external lightning
protection, Hans Dehn came up with his first lightning
protection invention in 1918 and registered his first
patent on this subject. Further patents followed in the
course of the company’s history.

“First and foremost, our innovations must benefit our customers.”Dr.-Ing. Peter Zahlmann, Managing Director
We heavily invest in research and development to create
innovative products and to continuously improve our prod-
ucts, their quality and ease of installation. 285 international
patents and inventions for numerous DEHN products and
solutions are the result of our development work. To this end,
we always have an eye on our customers’ wishes and needs.
The feedback from standardisation committees, cooperation
with research institutions and international technical confer-
ences are also considered for new and further developments
of our products.
As part of our corporate strategy, our products have to satisfy
high, uniform quality standards. They are designed so as to
meet the basic requirements of the relevant standards and
the technical prerequisites of the specific field of application.
Our products can be used in the widest variety of applica-
tions, though our focus remains on special industry and
customer solutions.
9
How can a company demonstrate unabated innovative
strength in different industries for more than 100 years?
Thanks to our love of exploring, consolidated expertise and
knowledge of the current market conditions. Our innova-
tions are based on ideas that are spawned by:
• market trends and our customers’ individual needs
• the results of our in-house research and development
work in our test laboratory
• the cooperation and professional exchange with
universities and research institutions.
Developing innovations
9 10
Innovative strength and flexibility are the key pillars of
our company and the driving force that encourages us
– as a technological leader – to new ideas, further de-
velopments and solutions tailored to customer needs.
Many examples from DEHN’s more than 100-year histo-
ry prove that success in the fields of surge protection,
lightning protection and safety equipment, not only
requires visionary thinking, know-how and experience,
but also persistence.

Unique test laboratory
A decisive factor is our renowned impulse current labora-
tory. It is essential for the successful development of new
products, systems and protection concepts: It allows us to
perform tests with lightning currents up to 400 kA (10/350
µs) under realistic conditions. For many years now, we
have been studying the characteristics of natural lightning
strikes in a lightning measuring station in Austria where
natural lightning strikes are analysed and the phenome-
non of lightning is investigated. From the results of this
fundamental research, conclusions are drawn for product
development, standardisation and our test laboratories.
Most stringent quality standards worldwide
Our aim is to provide top quality. This means that the best
materials are used for our products, most of the work steps
are carried out in-house and all products are inspected
before they leave our company. Our products and systems
comply with applicable standards. Products for the interna-
tional market can be adapted to meet the specific require-
ments of national standards. Our quality management
system is certified to the DIN EN ISO 9001 standard. All
these factors allow us to offer our customers safe, reliable
and durable products and protection solutions.
In dialogue with science
We finance an endowed professorship at the Ilmenau Uni-
versity of Technology to promote fundamental research on
modern methods, technologies and materials in the fields of
lightning and surge protection.
Numerous functional tests are performed to test the high quality of materials used in our products and components.
Clearly defined production processes form the basis for the production of high-quality products, for exam-ple the globally leading arresters from our Red/Line® product family.
In our unique impulse current laboratory we carry out product and system tests in line with international standards – also on behalf of our customers.
