M ore than 50 years ago, Roy F. Weston began translating a societal imperative — addressing the environmental threat

to the global quality of life — into a business challenge. He combined a wealth of philosophical foresight with an entrepreneurial fervor that pioneered the environmental services industry.

An honorary degree in 1981 from Drexel University, cites Mr. Weston as “having been in the forefront of the environmental movement for almost half a century — long before the assault on man-made health hazards became self evident and certainly long before the attack became a fashionable avocation for less than expert crusaders. He is an environmental statesman of vision and depth.”

Mr. Weston was an active, pronounced advocate of the environmental concept of sustainable development, defined as meeting society’s present needs and aspirations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Tirelessly, his speaking engagements, writings and personal contacts encourage private and public sectors alike to eliminate waste and environmental degradation up front through more efficient management of the world’s precious resources.

Following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin in 1933, Mr. Weston entered public sector service as a sanitary engineer for the

Wisconsin State Department of Health. After completion of his Master’s degree in sanitary engineering at New York University, he joined the Atlantic Refining Company, responsible for solving the pollution problems at its Philadelphia refineries.

Atlantic Refining management knew of Mr. Weston’s desire to begin his own environmental consulting firm and encouraged his entrepreneurial zeal. In 1949, he began consulting on a part-time basis. In 1957, he officially established the company that still bears his name.

In building his business, Mr. Weston engineered a management approach to environmental hazards — combining emerging life sciences technology with sound business principles. His fledgling firm stayed at the industry’s forefront with his emphasis on managing the interrelationships among diverse technical, economic and social parts to an environmental problem.

Throughout his career, Mr. Weston was immersed in the in-depth analysis and interpretation of the short-term, intermediate and long-term effects of pollution abatement measures and systems; and, moreover, their technological, economic, aesthetic, sociological and political impact. Consequently, he became an acknowledged industry authority, continually sought for his input to the development and substantiation of pollution control rules and regulations at local, regional, state and federal government levels.

Mr. Weston accrued a long list of credentials and accolades for addressing the environmental threats to our global quality of life. As recently as April 2007, he was recognized as a Hall of Fame Award winner by the Chester County, Pennsylvania Economic Development Council for his social imperative.

Mr. Weston passed away on August 18, 2007.

I n 1953, the Philadelphia Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers initiated

the celebration of Engineers Week in the Delaware Valley. Over the course of the next few years, additional local PSPE chapters, along with other technical societies, became involved with the initiative. The Delaware Valley Engineers Week Committee (later Council) (DVEWC) was later formed and included representation from the regional technical/professional societies from throughout the Delaware Valley. DVEWC has organized the Engineers Week celebration in the Delaware Valley ever since.

The Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia was founded in 1877, and has had a varied history over these years. As part of several initiatives, the Club is working to re-establish the strong connection with affiliated technical and engineering societies that had existed in the past.

The History ofOver the past several years, the Council has had increasingly close ties with the Club. As a result of a number of forums and discussions on how the two organizations could better serve the engineering community, it was decided that a merger of the Council and the Club would greatly benefit both organizations and the engineering community as a whole.

In 2008 the Council and the Club merged their operations resulting in the Engineers Week organizers becoming a committee of the Club.

The goal of the Club is to become the Engineering Center for the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region. By organizing and delivering Engineers Week using the Delaware Valley Engineers Week Committee, the Club is working toward this goal by strengthening its resources and allowing Engineers Week organizers to plan strategically for improved celebrations and greater visibility.

The events are supported by area corporations, universities, individuals, and participating societies. The committee members are volunteers, several having volunteered their time for many years, supported by Club staff and consultants. We thank all the members and their employers for their support of the program.
