Sugar, Spice & Every�ing NiceSpices are well known as appetizers in the culinary art all over the world. Herbs and spices do more thansimply add flavour and colour to food. With the right amount to your cooking, they provide infinite healthbenefits. Food experts would advice you to use more spices for flavouring so that you can cut down less-healthyingredients such as salt, added sugars and unsaturated fat. Modern science is beginning to uncover the ultimatepower of herbs and spices to see why people have been using spices medicinally for thousands of years. Addingenough of the right kind of spice to your food can partially offset the negative impact of a high-fat mealaccording to a recent study. Spices can be found in many forms: fresh, paste or dried. They are generally driedand ground into powder form to make it easier for us to use when coooking. Dry spices have a longer shelf life.Here are some common spices that can be found in our local supermarket:

CinnamonOne of the oldest spice discovered over tens ofthousands of years ago used commonly in dessertssuch as doughnuts, cakes, apple pies and cinnamonbuns.

PepperLike cinnamon, pepper was also discovered aroundthe same time. Black pepper is commonly used tocure illness such as constipation, diarrhea, lungdisease and indigestion.

CuminCumin seeds are used for their distinctive aromaand flavour. It is commonly found as part of theingredient for curry powder. Cumin seeds and powder are very commonly used in Indian cooking.

GarlicGarlic bulb is wildely used around the world forits aromatic flavour as seasoning or condiment.It is commonly added to stews and broths as ithas a bacteria killing property.
