Securing Our Future

For Our NeighborsFor more than 60 years, AREVA employees have demonstrated their commitment and willingness to lend a hand to the communities where they live and work. Throughout the year, we supported activities and focused initiatives for hundreds of nonprofit organizations and educational efforts throughout North America.

Annual Directed

Giving CampaignEach year, AREVA hosts a Directed Giving Campaign that provides employees a simplified way to donate to qualified charitable organizations of their choice through payroll deductions. The month-long campaign in 2015 resulted in nearly $400,000 in contributions to organizations across North America.

Who says raising a little extra money at work can’t be fun?Throughout the campaign at our different sites, employees held activities to raise awareness and promote participation in the initiative. Fun events like doughnut feeds, silent auctions, bake sales, and presentations by local agencies made the campaign fun and educational for employees.

More Than Just Time and MoneyOur commitment to communities is more than just volunteer hours and monetary donations. Employees demonstrated a strong safety culture in our daily work activities, and this carried over to our community outreach. Our employees partnered with event organizers and community members, ensuring the safety of all involved at events by conducting safety walk-downs and pre-job briefs to identify safety hazards.

GivingThe annual Season of Giving is an initiative supported at our major sites throughout North America, focused on giving to our communities during the holiday season. Throughout December, AREVA employees worked with local organizations to give back to thier communities through service projects and provided support to several charitable causes, ensuring a better holiday for those in need.

Bikes for

TikesTeam AREVA in Richland, Wash., provided 22 helping hands to construct bikes and helmets at the annual Bikes for Tikes Workshop. The sixth annual event featured more than 600 community volunteers who assembled more than 1,500 bikes for needy children around the Mid-Columbia area.

The bikes were distributed to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots, the local Boys and Girls Club, and the Cancer Center, in addition to several other organizations.

In less than 3½ hours more than

1,500bikes were built.


National

D-Day MemorialAREVA sponsored the 71st anniversary of D-Day commemoration event that took place at the National D-Day Memorial on June 6. AREVA has supported the memorial since its opening in 2001, including the premier sponsorship of the 70th anniversary commemoration event in 2014. In 2015, AREVA hosted a community tent where employee volunteers greeted veterans, their families, and visitors from all over the country. AREVA Inc. President and CEO Gary Mignogna opened the ceremony with the invocation and laid the wreath dedicated to the D-Day Glider Pilots at the end of the program.

AREVA actively supports our veterans and their families in Central Virginia. Habitat for

HumanityMore than 20 members represented AREVA for Habitat for Humanity’s IMPACT Days in the Richland, Wash., area. The team provided more than 200 volunteer hours in October to help with three projects for the biannual event dedicated to fixing the homes of those in need in the community.

Operation

SandwichThe AREVA Charlotte chapter of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) hosted a monthly Operation Sandwich volunteer activity for employees. Over the course of nine months, employees donated their lunch hours to prepare more than 6,000 sandwiches for the Urban Ministry Center to feed the homeless in the Charlotte, N.C., area.

Richland Site Celebrates

Earth DayRichland, Wash., employees teamed up with the Tapteal Greenway and Energy Northwest for the second consecutive year to clean and enhance the hiking trails at Horn Rapids Park as part of their Earth Day celebration. A team of 24 volunteers cleared overgrowth and debris surrounding the trails as part of the event.

Day of CaringEmployees in Lynchburg, Va., put their forward-looking energy to use for seven local organizations in support of the United Way Day of Caring event for Central Virginia. Thirty-six volunteers contributed nearly 150 hours to build walkways, collect paper products, landscape, deliver meals and supplies, collect bike helmets, and much more.

Time of CrisisSome community outreach events are planned and organized for months, even years in advance. Then there are those unexpected events that require an immediate response. On several occasions in 2015, AREVA employees came to the aid of our neighbors and quickly mobilized in support of crisis situations in our communities.

South Carolina Flood Relief

In October, AREVA donated 14 diesel generators to the Aiken County, S.C., Emergency Management Division in support of the agency’s response to historic flooding that crippled the state.

The NAYGN Charlotte team also banded together with colleagues in South Carolina to help flood victims with clean-up in the Columbia/Lexington, S.C., area. Within just a few days, AREVA employees also chipped in with baby supplies and delivered them to the flood victims in need.

Richland Office Comes Together to Support Local Firefighters

Employees at the Richland site showed their generosity in a time of need, rallying together to support the firefighters and citizens impacted by the record number of summer wildfires in the state of Washington.

In just two days, employees donated supplies that filled more than half a pickup truck in addition to providing two pallets of water. The items were delivered to the Tri-Cities Food Bank, which transported the supplies to the affected firefighters and individuals in the region.

Safety is our No. 1 priority, which directly supports the health and wellness of our employees. We have several integrated programs and initiatives in place at our facilities to promote safety and encourage employees to think about health and wellness in their daily activities. Encouraging and promoting safety and wellness to our employees, at work and at home, results in improved physical health, stress management, and work-life balance.

Wellness at WorkOur people are our most valuable asset, and we are committed to ensuring they return home the same way they arrived — safe and injury-free. We foster a culture of continuous improvement to prevent work-

related injuries. Through our Good Catch program, we encourage our employees to observe activities, identify potential safety and quality issues, and take corrective action before they become problems. This observation program is an essential component of our safety culture that engages employees in proactive behavior. In 2015, employees submitted more than 4,500 observations resulting in more than 1,600 Good Catches that improved safety and productivity at our sites.

and TrainingOur Environmental, Health, Safety, and Licensing (EHS&L) team conducts periodic audits to identify and correct workplace hazards. We consistently meet and exceed government requirements and perform inspections on a regular basis at all of our sites. We ask our employees to report any injuries, accidents, near misses, and hazards in a timely manner so we can investigate and take corrective action.

Wellness in Our

CommunityAREVA extended its health and wellness initiatives into our communities by sponsoring events that promoted wellness and safety to both our employees and our neighbors. In 2015, AREVA served as the safety sponsor of community runs and walks in Charlotte, N.C., Lynchburg, Va., and Richland, Wash., and subsidized the entry fees for nearly 200 employees and families to encourage participation.

DevelopmentPart of taking care of our employees is providing opportunities for career growth. Through professional development and engagement opportunities, employees connect and cultivate relationships with colleagues and are introduced to industry leaders to enhance their skillsets.

Securing Our Future

For The Next GenerationAREVA is committed to expanding our educational outreach efforts to support the growth of the U.S. energy economy.

AREVA works to advance STEM education throughout North America. Our employees share their passion for STEM careers and the nuclear industry with local students by leading and participating in a wide range of outreach and activities. We also fund scholarship programs, fellowships, leadership development, internships, and other STEM education programs.

A significant component of our outreach is dedicated to building our future workforce and educating students about AREVA. While many students recognized the AREVA logo, they are not quite sure what we actually do. Throughout the year, we reached out to schools and universities to educate students about AREVA’s capabilities and our role in the nuclear energy industry. We hosted several guided tours at our facilities to show students how AREVA works to make nuclear energy safer and more reliable. At many of our community-sponsored events, there was a familiar clicking sound as the AREVA trivia wheel spun, challenging participants to answer questions about AREVA and nuclear energy. In a few simple spins, students and neighbors of all ages learned about nuclear energy, STEM subjects, and AREVA core businesses.

About AREVA

As we continue to think about developing the workforce of the future, education and corporate partnerships are critical. Whether our partnerships consist of work-based learning opportunities, internships, guest speakers, funding, or other areas of support, the corporate community plays a huge role in student development and building the talent pipeline. For example, volunteers from the WIN-AREVA Chapter in Lynchburg hosted nearly 40 local Girl Scouts for their second “STEM Power Day” in March. The event was held at the AREVA Solutions Center and included workshops on engineering, electricity, electromagnetism, chemistry, and teamwork.

K-12 STEM Outreach


What better way to educate students about AREVA than to show them our facilities? Students from the AREVA Summer Internship for Technology and Engineering (ASITE), the Radford University Summer Bridge Program, and the N.C. State University (NCSU) Young Investigators’ Summer Program for Nuclear Engineering participated in mentoring sessions and tours at the Technical Training Center in Lynchburg, Va., to learn more about our company, engineering and technical careers, and clean energy technology.

AREVA is helping prepare tomorrow’s engineers by making STEM education more prevalent and accessible for students in Lynchburg and surrounding communities, said George Beam, Senior Vice President of Installed Base Services at AREVA Inc. Partnerships with area schools and STEM organizations are part of the company’s commitment to STEM education and to the Lynchburg area.

Building a

Technical WorkforceConnected North is a new virtual educational and healthcare program that AREVA is proud to support. This innovative platform uses Cisco TelePresence technology to connect northern Saskatchewan students to other students around Canada. This allows them to share cultural experiences and have experts visit their classrooms virtually to discuss interesting topics. Connected North started in Nunavut a couple of years ago when schools in Iqaluit became connected to schools in Ontario. As a result of the success of the initial program in Nunavut, a national expansion is now under way.

We believe strongly in programs that encouragean interest in education and help students expand their knowledge. This technology helps do just that,said Glenn Lafleur, AREVA’s Manager, Northern Affairs, who recently attended one of the Connected North sessions in Black Lake.


Nuclear Science Week is an annual week-long celebration focusing on all aspects of nuclear science. The week provided opportunities for AREVA employees to educate our youth about nuclear energy. Our sites hosted the Project Scientist Expedition in Charlotte, N.C., and events at Delta High School in Richland, Wash., and at the children’s museum Amazement Square in Lynchburg, Va. Employees were also out in the community teaching students about manufacturing. At one event, employees even helped students build their own nuclear reactors out of candy.

The Celebration 5K for Girls on the Run of Central Virginia was held in May where more than 450 Girls on the Run members, joined by their coaches, family, and friends, raced through the hills of the Sweet Briar College campus. The WIN-AREVA Chapter used this event to engage and educate the girls about nuclear energy while promoting health and wellness.

In addition to a Nuclear Science Week activity, AREVA showed its commitment to Charlotte Engineering Early College (CEEC) with a contribution of more than $7,500 to purchase laptop computers. The laptops supported teachers in their efforts to introduce students to nuclear science and engineering and to enhance STEM education with a focus on the energy industry. CEEC, which opened in 2014, focuses on energy and sustainability in engineering fields.

Science and technology fairs in our communities give us a glimpse into students’ interests and what they are working on in their classrooms. Throughout the year, AREVA sponsored several science fairs, and our employees volunteered to judge at some of these events.

In Lynchburg, Va., AREVA served as the grand corporate sponsor of the Central Virginia Regional Science Fair in March. At our office in Fort Worth, Texas, the NAYGN chapter judged an elementary school science fair for third-graders through sixth-graders in May. The support of science fairs demonstrated our ongoing commitment to STEM education outreach and gave us a peek at the next generation of leaders.

AREVA’s educational outreach extended past K-12 education and into colleges and universities across North America. AREVA fostered partnerships with several universities to establish relationships and develop a pipeline helping build our future workforce. We worked with the academic community to promote awareness of AREVA through scholarships, fellowships, senior design projects, internships, and co-ops.

AREVA worked directly with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) Leadership Academy to help prepare students for careers as professional engineers. AREVA led the students in a crucial conversations course and provided internship opportunities. This investment in UNCC resulted in early career job candidates who already embrace AREVA’s culture of Operational Excellence and know what it takes to be a successful AREVA employee.

We are a proponent of lifelong learning for our employees, and we provide opportunities for professional development throughout the year. We also like to share the lifelong learning approach with members of our communities. AREVA sponsored, and in some cases, led professional development events for employees and for the broader community.

In July, the Charlotte office hosted 50 Charlotte-Mecklenburg teachers as one of the sites for the STEMersion 2015 program. STEMersion is an annual professional development program for Charlotte-Mecklenburg middle and high school teachers representing 33 different schools. The two-week program was highlighted with visits by the teachers to some of Charlotte’s top STEM businesses.

The STEMersion program recognizes the importance of supporting teachers’ understanding of how STEM competencies translate from the classroom into real-world applications and careers. During the half-day visit to AREVA, teachers learned about AREVA’s capabilities and future workforce needs from company leaders.
