Venlo/FLORIADELORIADEIn 2012, Venlo is the host city forFLORIADE, Europe’s largest globalhorticultural exposition. Held only onceevery 10 years, this dazzling internationalshowcase features flora from aroundthe world, never-seen-before sustainablearchitecture and exquisite floral andplant displays.

Antwerp, BelgiumAntwerp preserves its Flemish cultureand charm in its Old Town. A labyrinthof squares and narrow passages leadinto the spectacular Grote Markt, where beautifully preserved guildhallsonce bustled with Antwerp’s 17th-centurymerchants and tradesmen. It is also arepository of the 17th-century Baroquemasterpieces of the city’s native son,Peter Paul Rubens. See Rubens’masterpieces, Resurrection andAssumption, in the Cathedral of Our Lady, the pride of Belgium with its remarkable47-bell carillon and soaring 404-foot,delicately ornamented spire.

BrugesFrom the Market Square to the Chapel ofthe Holy Blood, Bruges exudes the timelessatmosphere of Europe on the eve ofthe Renaissance. This UNESCO WorldHeritage site is one of the best-preservedmedieval towns in Europe, built arounda double ring of picturesque canalsand connected by charming archedfoot bridges. The magnificent façadesof opulent cathedrals and deftly craftedstone guildhalls, where merchantsconducted business, stand as remindersof the incredible wealth and power

Bruges once possessed. See Bruges’treasured architecture, virtually untouchedsince the 15th century, from the verybest perspective—aboard your privatecanal cruise.

WillemstadThe fortified town of Willemstad retainsan aura of the 16th century in its timelessharbor, green polder landscape and thewell-preserved ramparts and bastionsestablished by William of Orange, for whom the town was renamed.

KinderdijkDesignated a national monument and aUNESCO World Heritage site, Holland’sgreatest concentration of old windmillsprovides an opportunity to see firsthandthe internal workings of an authenticwindmill. Little has changed here sincethe mid-18th century, when 19 tall, wooden windmills were erected side by sideat Kinderdijk to drain the Alblasserwaard, one of many regions in The Netherlandsbelow sea level. Though no longer usedto monitor water levels, the windmills arestill one of Holland’s most picturesquesights and represent examples of theexceptionally advanced achievements of18th-century Dutch engineering.

AalsmeerSince the 17th century, flowers have beena major Dutch industry. Visit the AalsmeerDaily Flower Auction, the world’s largest, where the international market pricesfor flowers and plants are determinedeach day. Almost 19 million flowersare sold to distributors each day in theworld’s third largest building (10.6 millionsquare feet).
