DA Program Overview

Program of Study

Fall Entry Prerequisites typically take 1-2 terms to complete. Students can apply without any course work but will receive application points for each recommended course listed.

Fall Entry courses – accepted students need to be sure that all courses and steps required to start the program are done.

Year 1 – Accepted students complete 1st year core theory and clinical practice courses. See Catalog information.

Additional Information

Program and career overview is provided at the Health Professions website.

The Dental Assisting Program is accredited by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

All credits from the nine month program can be applied to an Associates of General Studies degree in the 2-year option here at Lane.  Many of the AGS degree credits can then be applied to a Bachelors degree at most Oregon 4-year colleges and universities.

Ninety five to one hundred percent of graduates find employment in the Eugene/Springfield area.

Application InformationInformation for the DA program can be found at

https://www.lanecc.edu/hp/dental/dental-assisting. Select the Dental Assisting link and then the “Application” link.

Program requirements are subject to change each year.

Application typically opens mid Winter term and closes mid Spring term for the following Fall entry. A second period may open in May if the program does not fill.

Enrollment is limited to 30 Oregon residents per year.

Acceptance decisions are based on application points and successful completion of all application steps.

Preparing to Apply.Be admitted to Lane as a Credit Student with an assigned L

number. Be an Oregon Resident within 90 days prior to date of application. Be on track to complete a High School Diploma or GED prior to Fall Entry.

Review all application materials and complete all Dental Assisting application steps.

Complete as many of the following courses as possible for application points – *MTH 052 or higher, *Human Relations course,* WR 115 or higher, *CIS 101 or CS 120, DA 110 (BI 231,232 or HO 150,HO 152), DA 103, HO 100 and EL 115 or 115R or 115H

*Courses required for Fall Entry.

Courses completed at other institutions must be considered equivalent or substituted with an approved course.

Additional points can be earned for Dental Office work experience or completion of a prior degree Associate level or higher

Math Program Requirement

The program requirement for DA is MTH 052 Math for Introductory Physical Science or higher

Students must demonstrate and complete MTH 052 or higher prior to Fall Entry.

MTH 052 prerequisite by placement testing into MTH 052 or completion of MTH 020 Math Renewal within one academic year.

To apply for points students may use testing into MTH 065 or higher but will be required prior to Fall entry to complete MTH 052 or higher.

• Sequence is as follows: MTH 010, MTH 020, MTH 052 or MTH 060, MTH 065 to MTH 095 – MTH 052, MTH 060, MTH 065, MTH 070, MTH 095, MTH 105, or MTH 111 can be used to meet Fall entry and program requirement.

Grading and Additional Requirements

DA 103 and DA 110 must to be passed with a grade of 75% or higher to meet the program requirement.

Points will be awarded in the application for completion of the following courses: *MTH 052 or higher, *Human Relations course,* WR 115 or higher, *CIS 101 or CS 120. * Courses required prior to Fall entry.

Courses eligible for additional application points *DA 110 (BI 231 and 232 or HO 150 and HO 152), *DA 103, HO 100 and EL 115 or EL115H or EL115R. *Courses meet program requirement.

A’s are worth more than B’s and B’s are worth more than C’s. C- or less grades not accepted.

Writing Requirement

WR 115 or WR 121: Introduction to College Writing or Introduction to Academic Writing. Required for Fall Entry Placement testing or WR 093 or WR 095 is the prerequisite for WR 115. May use WR 122 or WR 123

Students with a Bachelor’s degree or higher will be eligible for additional application points and will not be required to complete specific writing course requirement. Must submit official transcript as verification.

Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

Specific Courses that Expire

For Fall 2014 or later…Health Science options. Complete within 5 years prior to Fall entry.

•DA 110 – will not be offered starting Summer term 2014

•BI 231 and BI 232. Prerequisite is BI 112/CH112. CH 112 prerequisite is MTH 052 or testing into MTH 065 or higher.

•HO 150 and HO 152

• Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the

application.

Medical Terminology

HO 100 Medical Terminology or equivalent course

HO 100 is recommend prior to taking DA 110, HO 150 or BI 231

Course options are traditional in-person, tele-course (on cable TV) and Online.

• Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

Health Science options

DA 110 Health Sciences – Students who have taken BI 231 and BI 232 or HO 150 and HO 152 will not be required to take DA 110. DA 110 needs a grade of 75% or better to meet program requirement. DA 110 can be completed and used for application points prior to Fall entry. This course is typically offered every Fall term for accepted students but can be taken with Health Professions Department consent

DA 110 does not have any prerequisites. Medical Terminology HO 100 is a recommended corequisite or prerequisite.

DA 103 – Dentistry, Law and Ethics – Needs grade of 75% or better to meet program requirement. This course is typically offered every Spring term for accepted students but can be taken with Health Professions Department consent

Students need to select one 3 credits or more course option to meet the program requirement.

Application Process

• Couse work completed Winter term and before will be eligible for use in the application for points.

• Application deadline is typically mid Spring term.

• Class size for entry is typically 30 students.

• Candidates are selected from the submitted applications based on a points earned from coursework, work experience and prior degrees.

Fall Entry Requirements

• Attend Mandatory Orientation for accepted and alternate students

• Complete Fall Entry courses – MTH 052 or higher, WR 115 or WR 121, CIS 101 or CS 120, and a Human Relations Course

• Obtain required immunizations, physical and back ground check and CPR– as instructed in orientation above.

• Submit proof of High School Diploma or GED.
