By the Postgraduate Dental Dean

Foreword

Dear Colleague,

I hope this Calendar finds you well and you have had a healthy &

prosperous start to the new year. The team at NIMDTA have been

busy putting together another calendar which you can begin

browsing through and planning your educational programme for the Spring / Summer months.

Please remember we organise courses for all the dental team, including nurses who are

undertaking training and practice managers so please encourage your entire team to have a look

at the calendar. The programme would not be such a success without your ideas and valuable

feedback after courses and the team would like to thank you for your input.

I look forward to seeing you all soon at NIMDTA educational events. Your support is very much

appreciated by every team member here at NIMDTA.

Kind Regards,

Probing Stress in Dentistry

Following on from good foundations laid down by NIMDTA and HSCB, a working group, Probing Stress in

Dentistry, has been formed by the BDA and supported by the BDA Benevolent Fund, PHA, NIMDTA, HSCB

and the Indemnity Organisations. Its remit is to continue the work of raising awareness of stress in the

dental workplace and to inform and coordinate the various courses and resources available to the dental

community. The group have identified the following resources open to members of the dental team.

The HSCB & Public Health Agency has agreed to mailshot all dental practices in NI the “Take 5”

resources as a promotion of 5 ways to good mental health. Please place in your workplace and use

the poster in a visible way.

SafeTALK is a training that has been available within the NIMDTA dental calendar for some years

and has been well attended. SafeTALK helps participants become alert to suicide. Suicide-alert

people are better prepared to connect people with thoughts of suicide with life-affirming help. This

course is open to all members of the dental team.

Mental Health First Aiders Course. This is a two-day course provided by the HSC Trusts. Two

places on each course have been secured for registered dentists to attend. The course will be

available in the new NIMDTA postgraduate calendar.

A Mental Health First Aid course will help participants recognise the symptoms of some of the common

mental health problems, enable them to provide initial help to someone with a developing mental health

problem or in a mental health crisis and guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

Please note all the courses will be recognised for CPD and postgraduate allowance.

The “Probing Stress in Dentistry” group is currently investigating further courses and development of the

process, including the essential on-going support for identified mental health first-aiders in the dental

community.

NIMDTA is proud to support the valuable work of this group and the dental team are hopeful that you

can all find an event to attend.
