Changes in our behind-the-scenes team

We would love to hear your thoughts on howto make the magazine even better. Email me

at [email protected].

gpn owners on O'ahu written by our seniorwriter Loren Moreno (page 4O), I admirethe design work of Kristin and Maria. AndStephen's work is felt throughout the ads,Iending sleek, approachable flair. And Iknow it was Gary's photo inspiration tothrow roses at the feet ofSarah Richards, retiring after nearly 25 years with Hawai'iTheatre. And that David captured thatmoment. And Delo shot everything fromfire dancers to local swimsuits.

Now that you've met the people behindthe art, you've got a bit ofan insider's viewof our job. Thank you for letting us showyou their stuff

Ar-tandSoulHE TEAMuIHO BRINGS YOUHONOLULUMagazine ismade up of a mix of people withdifferent roles and responsi-bilities. Readers get to know

the names of the writers and editors moreeasily, since we're more often out in thecommunity, calling people for interviews, and because we attachour names toour stories.

Butlots ofworkgoes into ourmag-azine in many departments, including adynamic sales staff, innovative marketingarrd event specia, lists, and ahard-workingcirculation staf. On the editorial team, our closest counterparts belong to the de-sign team, the art directors who create thelook and feel of our magazine. Theyworkclosely with photographers, illustratorsand those of us who write the stories. They bring the words to life, create con-cepts, lay out the pages, arrange to shootphotos and work in many ways to makeour magazine what it is. And better.

The magazine you hold in your handin print or are readingonscreen requiresthe creativity and coordination of manypeople. They include the talented, creativearrd experienced Kristin Lipman, who hasworked at HONOLULUbefore andwe arehappy to report returned this year to serveas our senior art director. Kristin's cheer-ful expertise is feltthroughout our issueas she oversees a new team that cametogetherjust a few months ago, that is alsograppling with new responsibilities.

That team comprises: art directorsAngelica Rabang, who melds creativeskills and a flair for inventive design withan eye for detail; and Stephen Guzman, who often comes up with innovative andinspired ideas for our special sectionsand ads. Associate art director Gary Saitobrings an easygoing manner to the cra"ft ofgraphic design, and intern Maria Lieberprovides elegant design while volunteer-ing for the next task.

We also receive creative support andenerebr from our bigger creative team ofPacifi cBasin Communications, which

includes chief photographer DavidCroxford and associate photographer/advertising art director Odeeio Dayondon

Andwe are fortunate to also belongtothe still bigger circle of the aio family ofcompanies, which supports us in a hostofways.

We count on our co-workers to helpus daily when work and life get harried, when it feels like there are not enoughhours in the day or week to accomplishwhat we need to do. And that's part ofwhywe rely so much on the people who ma,keup ourream.

I d like to thanl< them a,ll.

When I read our magazine and look atour cover, I appreciate Kristin's creativedesign and the carefi.rl planningthat goesinto something that looks deceptivelysimple when it sits on the newstand. When I savor all the fun and tasteful findsofiest of Honolulu (p 48), I knowXristin and Angie collaborated to producej an evocative design that keeps pullingyou through the piece.
