USF DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS

FROM THE CHAIR

July might bring the lazy days of summer for most folks, but at USF Peds, July brings energy and excitement and fresh new faces. We just completed orientation for 20 interns: 15 Pediatrics and 5 Med-Peds. Our new chief residents, Sara Saporta, MD and Marcia Ramsey, MD and the whole education team have been very busy with schedules and trainings, making sure everyone gets to the right place at the right time. For our new trainees it is such an exciting time, and for all of us at USF Peds it provides a reminder about why we do what we do. The start of a new academic year brings promise and renewed commitment to our vocation.

In my introduction to the interns, I encouraged them to concentrate on the years ahead and strive for excellence. We discussed the following: 1. Immersing in the training

experience and in the learning of pediatrics.

2. Integrating with colleagues — sharing, learning together and supporting each other.

DEPARTMENT KUDOS

Drs. Larry Dishaw, Hana Niebur and Catherine Kubiak were awarded $75,000 by the ACH/JHM Foundation Research Awards Program for their proposal titled The Microbiome and Metatranscriptome in Chronic Rhinosinusitis and Humoral Immunodeficiency. Co-investigators include Drs. Panida Sriaroon and Donna Eason. Dr. Panida Sriaroon’s application for Fellowship in the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology was approved at its June meeting. Dr. Sriaroon is also a Fellow with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Dr. Adam Lewin was elected to the executive board for the Society for Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology - Member at Large for Education and Standards - for a 2 year term. The Society is the division of the American Psychological Association focused on youth. Carla Duff, CPNP-PC, MSN, CCRP, now holds the Ig Certified Nurse professional credential. This is the only professional credential that validates knowledge, clinical expertise and practice skills of nurses who treat patients with Ig therapy. Monica Wu, doctoral student with Drs. Eric Storch, Tanya Murphy and Adam Lewin, received a prestigious $1000 Travel Award to cover expenses to attend the International OCD Foundation Conference in Los Angeles. Her poster is titled Assessing Clinically Significant Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders. John Landi, BSW, MBA, Program Coordinator for USF/Bay Area Early Steps, was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Department of Occupational Therapy at NOVA Southeastern University for his involvement in the fieldwork placement of their class of 2015 occupational therapy doctoral students.

Kudos continued from page 1 Letter continued from page 1 3. Investigating opportunities —

there are so many opportunities within the department and in the broader university and community. We discussed taking advantage of medicine and research as team sports.

4. Intellectual Curiosity — cultivating curiosity in every aspect of work, do not accept “that’s the way we always do it” as an answer.

5. Integrity — above all, I encouraged the group to work with integrity and honesty. We all make mistakes and drop balls along the way: taking ownership of mistakes contributes to a high functioning environment.

I think these are lessons for all of us to keep in mind and that should inspire us to do better. The intern year can be very stressful with many new challenges and difficult learning situations. Resiliency is a key attribute in medicine and work life in general; it is worth cultivating. Part of being resilient includes nurturing curiosity and trying new things. Staying connected with others and learning to respond and not react like a victim are also key ingredients. I hope that we can set examples for our new trainees promoting resilience, integrity and intellectual curiosity in all aspects of our work.

FOCUS ON FACULTY

July 1st marks the 20th year for Dr. Terri Ashmeade at USF. She started her pediatric residency at USF in July 1994, completed her neonatology fellowship in 2000, and in 2009 earned her MS in medical sciences, with a concentration in patient-oriented research, through USF’s NIH-funded K30 program. Dr. Ashmeade has been Medical Director of the

TGH NICU since 2003, Chief of Pediatrics at TGH since 2010, and was recently named by Dr. Emmanuel to hold the John and Aliese Price Chair in Pediatrics. Her research interests have focused on the immune benefits of human milk, and its role in development and disease prevention in preterm infants. She and Dr. Maureen Groer from the USF College of Nursing have collaborated on several projects, including a $250,000 federally-funded project that investigated immune and growth factors in banked human donor milk for preterm infants; they have a provisional patent on immune and growth factors in donor human milk. Their work has been published and presented widely at national meetings. Dr. Ashmeade was also a research mentor for neonatal fellow Thao Ho, for her study that investigated the effects of red blood cell transfusions on intestinal inflammation in preterm infants. The study was funded by a $20,000 grant from the Gerber Foundation and was presented at PAS this year.

During her career, Dr. Ashmeade developed a keen interest in quality improvement (QI) for her patients, and has worked diligently to improve clinical outcomes in the NICU. She has completed extensive formal training in QI, including the Jefferson School of Population Health’s Patient Safety Certificate Program in 2010, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Patient Safety Executive Development Program in 2010, the Healthcare Quality Certification Commission’s Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality program in 2012, and she became a TeamStepps Master Trainer in 2014. As a result of her extensive training and experience in QI she was appointed the USF College of Medicine’s Medical Director for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in 2013. She is conducting ongoing research in QI, with a manuscript in press that describes her team’s “golden hour” approach to improving care in the critical first hour after delivery of preterm infants; this approach to care has improved clinical outcomes for these vulnerable infants. Her other important QI initiative has been to increase the use of breast milk in the NICU, which has significantly decreased the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis – a deadly bowel disease of preterm infants. Last month, Dr. Emmanuel appointed Dr. Ashmeade as the new Vice Chair for Business and Quality Initiatives for USF Peds. She will help the department adapt to changes in healthcare that require increased quality and efficiency of care by establishing operational priorities and developing and implementing solutions to challenges. She will help USF Peds become more competitive by setting strategic and business priorities and developing and implementing new clinical programs. She will also identify division-specific benchmarks to develop robust departmental QI and patient safety programs that span clinical care, teaching and research.
