    T he Contra Costa County Department of Child Support Services offers excellent career opportunities to individuals interested in the fi eld of child support collections services.

    DutiesChild Support Specialists perform a variety of functions necessary in child support collection, including contacts to custodial and non custodial parents by either telephone, correspondence or in person. They may interview, locate absent parents, establish and enforce support orders, collect support, and monitor fi nancial and case records.

    TrainingChild Support Specialists receive on-the-job classroom instruction from professional trainers to learn the proper techniques and processes used in child support collection activities. Supportive team environments and access to an up-to-date resource library assure educated decisions and actions.

    The entry/trainee level Child Support Specialist (CSS I) may qualify for promotion to the Journey Level (CSS II) after successful completion of 18 months of on the job experience. Candidates are eligible to promote to the Senior Level (CSS III) after successful completion of 2 ½ years of Child Support casework. Additional opportunities for advancement exist through promotion to the Child Support Supervisor and Child Support Manager job classifi cations.

    Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school profi ciency certifi cate

    Experience: One year of full-time or its equivalent experience (1) in a responsible public contact position requiring interviewing or the exchange of detailed verbal information as a primary element of work performed, OR (2) clerical experience in a Child Support Offi ce

    Substitution for Experience: Successful completion of at least 60 semester or 90 quarter units of coursework from an accredited college or university which include at least one three semester unit or four quarter units transferable to an accredited four year college or university in each of the following: (1) English Composition or Communications, and (2) Business or Finance may be substituted for the required experience.
