Year 11 Life Readiness Camp

Last Wednesday to Friday all Year 11 students participated in the Life Readiness Camp at

Sydney Academy of Sports in Narrabeen. Students enjoyed a variety of team building activi-

ties from kayaking blind folded to negotiating obstacle courses in order to develop their prob-

lem-solving skills and learn to cooperate and trust each other. They also engaged in discus-

sions about healthy relationships and sexual health. The greater proportion of activities were

focused on building social skills required for successful interactions in life: how do we relate to

acquaintances in our secondary and tertiary learning environments, our workplaces and the

community on a daily basis? How do we relate to ourselves? Year 11 are now striving to en-

courage each other through their final eighteen months at school, to build the relationships

that can support them once they enter the world. On Thursday night the dining room was

beautifully decorated, thanks to the generosity of the Hudson family, for the evening’s

formal dance. Students sharpened up in their suits and dresses to enjoy the night’s festivities.

Thank you to Ms Regan and Ms Paterson for their organisation of the camp and all the

teachers that supported the event. See more photos later in the newsletter.

Year 11 2022 Subject Selection tasters and evening

On Monday Year 10 students moved across different faculties to hear about the many subjects that they can

choose from for Year 11 in 2022. The Head Teachers from each subject highlighted the nuances and expectations

of their courses whilst students considered their options. This was followed up by a parent information evening on

Tuesday where staff and students detailed patterns of study for the HSC. It was wonderful to see our hall filled with

over 200 parents and students, as this was the first event with parents since the COVID restrictions. All Year

10 parents and students have been emailed the slides and information from the evening. This will allow them to

review, reflect and ask questions of the Head Teachers before subject selections.

Year 10 Student Subject coaching

Many teachers have volunteered their time to coach Year 10 students in making a more informed choice in their

Year 11 courses for 2022. All students were scheduled to discuss their pattern of study, consider alternative courses

and assess their suitability to particular subjects based on ability and skill level. Students must continue to apply

themselves diligently in semester 2 of Year 10 to increase their opportunity to access some courses, especially in

Advanced Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as these require prerequisites. Students will be choosing their sub-

jects from Wednesday June 9 up until Friday June 11 at 4 pm.

Year 7 English Close Study of Drama monologue performances

In English, Year 7 students are taking on the perspective of a character from the plays that they have been studying

in class: A Midsummer Night’s Dream or Frankenstein. They have scripted a monologue about a significant event in

the play and are dressing up to get into character and engage the audience. So far, I have been entertained and

impressed by the quality and bravado of my year 7s dramatic monologues. They are all having a great time perform-

ing for their peers!

The Writing Centre – Six years strong and just getting better

It’s been a while since I’ve attended the Writing Centre to offer a helping hand, and on Tuesday morning, I joined Ms

Abraham to support our senior students. Most students were focusing on getting assistance on their assessment

tasks; however, I sat with a table of keen Year 10 students and we discussed the nuances of discursive writing. Stu-

dents expressed that they want to attend more targeted workshops on writing and are grateful for the assistance

they get. I look forward to my next visit and thank Ms Abraham for her time, dedication and care for the students.

Multicultural Day – a call for exotic food – next Friday!

On Friday June 11 SIHS will be celebrating the diversity of our nation with our Multicultural Day. Students thoroughly

enjoy creating colourful rooms that celebrate and educate others about their cultural background. However, the big-

gest drawcard is definitely the food!

We are encouraging parents to send a dish of food on this day that can be easily served in plastic containers for stu-dents to purchase. Some examples are: a tray of empanadas, falafels or cupcakes amongst many other delicious dishes. All money raised for Multicultural Day funds the fun day. Hosting the NSDC meeting Last Monday evening we had the pleasure of hosting the quarterly meeting of the NSDC (Northern Sydney District Council of P&C Associations), their first “live” meeting since 2019. The guest speakers were Paul Martin, CEO of NESA, who updated us on the NSW Curriculum Review and NAPLAN, and Cathy Brennan, Executive Director, School Performance - Metro North, providing the latest information from the Department of Education. Keith Oliver (SIHS) & Mark Hunyor (North Sydney Demonstration School) provided a brief background on the Inclusive Educa-tion initiatives. Other speakers included our P&C President Libby Cameron, and David Hope (NSDC President).

The meeting was preceded by a tour of our amazing new world-class Sports Facility, conducted by Mark Watson, joined by our local State MP and Speaker of the House, Jonathan O’Dea, who has lobbied tirelessly for many years in support of the schools in his area. A great evening, with lots of lively networking and discussions. Keith Oliver, NSDC VP, has represented our school on the District Council since 2009.

Bus Campaign Thank you to former parent Liz Paul and her team for their tireless hours of effort campaigning for extra bus services for our students. The additional services they have been able to achieve this term have been greatly appreciated by students. As you would be aware, the team are running a campaign survey to improve services further. We would encourage all families who have not yet participated in the survey to do so. Your support will help the campaign for more frequent 582 bus services and an extension of bus route 591. Please see the campaign flyer following.

Congratulations Congratulations to Sean M, Year 12, who was awarded the Peter Lubrano and Annette Fordham Rescue Meritorious Medal for Bravery at the Mona Vale SLSC Annual presentations for an epic rescue earlier this year. The rescue was in March, Sean had just passed his IRB driving test and was involved in a rescue of a surfer whose leg rope snapped and was in distress in huge seas.

Best wishes

Are you a senior who wants a bus that gets you to Period 0 and Period 6 classes?

Missing out on extracurricular activities because there is no bus service to get you there and back?

Fed up with overcrowded buses?

ONLY 5 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME TO HELP GET THE SERVICES YOU NEED

Campaign for better 591 and 582 bus services to St Ives High School Precinct

There are not enough buses to meet demand. Services that run from 7 am through to the afternoon bell and

beyond are desperately needed.

We are asking:

o That the public bus route 591 (Hornsby to St Ives Shops via Waitara), currently

terminating at St Ives Village, be extended to include a ‘St Ives High Yarrabung

Road loop’

o For more frequent 582 bus services between Yarrabung Road and Gordon

Station.

Poor transport connections and the lack of frequent and reliable bus services to and from major

hubs, such as Gordon Station, St Ives Shops and Hornsby, force families to drive, fuelling

traffic congestion and creating pedestrian safety issues.

We need you to help us lobby for bus services that mean fair and equal access to education for ALL students.

Help us stay ahead of the game with your traffic, transport or pedestrian safety issues

Our community also needs to monitor how transport services are performing to let our

service providers know about any issues as they happen.

Use our St Ives High & Primary Traffic and Transport Facebook group as a quick and

easy way to report any issues to do with transport, traffic, or road safety around the St

Ives Schools Precinct. We will regularly monitor posts to this group and follow them up

as necessary.

SWANS SHIELD U15’s AFL KNOCKOUT GALA DAY – 2nd

June 2021 What an amazing winters day to be attending the Swans Shield U15’s AFL Knockout Gala Day. The sun was shin-ing and an amazing group of U15’s boys made the trip up to Ern Holmes Oval, Pennant Hills to play AFL. Some of them were to play their first match ever. The St Ives team were ably assisted by Angus L coach, Ben H and Spen-cer M – runners, Zac B and Scott L – runners/water. Jimmy E and Cameron H were assisting to help complete a sport coaching cluster task. Each of the boys in their three games had stand out moments. Some are as follows: Man of the Match in the first game against Asquith boys was first timer Cooper W who proved the X-factor with speed, determination, and a great kick; other first game players were Matt J, who received tackle of the game; Billy S who was excellent in the centre and Luke B who was brilliant in defense saving many potential scores. Toby L, a very experienced, state player was fabulous in the ruck. The boys won this game 11-7. St Ives played Killara in the second match and were beaten in golden point extra time. Congratulations to Michael M 2x goals, Cooper W 1X goal and Zac L who also scored a goal. A lack of match fitness, an injury to Cooper W and lack of player experience contributed largely to the loss; however, this was a great learning curve for our young team. Billy S, Luke B, Nate R and Felix M all shared player of the match. Unfortunately, this close loss meant the team was relegated to a non-progressive game against Marsden High School. In the final game, a switch flipped and combined with extrinsic motivation (a trophy and bag of snakes) the team made a much-improved effort to easily win their final game. The ball flew out of the ruck courtesy of Toby L and the goal onslaught began. Multiple goal scorers were Toby L who finished with 3 goals, 2 behinds, and Nate R who kicked 2 straight. The rest of the goals were shared between 6 other players. The final score was victory to St Ives High 11 goals, 8 behinds – 74 to Marsden’s 1 goal – 6. Mark of the day went to Toby L, quote of the day to Matt J who could be heard calling out “just let me score, I was open!”, and Player of the day to Toby L. Again, many thanks to Angus L for giving up his lunchtimes, coaching the team at school and on the day, and to the St Ives AFL club for supplying training jerseys for the boys to play in. Thanks to NSW/ACT AFL for hosting the day, all the parents for assisting with lifts and all the players who dis-played great sportsmanship and resilience throughout the day. STAGECOACH

Students from St Ives Primary School are currently undertaking Stagecoach. This program is part of the transition process for primary students entering high school. The Year 5 students experience 'high school life' by sitting in lessons conducted by teachers of St Ives High School. It is a great experience for the students, assists with their transition into high school and provides an experience outside of their normal learning environment. Over the course of three weeks, students will participate in Science, Visual Art and Language lessons. A special thank you to Mrs Crooks, Ms Zaki, Ms Furber and Mr Small for their assistance in the program. More local schools will be part taking in this program throughout the year.

LITERACY UPDATE

This year, CILSP funding has allowed for an increased number of tier 2, small group literacy interventions. We are fortunate to offer MacqLit, Quicksmart and Spelling Mastery groups during terms 2-4 and these groups are already operating with cohesion and focus. The diagnostic work the LaST completed during term 1 allows for highly target-ed interventions, focusing this year on decoding, reading comprehension as well as spelling. Breaking news: Me-gan Reymond, our Literacy Withdrawal Co-ordinator, is currently weaving the powerful strategies outlined in The Writing Revolution into both the MacqLit and Quicksmart programs. This will allow our withdrawal students access to explicit, systematic writing support to further enhance their literacy development. Over the weekend Megan and April from our Learning and Support Depart-ment attended, “High Impact Strategies for Supporting Secondary Students with Learning Difficulties”, hosted by Learning Difficulties Australia. Renea Watkins presented on providing intensive literacy support for secondary students. Renea’s talk supported the strategies we employ here at St Ives High School for our tier 2 interventions, which was lovely to see. Melanie Henry spoke about high yield oral language strategies for improving literacy and already some of these strategies are being considered for inclusion in both our Macqlit and Quicksmart small groups. Dr Sharonne Telfer spoke about behaviour management and Benjamin Saulsman gave a very engag-ing presentation about critical knowledge in place value and multiplicative thinking, concepts we hope to integrate into our tier 2 maths groups. MULTICULTURAL DAY – FRIDAY JUNE 11

TH

Dear Parents and Guardians

This year Multicultural day will take place on Friday, June the 11

th. Each year during this

day we run a food fair which showcases the foods of the various cultures we have at our school. This is the highlight of the day for the students.

In the past we have had food stalls showcasing Indian, Chinese, Korean, South African,

South American and many other cultural foods.

Without the support of the parents the food stalls will not be able to happen.

If you are interested in taking part or would like more information, please contact [email protected] or [email protected]
