MEMBER SPOTLIGHTJeffrey Yates Deputy Sheriff at SDCJ Years with Department:14 Years as a DSA Member:11

What did you do before you joined the department? I sold Recreational Vehicle parts and accessories

What drew you to law enforcement? I’ve always wanted to be in law enforcement. Detentions seemed to be a logical step to

patrol, but I enjoyed detentions enough to stay in the jails.

What was your first day on the job like? My first day on the job was a little scary. I had no idea what to expect, but my first phase T.O. at VDF quickly acclimated me to how a jail operates.

What is one thing you think the DSA should focus on in the upcoming year? I think the DSA should focus on training for its members. Training for things like parenting skills, financial security, how to maintain a healthy lifestyles, etc. These training sessions would improve the members overall wellbeing.

If you could switch places with anyone for one day, who would it be? It would have to be someone like Bill Gates. I would like to experience the feeling of being able purchase anything I want and not be concerned with the cost.

What is your dream vacation? I just took it last year. I took my family to Israel to visit family members we have never met. The feeling of visiting the holy land as well as meeting a whole new side of the family was a great experience.

The member spotlight features one Active or Retired DSA Member each month.

Local pride is on the line again this year as law enforcement officers from across San Diego prepare to enter the ring on

Saturday, June 18, as part of the eighth annual “Barona Battle of the Badges”

charity boxing event at Barona Resort & Casino.

The Barona Band of Mission Indians, the Community Youth Athletic Center

(CYAC), and the National Latino Peace Officers Association have partnered once again to host the

highly competitive event. Police officers from the San Diego Police Department, the San Diego Sheriff’s

Department, Chula Vista Police Department, Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, National City Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, and San Diego Probation Department will go head-to-head in the ring during 14 bouts scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Over the past nine years, the Barona Band of the Mission Indians and the Barona Resort & Casino have helped raise over $500,000 for the Community Youth Athletic Center. Event tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. In addition, VIP tables are also available at $400 for a table of four that includes beverages and commemorative event t-shirts. Tickets can be purchased at the Barona Resort & Casino gift shop, through CYAC by calling (619) 474-2922, or at the door the night of the event. Further Barona Battle of the Badges information is available at www.cyacyouth.org.

Undersheriff Jim Cooke and his wife paid a visit to the Search and Rescue Academy overnight final exercise on Sunday, May 15, 2011. They made the academy students a ham to share at their breakfast after two longs days of events, which included an actual search in Julian for a 63-year-old woman who went missing on Friday and was found on Saturday around 3 p.m. After the breakfast, the academy headed out on a 8-mile qualification hike with a minimum of 20 pounds in their pack, minus water. Each student had to complete it in less than 3.5 hours. It was a very long weekend. The two day exercise requires all the skills the student had learned over the past 4.5 months (225 hours) while attending the academy. Search and Rescue is comprised entirely of volunteers. - photos by Jerry Hollie

dividends in the resolve of righteous endeavor.

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. The Lord looks from heaven and sees all the sons of men; from His dwelling place He looks on all the inhabitants of earth, He Who fashions the hearts of them all, Who understands all their works. A King is not saved by a mighty army; a warrior is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory, nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who reverence Him, on those who hope for His mercy, to deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. Our heart rejoices in Him because we trust in His Holy Name. Let Thy lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in You” (Psalm 33:12-22).

Chaplain’s Cornerby Chaplain Gunnar Hanson

“I hate the life of empty vanities; but I trust in the Lord. I will rejoice and be glad in Your lovingkindness, because You have seen my affliction; You have known the troubles of my soul, and You have not given me over into the hand of the enemy; rather You have set my feet in a large place” (Psalm 31:6-8).

With the 67th anniversary of “D” Day, Memorial Day, and July 4, much comes to mind and heart about how rich, fortunate, and blessed we are as a nation and people. The heritage we live and profit by, the legacy that inspires and defines us as a people, the freedom and prosperity we thrive under, the health and well-being that gives vitality to our future and hope, the faith of our fore-fathers that built our nation’s character and sustained a sense of trust in American community, didn’t just happen. Hard-working, sacrificial, persevering, and spiritually grounded salt-of-the-earth men and women arose from humble means to form a nation and culture unparalleled for its opportunity and strength.

Since the Mayflower Compact at the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620, we’ve seen 400 years of growth in liberty and justice for all. Not without its missteps and grievous errors, our faith and freedom nonetheless has enabled us to endure and learn from consequence and to build a stronger constitution from the principles used to establish this great land and people. We experience today the fruits of generational blessings and curses, and yet with the wisdom and discernment that in humility may be ascertained, we stand to become even better.

All this is true corporately, because of resolve individually to recognize our separate responsibilities for family, faith, and freedom. Such freedom and goodness does not grow out of the external control of tyranny or despotism, but from the mutual trust of a disciplined community that generates a culture of truthfulness, that of being faithful in the little things, the basic fundamental truths which translate into being faithful in much.

What has made our brand of democracy so impossible to translate into other cultures is just this aspect of individual responsibility and mutual trust. Cultures at war with themselves for millennia do not change. But something different happened here beginning in 1620, which, built on the Truth of Divine Law morally and spiritually, produced a new kind of government, of, by and for the people. It has withstood legions of test and scourge and stands vigorous to this day. It will continue to do so as long as its truths remain grounded in the regard of our Creator God Who gave us such life, liberty, and pursuit of rest. And with that liberty comes the mutual responsibility to attend the matters which keep and grow and preserve our character. What we do personally and privately affects all others, our family, friends, coworkers, and community.

This country did not happen by chance. And it has not grown without commitment and resolve to do what is right and be found faithful. We are inspired not by selfishness and egotism, but by sacrifice, humility, and a willingness to consider others as more important than self. This is what generated our identity from the beginning, and what has enabled us to survive, persevere, and emerge ever stronger and truer. We will continue to grow, but only with the faith, hope, and love from our God that governs our pride, passion, and prejudice, and which will evermore preserve us as we respect the stewardship of our trust, and reinvest its

(Rural Enforcement never sleeps!) by Matt McClendonWho Are Those Guys? We'll work our way down from north to south this month.

noRtH CoUnty DRy wAll REPAIRDeputies Alvin Vasquez and Billy Painter were handling a little family misunderstanding up in Borrego Springs. They dispo'd it "Settled by Separation" with the male half-relocated to another crash pad.

The female RP called back and the story changed to a felony DV situation. I know it's hard to believe. The good deputies headed back to 10-16 the male half and the fight was on. Now I wasn't there, so I can't tell you for sure how the guy’s head got stuck in the drywall, but it did.

Billy handled the transport to jail. The 10-16 was badmouthing that “mean deputy,” referring to Alvin. The problem was, he was so drunk that he kept referring to him as Medina. No one corrected him, of course. So now Carlos Medina has an enemy he doesn't even deserve, and that ain’t right. Oscar Escobedo did the same thing to me years ago. I know, we look a lot alike.

wHAt'S MInE IS MInE. wHAt'S yoURS IS nEGotIABlE.Ever had one of those capers where one guy perceives that the other guy owes him some money and goes about collecting the debt in his own special way? In this case, also from Borrego Springs, our subject perceived that he was owed $3,500 for his labor. The boss saw things a little different.

Mr. Suspect decided to have the boss's Road Grader, valued at $16,300, towed to a scrap yard in the next county and sold for its scrap value. After setting his plan in motion, he received payment of about $2,750. It's all pretty fuzzy math. Oh yes, and he also had to produce valid identification and even had his picture taken while standing next to the road grader before receiving payment.

Dep. Carlos Medina worked the case with some pretty tenacious old fashioned police work. He personally checked all the scrap yards in the region, even beyond our county lines. It didn't take long to hit the jackpot. During the suspect interview, our guy still denied any involvement until Carlos showed him the picture—you know, the one of him standing next to the Road Grader.

Unfortunately, the Road Grader has already been transformed into raw materials for some

new construction project, probably in a foreign land.

Moving down toward Pine Valley, the guys are working a burglary series up on Mount Laguna. I tell you this now, so I can brag about their heroics next month when they catch the bad people. I got a funny feeling...

tRAInInG In ACtIonLast month, I told you about a large scale Table Top Exercise to evaluate our wild fire response skills. It didn't take long to put those well-honed skills to work. The 11-71 Brush call came out at 6:22 p.m. The dry grass in the meadow behind Major's Coffee Shop went up in flames pretty fast. It had to have been deliberately set. Deputies David Perrapato and Gary Williams quickly developed some solid witness info and knew exactly who they were looking for and where to find the two misguided youngsters—both only 14. Skillful interviewing broke through the wall of lies.

Cal Fire worked very closely with our heroes, and this will be an interesting case to watch as it works it's way through the system.

SnIFFED oUtDep. Darren Perata and his faithful dog Tugg work Operation Stonegarden out here on a regular basis. Tugg made yet another outstanding pinch on a young lad from Imperial County transporting 66.75 pounds of cocaine into our county. These dope dogs are putting a major hurt on the narco trade. Their handlers also deserve honorable mention. Darren handled the paper and did the transport. Tugg is still leaming how to type.

Dep. Eli Curran got one of those O'Dark Thirty DV call-outs. The DV aspect waspretty solid, so Mr. Brandysnifter got hand cuffed. Too bad for him, he's also an excon/290 kind of guy with a shotgun and some live rounds in the room where he was so drunk he couldn't even pick himself up off the floor. How do these people ever post bail?

That's all the news that's fit to print this month. As ever, we're Rural Enforcement, "fightin' crime elsewhere!"

Normally by this time of year, I would be commenting on the heat we were experiencing. Well, you will not hear that from me this year. Matter of fact, there is a chance you will still find an umbrella or two on the floor of our back seat. Maybe the ozone info is correct?!

June is also the time of year when students are recognized for completing enough classes to move on to the next level of their education or obtain a degree in the field of their choice; at times being related to their career of choice. Congratulations to each of you, especially those who were selected to receive scholarships.

Your time will not be wasted if you dream of the “aha moment” that gives you peace and makes you happy. As Oprah once put it, “It’s only when you made the process your goal that the big dream can follow.”

I had the opportunity to participate in “walking” at Grossmont Community College this year. At first, I thought it would be just plain silly for me (shall we say “someone so close to retirement”) to get dressed up in a cap, gown, and tassel with so many young people with a simple associates degree after @&*$% years. I have no regrets. It was so exhilarating to be among all those people who were excited about life.

Guess what, I was not the only “Nana” there either. Everyone had a different story as to how they got to that day and where they would be going tomorrow, but they were all excited to be there. I would encourage any of you with those loose, “just sitting there” credits to ponder the thought of putting them to work for you in the form of a degree.

Speaking of using your mind, we work (well)

with a 120-day rehire that does that a lot. Matter of fact, it was because of him that we had some legitimate brain teasers during morning line ups to get our circulation pumping for the day. It is amazing how much information one person can know—a little bit about everything. Does that make sense? I know you are wondering who I am talking about. We’ve had several deputies who have fit that description. Many of you have been supervised by him and lived to tell about it. He is a member of the holding tank crew; whether it be GF or 2M. He is a member that does not hesitate to contribute as often as possible.

One of his recent “contributions” was to enlighten the team about the animal known as the honey badger. Realizing the holding tank crews have the same indestructible perseverance of the honey badger, the team accepted it as their

mascot; its tenacity their motto. This deputy was recently honored in a special way. Once upon a time, the badge numbers were only three digits. There is a special one in particular, 295. Many tales have been told around the camp fires about events that have included the badge numbered 295. Many have listened in awe of the power of the badge numbered 295. As a true testament of how much this deputy means to the team, they dubbed the new chow cart “Nosal 295.” It is impossible to think of anyone who could ever come close to follow in your footsteps.

As far as footsteps go, we have only had one personnel exchange. Sgt. Dave Ross departed for Imperial Beach and Sgt. James Blanton came into the CSB in the field services division. Cpl. Robert Germain will have him up to snuff with our civil service procedures in no time. By the way, we want to wish Brett Germain buena suerte as he begins the path towards the Border Patrol.

I have not had the opportunity to include triumphs of athletic ability in awhile. I’m about to break that with news from one of our past own. Judge Charles Ervin competed in swimming as a retired deputy sheriff in the 2011 Police and Fire Games. He came back to town with the following awards: bronze – 100

free, silver – 50 free, gold – 100 back (including a new meet record), silver – 50 back, silver – 50 fly, and a gold for his half-mile long distance swim. That’s quite a record. Congratulations! I personally know what it feels like to have a bunch of those ribbons around my neck, but that was a loooooooooong time ago. Isn’t that right Tommy Smith?

I’m sure you are acquainted with the great Abbott and Costello skit “Who’s on first.” Well, I’ll tell you. It’s Sgt. Tina Tejeda of course. She has quite “a glove” at that number three position. She has been playing with the same softball team for about 20 years. That’s a lot of sunflower and bubble gum time!

Another subject I have not talked about for awhile is babies. One of our special professional staff members, Aileen Estacio, is going to “get” a new bundle of joy to add to her family this August. She did a good job of keeping it under wraps for as long as she could; staying seated at her desk and wearing big sweaters. It was Cpl. Robert Germain who sensed her condition way before anyone else had a clue. Guess it could be said Robert has good “preg-gar.” I’ll have photos next report. We are throwing a surprise baby shower for her. Shhhhhhh.

There is nothing like taking a good American History class to get the most out of a fireworks show on the Fourth of July. There is nothing like a war to bring a tear to your eye as you sing the Star Spangled Banner. Thank you to all our

soldiers who do what they are told, who believe they leave their families behind for a good cause, and who will always be in our hearts and prayers. Come home soon. Thank you for serving and protecting our country. Happy Birthday to the United States of America.

That’s all I’ve got for now.

Things have been steady for the K9 Unit since the last article. Sergeant McCracken says the new building is on track and should be started in the near future. Water and narcotics certifications were completed and all teams passed with no problems. Deputy Chapman and Rex completed their training and are back in San Marcos.

Deputy Serrato and numerous other deputies from the Santee station went to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. My friend Dep. Ken Collier was remembered for his sacrifice and his teammates and co-workers were there to honor him. God Bless Ken.

While there, Deputy Serrato visited the K9 Memorial. Sgt. Dan Settle and his partner Urk appear on the memorial. Urk was killed while on patrol in Vista on Jan. 13, 2003. Rest in Peace Urk.

Some of you probably saw a photograph of Deputy Serrato and K9 Hugo during training at the county pumps in Santee. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control, Hugo was returned to the vendor and Deputy Serrato has been patiently waiting for another partner. Well, let's welcome newly acquired K9 Yukon to the unit! Yukon is a 2 1/2 year old German shepherd born and trained in Czech Republic. They will be starting the academy soon.

Most of you probably know Dep. Rod Cruz from the East Mesa Detention Facility. Deputy Cruz is currently dealing with some serious medical problems. He is undergoing treatment, but keeping his spirits up, during this trying time. Rod, know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Deputy Duey and Deputy Vail recently represented the K9 Unit in the Tough Mudder

in Snow Valley. The run was 10 miles and consisted of mud, water, and other obstacles. They both finished the run and helped the Wounded Warrior Project raise funds for our country’s disabled veterans. Great job guys and an awesome way to represent the unit!

Seems the north county teams had some good calls so let's get to it.

noRtH CoUntyI n R a mona , a detec t ive who located a stolen vehicle requested patrol units. They watched the vehicle, waiting for the driver to return. When the driver returned, deputies attempted to contact him. He was able to flee the area in the car and a short pursuit began. The driver lost control, hit a fence, and ran from the vehicle. Ramona deputies set up a perimeter while Deputy Guthrie and his partner Barry made their way to the scene. They tracked the suspect, eventually losing the trail, but during the follow up investigation, they gathered information identifying the suspect, who was recently placed on probation for armed robbery.

Deputies headed to a known address for the suspect and attempted contact. One of the perimeter deputies saw the suspect running and notified Deputy Guthrie. He and Barry responded and gave K9 announcements. While tracking, they eventually went into a drainage culvert area. Barry showed extreme interest in the dense brush. The suspect had hidden in the brush and Barry was literally on top of him. As the suspect moved, Barry made contact with him. The suspect was arrested and treated for multiple injuries to his arm. Great job guys!

In Valley Center, Deputy Cruz and his partner Shark responded to a PC 245 call involving a male, a female, and a one liter bottle of Vodka. Prior to arrival, the suspect had left the area on foot and was hiding in a brushy area. While the primary deputies were investigating, the suspect returned. When ordered to stop, he refused and ran back into the brush.

D e put y Cr u z a r r i ve d a nd gave K 9 announcements. Shark was giving the tracking command and into the brush they went. They tracked for about 200 yards when the suspect saw Shark approaching and immediately gave

up. Maybe the guy heard Deputy Cruz calling Shark 's name and wondered, "Their using Sharks now!" Great job and apprehension by Deputy Cruz and Shark; sorry, just had to say his name again.

On May 21, Oceanside PD requested sheriff's K9s to assist with a murder investigation. Deputy Wisniewski, Deputy Arend, and Deputy Burke all responded with their partners. Using the shell casings as a starting point, Deputy Arend and Ado began tracking. They tracked for about three blocks before ending in the back of a residence. Deputy Burke and Simba used the same starting point and also ended up in the same backyard. Further investigation revealed the resident had seen three males running through their backyard earlier. Oceanside PD were grateful for our assistance and is handling the investigation. Great work guys.

CAnInE tIP oF tHE MontHNarcotic sniffs and article searches are requested on a regular basis. I want to remind everyone of a couple of important details. When requesting these types of assistance, please try to stay of out of the area if it is possible and safe to do so. Allow the K9 to perform his job with as little distraction as possible. Wait for the handler to complete an area and tell you where the K9 alerted before you go in and conduct a "hands on" search. If the area is large, like a house or field, the handler will check the area in quadrants and advise you where to search before moving on.

Well, that's it for this month. Take care, be safe, and remember to call for a K9.

Having a best friend is like peeing down your leg. Everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling it provides.

Barona. Just the name makes me think about slot machines and black jack tables and a poker room. Did you know crooks go there too? I’m not kidding. Just read on and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Det. Tom Smith got a call from Dep. Mike Lozano about a BOL Detective Smith had put out regarding a possible truck with a camper shell seen in several local areas where other vehicles were getting burglarized. Apparently, our burglar guy went to Barona in order to continue his cheating ways and got caught by Barona security as he was trying to break into a car in the parking lot. Deputy Lozano got the call to go handle the incident and recognized the vehicle as the one from Detective Smith’s BOL. That’s great, right? Well, it gets better.

As it goes, SDPD was making this into a publicized case, as more than 30 vehicles had

been broken into at the San Diego Zoo parking lot. The suspect is also responsible for stealing a purse out of a vehicle at the Lakeside Rodeo grounds. When Detective Smith arrived at Barona and reviewed the video, three other employees approached him and stated it was the same suspect who had broken into their cars earlier in the week.

Detective Smith recovered a van and a car load of stolen property (eight suitcases, golf clubs, and purses). While being interviewed, the suspect said he had been doing bad for over seven months and Barona was his favorite spot. He also did bad in San Diego and Las Vegas. Detectives recovered some of the stolen property from the Las Vegas thefts. Did I forget to mention our guy had a felony dope warrant? Yeah, go figure.

While being questioned, the suspect confessed to everything and shared where his partner was staying. Personally though, if I was getting grilled by Detective Smith, I’d probably tell him everything I knew too. Like the time I put

my brother’s head in the toilet bowl, flushed it, and told him he was hearing the sounds of the ocean. Come on now! We were both little, and it was kinda funny. But I digress. Detective Smith found the house and SDPD waited it out to catch the partner in crime.

This is great work by Deputy Lozano who recalled information from the BOL and shared it quickly so the suspect could be apprehended. He also interviewed and interrogated the suspect which provided further information to solve and close out several cases. Station 1 rocks!

Speaking of rockin’ and rollin’ we have more movement here at our station. A big welcome to Scott Miller who is assuming control as our patrol lieutenant. We are also getting Sergeant Marilu Marcq who took over Sergeant Taft’s old team. Finally, we are getting Sgt. Chuck Vorce who will be replacing Sergeant Joe Passalacqua. We are saying good bye to Joe who is leaving us to for the Alpine Station. Det. Jason Rouse is leaving us to go put the children of San Marcos under control, but we are getting John Turtzer to take his place.

Well, that’s it for now. Be careful out there. There’s bad people and stuff.

The Snake PitSan Diego Central Jail by Mirelle Chateigne

“A jail is much like a safe fence—it must be bull strong, horse high and hog tight...to make it safe, sound, and sane.” - Edwin M Capps.

With the “end of an era” also came the end of fishing lines dangling onto the streets from inmate windows. The end of briefcases, carried by deputies as a means of holding carbon paper, white out, blank 11-53s, face sheets, ruler, and plenty of pencils. The end of bloodied knuckles from working the clam shell. The end of stifling hot summers and frightfully cold winters. The end. We will never carry ten Folger Adam keys on our key rings again.

When I talk to people who have been on the department long enough to have worked at the “new” San Diego Central Jail (SDCJ) and the old Central Detention Facility (CDF) I hear stories of the lack of cameras, rats racing through the heater system on the catwalk, the many malfunctioning hand cranked windows, and the suffocating stench from the strip room. An aroma so strong and putrid it penetrated the floor and walls, and could be inhaled in the briefing room, 100 feet away. Those fortunate enough to have experienced what it was like to work in a “real jail” would then end up saying something like, “God how I miss working there!”

Can you picture a time when we were all more than just co-workers; when we were all family? No separation between professional

and sworn staff. No separation between L.E. and Corrections. That’s what it was like to work at the old CDF. And while there was only one radio per f loor, usually reserved for the training officers, CDF deputies seemed to be able to communicate a lot better than we do now. The lack of Twitter and text messaging made it necessary for them to actually talk to one another—face to face—imagine that. In a desperate land, where the children were all insane, there was comfort in spending half of your shift working the gate (Intake), then switching to work a housing floor so you could finish your Detox or Use of Force paper. And you always knew you were liked by your supervisor when that paper was corrected in pencil instead of red ink. There was comfort in weekly basketball games, hosted by Correctional Counselor Ricardo Marentez. Counselor Marentez would routinely invite an entire team of deputies (approximately 20 deputies in all) to come out to play basketball at his son’s school gym. I hear those games were the best!

There was danger in the fish tank, where it was common to find loaded guns, knives, bottles of booze, or a six-pack even. There was risk and uncertainty working the roof/recreation yard position where one deputy was locked in with 30 inmates and only one camera to serve as your partner. But when asked what was the scariest place to be at the old CDF, Sergeant Martinez tells me it was the inmate property room, where

inmate property was placed in brown paper bags and stacked ceiling high in no apparent order, stinking to high heaven.

Sergeant Martinez (currently assigned at EMDF) was part of the SDCJ transition team. He helped write the first set of post orders and facility green sheets for the new jail. He was also responsible for punching the first hole through the old trustee station, making way for the second floor court bridge—the only connection left between old and new.

Bull strong, horse high, and hog tight doesn’t just describe the exterior of our current facility. It also describes the will, determination, and stamina of the people I currently have the pleasure of working with. And just like at the old CDF, we are working towards being more like a family.

FRoM tHE DESK oF CoRPoRAl KoCUR AnD DEPUty CEANine deputies awoke before dawn. They put their running shoes on. They faced a diverse set of challenges and they walked on down the hall.

Event day! The sun was shining bright in a clear blue sky, and the mountains of Snow Valley loomed in the distance, as did the 24 treacherous obstacles which were to be negotiated over ten miles. Team “Psych Unit” toed the starting line. We raised our right hand to recite the Tough Mudder pledge, and then our five hour ordeal was underway! Taking an ice plunge in one of the first obstacles, we were quickly reminded we were partaking in the toughest event on the planet! Some of the near vertical mountain sides had to be climbed on our hands and knees.

Silver Star July 2011 33

The team ended up battered, bruised, burnt, bloody, and electrocuted, but we completed every obstacle and finished just as we started—together!

Before I get started, I have to thank Sergeants Andrejewski, Ortiz, and Martinez and Deputies Membrere and Delcarmen for taking me back in time, since I didn’t have the privilege of actually working at the old CDF.

Finally, I have to thank our captain and admin staff. Sometimes as deputies we feel the command staff doesn’t really care about things that only affect us deputies. A couple of months ago, we were restricted in the use of the judge’s parking lot, the only secure, free parking in downtown. Everyone knows parking at SDCJ is a pain. We were not happy about being restricted in the use of the one parking comfort. Captain Pena approved the installation of a card reader for the judge’s lot so that we could have our evening access back. In this time of budget crisis and restricted spending, the installation of a card reader was unexpected, but greatly appreciated. Thank you Captain Pena!

Now meet Deputy Snyder. Some of you might have heard of a little race we do here every June called the San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon. Not only did our very own Deputy Snyder compete in this event, but he qualified for the Boston Marathon. (Just an FYI, you have to be super fast to be able to qualify for the Boston Marathon.) But what makes Deputy Snyder super fantastic is the fact that while he could have been on his way home to have lunch as I was barely crossing the 13 mile marker, he stayed on the course and cheered me on as I approached the 23 mile marker, approximately two hours later.

Lance Armstrong: yeah, we got one of those. Deputy Gregory was just selected to become a member of the 2011 Team Aquaphor Sponsored Athlete Team. The team is comprised of 200 top-age group athletes who primarily compete in the sports of triathlon and running. Deputy Gregory was selected for this honor based on his dedication and passion for his sport, and it’s a pretty huge accomplishment for him. He participated in the San Diego Half Marathon as his first Team Aquaphor event (he would have done the full, but he had only two months to train). He’ll also be participating in the Iron Horse Classic in Durango Colorado, a cycling race where he’ll be facing a 10,000 foot climb at elevations of 6500 to 11000 feet! You’re more than welcome to join us to cheer him on when he competes locally in the Tri-Rock Triathlon Series this September.

Hopefully the strength and courage of our Tough Mudders Deputy Snyder and Deputy

Gregory—folks who never seem to lose focus and continue to persevere even in the most extreme circumstances—will radiate through the concrete walls of our jail and inspire everyone in our department to achieve glory. My favorite quote from the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon was, “You are two blisters and one lost toenail away from victory!” (In my case it was four lost toenails, but who’s counting!)

It ’s not real ly about qualify ing for the Boston Marathon, being selected for a team sponsorship, or losing toenails. It’s about getting out there and living. Setting goals and achieving them. Deputy Gregory said to me, “With will and determination I changed my life, and accomplished goals and wins I had only dreamed about!” It’s never too late to change our lives. You are never too old, too short, too fat, too whatever, to strive for greatness in the things that you do. Whether it’s running a full marathon, a 5K, or simply being the best parent or friend that you can possibly be.

Sergeant Walzer and I invite everyone to participate in the Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon with us; we already have a few takers from Las Colinas! The event takes place the first week in December (Teams 3 and 4 weekend off). We’re doing this one for fun, a nice way to end out the year. The event is a little pricey (they are closing down the entire strip), but it’s also a night time race, so there’s no worries about overheating or electrocution. The event is expecting to sell out, and gets more expensive the closer we get to race day, so if you are interested in participating you should register as soon as possible.

If you’re not interested in participating, but would like to be our cheerleaders, we would love to have you! Training starts in September. You can e-mail me and I’ll put you on my training list!

‘Til next time, stay hungry!

The Southwest CornerImperial Beach by Omri Goren

I know, it’s been a while. I’ve had a few people ask me what happened to the “Southwest Corner” and I realized many months have gone by without an article. It’s time to catch you all up, so let me get right to it since I only have 900 words to do it in.

First, some hellos and goodbyes; Lt. Scott Ybarrondo left us for BCST. It was awesome having Scott around, but BCST is a great spot to be in. They replaced Scott with Lt. Marco Garmo. What can I say, someone’s watching over us since we keep getting lucky with great command staff. They also filled two patrol sergeant openings with Dave Ross and Fran Passalacqua. Both have a bit of a drive all the way over to our corner, especially Dave, but we’re happy to have them.

I also need to welcome two deputies to our station. Jacob Booher came from CVPD (he got tired of those pink slips) and Doug Morse came to us from South Bay Court. They’re both squared away and will be done with their training soon. Oh yeah, and one of our clerks, Gabby Kullman, left us for WTU. Have fun over there Gabby.

Now for some congratulations. Sgt. Carlos Jacobo finally retired! Can you believe it? It’s true, after 30 million years in I.B., he finally pulled the plug. We wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life.

Det. Chuck Vorce left us for Ramona, but just as he finished arranging his cubicle he got promoted to sergeant. Congrats Chuck! Marilu Marcq left an opening in the Gang Unit when she got promoted to sergeant. Congrats Marilu! Congratulations are also in order for Manny

H e r e d i a , C h r i s M a n o o k i a n , a n d Z h e a t h S a n c h e z . Manny got the COPPS spot, Z got promoted to detective and went to DIU, and Manook got the T.O. spot, again (round 2, ding). Sgt. Ted Greenawald is now running the Traffic and COPPS units, and Miles Ting is the station’s admin sergeant.

I think I covered all t he t ransfers and promotions, so let’s move on to the war stories.

It was a nice quiet day in Bonita when Jose Arvizu and Omar Vega got an assist CPS call. Most of those CPS calls are fairly mundane. We just provide them security while they snatch the kids away (I haven’t been to one where the snatching wasn’t warranted). This time around, though, was different.

After Omar knocked on the door, he heard the door being locked and then silence. It’s funny, people think they can pretend to not be home after they made it obvious they are. Needless to say, Omar didn’t appreciate the hospitality he was shown, so he snooped around the house. Let’s just say he found some tale-tale signs that the house probably contained a lot of marijuana. To the rescue came Steve Reed (the marijuana guru) and the BCST team.

what started out as a CPS assist turned into a garage full of marijuana.

It took some time for Steve to get the search warrant, so Omar and Jose had to sit, and sit, and sit, and sit, and sit, and sit... And sit they did without food or water. And did our determined deputies complain? Not even once. In fact, by the time I got there with Doug Morse (my trainee at the time), they had already been sitting for about six hours. We got there just in time to watch BCST make entry into the home (which was very cool).

In the end, 120 marijuana plants and $100,000 in growing equipment were confiscated. I can only wonder what our happy couple was doing for over six hours locked up in the house watching Omar and Jose watching them. Oh wait, they’re on drugs, sitting around trying to figure out where the water goes after you flush is a party to them. Nice catch, fellas! The picture gives you an idea what the inside of the garage looked like.

Steven Sepulveda has either honed his dirt bag detection skills or he’s getting very lucky lately. A little while back, Steven stopped a car for the usual chickenfeed violation (either no license plate lights or no front plate). Those PCs are money, and in this case it was a lot of money. Steven found a mere $38,000 of cash in the car. The dummy behind the wheel claimed he didn’t know the money was even there, let alone whom it belonged to. Thank you dummy, that statement just made Steven $38,000 richer. No, Steven didn’t get to keep the money. But there should be a 10 percent finder’s fee, don’t you agree? Steven had another great stop recently, but it’ll have to wait until next time.

‘Til next time, remember, in I.B. we do more with less.
