Every enthusiast activity has its own set of important numbers. “Par” in golf, “300” in bowling, 0-60 mph time
in motorsports - the list continues indefi-nitely. For Porschephiles, numbers are an integral part of our own dialect. 356, 550, and 911 are just a few of the numbers we use regularly to communicate with like-minded folks. Recently, Porsche exhumed the “718” moniker for the newest genera-tion Boxster. Personally, I feel that iconic model numbers are somewhat sacred. While I understand the strong desire to play the legacy card, I would prefer to use “719” or something else to honor the legacy without trampling on it.
Recent iterations of the 911 sub-models also have me some-what confused. 911, 930, 964, 993, 996 and 997 designations all make perfect sense to this OCD brain. The train went off the tracks with the 991; where do we go from here?
Our French friends at Peugeot felt very strongly about “their” vehicle designations and forced Porsche to change “901” to “911.” Thanks, Peugeot; you did us a favor. Certainly “Nine-Eleven” rolls off the tongue much better than “Nine-Oh-One” or “Nine-Zero-One.” BMW used to have a very logical and simple system for their autos, the car series being the first digit, followed by the two-digit engine displacement label. A proliferation of models followed, and now the numbers are just that - numbers.
Other manufacturers face similar dilemmas when numbering their products. Boeing christened their jet fleet with 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, and 777. The Douglas DC-9 was quickly rebranded 717 upon the merger of the companies, and now we have the 787 as well. What will happen after the 797?
Life numbers have great significance and are often used for online security purposes. My formative years were very stable, as we lived in the same small tract house in Northridge for 15 years. The street address “8418” always brings back fond memories for me, as does our phone number Dickens-32095. Remember ex-changes, anybody out there?
Our age is probably the most important number the majority of us deal with regularly. We couldn’t wait to get to 18 to become semi-adults, except for the dreaded draft. 21st birthdays quite likely resulted in “driving the porcelain bus.” After that, the big milestones were only endured with endless jokes. Perspective is everything, with 10-years-younger being our fitness target and 10-years-older seeming, well, old. In reality, age is just a number, despite what the mirror tells us. Equipped with good genes from my parents, I rarely feel all of my 63 years, except when trying something physically foolish better suited to my 20s. Ouch! “I’m too old for this &$?!” is a refrain I hear too often. The more you say it, the sooner it will come true.
For all of you gentlemen, two numbers are of paramount im-portance. First and foremost, the birthday of your significant other should be of the highest priority. Second, your anniversary date. Forgetting one is dangerous, forgetting both will painfully teach you the meaning of double jeopardy. Don’t go there, the cost is dear.
Account numbers, credit card numbers, and social security numbers, they are all carefully protected in our modern world. Use them wisely, and they will treat you well. Enjoy your lives, and embrace those numbers that are special to you, whatever they may be. Go forth and multiply, or add, subtract, divide or ? Have fun!

The R.U.F. Report
On A MissionSTORY BY JEANNE MCNAIR PHOTOS BY DICK LANGE
Nineteen members of R.U.F. (Retired & Unemployed Folks) stayed local for our most recent event when we met at the Mission Produce processing and packing plant in Oxnard for a guided tour on June 22, 2016.
Mission Produce was founded here in 1983 and has grown to be the world’s leader in producing, distributing and marketing fresh Hass avocados. Hass avocados are the premier variety because of their buttery taste and their relatively long shelf life. Some of the company’s well-known clients are Costco, WalMart and Chi-potle. Mission processes avocados for hundreds of growers situ-ated from San Luis Obispo through San Diego counties. They also have a large plant in Peru handling avocados from Mexico, South America and New Zealand. Between their two operations, they are able to keep the avocado supply moving year-round.
The Oxnard plant opened at its present location in April 2015 and is the largest facility of its kind in North America. The 180,000-square-foot facility is state of the art with four acres of
solar panels, which supply 80% of its energy needs. The working areas are essentially a “cold box.” Because it is a food facility, we were asked to don hairnets and reflective safety vests before en-tering the processing area.
Zac Maodus, plant manager and West Point graduate, took us into the main processing area where we were able to observe the 90,000-square-foot operation from a catwalk mounted high above the work floor. The intricate daily processing of more than a quarter of a million pounds of avocados played out below us. The scene had an almost “Rube Goldberg” aspect to it with machinery in constant motion. There were multiple lines of pronged con-veyors filled with tumbling avocados, palettes of colorful packing
13AUGUST 2O16 DERAUSPUFF
boxes moving up and down among pulleys and circulating turn-tables filled with bagged avocados. The floor had multiple focused workers facilitating all of this activity.
Above the work floor was a computer-filled office, which di-rected the funneling of the avocados based on their various sizes. Before the avocados enter the processing area, they are washed with a 36-degree water solution, which both cleans them and also begins the cooling process. This cooling continues throughout the processing to maintain the freshness of the fruit. Once this
is completed, the boxed avocados are moved to the cold storage area before being shipped to the various vendors.
We all enjoyed learning about an industry that is key to Ventura County’s economic base. It was fascinating to observe the preci-sion operation of this plant.
We ended our excursion with lunch at Yolanda’s Mexican Cafe where we enjoyed visiting with friends and sharing -- what else? -- guacamole and chips. =
The views from the catwalk surrounding the 90,000 square-foot Mission Produce processing facility in Oxnard.

AUGUST 2O1622 DERAUSPUFF
New Members/Legacy Members PicnicI knew it was going to be an extra-special day the moment I
arrived at Premier Coach in Camarillo. Cliff Sullivan and his team knocked themselves out to make everyone feel very wel-come. Classy signs, a wonderful breakfast spread that included
rolls, muffins, bagels, lox, fruit, juices, coffee and more was com-plemented by the professional staff of handsome men and lovely ladies. Small tour groups were shown about the spotless facility, during which our members were able to ask questions and learn more about what it takes to repair a Porsche vehicle in accordance with the Porsche Approved Collision Center (PACC) program. Ob-viously, Premier Coach has made (and continues to make) a sub-
stantial investment in equipment and training to earn and retain the PACC certification.
After the group of almost 70 (includ-ing seven legacy and 25 new members) had eaten to their capac-ity, it was time to as-semble for the obliga-tory drivers’ meeting, thank our hosts and head out for points somewhat known. The ensuing drive was dia-bolically planned to in-clude lightly travelled sections where the ponies could run, semi-mellow passages to let the passengers settle their breakfasts and a very tiny bit of urban insanity to make the rest seem even more special.
After arriving at Dos Vientos Community Park, the first priority, of course, was to find the perfect parking place -- and then, where the heck are the restrooms? Gotta love coffee! Sadly, our illustri-ous tour leader in the bright blue car missed the final turn, caus-ing small mayhem and more than several “Huh, what happened?” comments. Of course, the blame was quickly shifted to son Chris, even though he was riding in another car. Details!
Fortunately, the advance team had arrived at the park plenty early to assess the logistic and decoration plans. Realizing that the pre-planning had resulted in sub-optimal table covering, plan B was quickly implemented. Damage control successful! The décor was awesome.
BBQ chicken, mac and cheese, rolls, green salad and a cookie assortment insured that those who had burned their breakfast along with their tires on the drive would not go hungry. More than a few partakers commented that the food was the best in recent memory, and no arguments were heard.
“Newest of the New” member Paul Aguilar was introduced, along with “Miss SBR” Anita Banke, legacy member extraordinaire with 49 years of PCA membership, all in the Santa Barbara Region. Wow! Paul and Anita were asked a few questions in an attempt to get to know them better. A few other members were then cajoled to answer the same queries, with Pamuela Hodson being the last victim. Everyone had fun listening to her stories, including the family-favorite bear story, reportedly better with every telling.
Too soon, it was time to head off towards home with full bellies, big smiles and new friends.
Once again, thanks to our new members for joining us; thanks to the legacy members for their long-term financial and emotion-al support of our region; and of course, thanks to the “tweener” members for all you do. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon. =

Premier Coach of Camarillo helped us kick off the day by hosting a morning meet and greet.
Inside the Premier Coach body shop during our tour of the facility.
The staff of Premier Coach made us feel very welcome, offering tours through their Porsche Approved Collision Center.

In addition, Don Dickey, the pro-posed Activities Co-Chair for 2017, was in attendance.
The following reports and discussions were presented:
Secretary: The May 2016 bi-monthly board meeting minutes taken by Howard Rubenstein were approved as submitted.
Vice President: No Report.
Treasurer: Jim Brown reported on the following Financial Statements for June 2016: (1) Income & Expense Previous Year Comparison June 2016, (2) Income & Ex-pense Previous Year Comparison Janu-ary through June 2016, (3) Statement of Cash Flows January through June 2016, (4) Income & Expense January through June 2016, (5) Balance Sheet Previous Year Comparison June 2016. Several changes were made to the financial reports that show more year-to-date information, which should better delineate the change in our cash position. Jim Brown advised the Board that the year-to-date cash flow is down compared to the same period last year due in part to loss of advertising rev-enue.
Membership: During the month of April, three new members joined our re-gion. At the end of June our membership stood at 756 primary members and one life member.
Activities: There are close to 70 people signed up for the Guadalupe Dunes tour
and members are also signing up fast for the Progressive Dinner. Doreen Pankow announced that upon her retirement from Activities Chair at the end of 2016, Don & Denise Dickey have agreed to become Ac-tivities Co-Chairs.
Editor: At the Porsche Parade in Ver-mont, Der Auspuff won first place in Class IV (similar sized regions) in the National Newsletter Contest.
Distribution: On June 24, 2016, 783 copies of the July Der Auspuff issues were mailed at a postage cost of $365.21. The balance in the Post Office account is $597.09, which will cover August’s issue mailing. Chet & Joan Yabitsu are request-ing additional funding to cover SEP, OCT, and NOV mailings. A motion was made and approved for a check in the amount of $1,200.00 to cover postage for the next three mailings of Der Auspuff.
Advertising: There were two new ad-vertisers added this month and none dropped. George North is continuing to pursue new advertising prospects. Cur-rently there are five outstanding invoices.
Goodie Store: No Report. Mike Hod-son announced that Goodie Store sales at the Camarillo Breakfast totaled $130.00. No sales were made at the Santa Barbara Breakfast.
Insurance: All certificates, up to and in-cluding the Progressive Dinner, have been ordered. No certificates are necessary for Treffen North America, the Detail Clinic or the Chili Cook-Off.
Concours: The Brundretts reported that with the help of Steve Ferrari, Con-cours registration will be available for the first time on Motorsport.reg
Autocross: Steve Ferrari reported that the April 23, 2016 Autocross event was a success. The excess income was approxi-mately $1,500. The date for the next Au-tocross is November 5, 2016. A request was made for $249.00 to update the com-puter software. Said amount is below the amount required for Board approval and, therefore, it was agreed to purchase the upgraded software.
Archives: The 2012 Zone 8 Region of the Year trophy has been archived.
Webmaster: The PCASB.ORG website has been updated for July and has a com-pleted calendar through October.
