I. Jacob 1 Miller ,23 born about 1785 in PA, worked as a miller and later as a farmer. He married Ann “Nancy” Ricketts 16 1 Jan 1807; six children. She was born about 1791. Her parents were Anthony A Ricketts Jr and Ellen Hand . Nancy died Dec 1820 Montgomery Co MD, age about 29.

Secondly, Jacob married Ann Harrison [Wallick] 10 Jul 1823; six children She was born about 1794. Her parents were Nathan Harrison and Mary Badan .

Ann was the widow of Christian Wallick Sr, Section 13, with whom she had two children. She died about 1842 in MD, age probably about 48.

Thirdly, Jacob married Mary H Burdette 17 Oct 1843; no children known to us.1 She was born about 1801. In 1880, age 79, she was living with her brother, Greenberry Burdette.

Jacob died Mar 1863 Montgomery Co MD, age about 78. His estate was settled 8 Jan 1864 by his son Nathan, and the land was sold 10 Mar 1864.17

JACOB's FATHER may have been Henry Miller, who is said to have been born about 1760 Glasgow, Scotland. Henry married 8 Mar 1779. It is thought his wife's name was Mary Brady . Henry died about 21 Sep 1808, age about 48, buried Jennings Chapel, Lisbon, Howard Co MD.

MARY H BURDETTE may have been a widow when she married Jacob. She was about 42 years old, and it would be reasonable to assume she might have been married previously. Because of a marriage announcement for Jacob Miller and "Mary (H Burdette) Bennett", we searched for some evidence that her first husband's name was Bennett, but haven't yet found anything conclusive.

A. Ariana 2 Miller ,18 born 15 Jan 1809, married her stepbrother Christian Wallich Jr 6 Jan 1837 Baltimore MD. He was born about 1816. His parents were Christian Wallick Sr and Ann Harrison .

Christian Jr died in 1890, age about 74. Ariana died 23 Aug 1893, age 84. Five children, including: Annie R, who married William C Bowman, page 12a-9; and

James Edward, father of KFE's grandmother Edmonia Wallach.

Ariana's stepmother, Ann Harrison [Wallick] [Miller], was the second wife of Ariana's father.

B. Jonathan2 Miller.

C. Elizabeth Ann2 Miller, born 1 Jun 1814 Montgomery Co MD, married John Allnutt -- see page 12a-4.

D. James2 Miller was born in 1816. He died in 1888, age about 76, buried Methodist Cemetery, Goshen, Montgomery Co MD.20

E. Priscilla L2 Miller, born 12 Jul 1817, married Thomas G Leishear (also spelled Leizear) 31 Jul 1844; four children. He was born 15 Nov 1816. He is shown as a farmer in the 1870 census, and as an undertaker in 1880.

He died 8 Dec 1893, age 77. She died 1 Mar 1902, age 84. They were buried St Luke's Cemetery, Brighton, Montgomery Co MD.

1. Sallie A3 Leishear was born about 1847.

2. Frances E3 Leishear, born 3 Jun 1849 Brighton, married James Anderson about 1869; one child: Blanche (born abt 1869, died abt 1885, age abt 16). Frances died 23 Aug 1879, age 30.

3. Thomas Miller3 Leishear,82 born 25 Dec 1851, married Mary Frances Molesworth 21 Feb 1877; at least three children. She was born 7 Oct 1855. In the 1920 census he is shown as a farmer near Olney MD. She died 25 Mar 1926, age 71. He died only about seven months later, 21 Oct 1926 Brighton, Montgomery Co MD, age 74. They were buried St Luke's Cemetery, Brighton.

We note the 20-year period between the first and second children.

a) Estelle4 Leishear was born 20 Jan 1878. She died 8 Nov 1881, age 3, buried St Luke's.b) Martha L4 Leishear was born about 1898 (age 22 in 1920 census).c) Thomas M4 Leishear Jr was born 12 Nov 1899. He died 30 Oct 1967 Olney MD, age 68.

H. Nathan H2 Miller was born about 1826. In 1850 he was a farmer, 24 years old.111 In 1864 he settled the estate of his father.17

I. Savilla 2 Miller , born 25 Oct 1827,112 married Richard Henry Bennett 20 Apr 1850 Montgomery Co MD; eleven children. He was born 8 Mar 1829. His parents are believed to have been John Bennett and (--?--) LeFevre .

Savilla died 19 Mar 1877 Germantown, Montgomery Co, age 49, buried Presbyterian Church, Neelsville, Montgomery Co.

Richard Henry married Martha Ann Trail 4 Mar 1881; two children. He died 14 May 1902, age 73, buried beside Savilla.

He is shown as a farmer, near Brighton MD, in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. He was born 24 Jun 1814. His parents were Aden Darby Allnutt (1789-<1855) and Amelia Bowman (c1783-c1867). Ann died 29 Mar 1890, age 75, buried Methodist Cemetery, Goshen, Montgomery Co. John died 29 Apr 1900, age 85.

7. Jacob Miller3 “Jake” Allnutt, born in 1851, is shown as a farmer in the 1880 census, living with his sister Mary Jane Allnutt [Benson]. He married Everline Warfield 22 Feb 1881. He died 3 Nov 1921 at his home near Laytonsville,88 age about 70. He and Everline were buried Methodist Cemetery.97

8. Charles E3 Allnutt,72 born in 1853, is shown as a farmer in the Cracklin District, Montgomery Co, in the 1880 census. He married Mary Etta Clagett 25 Oct 1887. He died 4 Apr 1937,88 age about 84, buried Rockville Cemetery, Rockville, Montgomery Co.

9. Sarah Elizabeth3 “Lizzie” Allnutt72 was born 20 Nov 1858. She died 28 Sep 1953, age 94, buried Methodist Cemetery, Goshen, Montgomery Co.98

In the 1870 census he is shown as a farmer near Brighton Post Office, Montgomery Co. He died 5 Jun 1879, age about 64. She died 27 Nov 1910, age 86. They were buried Rockville Cemetery, Rockville, Montgomery Co.

1. Sarah Ann3 Warfield,109 born about 1843 (age 7 in 1850 census), married Zachariah T Clagett 10 Jan 1861 Montgomery Co; at least one child. He was born about 1839. In 1870 and 1880, he is shown as a farmer.

a) Mary E4 Clagett was born about 1864.

2. Josephine3 Warfield was born about 1846 (age 4 in 1850 census). She died 12 Jul 1927, age about 81.

3. Jane R3 Warfield was born about 1848 (age 2 in 1850 census).

4. Mary E3 Warfield was born about 1852.

5. David Hanson3 Warfield, born about 1857, married Nannie Lyddane 7 Oct 1886 Montgomery Co. Born 23 Aug 1858, she died 12 Nov 1888, age 30.

He married Katherine Rebecca "Kate" Fields 23 Nov 1892 St Mary's Church, Rockville, Montgomery Co. She was born about 1870 (age 50 in 1920 census). In the 1920 census he is shown as a merchant (general merchandise) in Rockville.

He died 5 Oct 1924, age about 67, buried St Mary's Cemetery. His estate was probated 21 Oct 1924.24 She died 16 Dec 1945, age about 75.

6. Ada3 Warfield was born about 1861. She died 2 Jan 1928, age about 67.

7. Emma3 Warfield was born about 1864.

J. William2 Miller,72 born about 1829 (age 21 in 1850 census), married Rebecca Watkins 9 Dec 1852 Montgomery Co MD; six children. She was born about 1836. Her parents were Alpha Watkins (c1803-c1880) and Harriet Ann Lewis (c1805-16 May 1881). William was a miller. He died about 1864, age about 35.

THE WATKINS FAMILY -- Interesting information is available on Alpha's ancestors, for seven earlier generations, to 1621 in Wales.

1. Harriet Ann3 Miller,72 born about 1855 (age 5 in 1860 census), married George Beall of Frederick Co.

2. Washington M3 Miller, born 31 Dec 1853, married his first cousin Sarah Frances Bennett 7 Apr 1874 Montgomery Co MD; two children. She was born 7 Jan 1853. Her parents were Richard Henry Bennett and Savilla Miller , page 12a-3.

In the 1880 census, Washington is shown as a farmer in the Cracklin District of Montgomery Co. Sarah died 17 Jul 1928, age 75. He died 16 Feb 1929, age 75. They were buried Presbyterian Church, Neelsville, Montgomery Co.

a) Jessie R4 Miller was born about 1875.113

b) Ionia4 Miller was born about Nov 1879.113

3. Jacob3 Miller, born 21 Jan 1861, married Caroline Virginia Hanshew, married Mary Catherine Hanshew, and married Carrie Krouse -- see page 12a-15.

4. Ella3 Miller, born 11 Sep 1863, married Joseph Thomas Allnutt -- see page 12a-11.

5. Alpha3 Miller72 was born about 1866 (age 14 in 1880 census163). She was unmarried in 1894.

6. William P3 Miller,72 born about 1859 in MD (age 9 months in 1860 census; age 70 in 1930 census164), lived in Washington DC. He married Etta Johnson abt 1904. She was born abt 1869.

The 1930 census indicates that they were living in their owned home near Wheaton, Montgomery Co, and gives their ages when they married (45 for him and 36 for her, the first marriage for each).

K. Rebecca2 Miller165,166,167 was born 12 Jul 1831 Montgomery Co MD. She married Zachariah Dowden III 6 Feb 1852 Montgomery Co; nine children72 born Montgomery Co. A farmer near Clarksburg, Montgomery Co, he was born 12 Jul 1829 Culpeper VA. His parents were Zachariah Dowden II (1792-1865) and Elizabeth Fulks (1796-1897). Rebecca died 18 Jan 1886 Clarksburg, age 54. Zachariah died 28 Jul 1900, age 71. They were buried Presbyterian Church, Neelsville, Montgomery Co.

We note that five of their nine children died in Ohio, four in Clark Co and one in Franklin Co. We'd like to know more about when and why these families moved so far away.

1. Annie Elizabeth3 Dowden,169,170 born 24 Nov 1852, married John Benjamin Wallace 27 Sep 1871 Montgomery Co. He died 13 Oct 1928. She died 30 Apr 1929 Springfield, Clark Co OH, age 76, buried Newcomers' Cemetery, Springfield.

2. Lucy Catherine3 “Kate” Dowden,171 born 10 Nov 1854, married Joshua Franklin Whipp 18 Aug 1877. She died 24 Jun 1937 Columbus, Franklin Co OH, age 82.

3. Ida Virginia3 Dowden, born 12 Feb 1857, married Stephen Ursheline Hoyle 14 Nov 1879 Evangelical Lutheran Church, Middletown, Frederick Co MD. He was a store clerk near Clarksburg MD. She died 27 Jul 1936 Springfield, Clark Co OH, age 79.

4. William Theodore3 Dowden,171,174 born 12 Oct 1859, married Roberta Jane “Bertie” Benson 1 Dec 1886 Montgomery Co; three children.175 She was born 9 May 1861. He was killed by a runaway train Feb 1924 Baltimore MD, age 64. She died 14 Aug 1935, age 74.

7. Sarah Wilson3 Dowden,169,180 born 31 May 1867, married Bradley T King 14 Jun 1892 Montgomery Co; three children.100 He was born Feb 1866. His parents were Charles C King (1846-1920) and Mary E Watkins (1846-1911). Sarah died about 1948, age about 81, buried Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cedar Grove, Montgomery Co. Bradley died about 1959, age about 93.

L. Catherine Verlinda2 “Kate” Miller,22 born 10 Nov 1838, married James Washington Selby 22 Dec 1862 Montgomery Co MD; seven children.72

He was born 13 Feb 1833. In the 1850 census, he is shown as a mail carrier; in the 1880 census, he is shown as a farmer in the Cracklin District, Montgomery Co. His parents were Allen Selby (c1790-1864) and Harriet Gloyd (1792-1882).

Kate died 21 Aug 1890, age 51, buried Forest Oak Cemetery, Gaithersburg, Montgomery Co. James died 7 Mar 1909, age 75.

Some other connections among the Selby and Gloyd families are in Section 13.

1. Harriet Ann3 Selby, born about 1864 (age 6 in the 1870 census), married Andrew Mobley.

2. Fannie S3 Selby was born about 1866 (age 4 in the 1870 census). She was unmarried in 1894.

3. Mary G3 Selby, born about 1868 (age 2 in 1870 census), married William Mobley. He may have been a brother of Andrew, who married her sister Harriet.

4. John A3 Selby was born 26 Apr 1871. In 1894 he was unmarried and living in Montgomery Co. In 1930, he was a carpenter, living in Gaithersburg town, married to Henrietta [Selby].180 He died 19 Feb 1954, age 72, buried Forest Oak Cemetery.

5. Lula Catherine3 Selby,182 born 3 Feb 1873, married Alexander Carter; at least two chldren. He was born 5 Sep 1878. His parents were Alexander Carter Sr and Elizabeth Bolton. Alexander Jr died 23 Mar 1916, age 37. Lula died 6 Feb 1957, age 84, buried Forest Oak Cem.

a) Ruby4 Carter was born about 1903.

b) Selby4 Carter was born about 1906.

6. Bessie Jane3 Selby, born 13 Jun 1875, married George T Beavers 29 Dec 1896.

7. Lillian M3 Selby was probably born about 1881. She isn't shown in the 1880 census, but is included in the 1894 list of Kate's children.72

In 1870 and 1880, he is shown as a farmer near Brighton. She died about 1912, age about 70. He died about 1921, age about 81, buried Methodist Cemetery, Laytonsville.82

a) William E4 Allnutt, born 14 Aug 1864, married Florence E Houck (marriage license 21 Apr 1896 Washington DC). He died 20 Jun 1924 near Laytonsville, age 59, buried Laytonsville.

b) Lula Belle4 Allnutt may not have been the second child in the family; we don't know her birthdate.

c) Anna E4 “Annie” Allnutt was born 4 Jun 1867. She died 4 Dec 1878 Montgomery Co, age 11, buried Laytonsville.

He died 23 Feb 1917, age 73, buried beside Mary in Methodist Cemetery, Laytonsville.

Secondly, Carrie married Rezin's nephew Clinton Bowman. He was born 18 May 1869. His parents were William C Bowman (born about 1838, brother of Rezin) and Annie R Wallich (daughter of Christian Wallich Jr and Ariana Miller, page 12a-2).

Clinton died 1 Apr 1938, age almost 69. Carrie died 7 Mar 1971, age 97. They were buried Methodist Cemetery, Goshen, Montgomery Co.

THE BOWMAN FAMILY -- Aden Bowman married Keziah Sedgwick; son George Washington Bowmanmarried Eleanor Young; six children, including: William C (father of Clinton); Rezin W; and Marcella Augusta (married James Edward Wallich, Section 13).

3. James William3 “Bill” Allnutt, born in 1842 near Laytonsville, Montgomery Co MD, married Mary Jane Groomes 14 Jun 1870; seven children. She was born about 1852. Her father was Franklin Groomes. In the Cracklin District of Montgomery Co in the 1880 census, Bill is shown as a "farmer & huckster" (truck farmer?).

Mary Jane died Dec 1918, age about 66. Bill died 29 Aug 1921, age about 70.88 They and all their children were buried Methodist Cemetery, Laytonsville.83,87

Sadly, we note that, of Bill and Mary Jane's seven children, only two lived to adulthood. Two died in infancy, and three others as very young children. The two youngest children died the same year.

a) John Franklin4 Allnutt was born 17 Jan 1871. He died 9 Jul 1875, age four.

b) William E4 Allnutt,90 born about 1875, married Eva C Baker about 1900 Montgomery Co; at least two children. He died about 1924, age about 49. Born about 1864, Eva died about 1929, age about 64.

Eva was about 36 years old when she married William, and may have been a widow.

He married his half-first cousin Ella Miller168 2 Sep 1885; ten children born Montgomery Co.93 She was born 11 Sep 1863. Her parents were William Miller and Rebecca Watkins, page 12a-6.

Tom died 18 Dec 1934, age 90. Ella died 25 Jan 1943, age 79. They were buried Methodist Cemetery, Laytonsville.83

Tom's mother, Elizabeth Ann Miller, was a daughter of Jacob Miller and Ann Ricketts. Ella's father, William Miller, was a son of Jacob Miller and Ann Harrison [Wallick]. Thus, Elizabeth Ann and William were half-siblings, so Tom and Ella were “double” first cousins.

a) Bessie M4 Allnutt, born 20 Jun 1886, married Raymond Lafayette Warfield 19 Nov 1913; son Basil (born 30 Dec 1917). Raymond was born 19 Jul 1890.

b) Walter T4 Allnutt, born 31 Mar 1888, married Ida May Moore 20 Nov 1912. Born 23 Sep 1891, she died 13 Jun 1943, age 51. Walter died 16 May 1979, age 91. They were buried Mt Tabor Cemetery, Etchison, Montgomery Co.

He married Mary Catherine “Kate” Hanshew Jun 1891 Washington DC; no children known to us. She was born 14 Jun 1851. Her parents were Henry Edward Hanschy and Caroline Margaret Keller. Kate died May 1899, age 47. According to her obituary in the Montgomery Co Sentinel, she and Jacob were living on DuFief Mill Road when she died.

In the early 1900s Jacob was operator of a livery stable in Gaithersburg, Montgomery Co. He married Carrie Krouse [Briggs] 1910 Montgomery Co MD; no children known to us. In the 1930 census they were living in his owned residence on Diamond Avenue, Gaithersburg.157

He died 31 Jan 1939 Gaithersburg, age 78.158 We don't know when Carrie died. They are said to have been buried (possibly in unmarked graves) Forest Oak Cemetery, Gaithersburg.159

b) Beulah4 Miller,160 born 22 Jul 1885 Darnestown, Montgomery Co MD, married Neuman Washington Crawford 24 Dec 1905. He was born 13 Oct 1879. In the 1920 census, he is shown as a farm manager near Gaithersburg. He died 28 Sep 1937 Frederick, Frederick Co MD, age 57. She died 3 May 1974 Frederick Nursing Center, Frederick, age 88, buried Forest Oak Cemetery, Gaithersburg.

i) Francis Marion5 Crawford was born 18 Oct 1907. He died 10 May 1917, age nine, less than three weeks after his sister Eugenia.

ii) Eugenia Mildred5 Crawford was born 6 Apr 1909. She died 23 Apr 1917, age eight.It is, obviously, tragic that Beulah and Neuman lost their two oldest children so close together.

We wonder if they died in an epidemic; we are also curious why the three younger children survived.

iii) Hazel Virginia5 Crawford, born 14 Jun 1913 Frederick Co, married Clay Dawson 20 Nov 1941 New York NY. She died 10 May 1997 Manassas VA, age almost 84.

iv) Alby Washington5 Crawford, born 22 Oct 1914, married Elizabeth Delue Walsschmidt Frederick Co MD. He died 21 Jan 1972 Frederick Co, age 57.
