Marriage Notes for Minnie House and Larkin Fain:HOUSE-FAIN Jessamine Journal 7-7-1911Married at the residence of the officiating minister, Rev. W.H. Morris, in Lexington, Wednesday, June 28, Mr. Larkin Fain and Miss Minnie House, both of Beulah neighborhood. On the chosen wedding day, Minnie was in charge of cooking the noon meal and had put on a pot of beans. Larkin arrived in his buggy at the appointed time and waited at the front gate by the road. Minnie's house was about a block or so down a ridge. She slipped out of the house, leaving the beans on the stove, and she and Larkin eloped in the buggy. The unattended beans burned, and her sisters later teased Minnie by bringing up "the day Minnie burned the beans." I have been told that for some years after that, whenever a local maiden eloped, the neighbors would says, "so-and-sos daughter burned the beans yesterday."

A native of Jessamine County, he was the son of the late Cyrus Newton and Laura Belle House Teater. He was the owner of Teater’s Trucking Service and a member of the Edgewood Baptist Church. His survivors include a son, Rollie D. Teater of Lexington; three daughters, Roberta (Bennis) Stinnett, Billie Jean Teater, and Nina (Donald) Young, of Nicholasville; six grandchildren, Dora Elaine Collins of Lancaster, Monte Howard Young of Nicholasville, Sara Young of California; Rebecca Young of Lexington, Gary Dean Teater of Garrard County, and Rhonda Ellison of Nicholasville; a great grandson, Bradie Keith Ellison of Nicholasville; a nephew, Vernon "Buddy" Teater of Nicholasville; two nieces, June C. Notes for Cornelius R. Hager:NICHOLASVILLE - Dr. C.R. Hager, 93, beloved father and grandfather, passed away at Wesley Village in Wilmore, KY. He was a native of Jessamine County. Hager was a graduate of Nicholasville High School, received his AB degree from Asbury College, his BD from Asbury Seminary, a MA from the University of Kentucky, and an LLD from Asbury College. He completed further graduate studies at Columbia University and the University of Chicago. He served in World War II as a transport commander in the United States Army spending two years in the South Pacific. He served in the National Guard for eight years and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. Hager had a distinguished career in education as a school teacher, counselor with the Veterans Administration, liaison officer with the Kentucky Welfare Dept., and as superintendent of schools of Jessamine County for ten years. He was assistant dean of Extended Programs and Adult Education at the University of Kentucky for twenty seven years. He helped found the University's Community College Program and served as its director of Extension. He also helped develop the Donovan Scholar's program and served as director. He was a member of the Asbury College board of trustees and served as president of the Asbury College on three occasions and vice-president for academic affairs for one year. He was executive director of the United Methodist Foundation. He served as secretary-treasurer and president of the Central Kentucky Education Association, president of the Kentucky Education Association, president of the Kentucky School Administrators Association, was a delegate to the World Conference on Education, and chairman of the KKentucky Older Adult Legislative Com- mission. He had a distinguished record of service to the United Methodist Church. Hager was a member of the Nicholasville UMC, a delegate to the General Conference of the UMC on eight occasions, Kentucky Conference lay leader, and secretary of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the UMC for twelve years. He was a founding member of the board of directors of Wesley Village and also served on the board of the Methodist Home of Kentucky. He was also active in community affairs. Hager co-founded the Little League and Babe Ruth Leagues of Jessamine County, was a leader of Boy Scouts, and served as a charter member of the Withers Memorial Library board, 4-H Council, Fair Board, and the Jessamine County Beef Cattle Association. He was honored as one of the original Heroes, Saints and Legends by Wesley Village. His family was selected as the UMC Family of the Year. Hager received the Asbury College "A" Award. He was chosen as Jessamine County Citizen of the Year and received the Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award. He was honored by the UK Phi Delta Kappa for meritorious service. Dr. Hager was the son of Arch, Sr. and Myrtie Hager. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Lyman, Arch, Jr. and Elesteen and three sisters: Thelma Cobb, Eudel Cobb and Flossie Hayden. He is survived by a brother, Vernon and sister, Marie. His devoted wife, Ruth died in 1995. He has three children: Nela (Doug) Marshall, Dan (Sandy) Langer, and David (Kathleen Martin) Hager; twelve grandchildren: David and Elizabeth Marshall, Drew and Cindy Langer, Philip (Lisa), Neal (Shannon) and Jonathan (Natalie) Hager, Matt (Angelica) McMullen and Lorraine (Matt) Leet; Kelly, Jessica and Kristen Moore; and two great grandchildren: Julia Loveday and Jack Hager. Hager, a retired educator who was interim president of Asbury College, superintendent of Jessamine County schools and director of the University of Kentucky's Donovan Scholars Program, died of congestive heart failure yesterday at Wesley Village in Wilmore. He was 93.Mr. Hager was interim president of Asbury in the late 1960s, from 1981 to 1983 and from 1992 to 1993. He was Jessamine schools superintendent from 1947 to 1957. He was a UK administrator from 1957 to 1979, except for a leave of absence to head Asbury. He was assistant dean of UK extended programs and director of the university's Council on Aging. Part of the latter job included overseeing the council's Donovan Scholars Program for senior citizens. Mr. Hager was instrumental in establishing UK's Donovan Scholars Program, said A.D. Albright, retired president of Northern Kentucky University. "It has come to be a highly favorite program for us old people," Albright said. Mr. Hager also was instrumental in the development of UK extension centers, which enabled people around the state to take college-level courses. Those centers eventually became part of the UK community college system, said Albright, a former boss of Mr. Hager's at UK. Mr. Hager also set up the first firefighter training program in the state, he said.Born July 2, 1913, in Jessamine County, Mr. Hager was the son of Arch Hager Sr., a former Jessamine County sheriff, and Myrtie Hager. He received degrees from Asbury College, Asbury Theological Seminary and UK. He also did graduate work at the University of Chicago and Columbia University. He was a teacher and principal in Nicholasville schools from 1935 to 1938 and a liaison officer for the Kentucky Department of Welfare from 1938 to 1942. He was an Army transport commander during World War II, spending two years in the South Pacific. Mr. Hager also was a Veterans Administration counselor. He was Jessamine schools superintendent at a time when racial tension was high throughout the country. Mr. Hager was threatened because he followed the law, accepting a U.S. Supreme Court decision that "separate but equal" schools were "no longer the law of the land," Albright said. "That was probably the most controversial time of his life," said Mr. Hager's daughter, Nela Marshall of Nicholasville. "He felt like the schools needed to be integrated."Mr. Hager was "a fine human being, honest and upfront," Albright said. "He followed Christian values and had a wide range of professional experience in education." Besides being president of Asbury College, he also was a vice president for academic affairs, a longtime trustee and president of the alumni association. He was a past president of the Kentucky Education Association and held leadership roles in numerous other professional education organizations. Active in the United Methodist Church, Mr. Hager was chief lay officer of the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church for several years. He was a delegate to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church several times and was former secretary of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. He also had been executive director of the Kentucky United Methodist Foundation and had served on the board of the Methodist Home of Kentucky, near Versailles. Once a farmer who raised beef cattle and a large garden, Mr. Hager had served on the Jessamine County 4-H Council and Jessamine County Fair Board. He was a recipient of the Asbury College "A" Award, was once named Jessamine County Citizen of the Year by the county's Chamber of Commerce and was inducted into the chamber's Hall of Fame. He was the widower of Ruth Lansell Hager.In addition to his daughter, he is survived by two sons, Dr. David Hager of Lexington and Dan Langer of Akron, Ohio; a brother; a sister; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Asbury College's Hughes Auditorium in Wilmore. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the auditorium. A native of Jessamine County she was born May 9, 1912, to the late Harmon and Jewel Dean Teater. She was the widow of William Fountain House who died in 1963. “Mama” Mary as she was affectionately known by both family and friends loved to travel and was always ready to go when invited. She was most proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always eager to talk about them. She enjoyed being a part of the breakfast crowd at Arby’s and had acquired her own reserved seat there. Survivors include her 3 children Mildred Don Tracy, Billy Fount House and Sandy Hammons, Marilyn “Mickey” H. Pope and husband Miles H., 4 grandchildren Debbie Gardner, Tal House, Steve House, and Andy Criner, 6 great grandchildren Ryan Gardner, Crystal Agee, Logan House, Kyndall House, Caroline Criner, and Kate Criner, and 2 great great grandchildren Lauren and Garrett Stocker.

Services will be 2:00 PM Wed., Nov. 29, at HAGER & CUNDIFF FUNERAL HOME, W. Oak St., with Rev. Lee Baltzer officiating, burial in Maple Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be George Hager , Billy Teater, Dee Wilson, and Gene Buskirk. Visitation will be at the

He retired from the New York University School of Medicine in 2007 where he served as Executive Vice Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology. Prior to joining the faculty at NYU, Dr. Beattie was Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt for seven years. He was also on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, from 1981 to 1994. He served as clinical director of the department and as interim chairman before going to Vanderbilt. At Hopkins, Dr. Beattie received "Best Teacher" recognition and was the principal investigator of NIH awards. Throughout his academic career, he was active in clinical care, research, teaching, and administration. Dr. Beattie began his higher education in chemical engineering, receiving bachelors and master's degrees from the University of Louisville. He received his doctorate in nuclear engineering from New York University. His medical education, anesthesiology and fellowship training were obtained at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Beattie approached life with curiosity, enthusiasm, humor, and compassion. He is survived by his adoring wife, Missy Comley Beattie and loving children, John Charles Beattie of San Francisco, John Whitlow of New York City, and Hunter Comley Beattie of North Carolina, as well as many friends. Comley and Cathy Hancock Comley.Comley was a member of the 2nd Platoon, B Company, 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C.He was a 2002 graduate of Sayre School and was a pitcher and catcher for the Sayre baseball team, earning third team all-city honors for his catching skills. He was also the starting center for the Sayre basketball team and earned a number of other athletic awards for his abilities on any style of playing field. In 2000, he was awarded the Spartan Cup at Sayre, an award named in memory of his late uncle, W. Clinton Hancock II. He was a 2002 graduate of Sayre School and was a pitcher and catcher for the Sayre baseball team, earning third team all-city honors for his catching skills. He was also the starting center for the Sayre basketball team and earned a number of other athletic awards for his abilities on any style of playing field. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Victor and Geraldine Comley of Nicholasville; and his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Hancock. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, W.
