HistoryThe Faculty of Architectural Engineering, newly named Faculty of Architecture-Design and BuiltEnvironmentwasfoundedin1962asthefourthfacultyatBAU.Sincecommencement,ithasplayedakeyroleinaddressingandservingtheneedsofstudentsfromLebanonandtheentireMiddleEast.TheFacultystartedwith36studentsin1962prosperingtoatotalof786studentsin2016,atvariouslevelsofArchitectureprograminDebbiehandTripoliCampuses.

TheFacultywas initially locatedat themainbuilding inBeirutcampus.However, in1987and inordertoaccommodatetheincreasingnumberofstudentsandfacilities,itmovedtothenowlabeled“HaririBuilding”andoccupiedthetop fourfloors. It remainedthereuntilOctober2006when itbecamethefirstBAUfacultytoresideinthenewlyestablishedDebbiehcampusintheShoufDistrictinlinewiththeUniversity’sexpansionplans.Moreover,theFacultyhasexpandedtoTripoliCampussince2010andnowithostsaround206students.

The Faculty constantly updates its programs and associated structure, offering new programsrespondingtothecommunityneedsandjobmarket.In2005,theFacultyimplementedtheCredit

Hour System, instead of the two academic terms scheme, thereby offering students a moreadaptable and responsive program spreading over a ten-semester period (minimum) for theprogramofArchitecture.Lately,theFacultyhaslaunchednew3-yearprogramsinDesignatDebbiehandTripoliCampuses;theprogramsofInteriorDesign,GraphicDesignandLandscapeDesignwerefirstlyofferedinFall2014/2015,andinFall2016/2017theFashionDesignprogramhasbeenalsointroduced.Today,thenumberofstudentsregisteredintheseprogramsis117studentsinDebbiehCampusand32students inTripoliCampus.

In June 2012, the 5-year Bachelor program in Architecture has been awarded unconditionalvalidationforRIBAPart1.DuringtheacademicYear2013/2014,theprogramstructurehasbeenrevisedandre-organizedaimingthatPart1tobemetoncompletionof4years(140creditstakenover8 semesters)andPart2after thecompletionof2additionalyears (58credits takenover4semesters).Accordingly,theoffereddegreesaretheBachelorofArchitecturebythecompletionof170creditstakenover10semesters,andtheMasterdegreeinArchitecture(March.)offeredbythecompletionof28creditstakenover2additionalsemesters.ThisrestructuringstartedtobeappliedfromFall 2014/2015, and theRIBA ExploratoryVisitingBoard inNovember 2015 recommendedthatthecandidateMArchcourseforrecognitionandthatithasthepotentialtomeetRIBAcriteria.MArchprogramhasbeengrantedcandidatecoursestatusforRIBAPart2.AfullRIBArecognitionofPart2andcontinuedrecognitionofPart1fortheBArchandMArchprogramsinArchitecturetookplaceatthefacultyinFebruary2017andawardedtheFacultyunconditionalvalidationforbothRIBAPart1andRIBAPart2until2022.

Mission ConsistentwiththeUniversitystrategy,theFacultyofArchitecture-DesignandBuiltEnvironmentiscommittedtodeliveringaprofessionalarchitecturaleducationnecessaryforthoseseekingtoenterthearchitecturalpractice.TheFaculty’sacademicmissionistofurtherdevelopthedisciplineandpracticeofarchitecture throughaseamlessprogramofundergraduateandpostgraduatestudiesrespecting individualism and diversity, and fostering for creativity and rationalism in design andconstruction process. The Faculty seeks to educate diligent architectswho practice their careerin a responsivemanner towards the society, culture and environment at the local, regional andinternational level.

Academic ProgramsTheFacultyoffersaBachelorofArchitectureDegreewhere thestandarddurationof study is10semesters,aswellasBachelordegreesinDesignprogramsincludingInteriorDesign,GraphicDesign,LandscapeDesign,andFashionDesignwherethedurationofstudyissixsemesters.

I-ARCHITECTUREObjectives The teaching of Architecture employs a progressive strategy to achieve the following broadobjectives:

•Tocreateandmaintainapositiveeducationalenvironmentthatpromoteslearningandpersonaldevelopment;

•To deliver high-quality architectural education, through a developed curriculum and syllabuswith inherent flexibility and freedomof selectingdifferent fields of specialization;

•Toadoptprogressivelearningmethodswhichleadtodevelopedknowledgeandacquiredskills,ensuredthroughadequatedeliveryandtestingprocessesateachstageofstudy;

•Toprovidestudentswithacomprehensivebasisofawareness,knowledge,understanding,andaptitude,throughcoveringawidespectrumoftheoreticalandpracticalstudiesinsuchfieldsasEnvironment,Art,Culture,Technology,Sociology,andEconomy;and

•Toimplementanongoingprocessofmonitoringanddevelopmentofperformance,drivenbytheemphasisonfutureadvances,withinthedomainofarchitectureaswellasrelateddisciplines.

Admission RequirementsTobeacceptedforanundergraduatedegree,applicantsmust:•Hold the official Lebanese Secondary School Certificate in a branch relevant to the chosenundergraduate field of specialization, or an official equivalent;

•Successfully pass an entrance exam tomeasure the level of proficiency in English Language(orprovideevidenceofEnglishLanguageabilitiessuchasTOEFL,ILETS…),andanaptitudetest(thinkingskills, technicalandarchitecturalskills),aswellasattendaPersonal Interview.

Learning Outcomes The Faculty offers the Bachelor Degree in Architecture in a five-year cumulative program (10semesters).Afterthefifthyear, theundergraduatestudent isaqualifiedarchitectandeligibletopractice professionally with the following abilities and skills:•Fullunderstandingofallarchitecturalandengineeringconceptsandpractices.•Knowledgeoftheevolvingnatureoftheprofession,andtherapidlychangingconditionsinwhicharchitectscurrentlypractice,andinwhichthetraditionalexpertise,capacitiesandauthorityareincreasinglybeingchallenged.

•Understanding of modern and contemporary architectural theories that explain the latestphilosophiesbywell-knownarchitectsandthelocalarchitectureinordertopreservethelocalidentity.

Program Overview The undergraduate curriculum for the degree of Bachelor in Architecture consists of 170 credithours+ICDL.However,UniversityRequirementshaveatotalof12creditswhichleaves158creditsforArchitecturecourses.Architecturecoursesthusformatotalof93%oftherequiredcoursesforgraduation.Thetotalcredithoursofdesignstudioandsupportingcoursesare118outof158,thusconstituting75%ofthetotalArchitecturecredithours.ThistotalnumberofdesignstudiocredithoursisformedofDesignStudioCourses.Design Supporting Courses are calculated in different percentages according to their effectiverelevance to design studio courses.

ARCH279 ARCHITECTURAL SKETCHING (2Cr.: 0Lec, 4Stu) Developing graphic language by which an architect explains buildings and other objectsusingarangeoffundamentaldrawingskillsandmedia.Exercisesinfreehand representationaldrawingusingcharcoal,graphite,andcontecrayonwithemphasison line,proportion,values,andcomposition.Portfolioofdrawingsbasedonobservation ofthephysicalworld,inparticularthebuiltworld.Studiesprogressfromgeometricto non-geometric forms.

ARCH280 ACADEMIC WRITING (2Cr.: 2Lec) Methods and tools needed to prepare academic and professional documents are reviewed.Basicknowledgeaboutvarioussteps,stages,andprocessofproductionof completeresearchpapersandtechnicalreports,theprinciplesofwriting,standards, requisites, considerations, phases, and subject-related requirements. The final assessment in thiscourse is tobecarriedout internally (e.g.oraldiscussionand/or within exam).

ARCH291 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN I (5 Cr.: 0Lec, 10Stu) FundamentalsofArchitecturalDesignProcess.Designprojectsrequiringtheoretically informedandpracticallyviablearchitecturaldesignsolutions.Designsinresponseto specificaims includingmodulardesign,architectural spacegrouping,articulationofspacesandfunctionalrelationships.Pre-req.:ARCH272.

ARCH295 HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE II (2Cr.: 2Lec) Study and review of Early Christian architecture, Byzantine architecture, Medieval architecture,RomanesqueandGothicarchitecture,andRenaissancearchitecture inEurope through15thand16thCenturies.

ARCH296 THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE II (2Cr.: 2Lec) This course explores the form, space and scale: form defining space, qualities of architectural space, articulation and organization of form and space, circulation elementsandbuildingapproaches.Itinvestigatestheintentionsinarchitecture:design process,architecturalconceptandunity.Italsoreviewstheprinciplesofaesthetics: vocabularyofarchitecturalcompositions,visualandaestheticrelationships.Thecourse includes analysis of design principles and their applications in various architecturalexamples.

ARCH297 THEORY OF COLORS (2Cr.: 1Lec, 2Stu) Colortheoriesincludingavarietyofconcepts,aswellasmanypracticalusesofcolor withinarchitecture.ColorAspects:psychologyofvisualperception,humanresponse tovisualimageryandcommunicationusingcolor.Designer’sMethodstodevelopand bestutilizecolorwithinenvironments.Informedapplicationofpracticalcolortheoryprinciplestostudentprojectsselectingcolorswiselyanddeliberately.

ARCH298 INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS (2Cr.: 2Lec) Principlesoflighting(daylightandartificial)inbuildings,Reducingnoiseandenhancing sound for communication. Regulating heat transfer for occupant thermal comfort. Description of passive means for environmental control, including presentation of scientific explanations and design guidelines for utilizing these means. Design guidelines for use in the preliminary schematic design phase.

MissionTheMission of the Landscape design program is to prepare students into becoming innovativelandscape practitioners, in both public service and private practice, to create a positive impactonthenaturalandbuiltenvironments,asthey intersectwithmeansofurbanizationofthe local,regional,andinternationalcommunities.Theofferedprogrambuildsadesignexpertisebasedonboth theoretical and applied understanding of human and natural systems, gained through aninterdisciplinary approach to project-based learning.

4- Fashion Design Program

MissionThe mission of the Fashion Design Program at Beirut Arab University is to provide learningopportunitiesthatintegratescriticalthinkingskillswithawidevarietyofcreativeexperiencesinthefieldofFashionDesign.Verybroadly,theFashionDesignProgramseekstoprovidestudentswiththehighestprofessional standards toadvanceahuman-centeredpracticeofFashiondesign thatcontributespositively to thehealth, safetyandwell-beingofpeople in local, regionalandglobalcontexts.

ObjectivesThe broad aim of Fashion design program is to provide a variety of transformative learningopportunitiestoshapecreative,rational,sociallyandenvironmentallyresponsibleFashiondesignprofessionals. This thorough goal is supported through the following objectives:

-To develop the intellectual and practical skills of the student in the concepts, principles,developmentandrealizationofcostumesdesignforthefashionindustry,withasolidbackgroundofdesigntheories,histories,environmentalresponsiveness,andstandards;alongwithcreativeandcritical thinkingskills.

-Tofosterthedevelopmentofanopenmindedandcreativeattitude,balancedwithorganizationalskillsandresponsivenesstotherapidlychangingneedsofthefashionindustryandtoachieveusers’needsinvariousenvironments.
