When it comes to finding ajob, Mosa Parris, 21, facesthree challenges: 1) graduatinginto a tough job market; 2)having catch-up work to doafter switching majors lastyear; 3) switching to a majornot known for being in univer-sal demand, fine arts.

Still, the Hofstra Universitysenior left Tuesday’s careerevent, “Not All Artists AreStarving,” full of hope and en-thusiasm. A former pre-medstudent, she said, “It was in-spiring, revealing and every-thing I need to hear.”

One key theme from severalof the seven speakers, all formerarts majors now working in thefield: Don’t expect a straightpath to finding a job or buildinga career. “If you have a plan, ex-pect it not to happen, and thatdoesn’t mean it’s a negative,”said Amy Dresser, a 1998 Hofstragraduate, now a freelance photoretoucher and illustrator in LosAngeles. She told of having to de-velop business savvy after a staffjob ended. At first when she wasasked for her hourly rate, shesaid she thought, “I don’t knowhow to talk that way.”

Sean O’Kane, a 2008 gradu-ate and photo assistant forInStyle.com, told the close to90 students attending how theunexpected could happen “inreally good ways.” Early on,he had applied for freelancework with that Web site.Nothing came of that, he said, but when he least expected it,

he was contacted for an in-tern position, which seemedto “come out of the blue.”

Another key message: Honoryour passion even if you’re notsure where it’s taking you.Yvonne Dagger, a 1994 Hofstragrad, told how her love for ani-mals led her to paint portraits ofshelter dogs and cats. Her hus-band asked what she was doing;she said she didn’t know. Butsoon after, MarthaStewart.comlearned of her work, which isnow featured on the site.

Also, develop a practical side, several speakers said. O’Kanetold of his increased apprecia-tion for things like health bene-fits, which he has on his job, andthe need to “give practical mat-ters a thought.” One of the hard-est things for an artist is to doself-marketing, said Dagger, yetit must be done. Also, if youwant to be a painter, her adviceis, “Don’t quit your day job.”

The event was coordinated byEmily Miethner, a Hofstra seniorand marketing/events intern atTime Out New York magazine,in conjunction with the school’scareer center. “We’re graduatingsoon, and that’s scary in general,”she said. Hearing from those whohave made it, “gives you hope.”

Parris, who grew up in Guya-na and says she “dreams fashiondesigns” in her head, agrees. Herplan is to attend the school’s jobfair next week in search of an in-ternship, hopefully related tofashion. Yes, she said, there maybe times when “you’re down inthe dumps. But the day you giveup is possibly the day you wouldget your big break.”

Astellas raises pressure inhostile takeover bid of OSI

Melville-based OSI Pharma-ceuticals Inc. was under increas-ing pressure from shareholdersas a Japanese drugmaker Tues-day began the formal process ofa hostile takeover. Shares of OSIsoared more than 40 percentfrom a Friday close of $37 onnews that Astellas Pharma Inc., aglobal pharmaceutical maker, would offer $52 a share and

would go directly to sharehold-ers. Earlier proposals to the OSIboard were rejected. OSI, whoseresearch focuses on drugs forcancer and diabetes, is in the pro-cess of moving to WestchesterCounty. Shares closed down 36cents yesterday to $56.64. An As-tellas subsidiary, Astellas U.S.Holding Inc., announced Tues-day that it had filed a lawsuit inDelaware against OSI and its di-rectors to prevent them from ob-structing the attempted take-over. OSI’s board responded byissuing a news release askingshareholders to “take no action

at this time pending the reviewof the tender offer.”

U.S. Justice Departmentprobes bets against euro
