Rewind your this morning, you woke up – switched off your alarm clock – switched on the music system – go to the loo – brush your teeth – went to gym and came back – went for bath – switched on the heater - used juicer to make juice – toaster to toast – switched off your music system and switched on the TV – drove car to office – turned on the AC – computer and so on. Can you calculate the number of objects you have interacted? Can you calculate the number of tasks you have gone through?

Everyday, we interact with large number of objects and devices. We try to accomplish large number of tasks as well. During our conscious and unconscious interactions with these objects and tasks, we build experiences with them, leading it to sometimes frustrating and irritating or pleasurable and enjoyable. Have your heard yourself saying, “Oh! Come on, I can never learn how to switch on the timer of this washing machine”

This module aims to observe such sentences and experiences, understand people’s behavior and interaction with everyday objects and tasks. Students are asked to rethink the interactions and redesign them for meaningful and enjoyable experience.

The theme can be further divided into two parts; Students are allowed to choose any everyday object and redesign the interactions and

experiences with them Students are allowed to choose a task and design a new solution

According to Gillian Crampton Smith“In the same way that industrial designers have shaped our everyday life through objects

that they design for our offices and for our homes, interaction design is shaping our life with interactive technologies—computers, telecommunications, mobile phones, and so on. If I were to sum up interaction design in a sentence, I would say that it’s about shaping our everyday life through digital artifacts—for work, for play, and for entertainment”

This module is an attempt to design a series of meaningful interactions with everyday objects and tasks to shape our everyday life

Keywords Everyday objects & tasks Tangible Interaction User behavior Unconscious behavior (unconsciously tapping the table, rolling around a pen etc.) Observation Emotions & experiences Playful & Enjoyable Meaningful Prototyping

Thoughts Understand people’s behavior with everyday objects Understand people’s behavior with everyday tasks Observe them accomplishing the tasks Observe their interactions and experiences with everyday objects Observe conscious and unconscious behavior Do they behave different in different situations or mood? How & Why? Early stage and rapid prototyping Think beyond traditional ideas. E.g. a door bell using smell instead of sound Think beyond problem solving!! Add experiences to interactions Ideas designed for a particular mood/context
