The graph is an aid to opening sizes and should be read in conjunction with page 12

If your window installation requires rafters to be cut, this graph is a guide only as to where to place inside faces of both top and bottom trimmers/noggins. For example, a 7/9 window (740w x 980h) on a 35 degree pitch, a typical opening size between trimmers/noggins will be:

Length of window (h) + top measurement (x) + bottom measurement (y)

= 980 + 250 + 130 = 1360mmbetween inside faces

Prepare opening for the window.

Picture 1 - set out your rafters at the window width plus 70mm (35mm gap either side). E.G, for a 740mm width window, opening size = 810mm.Please refer to page 7 for opening sizes where top/bottom trimmer/noggins are to be sited if rafters are to be cut.

Picture 2 - cut the felt leaving 150mm either side of the opening.

Picture 3 ‑ fix the top and bottom separate horizontal window fixing battens (indicated with the number 1). Ideally, the bottom batten will be above your last row of tiles and will be a minimum gap of 1cm (sub diagram with ‘tick‘ mark - oran-ge is fixing batten).NB ‑ if you are working on a roof structure that is not counter-battened, please ignore orange coloured vertical batten.

The battens are set out at window length plus 70mm. E.G, a 980mm high window, the distance between the top edge of the bottom fixing batten and the bottom edge of the top fixing batten = 1050mm.

E = D! ‑ make sure the fixing batten is the same height as your tile batten.

Page 9: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

Page 13 of picture instructions

Picture 4 - using the saw, remove any tile battens that may be obstructing the opening.

Picture 5 - cut the remaining felt following the lines as indicated. Discard top and bottom felt pieces.

Picture 6 - cut 2 extra pieces of felt for the top and bottom of the window opening (pieces a & b) with measurements given and fix as per sub diagrams 1 & 4. Fold back all around the opening and lightly tack to the timber battens.

Cut shown above the window is for the moisture deflector supplied in the flashing kit (piece 1). Fix moisture deflector above the window under the felt and fix with tape on a slant across the whole window. Sub diagrams 2 & 3.

Picture 7 - open window as indicated using handle.

Picture 8 - remove side sash covers using release paddles underneath the outer cover as indicated with 1 in the picture and also pushing down at the same time as indicated with 2. Store safely.

Page 11: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

Page 15 of picture instructions

Picture 9 - put the window into the cleaning position as shown. Holding the window securely, remove the 2 ‘C‘ clips off the nipples as indicated with no.1 in sub diagram 1.

Bring the 2 steel support bars down in to the position as indicated with no.2 in the main picture and secure to sash frame using 2 elastic bands. This prevents the support bars from swinging around when manoeuvring the window back into position later on.

Picture 10 - remove window from the frame as indicated.

Picture 11 - turn the window round so that the handle is at the top and park to one side as indicated. Store the sash safely.

Page 12: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

Page 16 of picture instructions

Picture 12 - place the window frame into the opening and fix in place using 1 screw in each corner. Fix this screw into the ‘sliding‘ part of the bracket (sub diagram showing ‘A‘). NB do not fully secure at this stage as this allows for adjustment prior to the window being positioned correctly. Ensure bracket is sitting correctly on fixing batten as per sub-diagram with ‘tick‘ mark.

Picture 13 - guide the window back into the fra-me with the handle at the top facing outwards as indicated.

Top sub diagram - place the 2 white nylon pegs on the window into the black guide runners on the frame as indicated.

2nd and 3rd sub diagrams - keeping hold of the window remove the elastic bands from the steel supports and replace the steel supports into their original positions securing with the ‘C‘ clips as indicated.

Picture 14 - replace the bottom outer sash covers as indicated, sliding from the bottom upwards until you hear a click

Picture 15 - the window may need to be squared up in to the frame using the black plastic wedge supplied in the window accessories.

The wedge (if required) should be placed at the top of the window underneath the metal fixing bracket either on the left or right hand side as indicated in picture 15.

Picture 16 - the sides should also be squared up. This can often be adjusted by gently tapping the frame.

Picture 17 ‑ firmly fix all screws around the window frame. 2 per bracket

Unfold the plastic vapour barrier from around the window frame into the inside ready for fixing back to insulation

Picture 18 - release the previously lightly tacked felt from around the window. Fold this felt underneath the rubber gasket at the sides and from top to bottom. Secure to frame with suitable tape.

Page 15: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

Page 19 of picture instructions

Picture 19 - tape the 4 corners of the felt and secure to the window frame.

If required you can tape all the way round the window to completely make the window wind and moisture tight.

Picture 20 - NB top picture shows a WD window with insulation collar. Bottom picture shows a window without the collar on ‑ peel back flashing gasket and fix the bottom flashing piece first to the bottom of the window frame and screw in to place using the dimples on the flashing as indicated.

Note ‑ make sure the flashing has been tucked underneath the rubber gasket and is level with the top of the window frame. Position can be found by bending the small lugs on the bottom flashing piece over the frame.

Page 17: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

Page 21 of picture instructions

Picture 21 ‑ place the 2 sides of the flashing (k & k1) underneath the rubber gasket (also indicated on flashing as L (left) and R (right) in the water channels). NB this is for zie, mun and sds flashings only.

Connect the side flashings to the bottom flashing piece by placing under flashing gasket and locating the receiver grooves. Bend over the connectors as indicated in sub diagram 2.

Place the top part of the flashing to the side pieces and connect as indicated in sub diagram 4.

Picture 22 - fix the flashing kit into place using the clips/nails provided.

Note ‑ sno and snh flashing kits are different please refer to fitting instructions. These have soakers rather than side channels.

Page 22 of picture instructions

Picture 23 ‑ dress bottom flashing lead apron over tiles.

Side flashing ‑ fix all tiles around the window leaving max 1cm gap from the waterproofing fin on the side of the flashings as indicated in sub diagram b.

Top flashing ‑ leave 8cm between the water deflector and the bottom of the first tile as indicated in picture a.

Picture 24 - replace the top outer cover plate and secure from the inside with the red secure caps as indicated.

Note do not forget to do this as the outer cover will blow away in strong winds if not carried out!

Page 19: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

Picture 25 - for pvc windows only. Fix the plastic plasterboard guide plates into place. Wood windows do not have these.

Picture 26 - prepare the vapour barrier for installation as indicated in sub diagram 1

Picture 27‑ fix the vapour barrier to the insulation around the window using tape as indicated.

Note insulation should be fitted all around the window including the top and the bottom to avoid cold spots around the window.

Page 20: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

To adjust sash opening strength, the tension can be adjusted by altering the springs on the piston/dampers underneath the side sash arms. NB smaller windows do not have these.

Page 21: Designo R7 roof window - Written Fitting Instructions

Additional Notes

If the sash requires further adjustment, a 13mm nut can be found either side of the window underneath the side sash covers. These will move the sash whilst in the frame as required.

For opening sizes and placement of top and bottom trimmers/noggins, please refer to the zin diagram on page 7 of the instruction manual or call head office on 01788 558600
