    Introduction

    Lets get

    technical...

    Through the fibres of our

    existence, from the very

    beginning when humans were first

    learning to structure sentences,

detail was essential. Back towhen man created the first

    shelter he called home, detail

    was vital. When that design

    evolved and developed into master

    plans and mammoth constructions,

detail is important down to the

    elements that were smelted

together to create the metal for

    1 screw.

    Great design requires a

    fluency in multiple scales.

    Constant movement between a

    diversity of scales makes

    landscape architecture a

unique discipline - onewhich often requires an

    understanding from the

    regional strategic scale to

    the material scale of the

    detail. This project will

focus on the detail scale o

    the landscape project.

To assist us whilst exploring the

    design process, and detailing

    techniques and communication, a

    couple of speakers were brought

    in to trigger some influence.

    Many thanks to everyone invloved

in bringing them in, and many

thanks to all the speakers thatcame. It was a great influence,

and a sort of nudge in the right

    direction.

    White Light/White noise

A project that has been a

    major inspiration of mine

    due to its specific

    detailing (since first

    year) is White light/White

    Noise. It is light and

    sound installation that

    interacts with its users,

    made especially for the

    opening of the Athens

    summer olympics 2004. (1 of

    9 Temporary urban

    installations). It was

shown again a year later at

MIT University. I feel thisinstallation has a unique

    factor, in how it

    reacts/responds to how it

is being used, like it is a

    living and breathing

    structure.

    To create something

exceptional, your mindset mustbe relentlessly focused on the

    smallest detail.

    - Giorgio Armani

    What is Detail?

Details (noun)1. an individual or minute part; and

    item or particular

    2. particulars collectively; minutiae

    3. attention to or treatment of a

    subject in individual or minute

    parts: to postpone detail and

concentrate on a subject as a whole

    4. intricate, finely wrought

    decoration

    5. any small section of a larger

structure or whole, considered as a

unit.Random House dictionary, Random House, Inc. 2009

Why do we need it, how is it

    significant and what are thecatalysts?

Detail is essential as it is a guide

    for our imagined design or

installation to be manifested intoreality. It is the blueprint of

    everything that exists around us.

    I feel this installation, is

    specially significant because of its

unique catalyst factor that turns itfrom a public space with light and

noise, into an all around interactive

    installation.

    Since there is light, movement,

sound, texture, surface, andmaterial, it can respond and react to

    majority of people including the

blind and deaf. A feature that can

smartly interact with users requiresprecise detailing.

To properly understand use of land,

size difference, and relation, I puttogether a small paper and card model

    communicating the installation design

and how it interacts with users.

The model does not contain the

    exact amount of fiber optic

light stalks as there are in the

    real installation, but this is

    only a smaller representation.

    Lets gettechnical...

After thorough research, the skill, also known as Technical Drawing isprofessionally known around the worldas descriptive geometry. This isrequired in order to explore allangles, areas, and perspectives ofthe design to be implemented.Descriptive geomtry exploresviewpoints, which brings in other

design intervention andpossibilities, for example, how thelight impacts it from one side, compared to the other.

These 4 foot tall light stalks arearranged onto a 50x50 platform, that

contains speakers underneath. Thefiber optic stalks each contain 3 LED

units, and a micro processor chip, that senses touch and movement. When

there are users in the area, thelights will glow at about 40%, and as

they are interacted with, touched, and passed by, they begin to swayleft and right, increasing their

light to 100% and creating avibrating, white noise/white lightsound, that is also touch sensitive.

Through the experience, visitorsinteracted with the city-as both a

generators and manipulators of light, sound, and space.

The white noise made for the project is based on a

physical phenomenon called Johnson noise, where

noise arises from the thermal motions of electrons

in a resistor carrying current in an electronic

circuit. This field of white noise creates a unique

sound-scapein the city and masks out the noises from

the immediate context, forming a place of sonicrefuge within the bustling city.

    Standard experimental setup for

    the Michelson Interferometer.The Michelson interferometer

    produces interference fringes by

    splitting a beam of

    monochromatic light so that one

beam strikes a fixed mirror and

the other a movable mirror. When

the reflected beams are broughtback together, an interference

    pattern results. This is the

    precise system used to interfere

with light, and since only 1 arm

of the Michelson system is used

    to project and split light

    beams, it is less complicated.http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/HBASE/PHYOPT/michel.html

"White noise, like white light, is an aggregation, composed of all possible

sounds, just as white light encompasses all possible colors, The gentle

murmur of 'White Noise/White Light' forms a place of sonic refuge within the

bustling city," she says, noting that the unique sound-scape masks out other

    noises of the city.

"The city's sounds are recorded, remixed and curated into an interactive

landscape," she continues. "Overheard conversations are mixed in with readingsfrom Greek literature. The sound of traffic is juxtaposed with inaudible

frequencies in the city. ...Visitors and citizens can experience the city in a

new way, tracing its aural present and its recounted past."
