Determinations of George Gardner’s Compositae from Brazil, by D. J. N. Hind [Note: Several of the sheets marked ‘xxxx (bis)’ are merely duplicates within Kew’s herbarium Hookerianum, and without any form of labelling save what was written on the sheet. Only rarely did Gardner refer to a collection as ‘xxxx (bis)’ in his protologues of new taxa – his splits were usually marked as ‘xxxx/x’ on the sheet or variously numbered in his papers, usually as ‘xxxx. (x)’. On occasion, Gardner’s collections were types of other authors’ names, these sometimes provided with number splits (usually ‘xxxx (bis)’. In the column ‘Mixed sheets’ collections separated by ‘+’ signifies that one collection is mounted with one Gardner duplicate at K, the other with the other, etc.; collections separated by ‘,’ signifies that these are mounted on the same sheet. In the column ‘Type status and relevant notes’ it is assumed that material marked ‘Y’ in the ‘Type’ column is a type of the name provided; if the word ‘Type’ is present then the material is the type of the name provided under ‘Current determination’. No attempt has been made to lectotypify any of Gardner’s names during this exercise.] Summary statistics: Estimated total of Gardner’s collecting numbers: c. 6000 Total number of Gardner’s collecting numbers of Compositae: 798 (c. 13%) Total number of Gardner’s collecting numbers (including unnumbered collections) of Compositae: 807 Total number of Gardner’s collecting numbers representing types of Compositae: 443 (7.38%) Total number of Gardner’s collecting numbers representing types of Compositae at K: 428 (7.13%) Total number of Gardner Compositae specimens/sheets at K: 1480 Total number of Gardner’s specimens of Compositae representing types at K: 889 (60.07%) Total number of Gardner’s specimens of Compositae representing non-types: 591 (39.03%) Gardner No.
