The European Middle Ages (5001500 AD) The Middle Ages began after the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed The main cause of the fall of the Western Roman Empire was due to the invasions by the Germanic Tribes

Nov 297:22 PM

Kingdom of the Franks After the Roman Empire collapsed, small kingdoms developed all over Europe The Franks emerged as the most powerful kingdom and eventually controlled most of Western Europe

Christianity spread to the Franks because Clovis I converted in 496

The Roman Catholic church formed an alliance with the Franks; the Franks helped remove other Germanic tribes from Italy

Nov 297:41 PM

King Charlemagne (Charles the Great) Descendent of Clovis I In 771, Charlemagne took control over the Frankish Empire He extended the borders of the empire by defeating Muslims, & other Germanic tribes He reunited Western Europe for the first time since the Roman Empire

Made "Holy Roman Emperor" in 800 AD by Pope Leo III

After Charlemagne died his empire was eventually divided into 3 parts due to the Treaty of Verdun The grandson's of Charlemagne lost control of the empire and Europe lacked a central authority to control the land = Rise of Feudalism

Nov 298:01 PM

Development of European Feudalism After the Treaty of Verdun, Europe lacked political and military unity and was (again) threatened by invasions The invasions of the Vikings, Magyars, and Muslims caused widespread disorder and suffering in Europe Europeans lost faith in the central authority of the kings and turned to local landowners with their own armies for protection

The system of social and political control that developed during this time in Europe is known as Feudalism

Nov 298:16 PM

European FeudalismKing Claims ownership of the land, and grants (gives) land to important nobles (heads of strong families)

Nobles/Lords Accept land from the King, in return they promise to serve and protect the King when he asks

Knights/Vassals The knights/vassals also accepted land from either the King or Nobles/Lords, in return they promise military service

Peasants/Serfs They are allowed to live on the manor (land) and are given protection, in return they must work the land as farmers to support the person(s) who own the land

** Feudalism was a rigid social structure; Your role in society was based on your birth (NO SOCIAL MOBILITY)** DeCentralized form of government

Nov 298:35 PM

Manorialism Manorialism is the economic system of Feudalism The manor is the land that was controlled by the Lord Manorialism or the Manor System was based on the relationship between the Lord and the serfs It is a selfsufficient system; Everything that was needed to survive was found on the Lord's Manor (Estate)

ThreeField System Crop Rotation method used during the Middle Ages The farmland would be divided into three sections Each year 2 of the fields would be used to grow food and the other would be left "fallow" or unused Prevented the land from being overused
