FeudalismLandowning nobles governed and protected people in return for services such as fighting, farming, and craftsmanship.

Terms to Know:Fief - the land that the king gives to a lord/vassal in return for service.

Vassal - A noble (royalty) who serves someone of higher rank than they are.

• Lords ruled the manors.

• Peasants/serfs worked the land.

• Peasants were free-men that paid to work the land they lived on (like renting). Could leave the manor when they wished.

• Serfs worked the land but had to live on the manor and could not leave without permission.
