Beforetime in Israel, when d man went to inquire of God, thus he spake: Come, let us go to the Seer ; for he that is note called, a Prophet , was beforetime allied a Seer .”— 1st Samuel, 9 : 9. DEUTERONOMY. Moses says that the “ Lord came from Sinai, and from Seir he rose up to us ; he hath appeared from Mount Pharan, and with him thousands of saints. In his right hand a fiery law.” These words are in the very fullness of pregnancy, but surpass the obstetrical surgery of our dead churches to deliver. Seen in the series of the modern unfolding, the birth is easy from the ancient womb. Mount Sinai was the supposed habitation of Jehovah, as Jupiter of Olympus, and as of other Gods of Hills, Mountains and Groves. Jehovah was seen as a spirit through the mediumistic seership or opening of Moses. “ From Seir he rose up to us,” as a ghost or apparition, as Samuel to the medium of Endor. ' The note writer of the Vulgate admits the apparition of Jehovah as he “ appeared from Mount Pharan,” and cites Habakkuk as referring to this “ apparition” when he said that Godoa^from Teman,” &c., and also cites the highly poetic passage the psalm— “ The earthy was moved, and tbe heavens dflHtti^~the presence of the God oflSinai, at the presence of tVHfld of Israel.” How the manifestations were engineered, we havo seen in previous articles. The “ thousands of saints” were probably the many other spirits whom Moses saw witnessing the performance as manifested by the chief of the spiritual host. c “ God was accompanied by legions of angels,” says the an- notator of the Vulgate. Our angels of to-day have their gov - ernors and engineers as necessary to meet the exigences and conditions of orderly spirit intercourse. Our own circle is thus regulated from above. Whether “ a fiery law in his right hand” has reference to the lightning from the Sinai clouds where God dwelt, or whether the law was presented in fiery letters or words, as seen by our seeing mediums of to- day, may not be decided; but in either case, the new day is equal to the old. We have known mediums to give tests by reading “ fiery” letters projected from the spiritual world to the medium's vision— words in golden hues, and relating events of the spirit’s earth life ; and it is only the tutelary familiar spirit of Moses and his camp that our dead churches set up above all other Gods, old or new, in or out of the flesh. The Westminster Review, which denies the communi- cation between this and the other world, is yut powerfully combating the old theologies by showing, “ as all ancient rec- ords and traditions prove, the earliest rulers are regarded as divine personages. The maxims and commands they uttered during their lives are held sacred after their deaths, and are enforced by their divinely descended successors, who, in their turns, are promoted to the Pantheon of the race, there to be worshipped and propitiated along with their predecessors, the most ancient of whom is the Supreme God.” And this same Review (April 1857) further says : “ We feel ever more and more certain that fearless inquiry tends continually to give a firmer basis to all true Religion. The timid sectarian, alarmed at the progress of knowledge, obliged to abandon one by one the superstitions of his ancestors, and daily finding sundry of his cherished beliefs more and more shaken, secretly fears that all things may some day be explained ; and has a correspond- ing dread of Science; thus evincing the profoundest of all in- fidelity—tbe fear lest the truth be bad.” In a notice of “ cotemporary literature,” Dr. Bunsen is cited as illustrating “ the mental state of a Hebrew Seer by that of one under the influence of mesmeric sleep.” This is yielding the old ground and coming to the new land which modern Spirit- ualism has in possession. The difference of Mesmerism and Spiritualism being of spirits in and spirits out of the flesh, we may term it all mesmeric or all spiritualistic without being rid of the consecutive oneness of the phenomena. Our one-idea churches, who would destroy Spiritualism by Mesmerism, are rending the very holy of holies of the old temple ; for what is Mesmerism in tbe new is 3fesroerism in the old as well. Upon whatever horn of the dilemma the church may choose to fasten, it cannot clear its own house from the battering rams they would use for the demolishing of other temples. Their Devil will as surely manifest in their own house as in the house of their neighbors ; for the parallel phenomena of all spiritual manifestations or religions can only show modified phases from the universal law or fount of being. All appar- ent specialities can only have their relation to the great whole; and they only find the most of the kingdom of heaven who live it most We learn by the Westminster that the Rev. Rowland Wil- liams, in an “ extremely able work on Christianity and ^Hin- dooism, has “ become aware that the critical weapons which suffice to lay in ruins the structure of Vedic and Pauranic tra- ditions, may be turned against biblical history.” The same thing may be seen in Mrs. Childs’ “ Progress of Religious Ideas.” Indeed, the demented worship of the Bible as an in- fallible Word, is one of the most revolting of the dark clouds ' O of ignorance upon the 19th century Sun. In what does the “ Mesmeric Rod” differ from the Mosaic Rod, called the Rod of God ? The note writer to the Vulgate admits that Moses “ worked his miracles in the name of the Lord with a rod and we also see that in laying his hands upon Joshua, he meS' merized him for the work he was to do, and may be with the assistance of attendant spirits in rapport. We agree with Moses, that “ there is no other God like the God of the rightest,” whether in the Hebrew old clothes or in the shining garments of the modern light; but we should like to know what Lord it was who buried Moses so that “ do man hath known of his sepulchre unto this day and how he could write this account while yet in the flesh ? True, the modern critics deny the antiquity of the Pentateuch, and suppose it to be a comparatively recent production. It is a difficult matter to settle the question of its time, though for its supposed au- thority in fixing the time of other events it becomes a stumb- ling-block of weighty dimensions. We learn from the Review that Chevalier Bunsen, in his great work upon Egypt, traces “ the human race upon our planet upwards of twenty thousand years,” which makes a rent in the Mosaic coat of creation. Nor does the Westmin- ster, in other articles, fail to probe the assumptions of our old church theologies. In a review of ^schylus, it says : “ It "maylTe safely averred that there is not a single moral doctrine of all those thought distinctly Christian, that may not be clearly traced in the writings of the Greeks.” This matter is very fully elucidated in the work of Mrs. Child. . The pretensions of our so-called scientific men .are set forth by the Westminster on the following wise : “ Our savans are forever giving opinions on subjects which they cannot understand ; promulgating hypotheses founded on imagined facts ; drawing ideal pictures of nature, and reason- ing on them as truths; throwing aside realities for fictions, and hermetically sealing their eyes and closing their ears against the entrance of information, because information itself is supposed to clash with preconceived opinions, to interfere with hypotheses to which they are pledged, and, in fine, to damage their claim to the exclusive disposal of scientific knowledge; their object is to represent all matters as they would have them, without any reference to what they are.” This is a true picture. It is lamentable so often to see great learning and scientific formulas bounded by the narrowest vis- ion. “ For the observation of Nature,” says Goethe, “ a cer- tain simplicity and tranquility of mind is desirable. As soon as we have joined any narrow scientific sect, all true and sim- ple observation is over for us.” Yet the planes of the old theologies are narrower and more stupid still. We open our mouths and shut our eyes and swallow as manna from heaven whatever the Jewish priesthood have told us is suchi while we deny that the modern heavens can dispense it at all. Says Frederick Yon Raumer, “ In the traditions of no people do we find such frequent mention of the rewards and punish- ments of th& present life, and so little satisfactory or anima- ting allusion to a future state, as among the Jews. * * * Among no other people, again, is there so much said of a fu- ture worldly dominion, and with no one have such expectations been so little fulfilled.” u # * # The priests fashioned the conception of God, and attributed to him judgments, commands and actions at pleasure. The god in the burning bush, who commands Abra- ham to sacrifice his son, who wrestles with and lames Jacob, who orders the Israelites to rob the Egyptians of their gold and silver, who will exterminate every uncircumcised child, and every eater of leavened bread ; who requires to be instructed by men, and brought to reflection, repentance and the renunci- ation of ficrce wrath ; who will slay fifty thousand men for having accidentally seen the ark of the covenant, and de- stroyed forty-two children for having called Elisha whathe was, a ‘ bald-head,’ &c., &c. Such a god as this is far more an idol than the Olympian Zeus and his companions.” Of the Phoenicians or heathen neighbors whom Moses and his God would exterminate, though they have left us no holy record of themselves, but are judged in the holy record of their deadliest enemies—though they permitted human sacri- fices, as Abraham and Jepthawise, yet, says Von Raumer, “ in many valuable qualities they appear to have been greatly su- perior to the Jews.” “ Three important inventions,” says the Westminster, “ are on good grounds attributed to the Phoenicians; that of a stamped metal coinage, of the art of arithmetic, and of that which includes potentially almost all others—the wonder- working alphabet. How mighty, compared with the extent of the few barren miles of sea-coast that formed their territory, was the influence of this astonishing people on thc ancient world ; how brightly do the beams from this little radiant spot pierce through the ‘ blanket of the dark,’ in which its history is enveloped , and how gladly would the eye rest longer tl an the few scanty traces left of it^ existence will admit of, on a people which, even in that rude period, built its greatness, not on force and bloodshed, but on the beneficial triumphs of in- dustry and genius.”— [ Review , Jan. 1849. In the Oct. No. of the Review , 1850, is an article on for the dark infidelity and cold materialism that threaten the utter destruction of the religious life in a large portion of the people, is to give them a living faith—true to the conscience, true to the intellect, trtte to the realized science of the age. The Spiritualist is professedly struggling for the realization of “ Septenary Institutions,” very broad and deep in the sweep of this object, amidst the taunts of orthodoxy, and the execra- the old theologies. Moses sought to put do\*\n image-worship, but failed. The Israelites were content to worship God under the name of Jehovah; but they said, “ Show us the symbol of God to which we have been accustomed and then Aaron made for them a “ golden calf.” Moses dashed it to pieces, but was himself subsequently— on the outbreak of pestilence, when (a3 is usual in times of epidemics) the people imagined them- selves bitten by something venomous— compelled, in order to check a morbid tendency to despondency, to set up a brazen serpent — the Triphon of the JEg^ptians, or religious emblem of the season, when the sun was in Scorpio. Had the sun been in Aries, he would doubtless have set up a ram, the Ammon- Re of Egypt, and subsequently Vie symbol of Jupiter Amnaon in Crete.” j The article in the Review wifs called forth to meet the as- sumptions of those who would make the Sabbath a supersti- tious day of observance ; and he shows, as many others have shown, that the claims set up by priestcraft and credulity are utterly worthless. The Westminster is exceedingly able and learned in its articles against the old theologies which are so persistently canonized in our dead churches. Whoever reads it for the last ten years will have many cobwebs swept out of his mind. In the Jan. No., 1851, is an article on the “ Progress of the Intellect, as exemplified in the Keligious Development of the Greeks and Hebrews. By Robert William Mackay.” From this article we learn that Mr. Mackay holds that the original God of the Israelites was no other than the nature- God, El or Ilus, worshipped in Arabia, Palestine and Phoeni- cia, with licentious and sanguinary rites, under the double as- pect of Baal and Moloch ; and that the purer worship of Je- hovah, inculcated by the prophets, and established by Josiah, was a religious reformation among the Hebrews, generated by the growth of civilization consequent on a large commercial intercourse with foreign nations, and contemporaneous with a movement of religious reform which took place throughout Asia, about 700 B. C. In Mr. Mackay's opinion, the account of the Passover as it now stands, is the veil which the purer conceptions of later Hebrews cast over the ancient custom of sacrificing first-born children to the blood-thirsty El ; the mas- sacre of three thousand Israelites, represented in Exodus as retributive, was probably sacrificial— a huge offering to the same demon, the rather that Aaron, the leader in the calf-wor- ship, was not involved in the same destruction ; the command by which God is said to have tempted Abraham; the vow of Jeptha; thc slaughter of the seven descendants of Saul, whereby David sought to propitiate his God and avert a fam- ine, are indications that human sacrifices were familiar to the Hebrews ; above all, that “ passing of children through the fire,” recorded of so many kings, and indignantly denounced by the prophets as a practice habitual to the nation, ib most probably to be interpreted as an actual immolation.” A living church must have something better for its basis than this old savageism ; nor is the immolation of the seven sons by David of a higher plane than the homicide sacrifices to Moloch. Our consecrated popular theology is of so damnable a nature that even Dr. Chalmers, in the “ North British Re- view,” Feb. 1847, cited by the Westminster, has to say, “ as things stand at present, our creeds and confessions have become effete, and the Bible a dead letter.” Upon this and the confession of the Bishop of Oxford of the complete death of the churches, the Oct. No. of the West- minster, 1851, says : “ When such is the confessed condition of the modern churches, dissenting aud orthodox, it is not sur- prising that the minds of all earnest men are beginning to look forward to great and vital changes in the existing organiza- tions of all Christian churches, and that a new literature is gradually growing up to represent a new religious philosophy.” * * * “ The popular creed of Christendom is credible only to an ignorant and degraded population; and this is, of course, the reason why the clergy in all countries are striving as if in their death-struggle, to maintain their control over the education of the people. In England one half of the people can neither read nor write; and in many of our agricultural dis- tricts, studded with churches, the peasantry are as savage, su- perstitious and illiterate as those of the Campagna or the Jiasque provinces of Spain. * * The only true remedy In the July No. of the Westminster, 1851, is a review of “ The Creed of Christendom ; its Foundations and Superstruc- ture. By William Rathbone Greg.” It appears that Mr. Greg is one of the many thousands in search of the resurrec- tion out of the old theologies. How full and gushing opens the fount of the new unfolding to all these parched and dying souls of the past ! Thanks to the Most High, and the good angels, for this living fountain, and “ ho! every one that thirsts, come ye to the waters!” We have now sketched twelve numbers, which the lovers of mystery may find to correspond to the twelve tribes of Israel, to the twelve signs of the Zodiac, or any other corres- pondence they please in the mystery of the Word. Before we pass over the Jordan with the fillibuster Joshua, we may farther bridge our way by extracts from that rapidly increas- ing class of thinkers who are sick unto death in the confine- ment of the ancient tombs, and are making great efforts to come out of their graves and to appear unto many in whiter raiment than the dead past can furnish. Says Chevalier Bun- sen in the Westminster, “ Where is the power able to reclaim a world, which, if it be faithless, is become so under untenable and ineffective ordinances 7— which, if it is in a state of con- fusion, has become confused by those who have spiritually guided it? Armies may subdue liberty, but armies cannot conquer ideas ; much less can Jesuits and Jesuitical princi- ples restore religion, or superstition revive faith. I deny the prevalence of a destructive aud irreligious spirit in the hearts of the immense majority of the people. I believe that the world wants, not less, but more religion. But however this be, I am firmly convinced that God governs the world, and that he governs it by the eternal ideas of truth and justioe engraved on our conscience and reason. * * Let us, then, give up all riotion§"ofsfinding any other basis— all attempts to prop up faith by effete forms and outward things ; let us cease to combat reason, whenever it contradicts conventional forms and formularies.” He would have a Christianity based upon Reason and Conscience, by proving all things and holding fast what is good— a common-sense religion, efficient for the eleva - tion of humanity, and not thc soul-destroying theologies of a worthless hireling priesthood— a religion that shall do the word in the love of the neighbor, by breaking every yoke. c. b. p. , For the Spiritual Age. We have all felt, when looking above us into the atmos- phere, that there was an infinity of space which we could not explore. When I look into man’s spirit, and see there the germs of an immortal life, I feel more deeply that an infinity lies hid beyond what I see. In the idea of duty, which springs up in every human heart, I discern a law more sacred and boundless than gravitation, which binds the soul to a more glorious universe than that to which attraction binds the body, and which is to endure though the laws of physical nature pass away. Every moral sentiment, every intellectual sction, is to me a hint, a prophetic sign, of a spiritual power to be expanded forever; just a faint ray from a distant star is sig- nificant of unimaginable splendor.— Channing. Our Lord God doth as a printer who setteth the type back- wards. We shall see the print yonder in the life to come. In the meantime we must have patience .— Martin Luther. For the Spiritual A|l> THE CHARACTER OF SPIRITS. Editors of the Age :— As your valuable and much (ead paper seems to be a medium for thought, from many grades of mind, I beg the favor of expressing a few ideas, and of an- swering and asking a few questions through its mediumship, upon Spiritualism. Anti-Spiritualism says many hard things concering it. One charges it with a tendency to destroy the “ integrity of man and the purity of w om ananother regards it “ as a system of faith, an awful blunder and delusion,”“ The spasmodic grasping of drowning men at straws”— “ Hie anxious chasing of will-o-the-wisps for light and guidance by minds self-exiled from the light of heaven and lost in darkness and doubt.” Another acknowledges the phenomena, but says they are from spirits damned, wicked demons, lying and un- clean spirits, etc. Now I would like to ask, in the name of inquiring humani- ty, if those very assertions do not imply there is and ever has been a lack of sufficient knowledge concerning the human soul’s immortal destiny ? To some the Bible may be abso- lute truth and a revelation containing all that is sufficient or needed for their faith and practice; while to others it is noth- ing more, nor ever can be, than an imperfect history of ancient times, laws, customs,1mediums, and communications. We do not differ thus widely in our beliefs from choice; nor have we been self-creative, assuming organisms eo varying, but are rath- er the natural result of a great Positive Mind, whose oomplex embodiment has produced beauty in variety, order in changes, use in opposites, and harmony through seeming in inhanno- nies, evincing a wisdom beyond man’s present defined under- standing. As to a person’s identity, character, condition, and happi- ness, it appears to me his or her own story, appearance, and disposition should be the best accepted evidence. Now if all the spirits manifesting themselves, who have proved their identity, are so sadly, lamentably, and awfully situated, as to be “ self-exiled from the light of heaven,” “ spirits damned,” “ wicked demons,” “ lying and unclean spirits,” who shall be able to determine what portion of professing Christendom have been or will be saved from a like condition ? From the investigations and experience of the last six years, I am led to the incontrovertible conclusion that professing Christians stand no better chance escaping those conditions than outsiders, from the fact that equal numbers have mani- fested themselves, proved their identity, showing no higher at- tainments, greater wisdom, or happier condition than those who were their equals here in point of intellectual and moral development; who had never made Christianity or the church a stand-point from which to guide their acts. I will give one case as proof to be added to the thousands which have already been given, and close. * My grandfather on my father’s side passed to the spirit-' world some thirty years ago. While in the earth-form, he was ever considered, as I understand, a man of superior men- tal acquirements, a physician of much skill, moral and re- spected. He was a soldier in the revolutionary struggles of our country, and also one in the cause of Christ, being a mem- ber of the Methodist Episcopal church. A few weeks since he proved to our family his presence beyond a doubt, through, a heating medium, who was a stranger to us until a few months ago, and knew nothing of our predecessors. His spirit con- trolled the medium (Isaac Vaughn) in such a way as to as- sume his form, which was very stooping, and shook his whole system as with a shaking palsy, a disease he had a few jears before he left the old form. Though seeming inconsistencies do sometimes loom up and obscure for awhile our spiritual horizon, and fierce and sickly simoons sweep by our souls’ moorings, yet can we say of a truth our faith is firmly anchored in those truths which come wafted back from the spirit-world on the wings of angel friends;— truths because we have proved them experimentally, — truths because they bring a calm, holy, reciprocal corro- pondence to the interiors of all those who accept them __ truths because they accord with the principles laid down in the great Book of Nature. Trouble. —As the sun converts clouds into a glorious dnt- pery, firing them with gorgeous hues, and draping the whole horizon with its glorious costume, and writing victory in fiery colors along the vanquished front of every cloud, so sometimes a radiant heart lets forth its hope upon his sorrow, and all the blackness flies : and troubles trooped to appal seem to crowd around as a triumphal procession, following in the steps of a victor .— Henry Ward Beccher. There is one consolation attending persecution. It often exalts the spirit of the sufferer, and often covers with honor those whom it had destined to shame. Providence teaches us the doctrine of retribution very touchingly in the fact, that fu- ture ages guard with peculiar reverence the memories of who, in their own times, contemned, abhorred, hunted like wild beasts, and destrp^Tby fire or sword, for their ^ ity to truth.— Channinuf

W hether “ a fiery law in his right hand” has reference to the lightning from the Sinai clouds where God dwelt, o r whether the law was presented in fiery letters or words, as seen by our seeing mediums o f to­day, may not be dec id ed ; bu t in either case, the new day is equal to the old. W e have known mediums to give tests by reading “ fiery” le tte rs projected from the spiritual world to the medium 's vision— words in golden hues, and rela ting events of the spirit’s ea rth life ; and it is only the tu te la ry fam iliar spirit o f Moses and his camp th a t our dead churches set up above all other Gods, old o r new, in or out o f the flesh.

T he W estm inster R eview , which denies the communi­ca tion between th is and the other world, is yut powerfully com bating the old theologies by showing, “ as all ancient rec­ords and trad itions prove, the earliest ru lers are regarded as d ivine personages. The maxims and commands they u ttered during the ir lives a re held sacred afte r th e ir deaths, and are enforced by the ir divinely descended successors, who, in their tu rns, are promoted to the Pantheon o f the race, there to be worshipped and prop itia ted along with the ir predecessors, the m ost ancient of whom is the Supreme G od.” A nd th is same R ev iew (A pril 1857) fu rthe r says : “ W e feel ever more andmore certain th a t fearless inqu iry tends continually to give a firm er basis to a ll tru e Religion. The tim id sectarian, alarm ed at the progress o f knowledge, obliged to abandon one by one th e superstitions o f his ancestors, and daily finding sundry of his cherished beliefs more and more shaken, secretly fears th a t all things may some day be explained ; and has a correspond­ing dread o f Science; thus evincing the profoundest o f a ll in­fidelity— tbe fear lest the tru th be bad.”

In a notice o f “ cotem porary litera tu re ,” D r. Bunsen is cited as illustrating “ the mental sta te o f a Hebrew Seer by th a t o f one under the influence o f mesmeric sleep.” This is yielding the old ground and coming to the new land which modern S p irit­ualism has in possession. The difference o f M esmerism and Spiritualism being of sp irits in and spirits out o f the flesh, we may term i t all mesmeric or all spiritualistic w ithout being rid of the consecutive oneness o f the phenomena. O ur one-idea churches, who would destroy Spiritualism by Mesmerism, a re rending the very holy o f holies o f the old tem ple ; for w hat is Mesmerism in tb e new is 3fesroerism in the old as well.

U pon w hatever horn o f the dilem m a the church m ay choose to fasten, i t cannot clear its own house from the battering rams they would use fo r the dem olishing o f o ther temples. Their Devil will as su rely m anifest in the ir own house as in the house o f their neighbors ; for the parallel phenom ena o f all spiritual m anifestations o r religions can only show modified phases from the universal law or fount o f being. A ll appar­ent specialities can only have the ir relation to the g rea t whole; and they only find the most o f the kingdom o f heaven who live it most

We learn by the W estm inster that the Rev. Rowland Wil­liams, in an “ extremely able work on Christianity and ^Hin- dooism, has “ become aware that the critical weapons which

suffice to lay in ruins the structu re of V edic and P au ran ic tra ­ditions, m ay be turned against biblical h isto ry .” The same thing may be seen in M rs. Childs’ “ P rogress o f Religious Ideas.” Indeed, the demented worship o f the B ible as an in­fallible W ord, is one o f the most revolting o f the dark clouds' Oo f ignorance upon the 19 th century Sun. In what does the “ M esmeric R od” differ from the Mosaic Rod, called the Rod o f God ? The note w riter to the Vulgate adm its th a t Moses “ worked his miracles in the name o f the Lord with a rod and we also see th a t in laying his hands upon Joshua , he meS' merized him for the work he was to do, and may be with the assistance o f a ttendan t sp irits in rapport.

W e agree with Moses, th a t “ there is no other God like the God o f the righ test,” whether in the Hebrew old clothes or in the shining garm ents o f the modern l ig h t ; but we should like to know w hat Lord it was who buried Moses so th a t “ d o man hath known o f his sepulchre unto this day and how he could w rite this account while y e t in the flesh ? T rue, the modern critics deny the an tiqu ity of the P entateuch , and suppose it to be a com paratively recent production. I t is a difficult m atter to settle the question o f its time, though for its supposed a u ­thority in fixing the tim e o f other events i t becomes a stum b­ling-block o f weighty dimensions.

W e learn from the Review th a t Chevalier Bunsen, in his g rea t work upon E gypt, traces “ the hum an race upon our p lanet upw ards o f tw enty thousand years,” which makes a ren t in the Mosaic coat o f creation. N or does the W estm in ­ster, in other articles, fail to probe the assum ptions o f our old church theologies. In a review o f ^ s c h y lu s , it says : “ I t

"maylTe safely averred th a t there is not a single m oral doctrine o f all those thought distinctly C hristian, th a t m ay not be clearly traced in the w ritings o f the G reeks.” T his m atte r is very fully elucidated in the work o f Mrs. Child. .

The pretensions o f our so-called scientific men .are set forth by the W estm inster on the following wise :

“ O ur savans are forever giving opinions on subjects which they cannot understand ; prom ulgating hypotheses founded on im agined facts ; draw ing ideal pictures o f natu re , and reason­ing on them as t r u th s ; throw ing aside realities for fictions, and herm etically sealing the ir eyes and closing the ir ears against the entrance of inform ation, because information itself is supposed to clash w ith preconceived opinions, to in terfere w ith hypotheses to which they are pledged, and, in fine, to dam age their claim to the exclusive disposal o f scientific know ledge; the ir object is to represent all m atters as they would have them , w ithout any reference to w hat they are.”

This is a true picture. I t is lam entable so often to see great learning and scientific form ulas bounded by the narrowest vis­ion. “ F o r the observation of N a tu re ,” says Goethe, “ a cer­tain sim plicity and tranqu ility o f mind is desirable. A s soon as we have joined any narrow scientific sect, a ll true and sim­ple observation is over for us.” Y et the planes of the old theologies are narrow er and more stupid still. W e open our mouths and shut our eyes and swallow as m anna from heaven w hatever the Jew ish priesthood have told us is suchi while we deny th a t the modern heavens can dispense it a t all. Says F rederick Y on R aum er, “ In the trad itions of no people do we find such frequent mention o f the rew ards and punish­ments o f th& present life, and so little satisfactory or anim a­ting allusion to a fu ture state , as among the Jew s. * * *Among no other people, again, is there so much said o f a fu­tu re worldly dominion, and with no one have such expectations been so little fulfilled.”

u # * # T he priests fashioned the conception of God,and attribu ted to him judgm ents, commands and actions a t pleasure. The god in the burning bush, who commands A b ra ­ham to sacrifice his son, who w restles w ith and lames Jacob , who orders the Israelites to rob the E gyptians o f th e ir gold and silver, who will exterm inate every uncircumcised child, and every ea ter o f leavened bread ; who requ ires to be instructed by men, and brought to reflection, repentance and the renunci­ation of ficrce w rath ; who will slay fifty thousand men forhaving accidentally seen the a rk o f the covenant, and de­stroyed forty-two children for having called E lisha w hat hewas, a ‘ bald-head,’ &c., &c. Such a god as this is far morean idol than the Olym pian Zeus and his com panions.”

O f the Phoenicians or heathen neighbors whom Moses and his God would exterm inate, though they have left us no holy record o f themselves, b u t are judged in the holy record of the ir deadliest enemies— though they perm itted human sacri­fices, as A braham and Jep thaw ise , yet, says Von R aum er, “ in many valuable qualities they appear to have been greatly su­perior to the Jew s.”

“ Three im portant inventions,” says the W estm inster, “ are on good grounds attribu ted to the Phoenicians; th a t o f a stam ped m etal coinage, o f the a r t o f arithm etic, and o f th a t which includes potentially alm ost all o thers— the wonder­w orking alphabet. How m ighty, compared w ith the ex ten t o f the few barren miles o f sea-coast th a t formed the ir territo ry , was the influence o f this astonishing people on thc ancient world ; how brightly do the beams from this little rad ian t spot pierce through th e ‘ b lanket o f the dark ,’ in which its h istory is enveloped , and how gladly would the eye rest longer tl an

In the same article, tracing , the parallel o f E gyptian and early H ebrew worship, the wriUtfy»ys, “ Im age emblems o f deity grew out of the sacrifice o f living.emblems, and became idola­try . Moses sought to pu t do\*\n im age-worship, bu t failed. The Israelites were content to worship God under the nam e of J e h o v a h ; bu t they said, “ Show us the symbol o f God to which we have been accustomed and then A aron made for them a “ golden calf.” Moses dashed it to pieces, but was him self subsequently— on the outbreak o f pestilence, when (a3 is usual in tim es o f epidemics) the people imagined them ­selves bitten by som ething venomous— compelled, in order to check a morbid tendency to despondency, to set up a brazen serpent— the Triphon o f the JEg^ptians, or religious emblem of the season, when the sun was in Scorpio. H ad the sun been in A ries, he would doubtless have set up a ram , the A m m on- R e o f E gyp t, and subsequently Vie symbol o f J u p ite r Amnaon in C rete.” j

The artic le in the R eview wifs called forth to meet the as­sumptions o f those who would m ake the Sabbath a supersti­tious day o f observance ; and he shows, as many others have shown, th a t the claims set up by priestcraft and credulity are u tterly worthless. The W estm inster is exceedingly able and learned in its articles against the old theologies which are so persistently canonized in our dead churches. W hoever reads it for the last ten years will have many cobwebs swept out o f his mind.

In the J a n . N o., 1851, is an artic le on the “ P rogress o f the In te llec t, as exemplified in the Keligious Developm ent o f the G reeks and Hebrews. B y R obert W illiam M ackay.” From th is artic le we learn th a t M r. M ackay holds th a t the original God o f the Israelites was no o ther than the nature- God, E l or Ilus, worshipped in A rab ia , P alestine and Phoeni­cia, w ith licentious and sanguinary rites, under the double as­pect of B aal and Moloch ; and th a t the purer worship of J e ­hovah, inculcated by the prophets, and established by Josiah , was a religious reform ation among the Hebrews, generated by the grow th o f civilization consequent on a large commercial intercourse w ith foreign nations, and contemporaneous with a movement of religious reform which took place throughout A sia, about 700 B . C. In M r. M ackay's opinion, the account o f the Passover as i t now stands, is the veil which the purer conceptions o f la te r Hebrew s cast over the ancient custom of sacrificing first-born children to the blood-thirsty E l ; the mas­sacre of three thousand Israelites, represented in Exodus as retribu tive, was probably sacrificial— a huge offering to the same demon, the ra th e r th a t Aaron, the leader in the calf-wor- ship, was not involved in the same destruction ; the command by which God is said to have tem pted A b ra h a m ; the vow of J e p th a ; thc slaughter o f the seven descendants o f Saul, whereby D avid sought to prop itia te his God and a v e rt a fam ­ine, are indications th a t human sacrifices were fam iliar to the Hebrews ; above all, th a t “ passing of children through the fire,” recorded o f so m any kings, and indignantly denounced by the prophets as a practice habitual to the nation, ib most probably to be in terpreted as an actual im m olation.”

A living church m ust have something better for its basis than this old savageism ; nor is the immolation of the seven sons by David o f a higher plane than the homicide sacrifices to Moloch. O ur consecrated popular theology is o f so dam nable a natu re th a t even D r. Chalmers, in the “ N o rth B r itish R e ­view ,” Feb. 1847, cited by the W estm inster, has to say, “ as things stand a t present, our creeds and confessions have become effete, and the B ib le a dead le tter.”

Upon this and the confession o f the Bishop o f Oxford o f the complete death o f the churches, the O ct. No. o f the W est­m inster, 1851, says : “ W hen such is the confessed conditiono f the modern churches, dissenting aud orthodox, it is not sur­prising th a t the minds o f all earnest men are beginning to look forw ard to g rea t and v ita l changes in the existing organiza­tions o f a ll C hristian churches, and th a t a new litera tu re is g radually growing up to represent a new religious philosophy.”

* * * “ The popular creed of Christendom is credibleonly to an ignorant and degraded population ; and this is, of course, the reason w hy the clergy in all countries a re striving as i f in the ir death-struggle, to m aintain the ir control over the education o f the people. In E ngland one h a lf o f the people can neither read nor w rite ; and in many o f our agricu ltu ral dis­tric ts, studded w ith churches, the peasantry are as savage, su­perstitious and illitera te as those o f the Campagna or the Jiasque provinces o f Spain. * * The only tru e remedy

In the J u ly No. o f the W estm inster, 1851 , is a review o f “ The Creed o f Christendom ; its Foundations and Superstruc­ture. B y W illiam R athbone G reg .” I t appears th a t M r. G reg is one o f the many thousands in search o f the resurrec­tion out o f the old theologies. How full and gushing opens the fount o f the new unfolding to all these parched and dying souls o f the past ! Thanks to the M ost H igh, and the good angels, for th is living fountain, and “ h o ! every one th a t thirsts, come ye to the w a te rs!”

W e have now sketched twelve numbers, which the lovers o f m ystery m ay find to correspond to the twelve tribes of Israel, to the twelve signs o f the Zodiac, or any other corres­pondence they please in the m ystery o f the W ord. Before we pass over the Jo rd an w ith the fillibuster Jo shua , we m ay farther bridge our way by ex tracts from th a t rap id ly increas­ing class o f th inkers who are sick unto death in the confine­m ent o f the ancient tombs, and are m aking g rea t efforts to come out o f the ir graves and to appear unto m any in w hiter raim ent than the dead past can furnish. Says Chevalier B u n ­sen in the W estm inster, “ W here is the power able to reclaim a world, which, i f it be faithless, is become so under untenable and ineffective ordinances 7— which, i f i t is in a sta te o f con­fusion, has become confused by those who have spiritually guided i t? A rm ies m ay subdue liberty , bu t armies cannot conquer ideas ; much less can Je su its and Jesu itica l princi­ples restore religion, or superstition revive faith. I deny the prevalence of a destructive aud irreligious sp irit in the hearts o f the immense m ajority o f the people. I believe th a t the world wants, not less, bu t more religion. B u t however this be, I am firmly convinced th a t God governs the world, and th a t he governs it by the eternal ideas o f tru th and justioe engraved on our conscience and reason. * * L e t us, then,give up all riotion§"ofsfinding any other basis— all attem pts to prop up faith by effete forms and outw ard things ; let us cease to combat reason, whenever it contradicts conventional forms and form ularies.” H e would have a C hristian ity based upon R eason and Conscience, by proving all things and holding fast w hat is good— a common-sense religion, efficient for the eleva­tion o f hum anity , and not thc soul-destroying theologies of a worthless hireling priesthood— a religion th a t shall do the word in the love o f the neighbor, by breaking every yoke. c. b. p.

paper seems to be a medium for thought, from many grades of mind, I beg the favor o f expressing a few ideas, and of an­swering and asking a few questions through its mediumship, upon Spiritualism . A nti-Spiritualism says m any hard things concering it. One charges i t w ith a tendency to destroy the “ in tegrity o f man and the pu rity o f w o m a n a n o th e r regards it “ as a system o f faith , an awful b lunder and delusion,”— “ The spasmodic grasping of drowning men a t straw s”— “ H ie anxious chasing o f will-o-the-wisps for ligh t and guidance by m inds self-exiled from the ligh t o f heaven and lo st in darkness and doubt.” A nother acknowledges the phenom ena, but says they are from sp irits dam ned, wicked demons, lying and un­clean spirits, etc.

Now I would like to ask, in the nam e o f inqu iring humani­ty , i f those very assertions do no t im ply th e re is and ever has been a lack o f sufficient knowledge concerning the human soul’s im m ortal destiny ? To some the B ible m ay be abso­lu te tru th and a revelation containing a ll th a t is sufficient or needed for the ir fa ith and p ra c tic e ; while to o thers it is noth­ing more, nor ever can be, than an im perfect h isto ry o f ancient times, laws, custom s,1 mediums, and com munications. We do not differ thus widely in our beliefs from cho ice; nor have we been self-creative, assuming organism s eo varying, b u t are rath­er the na tu ra l resu lt of a g rea t P ositive M ind, whose oomplex embodiment has produced beauty in varie ty , o rder in changes, use in opposites, and harm ony through seeming in inhanno- nies, evincing a wisdom beyond m an’s presen t defined under­standing.

A s to a person’s identity , character, condition, and happi­ness, i t appears to me his o r her own story, appearance, and disposition should be the best accepted evidence. Now if all the spirits m anifesting themselves, who have proved their iden tity , are so sadly, lam entably, and awfully situated, as to be “ self-exiled from the ligh t o f heaven,” “ spirits damned,” “ wicked demons,” “ lying and unclean spirits ,” who shall be able to determ ine w hat portion o f professing Christendom have been or will be saved from a like condition ?

From the investigations and experience of the last six years,I am led to the incontrovertible conclusion th a t professing C hristians stand no better chance escaping those conditions th a n outsiders, from the fact th a t equal num bers have mani­fested themselves, proved the ir iden tity , showing no higher at­tainm ents, g rea ter wisdom, o r happier condition than those who were the ir equals here in point o f in te llectual and moral developm ent; who had never made C hristian ity or the church a stand-poin t from which to guide the ir acts. I will give one case as proof to be added to the thousands which have already been given, and close.* M y grandfather on m y fa ther’s side passed to the spirit-'

world some th irty years ago. W hile in the earth-form, he was ever considered, as I understand, a man o f superior men­ta l acquirem ents, a physician o f much skill, moral and re­spected. H e was a soldier in the revolutionary struggles of our country, and also one in the cause o f Christ, being a mem­ber o f the M ethodist Episcopal church. A few weeks since he proved to our fam ily his presence beyond a doubt, through, a heating medium, who was a stranger to us un til a few months ago, and knew nothing o f our predecessors. H is spirit con­trolled the medium (Isaac V aughn) in such a way as to as­sume his form, which was very stooping, and shook his whole system as with a shaking palsy, a disease he had a few jears before he left the old form.

Though seeming inconsistencies do sometimes loom up and obscure for awhile our sp iritua l horizon, and fierce and sickly simoons sweep by our souls’ moorings, y e t can we say of a tru th our faith is firmly anchored in those tru th s which come wafted back from the spirit-w orld on the wings of angel frien d s;— tru ths because we have proved them experimentally, — truths because they bring a calm, holy, reciprocal corro-pondence to the interiors o f all those who accept them __tru th s because they accord with the principles laid down in the g rea t Book o f N atu re . There is one consolation attending persecution. I t often exalts the spirit of the sufferer, and often covers with honor those whom it had destined to shame. L E T U S G O F O E W A E D !I t must be obvious, to the most superficial observer, that the

modern spiritual movement, as a whole, is now passing the ordeal of an unusually severe criticism. A “ crisis”— a veritable “ day of judgment”—” ha8 come U pon it, and upon all its professed adherents. I t is arraigned before the tribunal of public opinion, and a verdict on its merits and demerits is u r­gently pressed. All the accusations that ignorance, prejudice, bigotry and malice can invent are preferred against it.’ Frail Peters and perfidious Judases among its professed friends are swearing that they know nothing in its favor, or are betraying i t to its enemies, sometimes for even less than th irty pieces of silver— committing moral suicide a t the same time, and rush­ing headlong each “ to his own place.” Besides these, its real friends are submitting all pretensions in its name to a specially rigid scrutiny.

This is well. W ithin the past eight years, there has been a wide sowing of seed, both good and bad. Now a harvest time has come, and we are called upon to discriminate between wheat and tares— between nutritious grain and noxious weeds, chaff and stubble. The former must be garnered for the soul’s growth and progress— the latter burned in the unquenchable fire of truth. This is the true “ judgment,” or discrimina­tion.

Every earnest soul— earnest for the right and the good— welcomes such a day. I t fearlessly brings forth all its opin­ions, all its acts, all its most secret desires, even, and submits them to the fire which is to try every man’s work. I t desires to cherish nothing that “ can’t stand the fire.” True Spirit­ualism has nothing to fear from such an ordeal. I ts positive facts, its eternal principles, its pure and elevating practical tendencies, will only shine out the more conspicuously in the ‘en d ; while the rubbish of error, folly, fanaticism, sensualism, and all forms of pseudo-Spiritualism will be distinguished and in time consumed.

W e have often, in past years, felt and expressed apprehensions that the external or phenomenal phase of Spiritualism was ex­tending too rapidly— more rapidly than the internal, or true spirituality. W here this is the case, and people throw off the mental and normal restraints which popular opinion has im­posed upon them, before they have attained a sufficient degree o f intellectual and spiritual development to guide themselves in the paths of wisdom, they will naturally run into mistakes, delusions, fanaticisms and disorders. A powerful reaction against Spiritualism is the consequence. I t would be far more agreeable to our human predilections, were all to continue un­der healthful external restraints until they have become capa­ble of being a law of wisdom unto themselves. B u t such is not universally the case. This, however, is an evil which will correct itself in the long ru n ; and it is doubtless a lesser evil than tho ignorance, slavery and imbecility which, with the masses, are its almost necessary alternative. W hile it is true that none are J i t for freedom, either civil, mental, spiritual or affectional, till they bave wisdom to use i t ; yet i t is also true that numbers wiU never learn how to use freedom u n ti l they h a v e it— m a n y , even, not u n til they have a b u s e d it .

Progress, then, must have its stages of re-action. These are inevitable, human nature being as it is. “ Offences must come,” and those by whom they come must and do bear the “ woes” which are consequent upon them. In our late ex­tended tour, we visited places, and learned of others, where, a few years since, phenomenal Spiritualism, and a sort of super­ficial philosophy called spiritual, were exceedingly popular— they ran over the community like a prairie fire, sweeping al­most everything before them. Various follies and excesses fol­lowed ;— tbe opposition, of course, had not the candor to distin­guish between Spiritualism and its unwise professors ;— a disas­trous ro-action was the consequence;—and now, in some quar­ters, it is almost impossible to obtain a hearing on the subject, and the very term Spiritualist is a term of reproach.

Shall this state of things continue ?I t is for Spiritualists themselves to decide.They have it in their power to redeem the noble and heav­

en-originated cause with which they are identified from all ob­loquy, and to make it command the respect and admiration of the world. They have it in their power to rescue those pure and fitting terms, S p ir i t u a l is t and S p i r i t u a l is m , from associ­ation with doctrines and practices that are pernicious and dam­nable.1 How shall this be done 1 Let them earnestly improve the present “ crisis.” Let them personally and seriously enter upon a work o f judgment and discrimination, not alone of their neighbors, but of themselves, their own theories and principles o f action. Let them carefully distinguish between principles which allow one to live on in selfish ease and sensual indul­gence, and those which lead to earnest efforts for higher purity and spirituality, and a noble devotion to the welfare of others. The former are earthly, sensualistic, devilish ; the latter only ale worthy to be called spiritual.

The time has fully come for a step in advance— for putting Spiritualism to some practical accouut, both personally and so­cially. The raps, tippings, testings of spirit-presence, etc., have had their day and their use for the great body of Spiritual­ists. They will still have their day and their use for others ; bu t those who have once learned their A B C need not be for­ever conning over the alphabet. Satisfied that we are immor­ta l beings, and that our condition in the next stage of exist­ence will be advantaged by the noblest use of the present, let us set about that use in manly earnest.

W hat shall be done ? The first thing is to set ourselves resolutely to the practical regeneration or harmonization of oar own natures, by cultivating and exalting the spiritual till it shall subdue and overcome the animal, and extirpate all grosB and disorderly desires— in other words, till the love of

-right, of' use and o f good shall be supreme in us. This is not to be attained wholly by in te rn a l« en ta l and spiritual exerci­ses. Growth does not come by m e ^ willing it. The most ef­

ficient way to elevate ourselves is to labor earnestly for the elevation of others. To this our spirit-friends are continually urging and exhorting. Too much precept, without correspond­ing action, is as disastrous to spiritual health, as is too much food without exercise to bodily welfare. I t results in spirit­ual dyspepsia— a most miserable complaint.

There are many forms of useful activity in which Spiritual­ists may engage, individually and associatively.

There are in most communities, and in all cities, numbers of neglected children, who need instruction and care. W hy can­not Spiritualists, either as individuals or associatively, establish Sunday schools, evening schools and “ ragged schools,” gather in some of these outcasts, and bring the sublime and restrain­ing lessons of a pure Spiritualism to bear in rescuing them from vice and crim e? The children of Spiritualists, even, withdrawn as they often are from sectarian schools, might be greatly benefitted by a proper system of Sunday school instruc­tion.

There are miserable victims of intemperance and kindred vices, some of whom, by well-directed personal effort, might be sought out and brought under kindly and saving influences. There are those who are struggling with poverty and misfor­tune, to whom an encouraging word, a trifle of aid, or a little judicious advice, would be of priceless value. There are the sick and suffering, some of whom may be relieved by the lay­ing on of hands, and other simple means, and all of whom can be blessed by the suLshine of a benevolent face and a loving heart.

W hy should not Spiritualists enlist in these and other forms of self-denying effort, as well as the adherents of a darker faith ? Does not consistency demand it of them, that they thus become practical co-workers with the angels, whose unselfish labors for human good they professedly so much esteem and admire ?

The only way to make Spiritualism truly respectable in the eyes of the common-sense world, is to apply it to practically beneficent ends ; and the surest way for Spiritualists to save themselves from the common vices of society, such as frivolity, pleasure-seeking, ennui, scandal-mor.gering and scandal-making, is to engage in some worthy effort which shall earnestly enlist their minds and hearts, and unite their sympathies. This need not be, sending a gospol of Divine wrath to the heathen of some distant Borrioboola Gha ; but, instead, it may be carry­ing the gospel of Divine love and angelic ministration to the Borrioboola Ghas all around us. •

In associating for such purposes, Spiritualists need put no trammels on each others’ minds, nor set limits to each others’ faiths ; but the sole aim should be to strengthen one another's hands and hearts in practical good doing. Union is strength.

True, intelligent men and women could not long devote themselves to such efforts as have been indicated without be­coming sensible that these are mere palliatives, and utterly in­adequate to stay the tide of poverty, vice and misery which is flooding the land. Their attention would necessarily be di­rected to the causes of all this, and the means of its preven­tion. They would soon discover the rottenness of the whole existing social fabric, and thus come to realize the necessity of something better. They would see that Spiritualism must eventuate in the construction of a new social state, or it will prove of very little use to the world.

The queries reeehtly put forth by our cotemporary of the Telegraph are pregnant with significance on this point. I t says :

“ I t is manifest th a t the present social order is approaching its cul­m inating p o in t, and a m ighty revolution is soon to occur, p e ih ip s g rad u ally , b u t nevertheless su re ly ; and to w hat source shall we look for counsel and guidance in this im portan t reform ? Cun we expect the old o rder will abrogate itself and in troduce ano ther? Can we expect those whose h eart-in teg rity is ou a level w ith the present social order, will in troduce m ore ju s t m ethods and law s? O r m ust we look to new developm ents for new orders of th in g s? Does sp iritua l reform spend itself in fa c t s , or does i t dem and a corresponding social order ?

“ To us, the time has come to step beyond its facts, and dem and th a t th e ir significance be ingrafted in the laws which, a re to regulate the lives, conduct and social and commercial in tercourse of the present and coming generations. In a w ord, i t dem ands th a t society and its law s be s p ir itu a liz e d . S.iall we rest where we are or go forw ard to the completion of the work so well begun ?”

Shall this appeal meet a general response from Spiritualists as a body ? W e know that there are thousands among them who are yearning for a higher and truer life, both internally and externally,— who have become satiated with marvel-seek­ing, and sentimental communications, and even with simply “ beautiful” discourses Irom favorite trance and other speakers, — who would gladly engage in something more actively useful and soul-satisfying than these various modes of mere pleasure- seeking,— provided somebody would take the lead and plan out a feasible work. One is waiting for another.

Thus far, indeed, Spiritualists have been disinclined to lead­ership— and this has been well. Individuality should be first established, and then association may follow. B ut ha.~ not the time come for the latter ? I t should never be forced ; and yet it must and will come. T ru e leadership is vo lun tarily as­sumed, and as voluntarily acknowledged. L e t him or her who fe e ls stirred w ith in by thc im pulse o f a nolle purpose, set res­olutely to the w o r k ; aud in so far as it is really good and noble, it will command the aid of the good and^he noble— yea, the prospering smiles of angels, and the blessing of^the Father. Such an one is a God-ordained leader— though he of she will lead in modesty and deference.

In our late address a t the U tica Convention, we outlined what we conceive to be the foundation principles of a truly spiritual and thorough Reform, or “ Cure of Evil.” In doing this we were compelled to differ radically from the general sentiment of that meeting, and from the philosophy held and put forth by some as Spiritualism. To us that philosophy is anti-spiritual. I t is superficial, ignoring the most palpable moral distinctions,— if not positively pernicious and non-pro­gressive in its tendencies. True progress does not consist alone in making man a well-developed an im al (though that would .be confessedly a great advancement for some), nor yet in the ceaseless expansion o f his intellectual nature ; but it requires also his elevation from the animal and the intellectual, or the “ natural.” to the spiritual, and from the spiritual to the celestial. No philosophy which stops short of this can with propriety be called Spiritual Philosophy. A clear line of distinction must be drawn between it and the mere natural­ism, the superficial rationalism, and the self-deifying egotism, leading to sensuality and impiety, which so many have mista­ken for Spiritualism.

For our own part, we intend to devote our energies, even more distinctively than heretofore, to the development of a rational, earnest, practical, constructive, religious and spiritual Spirit­ualism.

the Pentateuch with the present number. Though the writer does not in all respects repressnt our own views, yet we have considered his contributions valuable in that they clearly show the vulnerability of the “ inspired records” o f the Jews, when tested by the same style of ciiticism tha t is brought by relig­ionists and scientists to bear'^oon the “ sacred writings” 'of other nations and the producti^w of modern inspiration. value of these ancient records/ according to the quality of the light which has come to eat|i. L et it be remembered that “ c. b . p . ” is merely describing how the matter appears to him — not teaching absolute truth for anybody else— and then these differences can be partially tolerated.

Another correspondent expresses displeasure with “ the course of the A g e ” in admitting these articles, regarding them as an “ attempt to make the Old Testament appear ri­diculous.” Wre should say rather that the ridiculousness at­taches to those who claim that book to be a perfect and in­fallible revelation .from God. This correspondent suggests a a different view of the subject, which has also some truth in it, as follows :

“ The w riter of th a t caustic series -of articles has some good ideas, bu t he is evidently ig n o ran t of the tru e philosophy of the Divine ad­m inistration. Free agents cannot alw aj’s be governed by an absolute ru le of r ig h t, b u t they m ust be le i by motives, and God alw ays em- pluys the highest m otive which cun be brought to bear on the case. The Old Testament abounds in the highest m oral precepts, bu t these were far in advance of the tim es, and could not be duly appreciated in a barbarous age of the world, when “ iro ss darkness covered tbe peo­p le ,” and the precepts were constquenUy disregarded; therefore the Lord “ gaves them also sta tu tes th a t were not good, and sta tu tes by which they slibuld not liv e ;” th a^ i^ , not good in themselves as rules of life, bu t the Dest-that m a n ia -E u degenerate sta te would be likely to appreciate and obey, is a point w here most of the divines andand moral w riters Etumble. They fail to “ vindicate the ways of God to m an .” Ju s t take the ground that God’s sovereignty does no t ex­tend to hum an actions— th a t He adapts Hia requirem ents to m an ’s m oral perceptions—and th a t He dees the best th a t can be done for m an under the circum stances, and the whole difficulty vanishes. I f God commanded the Jew s to destroy the heathen nations with an in ­discrim inate slaughter, it was because these nations were past recovery, on the oue hand , and the Jew s, on the other, had not sufficient moral sense to discover the tu rp itu d e of ih e ir conduct. I t served also as a m ake-weiglit iu keeping the Jew s from m ixing with and being contam ­inated by the su rrounding nations.”

There is obvious force in the suggestion that Deity can gov­ern men only through motives adapted to their m oral condi­tions, though that does not quite dispose of the difficulty. We do not doubt that the Jews had as high a conception of God as their mental and moral condition allowed—or, if you please, that their Jehovah was all of the Infinite Deity they could conceive of. But there is strong reason to doubt that the loving and impartial Father of all men, whom Jesus re­vealed, ever considered a part, and vastly the larger part too, of his children as “ beyond recovery,” with whom to have any­thing to do, other than to kill them indiscriminately, was “ con­tamination.” A . £. I am a subscriber to your paper and have read y o u r a rticle o f this m orning on Spiritualism , and am sorry for y o u r own credit th a t you should have deemefl yourselves a t liberty to send forth to the world an article of such a character.

I am m yself a S piritua lis t, and have become so since your pretended expose of its im posture, and m ust be classed am ongst “ the lowest, the m eanest, the most m iserable of the hum an ra ce ,” as none others would join the ranks.

Now I can assure you, gentlemen, th a t I do not belong to th is class, and I have a friend also who is entitled to th is exception—a recent con­v e rt to the tru th , and I would recommend th a t i f you again make dunces o f yourselves, th a t as a m atter of prudence you add “ with a few exceptions,” in its p roper place, so th a t there may be a loop-hole for some of your friends to escape from another sweeping denuncia­tion. There are more th a t have corns on th e ir toes than you dream of, and they m ay no t like to have them trod upon— although done “ from the best of m otives” and for their own highest good. -

I t is lam entable th a t men of your sense, education and position, should be such dupes to your vanity and self-conceit. You th in k th a t a tissue of v u lg a r abuse, i f u ttered by yourselves, will pass cu rren t for sound sense and logical argum ent. You are m istaken ; and most probably you will ere long be made sensible th a t you are so. You are vain enough to suppose th a t you have dealt a death-blow to this “ am azing im posture;” here again you are m istaken.

M ediumship 13 not a m oral, b u t a physical s ta te , and it is not strange th a t tvhen corrup t and unprincipled men find themselves possessing this power, they should m ake it a means to adm inister to their passions or to lay contributions upon those honestly seeking a t ru th ; bu t we are assured, from a reliable source, th a t these abuses will be looked into and corrected.

B u t even now all mediums are not corrup t— there a re those th a t are religious and tru th fu l. I have had and witnessed more th an a hun­dred m anifestations w ithin a few m onths past, and not a lie among them all, nor have I been advised to forsake my wife and family and to take unto m yself another affi iity . Indeed I mny say th a t I have never heard a word th a t m ight not have come from one. whose memory most of us delight to revere.

I t is to be hoped th a t ere long you will see the e rro r of your ways, and th a t you will not so lustily “ kick against the p rick s ,” — and after you have rested from your recent effort, and bave become sufficiently composed to be honest seekers after the tru th , let me know, and I will p u t you in the way to obtain it, and i f I cannot obtain for you any verses from the sp irit o f M enander, I may safely promise you some­th ing better— som ething th a t will give you greater jo y and gladness.

nological a rrangem ent of the Sacred Books, and improved divisions o f Chapters and Verses. By Leicester Ambrose Sawyer. Boston: Jo h n P. Jew ett & Co.' This claims to be a new translation of the New Testament

into modern English. The translator affirms tha t it is a strictly literal rendering, aiming to express the original with the utmost clearness, force and precision. O f Mr. Sawyer’s qualifica­tions for such a work we know nothing by previous reputation; nor are wequalified to express a critical opinion on the manner in which he has accomplished the task. B ut, with most can­did readers of tha t book, we have long felt the need of an im­proved version for the use of common readers. W hen people are accustomed from childhood to certain forms o f phraseolo­gy, before they are able to understand the real meaning, they naturally associate some crude and usually erroneous idea with the words, which ever after is a bar to the perception of ita true significance. We judge that a large p ortion of the avowed dislike and rejection of the New .Testament arises from these crude and mistaken conceptions of its meaning, formed in the mind’s childhood. L et the same ideas be pre­sented in a different garb, and often their truth is a t once per­ceived and accepted. W e have, for this reason, ever been in the habit of consulting all the different translations we could find or make ; and hence have been able to discover a vast deal more of rational, vital, eternal truth expressed in that book than less candid and more superficial readers give it credit for. In this view, we regard Mr. Sawyer’s new version as extremely valuable, independently of the question whether he has in all cases exactly and most fitly rendered the origi­nal. To see familiar truths ia a new dress gives them a new in te rest; and especially is the rejection of the old absurd and mechanical divsions into chapters and verses, and the in­troduction of such as the sense demands, to be commended.

We observe that old-fogydom, generally, whose salvation depends on keeping “ all things as they were from the begin­ning,” is much disturbed a t this innovation, as might have been expected. The “ Observers,” “ Recorders,” etc., of the religious world, have opened their batteries upon it. The ar­gus-eyed Boston C ourier's pronounces it, in its favorite and choice language, “ a ridiculous imposture,” “ the most pre­posterous humbug which has been engendered by the latter days,”— not excepting even Spiritualism. Judging from the fact that the C ourier estimate of new things is usually in in­verse proportion to their merits, our readers may safely con­clude that this new translation is a very valuable work. W e shall hereafter present some passages from it as samples of its style.

A neat little volume of 150 pages, containing some forty sketches of every-day life, inculcating the truths of Spiritual­ism in attractive lessons. The author has succeeded in pro­ducing, what she designed— “ a book that would make this beautiful earth brighter, heaven nearer, the child-heart happier and wiser.”

“ T h e A u t o c r a t o f t h e B r e a k f a s t T a b l e . B oston: Philips, Sampson & Co.”— Now is the season of gifts. Books are the most appropriate presents to friends ; and we venture to say that not a more excellent one has been Dublished^Jjia, year than the “ A utocrat.” I t is compiled from some papers under the same title in the A tla n t ic M onth ly , and contains some of the finest touches of humor, pathos and sentiment to be found in literature. There is something in it to delight every one; for like a skillful anatomist, as he is, the writer has laid open to view some of the very veins of feeling which run with a common throb through us all. H e is a live man. We are much obliged to him for this giving of us to our­selves.

E x c e r p t s .— I t is a sign of extraordinary merit, when those who most envy it are forced to praise it.

Self-love makes men idolize themselves and tyrannize over others when fortune gives the means.

I t is impossible to love those a second time, whom we have ceased to love.

S o m e o f th e U se s .In estimating the merits and demerits of the modern Spiritual

unfolding, people are apt to be very narrow and superficial in their views. Some item of persor.al and temporary advantage, on the one hand, or some case of individual delusion, loss, or suffering, on the other, is magnified into a crucial fact and a final demonstration of the good or evil tendencies of the whole movement.

For example, Mr. Randolph alleges that, consequent upon his interest in Spiritualism, he has been led into all sorts of wild disorders, made the sport of demons, and subjected to terrible sufferings, even to the brink of suicide. Hence it is argued tha t Spiritualism must be of the Devil, and wholly evil in its inception, its design and its consequences.

We would suggest a broader view. Suppose the theory of di­abolism be true— that remorseless fiends, or at best, wily demons, are ever about us, ready to throw their seductive influence over all impressibles, and lead them onto crime and ruin. I t is plain that the world at large does not believe this momen­tous fact, if it be a fact. Up to the advent of Spiritualism, there was very little practical faith in spirit-presence, or exist­ence, good or bad. The old experience and testimony of the world had lost its power to convince the masses. How, then, should they become convinced, but by a new experience ? How know satisfactorily that either good or evil spirits can commu­nicate with or have power over us, but by having it demon­strated in actual cases under our own observation? The ancient records, however true in fact or philosophy, needed the confirmation of a fresh experience ; and this is what the world is getting in modern Spiritualism. Is not this a most important use ?

To certain individuals, by virtue of their peculiar suscep­tibilities, it falls incidentally to be pioneer explorers in this new region. Their experiences, whether agreeable or painful, whether rightly estimated by themselves or not, become highly instructive to others. They are beacon-lights to voyagers who come after, perhaps for many generations. A re not these most valuable uses also ?

The safety of the world does not lie in ignoring -spirit-pres- ences and denying spirit-influences; but in discriminating be­tween the elevating and the debasing. a . e . n .

Benton, an u a o d ita physician in th is establishm ent, and m yself, resolved to pay thia “ r e ­m arkable woman” a v is it, and for th is purpose we procured a carriage and rode to Chestertow n, a sm all village in W arren Co., a distanee ot forty-six miles. Thus fa r we found the roads good, bu t as the rest o f the way was bad, we tarried a ll n igh t. U ntil a few daya previoas to our v isit, th is woman had been kep t for nearly a year in thia village, and as she had been an object of m uch in te rest there, we availed o u r­selves cf the opportunity of learning the opinions and views o f th e people on her case. We found but one opinion, and th a t .was in ac­cordance w ith the facts I am about to s ta te , so ik r a s regards h e r life, character, and th e circum stance of her living without food.

There were various cpinions as to w hat sustained life, &c., b u t only one as to the fact about eating. A law yer believed tha t she was desti­tu te of a m ind, th is hav ing been an n ih ila ted ; b a t there v u & life— principle left, &c., & c.; and m any o ther theories aa vague or simple were prevalent. I t was evident th a t m aterialism h ad a strong foot­hold.

From Chestertown we went about e ight miles and found the ■* wo­m an ” a t the residence of her husband, a t a considerable elevation oa the side o f a m ountain. T here a re b u t few residents in th is regkm , owing to the scarcity o f arable lan d , i t being very mountainous. The dwelling was log, w ith a sm all fram e addition for the benefit o f th is woman. W hen we entered the room , we found h e r in her usual posi­tion, i. e., ly ing upon he r back, with her shoulders elevated ao a s to allow of he r head being bent so fa r back th a t th e forehead rested open the pillow. She was no t b reath ing . The m outh was wide open, and there was no motion except such as seemed to be necessary to sustain life.

The first m otion I observed was a peculiar one of tbe left arm and shoulder. This could not be produced by one’s own will, bu t was more like an effect o f m agnetic pow er; and on fu rth e r investigation, I found th a t the fingers and thum b of th is hand were concentrated, as a me­dium would do in m agnetizing w ater; and tbey placed upon the p it o f the stom ach. I learned , on in qu iry , th a t th is h an d had been firmly held there , and in th a t m anner, ever since the woman was first taken “ sick .” One physician undertook to stra igh ten th is arm and keep i t aw ay from th is point, b u t the a ttem p t caused such a desperate struggle th a t the design was abandoned. W henever she would commenoe breathing, the left arm would cease to act, and the right one would commence its l.ibors. The hand of th e r ig h t a rm would strike the ab ­domen several times in quick succession, and ru b the stomach a Kttle, and then come to a rest. The bowels and stom ach would become ap ­paren tly filled, and act as n a tu ra lly as i f she had eaten, aBd food waa undergoing the n a tu ra l p reparation for nourish ing the system . This' process would be repeated every few m inutes. My n ex t discovery was th a t the toes of the r ig h t foot were fastened upon the top of the left foot w ith g reat firmness.

After observing these peculiarities o f th e case, we examined physical system generally , and found th a t the c ircu la tion was good* strong and reg u la r, flesh n a tu ra l, w arm th general and about the rig h t tem perature. There appeared to be no em aciation, yet her husband th ough t she was not qu ite as fleshy as she was a t first.

I tried some m agnetic experim ents upon h e r to aid in arriving a t m b e tte r knowledge of h e r case. I found th a t persp ira tion would s ta r t easily ; hence there was a waste of m atte r. W hen I placed my fingers so as to in terfere w ith the labors of h e r own h a n d , her righ t hand would s trik e m y hand aw ay. .

A nother rem arkable feature o f the case was, that as soon as we would go n ear her, she would m anifest sickness a t the stomach, go into spasm s, and m ake g reat effort to vomit. These spasms would increase, u n til i t was thought best to re tire for a few minutes. She would rise up in bed, tu rn her head back u n til it rested on her spine, tliwi spring up , throw herself backw ards and fall her fu ll weight on her face, w ith he r head so fa r back as to allow her to s t^ ^ P in this man­n e r ,^ These spasmodic motions were performed v e ry ^ J id ly . .

Thus far I noticed th a t a ll the m an iie s ta tv S M ^^& it the spasms) were in accordance w ith spirit-pow er and in f id u ^ ^ H E a t the w t m a l applications made by the hands and feet were such as spirits generally . requ ire in sustain ing life when a pa tien t cannot eat.

I now made an in terio r view; b u t as I found some new principles in­volved, I could no t a rriv e a t th e facts so as to give a scientific solution; hence w ill only a ttem p t to give somo general statements. I t seemed th a t there was bu t little or no waste o f carbon ia the system, for a ll the carbonic acid gas was dissolved and purified so a s to send i t into the system ag ain ; and this was accomplished by a n a tu ra l process; ye t I never before saw it accomplished in the animal system. A cu r­ren t of m agnetism would pass from the vital organs to the left shoul­der, th rough the a rm , and thence upon th e vital organs a t the p it o f the stomach. A t the shoulder an ex ternal c u rre n t o f sim ilar m agnet­ism would meet the cu rren t from the body, and accompany i t into the system. In this m anner p a r t o f the v ital elem ents were supplied, being those th a t caused v ita l ac tio n ; and th e fingers were placed so as to give the cu rren t a r ig h t direction and convey it to its proper points, chiefly the stom ach, spleen and solar plexus. When the righ t arm was exercised, the stom ach became filled with gases, and would ac t; the gases would pass into the intestines, and were taken up by the '"*>»«>« and conveyed th rough the thoracic d u c t to the blood. The principal p a r t of th is gas (o r food) was hydrogen an d oxygen, which accounted for the m anner in which the waste in perspiration was supplied. The liver seemed to be do rm an t, and very health y , y e t presented a peculiar appearance. Every appearance indicated tha t there had been no food taken into the system for a long time.

N ext m y atten tion was directed to the b ra in , and I found th a t d is­ease had destroyed a p a r t o f it. On one side the alimentive organ was destroyed, aud the nerve m uch diseased; the o ther side was also m uch diseased. T here was a formation on both sides, and this is sus­tained by the fact th a t, d u rin g August and Septem ber, 1857, much bad m atter escaped th rough the left ear, and from th is matter th irteen sm all bones, vary ing from one-fourth of an inch to an inch in lengths were taken— being pieces of the inner skull which were crowded and broken off by the in te rnal form ation. I judged th a t th is disease in the b ra in was the o rig inal source of the difficulty.

I t appeared to me th a t h e r case was of such a peculiar chaiaeter th a t sp irits thought it proper to tak e the m atte r in hand, and tha t she (h e r m ind) is so far removed from the body as to allow another s p r i t to take p a r t possession, and th a t the associates of this spirit assist ia feeding and sustain ing life. The proofs I have'-to offer on this point, are , f i r s t , th a t there is a scientific intelligence m anifested, of whieh she is totally ignoran t; second, m y in te rio r senses, or vision; H ard, a ll the impressions I had a t the time and since. F or a dear* logical sequence of ideas, sound reasoning a n d a n eloquent and f t r suasive sty le, she has never been equalled by any medium who has ad­dressed us. H er subject was Sp iritualism in its various phases—pro senting both the d a rk and the b rig h t Eide. The divine idea embodied in the mission of th is new revelation to m ankind, was set forth in a clear and forcible m anner, and the conclusion of he r discourse, wherein so m any varied and b rillian t changes were ru n g upon the question— “ Adam , where a r t thou ’ ’’— which Deity has been ask ing through *11 past ages to m an. as the highest representative of m atte r, fell with a m asterly effect upon the audience. We do no t desire to over-estimate Mrs. H yzer’s powers as a m edium , b u t we feel th a t she m ust be thor­o u g h l y known and studied to be appreciated. B r o t h e r N e w t o k : —The citizens of this place have never had a good opportunity, or at least bu t few opportunities, to w itness sp iritua l m an­ifestations, on account of the opposition met with from bigots and skep­tics; but we have recently had a visit from Prof. I. G. Stearns, a well- known psychologist and spiritual medium, b rother o f C. S. S tearns, The publisher, in New York. He has been lecturing here to crowded houses, convincing the mcst skeptical of the reality of psychology, and m any of the reality o f Spiritualism , as he perm its him self and subjects to be placed under a spiritual influence before his audience, perform ­ing some of the most surprising experim ents and dem onstrations th a t we ever witnessed.

Since his lectures he has been teaching a m agnetic school, as heterm s it,__that is, g iving instruction in psychology, mesmerism, andinvestigating Spiritualism , developing medium s, &c.. &c. He has by this means developed some good mediums for us.

On last Friday evening, being the last n ig h t o f his school, the schol­a rs were perm itted to invite their friends, and qu ite a large num ber Were present to witness the operations o f the scholars. They formed themselves in to an association, to be called the “ F o rt W ayne M agnet­ic Association,” and elected th e ir officers, consisting of ladies and gen­tlemen. Jam es Howe, Esq., H iram W elis, Sen., C harles M arshall, and a num ber o f o ther Spiritualists , were tlected honorary members, together with several ladies. In the course of the evening Prot. Stearns developed two good w riting m edium s, and tests were given th a t aston­ished every one p resen t; a n d we th in k we may be assured of a good tim e coming.

On Monday evening next, we meet again for the purpose of practice and making arrangem ents to ren t a hall, engage lecturers. &c. This m agnetic school is an original idea w ith Prof. S tearn s , for developing m ediums, and I th ink it an excellent one. He has done a g reat deal of good here a t a ll events. I t looks too m uch like a hot-house system of forcing grow th , which may prove not only detrim ental, bu t in the end actually disastrous to health an d tru e progress. The finer susceptibilities o f the hum an organism should not be tam pered with for frivolous ends—as is very likely to be the case in a promiscuous school o f young people—though they may be cultivated for elevated an d worthy purposes, .under proper condi­tions, w ith the best results. B u t there is much to be learned by ex­perience in relation Id these m atters , and we shall hope th a t the results of th is “ original id ea” w ill be carefully observed and reported for th e benefit of the world. have had a very in teresting visit from Ur. J a m e s C o o p e r , of Bellfon- ta ine , Ohio, who lectured last Sunday a t M etropolitan H all, with good acceptanoe. We regard Dr. Cooper a good m edium for speaking, see­in g and draw ing. W hile here he has d raw n several p o rtra its of ab­sent friends, which have been recognized. On the whole, we are m uch pleased with his v isit, and th in k the resu lt will be good.

D r. T. L. Nichols, the m an who joined the Roman Catholic Church by the advice o f sp irits , has been lecturing to crowded houses of C ath­olics on the Superiority o f the Catholic C hurch and Religion over all others. H e holds th a t the Catholic Church is the only tru e church , and as infallible; th a t the Pope is a m edium , and reoeives communica­tions direct from Jesus C hrist; while he believes th a t the bishops and priests receive sp iritua l communications from their pa tron saints. He was asked several questions, among which was this: “ Do you not re­gard Reason as m an’s highest g u id e? ” His reply was, th a t L uther said-, “ Reason was an ass. ” A voice from the audience rep litd to h im : “ V erily, then , thou a r t an ass, for thou has been reasoning to­n ig h t!” The Dr. thinks th a t tbe S p iritualists will a ll finally jo in the Rom an Catholic Church.

W ella Anderson, from La Salle, 111., has been with us several weeks, and has succeeded in g e ttin g J w ith th e aid o f the s p i r i t s ) _ E o m e of the finest p o rtra its of deceased friends, in pencil-sketch, I have ever had th e good fortune to set eyes upon. He informs me th a t they are draw n only when he is in a semi-unconscious s t a t e , or psychologized. He has taken eight or ten , six of which have been recognized.

We are to have Mr. Collins, the ty ing medium , here nex t week, when we expect to give the skeptical world fu rth e r proofs of the pow- era o f disembodied spirits.

Rev. Dr. Rice has announced a discourse against Spiritualism next Sunday evening, when we expect our cause to receive the threshing it o f course deserves, and which will do i t a vast am ount o f good.

The popu lar devil was also a m aterial being— a personage going about seeking whom he may devour. Jesus, however, made him out to be a hum an being, inasm uch as he once called Peter S a ta n , m eaning an adversary . All adversaries o r enemies a re Satans to us. How m any have you in B oston?— Fashion, pride, evil hab its, etc ., all are devils.

B u t w hat and where is God ? This is an abstruse subject, in which the in q u ire r becomes lost. I will speak of the God of sp irits , o r the sp iritua l God. We do not see Him as a personal Being; by searching we cannot fully find Him out. B u t we find a Principle of Goodness, of which m an is ever obtaining h igher and h igher ideas as he him self progresses. This God is everywhere present, and in all th ings,— as really in the an t as in the highest archangel, according to th e wants and capacities of each.

Sp irits have never seen a lim ited personal God, with “ back-s:des,” as Moses said he did. [A grotesque and not very reverent illustration was here given of the mode in which the speaker supposed th is took p lace.] How is i t possible to be banished from the presence of God, when the Psalm ist says, aud says tru ly , “ I f I m ake my bed in hell, thou a r t th e re ;” and when N ature says, and Reason repeats, th a t God is everywhere present?

Heaven to the sp irit is no t a locality or a place. I t is a slaie. I f pure and ju s t , you a re in heaven, here o r hereafter. The same of hell: i t is a state, not a place. I f you are jealous, selfish, envious, u n ­ju s t , etc ., you are in hell, here and hereafter; and tiie smoke of your torm ent ascendeth up forever,” so long as you are so.

The discourse continued w ith fu rth e r observations on the om in ipres- ence o f Deity, the n a tu re o f “ the dev il,” e tc ., strongly spiced with ec­centricities, some of w hich, from any o ther source than “ Lorenzo Dow,” would have been considered in bad taste. We presum e they were not more offensive th an those he wac frequently gu ilty of when on earth .

He concluded with some pungent sallie3 a t “ Scientific Investiga­to rs ,1' including several stanzas of w hat the C ourier would term “ frigh tfu l doggerel,” aimed a t “ the F e lton ians.” A fter leaving the stand , he came hastily back, and said, “ Friends, I want to p ra y ,’* and repeated a sort of ju b ilan t ex travaganza over the “ death of the dev il,” which has already been published, and will h a rd ly bear repe­tition.

The evening discourse through M r. Fairfield was on Ancient and Modern Spiritualism . I t was evidently from a different source from th a t o f the afternoon, exhibiting perhaps less o f intellectual vigor and consecutiveness of thought, yet not w anting in oddities of expression and pungent sallies against popular superstitions— sometimes ra th e r shocking to sensitive hearers. We have no room for a report.

B o s to n R efo rm C o n fer en ce .The difficult question of F a te and Free Agency was the subject of

ano ther anim ated debate a t Bromfield Street H all, on M onday evening last. The Free Agency side was forcibly and ably represented by Messrs. P ike, B un tin , and T rask ; and the Fatalistic by Dr. Child, Messrs. W ethertee, Edson, B urke and B radbury . The argum ents were sub­stan tia lly such as have been used from time im m em orial in canvassing th is vexed question, and o u r lim its will not allow of their repetition in exienso.

M r. N e w t o n read a b rie f paper, in which he endeavored to show th a t the apparen tly antagonistic tru th s involved iu the subject are really harm onious parts of a perfect circle , or counterpart p illars of the same arch . This m ay be published in our next issue.

The question proposed for the next m eeting is one of in terest to all Sp iritualists , as follows:

“ Is i t susceptible of dem onstration th a t the trance, in the case of m e­dium s, is not self-induced, or induced by a hum an sp irit in the body ? Can it be dem onstrated th a t any medium is ever en tranced by a de- p u r ic i sp ir it ?”

.The.Melodeon was well filled on Sunday afternoon la s t, to listen to a promised address from the eccentric preacher, Lorenzo Dow, through the Organism of H . P . Fairfield. In subm itting him self to “ the in­fluence," M r. F . underw ent a strik ing transform ation. He took the stand in the character of a decrepit and palsied old m an, bowed under the w eight o f infirmities. This appearance was m aintained constantly th roughou t an address o f nearly an hour and a half. The style o f ad­dress was equally peculiar. Persons acquainted w ith Mr. Dow in his earth-life s ta te th a t the im personation was sing u larly life-like and characteristic. M r. Fairfield affirm s th a t he never saw M r. D?, and the fact that he could have been b u t a few years of-age a t the tim e of the la tter’s decease, renders it improbable th a t he should have seen him.

The speaker commenced by repeating a tex t from 1 Cor. 8: 6, 6:* * Though there be th a t a re called gods, w hether in heaven or in earth , (as there are gods m any, and lords m any,) bu t to us there is bu t one God, the F a th e r.” T urn ing instan tly to the audience, on the recital o f these words, he suddenly demanded, w ith electric effect, “ D o you believe i i V 9 O f the discourse which followed, we can give b u t a mea­gre outline.

The speaker said th a t he came as a representative of both the earth ly and the sp iritu a l worlds, having resided in both. He found every­where a yearn in g on the p a r t o f hum an beings to understand the P ri­mal Cause— to know of God. A ll nations have had their peculiar ideas of God, o r peculiar Gods. The God of orthodox Christendom is a very material being; he is represented as appearing in a personal visible form; as “ w alking in the garden in the cool o f the d a y ;” as lim ited in knowledge and ju d g m en t; as needing to travel from place to place in order to acquaint him self w ith the doings o f people; as in one instance a Teiy careful tailor, directing m inutely about the dress of A aron and the priests; as again a good carp en te r, p lann ing the construction of buildings, etc.; moreover he is a “ God of a rm ies,” a “ jealous God,” a God delighting in w arfare and carnage. Hence those who believe in this God are the slaves of fear. Their heaven is also a m aterial place,— • c ity glittering all over with the glory of the God most worshipped on earth , namely. Gold. Their hell is also a m aterial place and location— though it m ust be said th a t the clergy had so repaired up tlie ir hell o f late, that it had got to be a tolerably comfortable place. The following appears in the N. Y. E ve n in g Post:As since Hum e’s accession to r a n k and fortune, anecdotes respecting

him seem to be apropos, I herewith send you an experience o f my own w ith th a t gentlem an th a t occurred Nov. 25, 1854. On the evening of the day I had attended a sp iritual circle held a t the house o f a friend, a t Ravenswood, L. I ., a t which M r. Hume was the medium , and du rin g which a ll the well-known phenomena which occur in h is presence had been witnessed and felt by us.

lu th e breaking up o f the meeting, finding th a t Hum e and m yself were billeted upon the same gentlem an, (a m usical f r ie n d ) 'I proposed to Hume to allow me to lie down with him when he w ent to bed, for an hour o r two, as I was told th a t some curious m anifestations m ight be expected. Accordingly, tak in g off only my coat and boots, I en­sconced m yself alongside of him un d er the bed-clothes, first locking the door and fastening the w indow -shutters, and ascertain ing th a t we were the sole occupants of the room. N either Hume no r m yself had ever slept in the house before.

Almost imm ediately a fte r the ligh t was extinguished I heard raps a ll around me— on the floor, on the walls, on the head-board, on my pillow, in fact everywhere. The sounds varied in intensity from lig h t taps on the pillow to loud, resounding blows upon the floor and walls.I asked m any questions, and received 'in te lligen t answers by means of these raps. I saw, also, in various parts o f the room, nebulons-look- ing and w andering ligh ts, now and then crossed by d a rk irreg u lar shadows. Soon I felt soft and gentle touches, as if by a hum an hand, upon the top and back of my h e a d , followed quickly by the placing of a cool, moist hand upon my forehead; which I was tolc^by m eans of the rap s was the hand of H um e’s deceased mother. In a few moments another sp ir i t came, and after touching me from my feet upw ards, also placed a hand upon m y forehead, gently pu lling and sm oothing my beard, and closing up my eyes, and then rapp ing out answers to m any questions upon the closed lid. His hand felt soft and warm. Still an­other sp irit now cam e, and stepped upon the bed and begah w alking over it, feeling to mo as if a child had climbed up and was w aikiug ever us, stepping carefully over us, and between us, b u t not upon us, the bed-clothes being indented a t each footfall. In a few moments, however, the sp irit lay down on the outside of the bed, and on us both, pressing with a ll th e w eight, and .precise ly in the same m anner th a t a living child m igh t have done.

The sp irit then wished me good n igh t by the raps, and apparen tly departed.

The whole occupied about h a lf an hour, and du rin g the whole time Hume and I lay upon o ur backs covered to the chin by the bed-clothes, and touching each o ther the entire length of our persons, from shoul­ders to heel, and during it a ll Hum e did not s tir in the least, and made no m uscular movement, o ther th an th a t caused by his breath ing.

S p ir its Id e n tif ie d .•The A ub u rn C larion of last week gives these facts:“ A. M. Convis, the medium residing a t B ridgew ater, N. Y ., held a

circle a t the house of F. Goodrich, in th is city , on the evening of the 3d inst. About fifteen reliable friends were p resen t, several o f whom were inquirers. He described the sp irit of an old m an n e a r M r. Searls; said the m an died suddenly; was rid ing on a load of h a y ; fell off on his head, and was killed instantaneously. M r. S. recognized it as his fa ther, who died in the m anner designated. M r. Convis was an en tire s tran g er to all the parties, and had no possible ex ternal means of know ing in regard to the sp irit he enabled M r. S. to identify.

“ A t Macedon, a few evenings Bince, M r. Convis enabled Mr. H ar­ring ton , o f th a t place, to identify a sp irit b ro ther, who he said died w ith a disease th a t spotted the body all over. The m an died with lep­rosy! He likewise described the sp ir it o f a neighbor, saying he fell from a build ing and was suddenly killed. I t was correct; and the spirit likewise wrote his name through Mr. Convis.”

The discussion on tl-.e “ Sources of Fallacy” was continued.Dr. G ould: I r i s evident th a t there are sources of fallacy whi h lie

outside of ourselves; still, while the n a tu re of the m ind is so little u n ­derstood, it is difficult to establish a position by indubitable proof. The sources ly ing nex t ourselves we can best comprehend. I f we are u n ­tru th fu l ourselves, we may expect u n tru th fu l answers from the sp irit- world— u n tru th fu l sounds and inharm onious music. I f we are to have tru th from above, we m ust live tru th fu l lives; live in such a m anner th a t tru th fu l sp irits will not be asham ed to associate w ith us. We m ust devote ourselves to lives of substan tia l uses.

Dr. G ray read a letter from L H akes, of Cicero, N. Y ., published in the Telegraph, in which M r. H. complains of the sentim ents which have gone out from the Conference— from Dr. G ray. J . F. Coles and others—which would lead one to suppose th a t there is, after a ll, no real tangible evidence of spirit-com m union. M r. II. thought o ther­wise, th a t the proofs a re good and conclusive.

Dr. G ray said: There was no t a word he had ever said or w rittenth a t would bear this construction. l ie had abundan t evidence His position and th a t of M r. Coles were entirely diverse. He had m ain­tained th a t Mr. Coles should enjoy perfect liberty in though t and sneech, bu t he had no doubt himself. Five years ago he read a paper to the Conference on the subject of fallacies, and it was because he was a real Sp iritualist, th a t he wished to clear the subject from fallacies. Your M ountain Cove and K iantone Movement, and Free Loveism have had th e ir origin in spurious com m unications, and it is im portant th a t they be exposed and understood.

M r. Coles: . M r. Hakes him self illu stra tes one source of fallacy. He speaks of Spiritualism as “ our cause.” Now it was not his cause, nor was ativ o ther ism . His object was t r u th ; and Spiritualists were over credulous. Some tim e since he had announced to the Conference th a t he had seen a table move w ithout contact, th rough the m edium ­ship of Mr. Paine, of Worcester. He was asked then w hat made it move, and declined to answer. I t was ' a stand w eighing about ten pounds. R.ips were also made, and questions answered, most o f them w rongly, however. Still th is was excused, and everything looked p re tty fair. After going aw ay, however, he doubted. He and Sm ith (th e razor-strop m an ,) tried some experim ents, and came to the con­clusion th a t the th ing could bo done w ithout the aid of sp irits. Last S a tu rday evening they had another s ittin g with M r. Paine. There weie present M r. Sm ith, M r. W aters, a physician, and himself. On th is occasion the stand was replaced by a heavy table, weighing fifty pounds. Haps were m ade, communications given, aud the table moved, no one touching it a t the time. He concluded th a t the key to the m achinery, if there was any, m ust be near where Mr. Paine sat. He proposed th a t the spirits should lift one end uf the table while he lifted the o ther, but to th is they dem urred. I t was finally decided th a t Sm ith should try the experim ent. He accordingly walked up to the table, and the first th ing he did was to move it about three inches from its position on the floor. T hat ended the perform ance. The spirits after th a t were dum b. Not a motion of the table, or rap , or any th ing else could be got. M r. Paiue gave a long explanation about electricity, d isturbed c u rre n ts , e tc ., b u t he noticed also th a t M r. P. dropped his handkerchief and picked it up again. He examined the spot where it fell, and detected a l ittle fissure iu the carpet and a little orifice like a nail-hole in the floor. They proposed th a t the carpet should bo taken up. M r. P . would not consent. They proposed he should tu rn his pockets w rong side out. To this he would not agree. They then formed themselves into a committee, and resolved not to leave the room un til their doubts were cleared up. This brought M r. Paine to term s; and he acknowledged th a t the table was moved, and rap s made by m achinery concealed under the floor. An iron pin, three or four inches long, w hich he carried in his pocket, on being in­serted in the hole they had discovered in the floor, and played on by his heel, operated levers or treadles which forced o ther pins up against the foot of two of the legs of the table; and in this m anner the table was moved, and the raps were made. He could even play a tune with them. In this way, he said, a ll his physical m anifestations a t Worces­ter and elsewhere had been m ade, and th a t no one— not even his wife or children— was privy to the deception;Jbut chat his object had been to become fully acquainted with th e tricks of m edium s, and then ex­pose them to the world. B u t M r. Paine was present and would make his explanation and defence for himself. There was one other point, and a painful one, o f which he m ust speak. The physician who was present took the opportunity to consult H ahnem ann, th rough Mr. Paine, on a case of disease. Now if H ahnem ann was to prescribe for him , he would like to know it, bu t was unw illing to take medicine by the direction of wires under a rogue’s heel.

M r. Paine: He deeply felt the unpleasantness of his position, bu t under like circumstances he would do the same th in g again. H is ob­jec t had been to expose hum bug. He was a Spiritualist and a medium , bu t not a physical one. S till there were tru e physical mediums. Hume was one, and there were two or three in New Y ork, aud some in W orcester. He held up tho iron p in , and said he had passed for a powerful physical m edium , all through the agency of th a t little wire. B u t he had never taken a cent for his mediumship. [This point was largely investigated. Several gentlemen saii^they had been repeatedly to Mr. P a in e ’s house a t W orcestar, and called on him here, and offered him money, which he had uniform ly refused. I t appeared, however, th a t some slight contributions to pay for gas and trouble, had on a few occasions been m ade.] M r. Paine continued: The propriety of hiscourse m ight adm it of question. He had paid his money to mediums and been tricked. He thought it righ t to meet them in their own way. His object had been to gain the confidence of the most em inent ones, and then expose them . There were ten bogus m ediums to one true one. He had made no confidant in his deceptions, and therefore had no one to appeal to in proof of the p u rity of his motives. His m achi­nery would ra ise only two of the legs of his table, and yet witnesses had declared th a t they had p u t th e ir hands under all four of the legs a t once. The sp irits d irecting o ther m ediums had recognized his m ani­festations as genuine; and even M r. Weston aud Ruggles— Dr. H a re ’s late medium — had been sent to him by their sp irit guides.

Mr. Wteston objected to th is statem ent, and said th a t on the n ig h t of th is expose, Ruggles’ sp irits notified him th a t there was a muss with Paine— th a t some parties were showing him up , etc.

Dr. G ray : I t is not necessary for one who understands the laws ofphysical trance, to h u n t for m achinery. Always when physical m ani­festations are h ad , the medium is in one degree of trance. The exter­nal senses will detect it. Have the eyes undergone dilatation ? Are the extrem ities cold ? These signs cannot be counterfeited. He could detcct the spurious from the tru e as fast as he could count his fingers.An impressible, by a mesmerizer, can be made to see anything. Did not Ju d g e Edmonds suppose he saw the man in California, who was no m an, bu t a fiction? And d id he n o t get communications from a person lost on the A rctic, who proved not to have been lost, but made his escape on a ra ft ? The ability to transfer a visible image is one of the wonders. There is a circle in this city— a book will be pub­lished about it , and a wonderful book it will be—which will illustrate this point. M r. Paine, therefore, should not charge fraud on those m e­dium s who profess to have seen sp irits about him perform ing his feats of legerdemain.

Dr. H allo ck : Heaven does not touch the earth to b last it, and un ­less good comes out of a m anifestation a t the time, o r leads to good by its suggestions, we m ay safely conclude i t is fallacious. [D r. H . con­tinued a t length.]

M r. Coles proposed th a t such individuals as m ight choose, should meet him a t the close of the Conference, when they would devise ways and means to pursue the investigation, w ith Conklin, Redm an, andother medium s, in the expectation of finding some bona fid e physical m anifestations, somewhere.

Mr. B en n in q said these would probably not be procured, in the m an­ner proposed. The ra ising of purses, and committees, and the deter­m ination of seekers, had seemed ra th e r to prove obstacles than aids to success.

C le r ic a l Punning.—Parson Twiss of New Ham pshire had ju s t m ar­ried a lady whose Christian name was Desire, and i t being in his course of rem ark on a certain Sabbath to illu stra te the difference between the renewed and unrenewed m an in the exercise of love, he delivered him ­self to the am usem ent of his audience, in th is way— “ Form erly I had no Desire to love, b u t now I have a Desire to love and I love freely.”

A S in g u la r R eve la tion and P rophecy .—Quite a sensation has been recently created in Paris, by a m ysterious declaration of the Arch­bishop of th a t city. I t appears th a t a t th e term ination of a solemn m eeting of the Parisian clergy, in the church o f St. Sulpice, the P re ­late , in dismissing the members of the convocation, pronounced an ad­dress full of eloquence, p iety and feeling, d u rin g which he said:

“ A frigh tfu l danger threatens the co u n try ; a d anger which our o r­der will be the first to share. Time is not accorded to us to avert i t___for i t is here— even while I speak it is here and knocking a t the gate. I am no t perm itted to add more in the way of W arning, neither m ust I reveal the n a tu re of the danger with which werare th reatened; b u t rest assured it is im m inent and dead ly .” i

More rem arks o f the same n a tu re were added, and the words of w arning produced deep excitem ent among all orders of priests who were present, tire more especially as both c lergy and people were of opinion th a t the Archbishop u ttered sentences o f inspiration. A su­perstitious alarm was g radually stealing over the po p u lar m ind a t the last dates, from a belief th a t som ething m ystic and trem endous th rea t­ened France in the near fu tu re , and the celebrated prophecy of O rval, a monk who lived centuries ago, is also quoted to show th a t the mission of Napoleon I I I is n ear its close, &nd th a t a ll the in stitu tions he has reared will be overthrow n.

D eath from W ant o f Sleep.—The question how long can a person exist w ithout sleep is o ftenerasked th an answ erd, and the difficulties and inhum an ity o f answ ering the question by experim ent would seem to leave it ever unsolved. A recent communication to a B ritish Society whose fields of operation are in Asia, would seem to answ er the inqui­ry , is a description 'of a cruel mode of punishm ent pecu liar to , and we believe, original w ith the Chinese. I t appears t in t a Chinese m er­chan t had been convicted o f m urdering his wife, and was sentenced to d ie 'by being totally deprived of the privilege of going to sleep. This painful and singular mode of q u ittin g au earth ly existence was carried into execution a t Amoy under the following circum stances:

“ The condemned was placed in prison under the care of three o f the police guard , who relieved each other every a lternate hour, and who prevented the prisoner from falling asleep n igh t or day. He thus lived for nineteen days w ithout enj lying any sleep. At the commencement of the eighth day, his sufferings were so intense th a t he implored the authorities to g ran t him the blessed opportun ity o f being s tran g u la ­ted, garroted, guillotined, burned to death, drowned, shot, quartered , blown up with gunpowder, or p u t to death in any conceivable way which their hum anity or ferocity could invent. This will give a slight idea of the horrors of death from w ant o f sleep.”

A Statem en t o f Facts .— To the P u b lic .—For m any years I had been feeble and subject to frequen t severe bilious a ttacks, besides being afflicted w ith a bad scrofulous hum or. From the y e a r of o u r Lord 1850, and onward, I found my troubles increasing upon me and my streng th failing. I took on the dyspepsia in its most v iru len t form, and could not eat enough to sustain na ture . I tried the remedies p re­scribed by allopathy, hydropathy , homoeopethy and eclecticism, but still I failed. In the au tum n of 1856 I was obliged to close my pro­fessional labors, when all my friends thought I was gone past recovery; and I really thought m yself th a t my work for th is world was done. B ut my wife could not give me u p , and earnestly desired me to consult a clairvoyant. W ithout a particle of faith in the project, I subm itted, purely to gratify her. I was directed to Wm. E. Rice, Boston, Mass. I called upon him , and , w ithout giving him any clue to nam e, profes­sion or case, subm itted to his exam ination. He gave a m asterly an a ly ­sis of the physiological and pathological conditions o f my en tire sys­tem, and told me th a t by a proper course o f regim en, which he p re ­scribed, and some simple rem edies, compounded of roots and herbs, he thought th a t I could be restored to comfortable health , though I should never perhaps be a robust man. I came home and followed his directions to the le tte r , and in tw enty-six weeks I had gained twenty- six pounds by F a irbanks’ scales, and have been laboring in m y pro­fessional duties with unw earying assiduity since the spring of 1857, with a prospect before me of y ears of com parative comfort and useful­ness. I have since recommended others to M r. Rice. F o r instance, M r. Stedm an and Mrs. Bowm an, of Sidney, and Mrs. B urgess, of A ugusta, all o f whom have received benefit from his trea tm en t; and it is my honest opinion th a t his treatm ent o f disease is s*ife and effective.

C o r n e l i a N e w t o n , of K ingsbury , N. Y ., in the six teenth y ea r of he r age, passed from earth to the h igher life, on the first o f December, after a lingering illness of twelve months.

In her last hours, two little sp irits th a t had been for some time in the spirit-w orld, appeared, and held sweet communion with her. Three other “ b righ t sp irits—beautiful sp irits’* drew near to streng then and accompany her to th e ir celestial home, Cornelia tu rn ed to her sister (a medium ) and asked, “ Will th ey wait for m e?” She was assured th a t they had come to conduct her new-born sp irit to the blissful realm s w here pain and sickness a re never known. Then with child­like sim plicity and innocence, Cornelia, w ith joy alm ost unutterable , exelaimed, “ Oh happy , happy sp irits , they will w ait for m e!”

For some hours before her sp irit left, even down alm ost to her last moments, he r whole countenance was lit up with a serene smile and heavenly joy th a t cannot be described. All persons p resent seemed to d rin k deeply of the same calm and heavenly influence.

Cornelia was a member o f a M ethodist class, also a medium , and a believer in Spiritualism . C hurch members forsook her. D uring he rlast illness not one visited her, not o n e! Angels were th ere ;__shewas poor and needy and weak— brigh t angels from the church above came and strengthened her. Jesu3 was poor, and alm ost alone in the garden— the church persecuted and forsook him . “ Now there ap­peared an angel un to him from heaven strengthening h im .” “ X was sick and ye visited me no t.” “ When saw we thee an hungered , or a th irs t, or a 6 tranger, o r naked , or in prison, and did not m inister unto thee ?” “ As ye did i t not unto one o f the Jeast o f these, ye did i t notunto m e.” Mathew 26: 43, 45, 44.

W ho has not read H ans A nderson’s touching little sto ry o f “ T he U gly D uck” ?— the poor duck th a t was hatched a t last o u t o f the g reat egg, only to m ortify its m other and to be per­secuted by its brothers and sisters because it was bigger and grayer than they, and th a t a t length in desperation pushed its w ay under farra-yard fence and escaped to the moor. How humble and wretched the poor th ing was because i t thought {self so ugly, and how i t tu rned on a ll sides and bowed low when the wild ducks flew by, till a t last in fear and hunger i t stole into a h u t where lived an old woman w ith her ca t and hen.“ Gould the stranger p u rr o r lay eggs 7” they asked, and when they found i t could do neither, and only talked of the joy o f swimming, they were filled w ith contempt.

“ B u t you don’t understand me,” said the little duck. “ U nderstand you, indeed!” answered they. “ W ho in

th e world should understand you i f we do not— we who are so

clever 7”So the duck was obliged to go forth again, and afte r many

misfortunes i t sought the m arsh where i t lay among the reeds, miserable, and h a lf frozen, all w inter long. B u t when the lovely spring came, i t felt one m orning a strange im pulse to rise, and it spread its wings and flew aw ay till i t alighted on a stream in a beautiful garden where stately swans were sailing.«< A h !” i t exclaimed, “ the royal b irds will k ill me, bu t i t is better to die so than to be pecked to death in the farm -yard, or to be devoured by the ca t,” and bending its head with shame i t was moving tow ard them when i t saw its own reflection in the w ater, and lo ! it, too, was a swan ! A nd the other swans came to welcome it, and the children who were feeding them cried out, “There is another !”— W ho has not read the charm ­

ing story 7 .I f “ U gly D ucks” were confined to the farm -yard, we m ight

drop a passing tear upon the page and forget it, b u t they m ay be found everywhere among men and women. W e are too ap t to think th a t th a t is only r ig h t, and desirable which con­forms to the standard we have created from our own peculiar character and circum stances; in other words, v irtua lly to say , W hat is like me and mine is good and tru e ; w hat is unlike is poor and false. A nd if, like the duck in the story, the one who is thus judged ventures to say, “ B u t you do not under­stand me,” we are ready to answer with the ca t and hen, “ U n­derstand you, indeed! W ho in the world should understand you i f we do not— we who are so clever ! •

• There is nothing which reveals our finite, im perfect natu re more plainly, than this inability to look a t others except through the medium o f our ow irexperience and surroundings. Such an eternal 1 as some o f us see in all books and people ! There m ust o f necessity be criterions and standards o f judg­m ent, bu t they are not worthy o f the nam e unless they a re deep enough and broad enough to apply to every form o f life. T h a t is the noblest soul, which, w ithout losing its balance an d integrity, can ta k e in the personality o f others so as to judge them from the ir cen tre^po in t o f view, as well as from its own.

I f a ll the Ugly D ucks th a t have ever lived could tell the ir story, w hat revelations we should have. How m any o f the tru est and best have; had to endure a long persecution and neglect till a t la s t the-, sp ring m orning cam e when they gained the ir swau-wings, (perhaps it was only in dying) and flew to • som egealm o f d e lig h t! How m any children there are whose parents djKtiot in the least understand them , ( it is strange how swan’s eggs get into duck’s nests and, w hat is oftener the case, i t is alm ost as strange, (though th is second wonder is hard ly relevant) how duck’s eggs get into swan’s nests— but these are questions for philosophers) who are torm ented by the ir brothers and sisters and called “ odd” and “ queer” by their aunts and uncles, until in an over-burdened day they escape out o f the paren ta l yard , and find in another sphere the sym ­pathy which they have always lacked a t home. A nd in the larger fam ily o f t h e .neighborhood and community, how many men and women there are who suffer from a like injus­

t ic e ! 'W h a t an absurdity i t would be thought i f we treated things,

in th is respect, as we trea t people. Im agine a na tu ra lis t m a­k ing such an entry as this in his journal :

“ This morning in my ram bles I found a curious flower. I t had, I believe, beauty o f form and color, an d possessed a cer­ta in odor which was not d isagreeable; b u t inasmuch as uone o f my books have mentioned it, and it was conformed to no known species; as i t had neither tbe fragrance o f the lily, nor the hue o f the rose; as it did not droop like the violet nor open wide like the daisy, I thought i t not worth my while to to preserve and describe i t .” O r,

'* In the depths o f the forest I saw a new and singular b ird . I t w a s of graceful proportions and pleasant song; buf. as no ornithologist has spoken o f it, and as in voice and plum age it w as wholly unlike the nightingale, the th rush or the oriole, or any o f the b irds w ith which we are fam iliar, I did not take the trouble to make a drawing o f it, or to trace it to its nest and learn its hab its.”

N o. W e never shall read such notes as these. A new va­rie ty in p lan ts o r anim als makes a na tu ra lis t h a lf wild with jov, and every peculiarity is studied and portrayed w ith the u tm ost care. I t is only when in human society an individual appears whose faculties are in unusual combinations, and who lives in some sense a new and original life, th a t we look on w ith indifferent wonder, o r grow antagonistic and blame and despise. W e are C hristian to nature , b u t heathen to man.

This is not a plea for singularity in itself— much less for tbe affeotation o f i t ; i t is only a desire th a t all may be left u n ­molested, nay, m ay be assisted to become w hat God in the ir creation intended they should be. The era through which the w orld has been and is still passing, is the E ra o f N ational and P o litica l L iberty . The nobler e ra which is dawning, and for which the first was b u t a p reparation, is the E ra o f the L iber­ty o f the Ind iv idual. A nd when th a t day appears,— as in summer, under the common conditions o f growth— ligh t and h ea t and m oisture, all the plants o f the earth spring into life__taH trees and lowly shrubs and gay flowers and tw iningvines and clinging mosses— each drawing its own nourishm ent from the soil, undisturbed by o thers— so, then, under the com­m on conditions o f spiritual growth— love and tru th and joy, th e race shall come to a loftier living, each helping ra th e r th a n h indering the other, and the very a ir they breathe shall be th a t C hristian charity which “ thinketh no evil,” and « Righteousness and P eace shall kiss each other” in the sum­

m er o f G o d !T o a ll U gly D ucks, everyw here— G re e tin g ! and a word o f

cheer b y the w ay. D o not be saddened or annoyed by tbe sligh ts and misconceptions o f society. Society’s measurements

a re for ducks alone, and are qu ite too narrow for swans. R e ­member, also, th a t is only ducks who criticize and sneer. W hen you reach the stream where swans are sailing, they will re ­cognize you, and welcome you, and give you joy. T se heart then, for w hat o f w inter yet rem ains ; and ere long there will come th a t spring m orning when you shall spread your wings and fly to a realm where you shall find both love and apprecia tion .— Independent.

A V I S I O N .A s I was Eeated by myself, m editating upon the different

phases in which human nature presented itse lf to me, I lost, in a m easure, the consciousness o f externals, became entranced, and w andered am id the avenues of my inner being, and through them to the in terior world. H ere I was met by a beautiful fem ale; she was o f medium s ta tu re ; her h a ir was brown ; her eyes, dark, with a most intense expression, y e t altogether mild, beaming forth love and purity . She was clothed in white, her dress, loose and flowing, confined a t the w aist by a silken sash. Upon her head she wore a w reath o f delicate white flowers, artistically arranged w ith fine sprigs o f green, from under which her h a ir hung in wavy ringlets, even down to her drooping shoulders,— she was graceful and winning in her m ovem ents; and, for a tim e I was overpowered by her su­perior beauty. ■

A fter gazing a t her for a moment, I becam e conscious of my awkwardness in thus meeting her, and was about to stam m er out some excuse for m y seeming ignorance, when she, (evi­dently seeing the s ta te o f my mind) gently offered me her hand, which an irresistible im pulse led me to ta k e ; then look­ing kindly upon me she said, “ D augh ter o f earth , I see your longings to understand human natu re in its reality ; to behold i t stripped o f its seeming, its faise expressiops; and I was drawn to you a t th is tim e to give you a lesson— you m ay not understand all o f its significance, bu t I will m ake it as clear to you as you r inner sigh t will perm it.”

I im m ediately obeyed, my unknown teacher keeping a short distance in advance o f me, for I did not feel pure enough to come within the atm osphere which surrounded her. She led me on through fields, luxurian t in the ir growth, b rillian t in the ir native green ; now and then, a garden, p lanted with the most lovely flowers I ever beheld, m et my view. I would have stopped to adm ire them and pluck a few as a remem­brance o f their home ; b u t th is I was not perm itted to do, as my teacher and guide moved on.

A t last we came to a vast plain ; although flat in appearance, i t did not w eary the eye, b u t seemed to possess a beau ty pecu­liar to itself. U pon th is p lain there stood a tem ple ; i t was massive and grand ; its arch itecture was o f a new order, com­bining strength and artistic design. A fter pausing a while, we asceneded the steps leading to the entrance o f i t ; as we entered the vestibule, I perceived a b rig h t ligh t stream ing from the in terior o f the tem ple. I started back, bu t my guide beckoned me on. E n tering a v ast room, so vast th a t 1 was bewildered, I saw upon the walls thereof, w hat appeared to be diagram s w ith figures o f hum an forms upon them . They did not seem mtoionless, however, for whenever my guide tu rned her eyes tow ards any p articu la r one, i t became anim a- m ated and seemed to ac t out its representation.

I beheld the smooth-tongued hypocrite, stripped o f his fine exterior and glossy words ; they were o f no effect. The sac­erdotal robes o f priest no longer hid his manifold sins. The polish o f the libertine became dim, and the darkness o f his n a tu re was as b lack vapor about him . E ovy , jealousy and deception were apparen t to the view ; no m atte r how pure the ex terio r seemed, how arden t the profession of tru th and good­ness. Also, the down-trodden and despised threw off their chains and the ir garm ents of poverty and m any a pure form arose above them as the butterfly emerges from the ungainly chrysalis. I saw many a one, whom, the inhabitants o f ea rth pass by as unworthy o f notice, o r o f little account, transfig ured into the likeness o f an angelic n a tu re ; and so every phase o f life as represented in hum an natu re was given to

me.I t becam e a source o f wonder to me, th a t when m y guide

looked a t a diagram , i t . moved and showed its true form be­neath the representative one. R eading my mind, and my de sire to understand this m ystery, she said : “ I have shown you m any things which you already know and which have puzzled your mind. I will now tell you how to detect the true from the false, the genuinCs from the counterfeit. W ithin your own nature , you have a power which needs only cultivation to en­able you to posress an insight into the characters o f all per sons whom you m ay m eet in your daily walk. I t is by the developm ent o f th a t power th a t I cause all on whom I fix my attention , to present to me the ir undisguised characters, the ir rea l selves. This power is the b irth righ t o f each hum an soul, and it rem ains w ith each soul to take possession o f it. Then, child o f earth , delay no longer to m ake th a t power yours, which you so earnestly desire ; and, in the cu ltivation o f it, do not forget to harmonize your own being, so tha t i t m ay be come transparen t to the view of a ll.”

I bowed my head in acknowledgement o f her kindness, for I felt deeply and sincerely the tru th thus delivered to me, and I made a solemn vow in the presence o f this superior being, to perfect m yself and become a possessor o f this magical yet natu ra l power. A b b y

N othing is more am iable than true modesty, and nothing more contemptible than th a t which is false ; the one guards virtue, the other betrays it. T rue modesty is ashamed to do anything th a t is repugnant to r ig h t reason ; false modesty is ashamed to do anything th a t is opposite to the hum or o f those with whom the p arty converses.

Chevreau, in his h istory of the world, informs us tha t it was created on the sixth o f Septem ber, on a F riday , a little a fte r four o’clock in the afternoon.

This accounts for the ea rth ’s being Euch an unhappy little planet— doomed to destruction from its b irth . I t was made on an unlucky day.
