OVER PRESSURIZED LUBE/FILTER SYSTEM

• From time to time, filters are returned because the filter is bloated (swollen) or the gasket was found pushed out of the retaining groove. The tendency is to think this is a filter problem.

• This problem is caused by an over pressurized lube system.

• The lube system pressure is controlled by a pressure regulating valve. Occasionally, the regulating valve could stick in the closed position causing a pressure spike.

• The result is the filter appears to be swollen and possibly the gasket was pushed out of its groove.

DENTED FILTERS & THEIR EFFECTS

• Filter manufacturers often receive used filters, being returned due to a crack in a filter can.

• In many cases the crack is located within or near a dent in the can.

• Once dented, the can becomes more susceptible to fatigue.

• The fatigue to the material results from pressure pulses within the system.

• The metal in the dented area is continually flexing in and out in response to the system pressure pulses.

• Over a period of time the metal will fatigue to the point of cracking, which will result in a leak.
