Have you ever had two employees who are constantly frustrated byone another?
The normal approach to resolve employees conflicting is to 'knocktheir heads together' and tell them to get on with it.
But have you considered a more probing approach? Have youconsidered tapping into the psychology of the two employees styles?
Luckily, you don't have to be a Chartered Psychologist to tap intoyour teams psyche and solve this common company culture issue.
DIAGNOSING INDIVIDUALS' DIFFERENTSTYLES
HOW CAN YOU DIAGNOSE AN EMPLOYEES' STYLE?
The Myers-Briggs (or MBTI) is a tool that provides a description ofhow people not only operate in the working world but in every aspect oftheir lives. The test is made up of 4 dimensions......
1. What turns them on (Extrovert vs Introvert)2. What they pay attention to (Sensing vs Intuition)3. How they make decisions (Thinking vs feeling)4. How they live and work (Judgement vs Perception)
REMEMBER....Now, let us level with you....
The MBTI cannot forecast job performance or marriage happiness. BUTwe are not suggesting that you use the MBTI for that. Use it to gain abasic understanding of what makes your team 'tick'.
If you know, understand and can appreciate what 'type' of person youremployee is, you will be able to tailor how you interact with that individualand maximise your working relationship
BRINGING OPPOSITE 'TYPES' TOGETHER
Get your team to take the test and share their results. Pair opposite'types' into groups and get them to have a discussion on how theywork, why they behave in certain ways, what works well and whatcould be done better.
This should enable each 'type' to understand how the opposite worksand how they can work together effectively.
By completing this exercise you should be able to understand why twoemployees are not working well together and get them to manage howthey can improve their relationship.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR EMPLOYEES
The MBTI has four dimensions to it. Byanswering questions each employee will beassigned a letter from each dimension andthis will create a formula to help categorisethe employees into one of the 16 'types'.
For a more detail description of each result, check out the official Myers-Briggs website
From just reading these 'types' you mightalready have some ideas as to why two people in
your team are not operating effectively. Getthem to take the on-line quiz to confirm yourthoughts and also ask them to reflect on the
results too.
In ConclusionIf you are having problems such as bickering staff, ratherthan 'knocking their heads together', perhaps try thisapproach.
Having an insight into an employees style can help youavoid and manage misunderstandings that derive frompeople's differences.
