At the beginning of the semester we have been visiting some museums around London. The first

one was the Victoria & Albert Museum, in South Kensington. In the world’s largest museum of

art and design we were asked to find something interesting between ceramics, glass,

ironworks, sculptures, prints, drawings and a lot of other works. So once we found

out what we liked, we had to make a small research, writing 200 words

and the photo of the object chosen.

V & A MUSEUM

Patrick Gwynne’s project is exhibited like a plastic model at the architecture sector in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The actual realization of this house has never been achieved, remaining therefore just a project. In 1960, the British architect Gwynne, designed the house which was supposted to be built up on a small site in Blackheat. Gwynne, in his project, has been inspired by the American architect Richard Fuller and his ‘Dymaxion’ house, where the masts supported the roof of the hexagonal aluminium house. So, this is the main and characteristic thing of this house. In fact, the living and sleeping areas are divided between circular units: each one has its own mast that support the roof, which originally raised automatically on eletric motors. What can be seen is a plastic model, where this great idea is summarized, made with painted wood, paper, card, perspex, wire and wire wool. Another thing to point out is the fact that in this project Gwynne wanted to emphasise the relationship between technology and the enviroment all around: water features into these garden plots and unusual architectural forms pull together to create amazing sets.

TATE MODERN

The second museum we visited was the modern art gallery of Tate Modern.

As in the Victoria & Albert Museum, we were asked to find

two interesting pieces of art and make

connections between them.

When I look at these two paintings themost emotional thing that I can see and feel is this kind of unreal atmosphere allaround me.What I want to say is that these picturespointed out a sense of infinity, where theperson who is standing in front of themcan feel himself into a surreal world. It’s like getting lost in a dream where you can detach yourself from the reality, fromthe day to day life. TO A SUMMER’S DAY - BRIDGET RILEY 1980

In the Bridget Riley’s painting, coloured stripes cross along a common band reminding the shape of ribbons, to create a wavy pattern. If you try to follow a stripe with your eyes, you’ll realize that is quite impossible because the optic effect of the canvas make it difficult: the whole picture seems to move and gives a sense of dispersion and infinity.

In the Yves Tanguy’s oil painting the sensation of infinity and isolation iseven more evident than in the Bridget’s one.The few objects in the foreground are not well defined with curved and abstracted forms, that also show the dream sense and the detachment from the reality. In the background, the fading of colour from the light blue to thewhite and black highlights theinfinity and gives a sensation of calmand peace where you canjust get lost into your own world.

WHITECHAPEL GALLERY

After the visit to the Tate

Modern, we went to the art

gallery of Whitechapel. It was

basically a day where we had to

look around and gather some

ideas for the brochure project

starting the following week.

THE BROCHURE PROJECT

The brochure project was the first important work that we were asked to do in terms of time

spent on one single assignment. The tutors divided us into different groups and at end of

the project all the students had to sustain a presentation, talking about the process

and how we get to the final piece. A careful research of pictures was also

included in a moodboard, meant to help people understanding better

the intention of the work.

The Moodboard Step

Beyond choosing the theme, the brochure project uncluded a process in wich we had to select a range of photos to explain our thoughts. The one above was the first moodboard we made but unfortunately we

have been told the theme wasn’t good enoug. Therefore we changed our topic.

The Moodboard Step

This mooboard was the final one. We changed the topic talking about the severity of pollution as we titled the project. The pictures we chose are really significant and we tried to be provocative with them, even if

our theme doesn’t touch all the kind of pollution you can see in these photos.

Factories, Lancashire ( L S Lowry )This picture was selected to be the first, because it sums up the whole title in a painting. Even though we moved on from there, we are still using a lot of energy for industry and modern living. We are using Docklands beacuse it shows the streigth and height of the British economy at that time. It shows the faith we have in our economy and whether we should keep it the economy and the global situation

22 23

BP Carson Refinery, California ( Mitch Epstein )Mitch Epstein’s current work examines how energy is produced and used in the american landscape. In fact, the American flag is usually used as a symbol of pride, which seems to be showing the ignorance of the negative effects of industrialism. Buckingham Palace was choosen becuase it’s an obvious symbol of patriotism with strong influences.24 25

Towering Ambition ( Fay-Ross Magenty )This piece shows a charcoal drawing depicting cranes and new structures. We picked Stradford because the piece is about the redevelopment and recostruction of a critical area of London and Stratford is the modern day equivalent of this phenomenon.26 27

Consett, Country Durham 1974 ( Don Mc-Collin )This picture presents people living their own lives during the Second World War.. It depicts a mother who is “walking away” from the industry-based world. Battersea Power Station was choosen because it is a place that hasn’t changed with the time and the large space around it is not being used, therefore leading to waste. 28 29

UNTITLED ( Robert Morris )This sculpture is made of industrial pieces of felt, cut into straight lines and tumbled on their own weight. This piece is all about how things are made and processed. Its a one-off production of felt and involves a lot more energy than a batch, not to mention it is a continuous production. This, as a result, means that it also creates a lot of waste therefore it is dangerous for the enviroment.

200 WORDS ON THE PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

I wanted to develop the photography theme PUBLIC/PRIVATE with an original and different point of view. After having tried to capture a few ideas, my first photo came out unexpectedly: I was having a drink on a friend’s terrace when I saw the reflection of the church steeple in the liquid of my glass; I grabbed my camera to shoot that unusual image. I was very happy about the result, even if I didn’t decide the object, the atmosphere and so on. Therefore all the pictures I present follow this idea which at the beginning appeared only like something weird. In fact on that shot I was quite lucky with the light and the position from where I was taking the photo. Despite the first picture was quite easy to achieve, I encountered some difficulties to reproduce it in the others, especially outside where I could not control the lights and had often to cope with harsh light and to get a sharp focus inside the glass. To create a more interesting shot, give some mood and a personal touch I used different colours in the water.I included the final work as well as the process how to achieve it.

THE ESSAY

The essay was the first individual assaignment we must hand in after the Christmas

break. We were asked to write 2000 words about something interesting, choosing

from 3 different topics: study a work of architecture in relation to its period;

compare a work of architecture to a work of other art; compare to

movements of modern art/architecture.

PECHA KUCHA

My pecha kucha presentation points out the particular influence which Palladio had in

Architecture. I decided to design and present it having always the same layout and colours to give

an impression of harmony and balance according to palladian concepts.
