A M E S S A G E F R O M T H E C H A I R O F T H E B O A R D O F T R U S T E E S

Thank you for joining us on this very special evening, as the Columbus Symphony celebrates the joy of music and its critical role in enriching the education and growth of central Ohio’s children.

The Columbus Symphony is dedicated to educating and entertaining people of all ages by fostering talent, creating future audiences, nurturing intellectual development, and sparking creativity in our K-12 students, families, and teachers. Building on a tradition of excellence in music education that goes back over 66 years, we are deeply committed to ensuring that learners of all ages can grow through the incredible, transformative power of great music.

Our K-12 education programs include Concerts for Kids; Young People’s Concerts in the Ohio Theatre; six Youth Orchestras, including the tuition-free Columbus All City Orchestra for Columbus Citys Schools students in grades 9-12; free Concerts in Schools for Columbus elementary students; Mindful Musical Moments; in-school instruction and mentoring by CSO musicians through Musicians in Schools; Backstage Tours; and the Young Musician’s Competition and Young Musician’s Showcase.

We are strengthening our partnerships with local public school districts to enrich central Ohio K-12 students’ learning, especially those serving students from low-income, underserved neighborhoods and populations. In response to recent changes eliminating local schools’ support for student field trips, we are working to ensure that students in underserved districts continue to benefit from Columbus Symphony programs such as Young People’s Concerts in the Ohio Theatre, with targeted fundraising to support student tickets, study guides, and bus transportation.

Demand for our programs continues to grow: CSO education programs served over 23,000 children in 2017-2018, a 33% increase over the previous year, and a 52% increase from 2015-2016.

By supporting tonight’s benefit concert, you are helping to ensure that the Columbus Symphony can continue to offer education programs that are meaningful, relevant, and meeting community needs. All proceeds from this evening will directly benefit CSO education programs for K-12 students from throughout central Ohio.

We sincerely appreciate your support, which will have life-long impact on the children in our community. Thank you for joining us for Columbus Symphony Cares About Kids.

Sincerely,

Lisa Barton Chair, Columbus Symphony Board of Trustees

Respected and admired by audiences and musicians alike, Rossen Milanov is currently the music director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO), Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Princeton Symphony Orchestra, and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias (OSPA) in Spain.

In 2017, Milanov received an Arts Prize from The Columbus Foundation for presenting Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony as part of the CSO’s 2017 Picnic with the Pops summer series. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded its reach by connecting original programming with community-wide initiatives, such as focusing on women composers and nature conservancy, presenting original festivals, and supporting and commissioning new music.

Milanov has established himself as a conductor with considerable national and international presence, appearing with the Colorado, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Seattle, and Fort Worth symphonies, as well as the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center and Link Up education projects with Carnegie Hall featuring the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Civic Orchestra in Chicago.

Internationally, he has collaborated with BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra de la Suisse Romand, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Aalborg, Latvian, and Hungarian National Symphony Orchestras, Slovenain Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the orchestras in Toronto, Vancouver, KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic (South Africa), Mexico, Colombia, Sao Paolo, Belo Horizonte, and New Zealand. In the Far East, he has appeared with NHK, Sapporo, Tokyo, and Singapore Symphonies, and the Malaysian and Hong Kong Philharmonics.

Noted for his versatility, Milanov is also a welcomed presence in the worlds of opera and ballet. He has collaborated with Komische Oper Berlin for Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtzensk), Opera Oviedo for the Spanish premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Mazzepa and Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle (awarded best Spanish production for 2015), and Opera Columbus for Verdi’s La Traviata.

An experienced ballet conductor, he has been seen at New York City Ballet and collaborated with some of the best-known choreographers of our time, such Mats Ek, Benjamin Millepied, and most recently, Alexei Ratmansky in the critically acclaimed revival of Swan Lake in Zurich with the Zurich Ballet, and in Paris with La Scala Ballet.

Lopera is in his first season as assistant conductor of the Columbus Symphony, has directed performances with orchestras such as the Oregon Symphony, Toledo Symphony, New World Symphony, and Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra, as well at summer festivals, including the National Repertory Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. In October 2017, Lopera covered a series of concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel and Carlos Miguel Prieto.

At the international level, he has performed with the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra and the EAFIT Symphony Orchestra in his home country of Colombia, among others. He has also presented concerts and collaborated with both professional and youth orchestras throughout Central and South America, including organizations in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Honduras. In 2012, Lopera was appointed music director of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony in Portland, where he oversaw a program with more than 450 students, 12 ensembles, and 10 conducting staff.

In recognition of his contributions to Portland, he received the Portland Monthly Award, Rising Star Award, and Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber Bravo Award. Additional honors include the Orgullo Colombiano Award and Egresados Que Inspiran from EAFIT University, both received in 2017.

Lopera has studied and worked with some of the most outstanding professional artists in the field, including Hugh Wolff, Andrew Litton, David Loebel, Carlos Kalmar, Ludovic Morlot, and Marin Alsop. He earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from New England Conservatory.

Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin was born and raised on Columbus’ Southside to a family that has been highly engaged in their neighborhood. In the past year, Council President Hardin led the fight to double public funding for Columbus artists and arts organizations, especially in the mission to build our creative and cultural economy, as well as to increase access for local youth.

The new funding plan will help stabilize major civic institutions, spur economic activity, invigorate the culture of Columbus, and open the doors to a new generation of kids to enjoy our world-class facilities and performing arts organizations. Council President Hardin focuses on inclusive growth through equitable transportation solutions, small business, entrepreneurs, and innovation. President Hardin is especially interested in bridging opportunity gaps for boys and young men of color. President Hardin co-chairs the insight2050 Corridor Concepts project, which is a study to determine how to support sustainable growth through transit and affordable development strategies. Understanding the racial disparities that impact communities of color every day, Council President Hardin works with Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and with former-Mayor Michael B. Coleman on projects like My Brother’s Keeper, a local arm of the national program started by President Barack Obama. This organization aims to bridge opportunity gaps for young men of color through partnerships and collective action. Council President Hardin lives in the historic King-Lincoln District and worships at Mount Olivet Baptist Church.
