geleentheid noem Gary Roberts

aan Gerrie Jacobs dat hy hom

genomineer het vir die ‘NHPA

Lifeme Achievement Award’.

‘n AAAAmptelike uitnodiging word

in Meimaand ontvang. Na baie

wik en weeg word besluit dat

hierdie ‘n besonderse toeken-

ning en eer is.—nie net vir Ger-

rie self nie, maar ook vir Jukskei

as sport.

IIIIn die tussentyd beves+g Kevin

Lewis dat hulle as organiseerd-

ers ook vir Charisma de Bruin

nooi om as deelnemer aan die

World Horseshoes deel te neem.

‘n FFFFondsinsameling is deur Ger-

rie geloods en is ons dankbaar

dat soveel persone hieraan

deelgeneem het sodat ‘n groot

gedeelte van haar vlug– asook

verbly2oste hieruit betaal kon

word.

AAAAs gesin was daar lankal reeds

beplan aan ‘n Europese

vakansie. Na afloop van die drie

weke toer in Europa, het ons

skaars geland en wasgoed

gewas om weer die vol-

gende dag na die VSA te

reis.

VVVVrydag 21 Julie vlieg ons

via Frankfurt en Denver na

St George.

During this event, Gary Roberts

men�oned it to Gerrie Jacobs

that he nominated him for the

'NHPA Life�me Achievement

Award'.

AAAAn official invita�on was re-

ceived in May. A)er many dis-

cussions it was decided that this

is a special award and honour.

Not only for Gerrie himself, but

also for Jukskei as sport.

In the meanwhile, Kevin Lewis

confirms that they as organizers

also invite Charisma de Bruin to

par�cipate in the World Horse-

shoes.

A A A A fundraiser was launched by

Gerrie and we are grateful that

so many people took part in this

so that a large por�on of her

flight and accommoda�on costs

could be paid.

WWWWe as a family actually planned

a holiday visi�ng Europe. A)er

the three-week tour in Europe,

we barely landed and laundry to

once again travel the next day to

the USA.

DDDDie bykans 20 uur lange vlugte het ons reg+g soos

gekreukelde wasgoed laat voel toe ons daar af-

klim. Ons word egter hartlik ontvang deur Gary,

Casey en Travis wat ons hotel toe vat. Na ‘n lekker

bad en vars klere voel ons beter.

TTTTravis kom haal Charisma Sondagoggend vroeg om

haar so bietjie touwys te maak tov die horseshoes.

Liefste Casey en Gail gee aan haar ‘n paar horse-

shoes waarmee sy ‘n beter ‘flip’ kan gooi asook

handskoene sodat sy nie haar hande deurgooi nie.

Na ‘n heerlike middagete saam met Gary, O:e

Reno en die Sluyse het ons gereed gemaak vir die

aand se funksie.

MMMMet ons aankoms by die funksie, het

Stuart Sipma (President van die NHPA)

ons baie spesiaal laat voel. Die

gesinne van Gary Roberts, die Sluyse,

Kevin Lewis asook Seth Ohms het ons

soos spesiale eregaste laat voel. Toe-

kennings was gemaak aan adminis-

trateurs asook uitstekende spelers en

is afgesluit met die Life+me Achieve-

ment Awards asook die plasing van

lede in die ‘Hall of Fame’.

DDDDie Life+me Achievement Awardtoe-

kenning was aan slegs drie persone

gemaak waarvan Gerrie Jacobs een was. Gerrie

het op sy gebruiklike opregte en vermaaklike wyse

die NHPA bedank asook vir hul deelname aan Juk-

skei as ‘n presisie gooisport. Hierdie toekennings

word nie sommer aan iemand buite die sport

Horseshoes toegeken nie, maar Gerrie se bemoei-

enis met Horseshoes oor die afgelope 30 jaar om

ook Horseshoes se saak by die Olimpiese Komitee

in 2010 te gaan stel, het aan hom hierdie toeken-

ning laat verdien.

OOOO:e Reno, oom van Gary en een van die baanbre-

kers om Jukskei na die VSA te neem, het spesiaal

van Ohio gereis om saam met ons te kuier—

’friends who play together, stay together’.

VVVVan Maandag tot Woensdag het Charisma

deelgeneem aan die Horseshoe kampioenskap in

haar klas. Die kompe+sie was baie sterk. Charis-

ma het ‘n baie goeie ‘ringer’ gemiddeld gehad van

53% en het daarvolgens derde in haar klas geëin-

dig—’n merkwaardige prestasie vir haar wat nie

elke naweek aan die sport deelneem nie. Sy wen 6

van haar 15 wedstryde en dit plaas haar 10de uit

die 15 deelnemers. Dus eindig sy binne die beste

50 van alle vroue (nes Jukskei—almal bo 18 tot

70).

AAAA)er the nearly 20-hour flights we really felt like

creased laundry when we got there. With open

arms we were received by Gary, Casey and Travis

who accompanied us to our hotel for a nice shower

and some fresh clothes.

EEEEarly Sunday morning Travis fetched Charisma for

a training session on the horseshoes before the

tournament starts. Casey and Gail gave Charisma a

pair of horseshoes with which she could throw a

be8er flip, as well as gloves to protect her hands

from all the throwing. A)er a lovely lunch with

Gary, O:e Reno and the Sluyse we prepared for

the evenings event.

UUUUpon arrival our at the func�on, we felt

welcome by Stuart Sipma (President of

NPHA), and like special guests of hon-

our by the families of Gary Roberts, the

Sluyse, Kevin Lewis and Seth Ohms.

Awards were made to administrators

as well as excellent players and end off

with Life�me Achievement Awards and

the placing of members on the Hall of

Fame.

TTTThe Life�me Achievement Awards only

gets awarded to three person, of

whom Gerrie Jacobs was apart. Gerrie

applauded the NHPA in his humble and humoris�c

ways and thank them for their par�cipa�on in Juk-

skei as a precision throwing sport. Usually these

awards aren’t made to people outside the horse-

shoe sport, but was made in excep�on to Gerrie for

his input in horseshoes over the last 30 years to

also present Horseshoes at the Olympic Commi8ee

in 2010.

OOOO:e Reno, uncle of Gary and one of the pioneers

in ge:ng the USA to par�cipate in Jukskei, trav-

elled especially van Ohio to join us on our visit—

’friends who play together, stay together’.

FFFFrom Monday to Wednesday Charisma par�cipat-

ed in the Horseshoe championship in her class. The

compe��on was extremely strong. Charisma

achieved a very good ringer average of 53% and

ended 3de in her class—an excep�onal achieve-

ment for not playing regular

tournaments. She won 6 of

her 15 games and ended 10th

of 15 par�cipants, ending

within the best 50 of all the

women par�cipants (just as in

Jukskei all above 18-70).

DiDiDiDie wenners wen 1500 USD en daarna was daar

nog ‘n elite kompe+sie daarna waartydens hulle

meer as 600 USD kon verower. Hier is beslis ‘n

geleentheid dat ons moontlik meer Horsehoes in

SA kan speel en daar gaan deelneem – ons sal

beslis in die onderskeie klasse kampioene kan

oplewer (en ons uitgawes dek as ons goed genoeg

vaar).

OOOOns het elke dag na afloop van Charisma se

deelname (in meer as 40 grade) buite gaan Jukskei

gooi en is oorval met belangstelling. Kevin en Seth

het ook gehelp en ons het verskeie jonger

‘kadeFe’ en belangstellendes afgerig. Ons sou op

Donderdagoggend agtuur ‘n wedstryd teen Gary

en sy span speel, maar ongelukkig het dit heelnag

gereën en was die bane deurdrenk met modder.

Ons het Vrydagnamiddag lekker saam met Kevin,

Seth en sy vrou Amy en kinders asook ander bel-

angstellendes gespeel. Gary moes binne aan die

Horseshoes deelneem en kon hy nie saam met

ons deelneem aan die vertoonwedstryd nie. Nog-

tans, stel die mense belang en is hulle geïnteres-

seerd in ons sport.

KKKKevin Lewis en sy vrou het uit hul pad gegaan om

vir ons St George se besienswaardighede te wys.

Hulle het ons na die Mormoonse Tabernakel,

die Snow Canyon Park en Tuachan Am-

phiteater geneem. By die teater waar die

berge die ‘backdrop’ vorm het ons die Mam-

ma Mia Musical geniet en dit was ‘n

ongelooflike ervaring. Gary, sy vrou en dogter

het ook moeite gedoen om ons te onthaal. Ca-

sey, Gail en Travis Sluys is werklik vriende wat

uit hul pad gaan om ons te ondersteun en

trakteer en sal lewenslange vriende van Jukskei

wees.

OOOOns het Saterdagmiddag terugvertrek en het ‘n

wonderlike ervaring met die mooi stad St George,

Uber heen en weer, aangename Limonade en lek-

ker geselskap gehad. Ons het Saterdagnag na een

in New York geland en is weer seweuur die vol-

gende oggend na JFK lughawe om Maandagog-

gend in Suid-Afrika te land.

Tien dae van verskillende landskappe, opregte

vriende, uitstekende sportmanskap en ambas-

sadeurskap sal in ons herinneringe bly. Dankie aan

almal wat die toer moontlik gemaak het en al die

Amerikaanse vriende, Facebook SA vriende wat

deurentyd saam met ons getoer het, vir u

meelewng en ondersteuning.

TTTThe winners won 1500 USD which was followed by

an elite compe��on where they stood the chance

to win more than 600 USD. Here is definitely an

opportunity to par�cipate more in Horseshoes in

SA and to go par�cipate in the horseshoe compe�-

�on and deliver champions in the different classes

(ones expenses can easily be covered if you do well

enough).

WWWWe demonstrated Jukskei outside (in more than 40

degrees) every day a)er Charisma’s horseshoe

throwing and received a lot of interest from other

players. Kevin and Seth also assist us and we

coached several younger and interested players.

On Thursday we had a planned game at eight

against Gary and his team but due to rain the pre-

vious night the pitches were unplayable. However,

late Friday a)ernoon we had a lovely game wirh

Kevin, Seth and his wife Amy and their kids as well

as interested players. Unfortunately Gary had to

par�cipate inside in the Horseshoe championship

and couldn’t join in the demonstra�on game. Even

though the people are interested in our sport.

Kevin Lewis and his wife real went out of their way

to show us all the a8rac�ons in St George. Some

of the a8rac�ons we visited included the Mormon

Tabernacle, the Snow Canyon Park and Tuachan

Amphitheatre. What an incredible experience

to watching the Mamma Mia Musical in thea-

tre where the mountains forms the backdrop.

Gary, his wife and daughter also went out of

their way to entertain us. As well as Casey, Gail

and Travis Sluyse who are truly friends that

went out of their way to support us and will be

lifelong friends of Jukskei.

On Saturday the trip back to SA started with won-

derful experiences of the beau�ful city of St

George. Uber all over, lovely lemonade and com-

pany. We landed Saturday night a)er one in New

York and le) again at seven the next morning to

the JFK airport to be back in SA the Monday morn-

ing.

A trip of ten days through different sceneries, sin-

cere friends, outstanding sportsmanship and am-

bassadorship will always stay in our memories.

2017 SA Meesterstoernooi

Die SA Meesterstoernooi is gespeel in heerlike

jukskeiweer met dalk een dag se bietjie koue en

lieflike reën waaroor daar nie gekla was nie.

Die toernooi het afgeskop met die Pruimpie Bo-

tha Tripstoernooi die Maandag. ‘n Ongelooflike

lekkerte om soveel van ons Senior Spelers te sien

speel.

Baie geluk aan die Meesterskomitee met nog ‘n

suksesvolle Meesterstoernooi aangebied.

2017 SA Masters Tournament

The SA Masters Tournament was played in lovely

jukskei weather with only one day that was a li8le

bit cold and a bit raining—not that we can com-

plain.

The tournament kicked off with the Pruimpie Bo-

tha Tournament the Monday. What a nice feeling

to see so much of our Senior players playing.

Well done to the Master Commi8ee with another

successful Masters tournament.

Die Road Runner (Skeidsregter) tydens die

Meesterstoernooi

Dit blyk dat die ‘Road Runner’ dit tydens die af-

gelope SA Meesterstoernooi ‘n paar keer moes

ontgeld het.

Storie 1:

‘n Span van KZN was nooit ten gunste van sy

me+ng en finale besluit nie. Hulle besluit toe om

hom ‘n streep te trek. Na afloop van ‘n wedstryd

word skeie gepak en word hy geroep om te kom

meet. So ampertjies was hy gevang,

maar was weereens die span een

voor.

Storie 2:

Tydens die proewe tussen die Groot-

meesters Vrouespanne besluit die

twee kapteins (ek hou maar hulle

name anoniem) om hom ‘n liederlike

streep te trek. Hy word geroep om

te kom meet en gaan sit die twee

kapteins weerskant van die sandput

om op sy versoek seker te maak die

toutjie is reguit gespan. Die verskil is

die twee gaan sit leFerlik langs die

sandgat—lekker wydsbeen. Hy vra

hulle om bietjie verder te sit, want hoe kan hulle

so sien die toutjie is reguit. Daar word toe aan

hom verduidelik met handgebare dat hulle kan

sien die toutjie loop reguit tussen en onderdeur

hulle bene. Die arme skeidsregter het nie geweet

wat om daarop te sê nie.

Storie 3:

Op die laaste dag kry hy ‘n assistant. JJ van die

Weermag bied ongevraagd sy hulp aan. As ‘n

skeidsregter benodig word, gryp JJ die toerus+ng-

tassie en hardloop solank vooruit, gee die kwassies

aan spelers om solank skoon te maak om die

knopies en meld die skeidsregter is oppad. Dit was

groot pret—dankie julle twee vir hierdie pret op

die baan.

The Road Runner (Umpire) during the Mas-

ters Tournament

Looks like the “Road Runner” had to pay the price

a few �mes during the Masters Tournament.

Story 1:

A team from KZN wasn’t happy with his measuring

and final decision, so they decided to play a prank

on him. A)er the game they stacked their skey’s

and called him for a measurement. He was almost

caught out but was the team one ahead again.

Story 2:

During the trails of the Great Master

Women teams the captains (be8er

for us to keep the names anonymous)

of the two teams decided to prank

him for good. He got called out to

measure and the two captains decid-

ed to go sit on both sides of the pitch

to be ready to assist to make sure the

line is straight on his request. The

difference was the literally went and

sit down next to the pitch—legs wide

spread. He requested them to sit

back a bit, because how can they see

if the line is straight so close by. With

hand signals and all they explained that they can

see the line running straight through and under

their legs. The poor umpire had no response to

their explana�on.

Story 3:

On the last day he got an assistant. JJ from the Ar-

my offer unsolicited assistance. On request of an

umpire, JJ grab the instrument case and run ahead.

Giving the brushes to players to clean the bu8ons

and report the umpire is on his way. It was great

fun thank you to the two of you for this fun on the

pitches.

The only discipline that lasts is self-discipline!
