2. Summary 3. Number the Stars is the fictional story ofAnnemarie Johansen, who is growing up inDenmark during WWII. The story takes place during the third year ofthe Nazi occupation in Denmark. Times have been tough and uneasy foreveryone in Copenhagen for years becauseof food shortages and the constant presenceof the Nazi soldiers in the city. 4. Annemaries best friend, Ellen Rosen, and herfamily are Jewish, so the Nazi soldiers makethe Rosens and the rest of Jewish peopleliving in Copenhagen incredibly uneasy. When Germany institutes the Jewishrelocation policy, Annemarie and her familymust find ways to keep Ellen, her family, andthe rest of the Jewish people of Denmarksafe. 5. Annemarie must face her toughest test ofbravery in order to keep her friend safe.Annemarie and her family will risk their ownsafety in order to help the rest of the Jewishpeople of Denmark escape to Sweden. 6. About the Author 7. Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1937 inHonolulu, Hawaii. She has two siblings and is the middle child. Lois discovered that she wanted to be awriter at a young age. 8. Lois Lowry has written several books withvarious themes, but most of her booksemphasize the importance of humanconnection. Our group enjoyed this book, and we wouldteach it in our classrooms. 11.
