Digital Do’s and Don’ts Digital Do’ s and Don’ts VIRTUALLY A REALITY: Digitising Your Film Festival Monday, 19 October 2009 at Royal Society of Arts Lucy Hutton – ACE Digital Opportunities Research Programme (With many thanks to Charles Beckett) Do Don’t Give people opportunities to talk to you, and (wherever possible) help out. Don’t put up pay‐walls. Give people opportunities to talk to you, and (wherever possible) help out. Don’t close down discussion/exchange (unless it’s genuinely abusive or unlawful. Do be flexible – think about what your audience wants, not what you want. Don’t think ‘we sell paper’ or ‘we sell tickets’ or ‘we’ve always done it this way’ or we are a festival, or a book publisher, or a theatre’ “When you see something that's taking advantage of new technology to give people something they want that they couldn't have before, you're probably looking at a winner. And when you see something that's merely reacting to new technology in an attempt to preserve some existing source of revenue, you're probably looking at a loser.” Paul Graham (www.paulgraham.com) Hannah Rudman – Digital & Environmental sustainability development strategist and Lead Consultant of AmbITion Do Don’t Consult digital natives about your digital development ‐ is there space for one on your board? Be a faceless organisation on any social network. Think about your "off‐content" ‐ what is interesting, could it be digitised? Yell more to sell more online. Enter/start the dialogue, don't just broadcast, and only do it on the platforms that actually suit you! Think about your whole organisation ‐ business models, operations and artistic content ‐ when considering the impacts and benefits of any digital development. Think that your website is your web presence. It isn't ‐ your presence is everywhere your content is shared or where people talk about you!
