File Formats

Page 3: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

Raster Graphics• They are made of bitmaps

and they’re from pixels. • Bitmaps separate an image

into millions of little squares.• These squares show the

different colours in the image• They have a fixed resolution

(300dpi is the set resolution in photoshop), resulting in distortion when resizing.

Page 4: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

Vector Graphics

• They are made up of paths, made from a defined start and end, curve, points and angles.

• The path can become a line, square, triangle or a curvy shape

• An advantage vectors have over bitmaps is that vectors don’t lose quality when distorted and made into different scales.

• A disadvantage is that the file save size is a lot bigger than a bitmap, so not ideal to be used for websites on the internet as it slows it down.

Page 5: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

JPEGStands For Joint Photographic Expert Group

Used For Photographs and web formats

Advantage It’s a small file, takes up less space. Ideal to use for websites and the internet as the small file means it doesn’t slow the internet down.

Disadvantage Loses quality with multiple edits due to compression and recompression every time it is opened and closed.

Page 6: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

TIFFStands For Tagged image file format

Used For Desk top publishing, Adobe InDesign saved as TIFF

Advantage Doesn’t lose quality when opened and closed, unlike a JPEG.

Disadvantage Big files, need lots of storage space, will slow computers, software and internet down.

Page 7: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

PSDStands For Photoshop document

Used For Image manipulation

Advantage Saves layers and page formatting It also supports transparency

Disadvantage Big files, need lots of storage space.Only useful in photoshop so it won’t open in any other format, so people who don’t own photoshop cannot access the image.

Page 8: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

AIStands For Adobe illustrator

Used For Logo creation, graphics to represent company logo.

Advantage Can be scaled big and small without the image becoming pixelated.

Disadvantage Limited software, files can only be opened in certain software. So if someone doesn’t own the correct software they cannot open the image.

Page 9: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

3DSStands For 3D Studio

Used For 3D modelling, animation and rendering

Advantage Industry standard format, so most software allows this to be viewed. Can be used for moving images and films and video games.

Disadvantage Big file saves, need a lot of storage to be able to save files.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? We added a lot of detail to make it look 3D and realistic. The colours we used were also very accurate.

What would you improve if you did it again? I would have probably increased the opacity on some of the colours that I didn’t want to stand out so much. Some colours such as the contouring on her cheeks don’t look natural the way they are but if we increased the opacity they would blend in more with the rest of her face.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? I liked that the letters were thick and close enough together to get a clear picture of the face in the image. We used the colour orange in our text to represent the title of the film that is being referred to.

What would you improve if you did it again? I would have liked to make the line between the orange and the black a lot less sharp. Next time we could spend a bit more time choosing a font that was a bit more exciting, as the one we used looks quite plain.

Evaluation

What did you like about your image? I like the two very distinct patterns we used, and how much they contrast. There are several patterns going on, though we have managed to make everything tie in well together so it doesn’t look over crowded. All of the colours we used also work really nicely together. The font is interesting, and I like the way we have made the letters all different sizes so that everything fits in the circle.

What would you improve if you did it again? I may have left the background white, or perhaps just a different colour other than black.

Content

The idea I have gone with is one where I will use an image of MF Doom’s mask, with the album artwork of Clams Casinos Instrumentals 2 cut inside it. I will also lower the opacity of the colour from the album artwork so you can see the shadowing of the mask, so you can see the shape better. Then I will add ‘Bookfiend’, the name of one of the songs by MF Doom and Clams Casino. The writing will be in a sort of calligraphy style, which will curve around my design.

Export Format

PNG

Advantages; Its compatible with RedBubble and can save transparency and lowered opacity Disadvantages; It’s a larger file size than similar formats such as JPEG

Proposal

Deadline

1st October 2013

Monday Tuesday Wednesday

I will plan the design for my T- shirt by creating a mood board and mind mapping

I will create the design I have planned using photoshop

I will spend more time working on my ideas. Making adjustments or designing new ideas.

Schedule

Audience

The audience I think I will attract are young people, ranging from teens to people in their twenties. I also think my T-shirts will mainly attract men. The types of people who will be interested in buying my T-shirts are going to be people interested in experimental music, psychedelic pop, electronic and hip hop.

Peer Evaluation

What are the strengths of the final image?• The font used is interesting & links to the image• The simplistic design is effective as it allows the

writing & the image to stand out.

What could be developed if the image was repeated? • The final image isn’t really a graphic. This could be developed into a rotoscoped image (although it does look good the way it is

Page 31: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

Peer Evaluation

What are the strengths of the final image?I like how the image looks real with the use of

effects on the darkened areas I like how the image is 3D What could be developed if the image was

repeated? The edges are a bit sharp and ridged could

make them smoother

Does your final product reflect your original intentions?

For my first design, my original plan reflects my finished product a lot. I used the image that I planned to use, with the pattern I intended to use too. The only thing I changed was the writing. In my original plan I didn’t have any writing, but I added writing for my actual piece.

Finished Product

Plan

For my second and third designs I didn’t create an initial plan. I came up with the ideas after creating my first design. I did do another rough plan for a different design, however after creating it I decided I didn’t like the idea and abandoned it to create something else.

Page 34: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

Is your product suitable for your audience?

Yes I think it is. The audience that my product is aimed for is young men or teenagers. This is because I think that they are the ones more likely to listen to the sort of music that I have based my design on. I also think the colours from the pattern on this design are quite young colours, as they are black and gold. Gold is sometimes associated with gangsters, or rappers and it tends to be younger generations and men who are in gangs, and who are into hip-hop or rap music.

It was similar for my second design. My design is aimed at people who are into Panda Bear’s music. Panda Bear do not necessarily have a predominantly male or female fan base. Skateboards are typically quite masculine, though have been increasing in popularity amounts women recently. The design was appropriate as the music is intended to be good for skateboarding, so people who like skateboarding may also like Panda Bears music.

Page 35: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

The audience for my third design would be younger people, ages 18+. They wouldn’t specifically be male or female. They would have an interest in experimental music. My design was inspired by Avey Tare (David Portner), who came from Animal Collective. He creates experimental music. I think younger people would be interested in this as experimental music is quite a new concept and Avey Tare was created quite recently. The actual design itself links in well to the genre also as it is quite surreal and quirky, as are most of Avey Tares tunes, so this too makes the design more suitable for the audience.

Page 36: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used?

On my first design I like the way the pattern looks over the top of the mask. To achieve this I created a clipping mask on the pattern so it fitted over the mask perfectly. I also like the look of the lowered opacity on the pattern so the natural dark and light parts of the mask show through a bit to give it a bit more shape rather than a block colour. Lowering the opacity also made the colours less vibrant, which I think looks a lot nicer. I wish I’d have used more rotoscoping on this picture so it was more my work, rather just me arranging someone else’s work.

I didn’t use that many techniques on my second design, but I did use the clipping mask tool again, which I think looks really good as it means you can fill in an image with any pattern or other image you like. To cut out the wheels on the skateboard I had to use the polygonal lasso tool.On this design I feel like I could have used more techniques to create a much more intricate design, that would be more of my own work, such as rotoscoping.

Page 37: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

On my third design I altered the original colour of the alligator head to make it the same black and white as the persons body. I liked this because it made the image look more realistic. Although the black and whites didn’t come out completely identical, I think it still looks close and very good. I also lowered the opacity of the skull head to make the colours seem duller, which I think looks nice and ties in more with the black and white. I liked my use of layering as it make it look as if the alligator/ human was actually sat in front of the painting. On each individual image I used to create this design I had to use the polygonal lasso tool to cut out the sections I wanted.Again though I probably aught to have used more rotoscoping to make it more my own work, though due to the amount of editing I did to each image to achieve the right colours I think that could have been enough.

Page 38: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks?

I like the colours I have used on my final product for my first design. The album artwork I chose to use for my design looks perfect the way I used it as it is a simple pattern. I think the writing fits into the image as it curves around the mask and the font is nice. I also like the simplicity of my final image. One thing I didn’t like was that I noticed after I uploaded it to Redbubble, thatthe image was slightly stretched. I also noticed that some of the edges were quite sharpe, so I should have spent some time looking more closely at my design to avoid these issues.

I like the simplicity also on my second design. The fact it is quite a small simple design means that perhaps it will go with more T-shirt colours. By using the clipping mask on my design it has made it look like the album artwork is on the bottom of the skateboard. Although I do like the simplicity of the design I perhaps could have added more detail without over crowding it. I could have spent some more time on the work rotoscoping the design on the bottom of the skateboard, in order to make the work more my own rather than just a collection of someone elses work.

Page 39: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

On my third design I really like the selection of images I used to create this weird kind of collage. The colour selection on this image is also really nice and the colours tie in well together. I spent a lot of time trying to get the colours of the alligator head and the persons hands to match in order to make the two images look like one. I like that the alligators head looks realistic on top of the persons body, making it look very surreal. It was quite a risk creating such a busy design when previously I had only done simple designs, however I think it was worth taking the risk as all of the images I included fit well together. One thing I don’t like is that the gold frame cuts off at the edge. A lot of the skull in the background on the image is covered up by the alligator head so it is quite difficult to make out what it is.

Page 40: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

Why did you include the content you used?

The mask is meant to represent MF DOOM, a rapper who conceals his identity by wearing a metal mask. The pattern over it represents Clams Casino, as the patternI used is his album artwork. And the writing that says “Bookfiend” is the song that MF DOOM and Clams Casino did together.

In my second design I used the image of the skateboard to represent how Panda Bears music is meant to be good for skateboarding to, but also how the members all skateboard. Also the image I used for the deck is the album cover of their album Person Pitch.

I used the alligator head on my third design as that is Avey Tares symbol for his music. The persons body I used in my design was David Portners body, who is Avey Tare. I think the particular image I used for the body was also from one of Avey Tares album covers. I used the skull as means of some controversy. Avey Tares actual symbol is an alligator skull, so I used the live alligator head on the persons body to show them as the spectator, and the human skull to represent the Avey Tare symbol.

Page 41: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

What style have you employed in your products?

The main effect I used on my products was using the clipping mask to place imagesinside another image, this seems to be the style I have employed. I took inspirationfor my first design from album artworks from the artists mostly. For my third image I create a sort of collage where I took bits from different photos, cut them out with the polygonal lasso tool, and stuck them together to create the image I wanted. I had to play with the effects available on photoshop in order to get my alligator head to match the colour of the persons skin on their hands.

Page 42: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning

The strengths were that I had a clear idea in my head of what I was going to do before hand. Though my weakness was that I didn’t record my ideas down sufficiently. The images I had recorded down that I was going to use didn’t show clearly what I was planning to do, nor did I take down written notes about it.Also I didn’t even do a plan for my second and third plan so I really did have to do it off the top of my head.

Page 43: Digital Graphics pro forma (with improvements)

Analyse each of your final print products commenting on the strengths, weaknesses and aspects you would

do differently if you were to repeat the project

Image is slightly stretched.

Good shading to give it the design shape, by lowering opacity.

Edges are quite sharp. I should have slightly rounded them off.

Writing is curved around so it fits in with the image.

Didn’t cover the wheels of the skateboard with the image on the deck so it is clear to see it actually is a skateboard.

The image inside the skateboard makes it look like that is the design on the bottom of the deck.

The colours from the image on the deck fits in quite well with the colours on the wheels.

I wish I’d have rotoscoped the image on the deck.

I should have placed the alligator head more carefully on the body so it looked more like it was attatched

I also should have made the black and whites for the body and the head more similar.

I wish you could see the eyes on the skull so its clearer what it is.

I like the combination of images I used to create this design

The black and white image with the gold frame works well together.

Font is also interesting.

The colours fit well together and relate to the theme.

Managed to cut the image of the skateboard so it actually looked broken.

Peer Feedback

My peer review on my first design suggested that my font was interesting, that the simplicity was effective and that it looked 3D and realistic. It also suggested that I should have rotoscoped it, and also that the edges were too sharp.

I agree that the image looked 3D and quite realistic. I also agreed with the comments about the font, as I though the font was interesting too. She made comments about the simplicity of my design, which I also thought was effective. I also agree with both of the criticisms too, that the edges are too sharp and that I probably should have rotoscoped it.
